  1. @Dazzer01 There are a couple of people working with VR for SL. There are two problems. Performance is a big problem. The other is the user interface.

Try and imagine how we would handle all the control panels in VR...

I did get my Gear VR working with a modified version of FS in SL and Sansar.

The VR phase has sort of died out. Most of us would love to be in the immersive 3D experience. But, headsets are uncomfortable. I thing FAR too uncomfortable for recreational use.

LMAO, it's the Bom Fanatic version with no alpha cuts, the one that helped KILL her brand dead.

And still trying to coin it like a bandit, 2600 for a body nobody makes clothing for any more.

    Hard PASS.

That is a bit unfair, but only a bit.

The Redux (aka BOM) versions of the Slink body are the most efficient bodies going. Low in scripts and polys.

Are people still making clothes for Slink bodies? A few are. But no doubt the number is shrinking. However, there are still many designers still selling thier existing Slink versions.

While I have moved to LaraX I still wear my Slink stuff 80+% of the time.

  3. Entering anything in search is NOT a risk. Search queries are sent as text to the server running a search app. I suspect the viewer limits the length of a request just as browsers do. The search apps are designed to handle the max length and limit the apps input length. So the search ALONE is not risky.

However, what it finds and returns in the results may be dangerous to click on.

The text is unclear as to what one is supposed to do with the 'key'. Presumably, the idea is to put the 'key' in the Monkey Wonder sploder. THAT... is risky. We have no way to know how the sploder is scripted or what the 'key' may trigger when entered.

These are things to stay away from. But they are not to be feared. If you really, really, really want to check it out, use an Alt that has no payment info or L$ balance.

Yeah, a even a decent 4G is better than satellite. I don't live in the mountains - I only visit. My neighbour up there has satellite, and it can actually be used for Netflix. SL? Maybe just to log on and have some IMs. If I need to to connected to the web for some reason I need to find me some 4G.

Netflix and SL have different requirements. Netflix uses a buffered stream. If you have a slow or high packet loss connection Netflix increases the buffer size. This gives it time to reload dropped packets and stay ahead of the play-head.

SL is interactive. It cannot anticipate what you will do next. So latency is a BIG problem. While we can cache things we can't buffer because SL has to wait on your typing and mouse inputs.

Thanks for the info, Nalates! When you say 'folder size is sort of restricted by computer and connection speed,' why is that? Do you mean that only approximately 5,000 items will show in a folder at a time?  If there are more than 5K items in a folder, what happens to the rest of them? I do understand how to make folders/subfolders, and do use them.

The problem is a timing issue. The process that loads the inventory list will time out if a folder takes too long to download. If it does time out, the assumption is the connection is inadequate and the connection aborts. It is then a matter of calling support to get inventory rearranged. Meaning they divide folders with ~5k+ items into smaller groupings.

I say sort of restricted because it isn't the Lab limiting us but physics. Also, the number varies based on your computer and connection speed.

When you get logged in all your inventory will be there.

  6. AN alternative connection is to look at Starlink, Elon's networking system. (PC Mag review) This is not cheap. US$600 for the basic equipment (dish) and something like $120/month for service.

    Speed... mixed.

    04KOe4NsW4gsrlC0XpnUNwO-13.webp.db31736e7aee13654abd236c276a0719.webp

Average ping/latency for the reviewer was 40ms... which is similar to my fiber connection.

I would be asking around or looking for houses with a Starlink receiver and finding out how Starlink is working for them. I would also contact the SL support people and ask if they have any information about users coming on via Starlink.

While $600 is a good sized investment Starlink offers a 30 day trial, money back deal. Plus I found Starlink 'dishes on eBay for $200 and up.

This may be a viable possibility for you.

  7. Satellite connections are horrible for gaming. Until you can change the speed of light, there isn't much to be done.

An alternative is to consider using your cell phone as an access point. Whether it is better depends on the phone service you have. 5G would likely be usable.

  8. Translation:

Hello! I spent years and years away from SL, but now I really miss it and want to go back. Please can someone tell me the computer is ok to login? Ashley, I only have my cell phone. I need to buy it, but I need to buy one that works in SL. Thanks in advance for the information!

    Answer:
I am a confused. You should probably expand on your question.

There is a page about the minimum computer for running SL. See System Requirements.

To run SL you download the "Viewer" and run the viewer to log into the virtual world.

They are building a phone app. It isn't really ready for use.

Responder: Estou confuso. Você provavelmente deveria expandir sua pergunta.

Há uma página sobre o computador mínimo para rodar o SL. Consulte Requisitos do sistema.

Para executar o SL você baixa o “Viewer” e executa o visualizador para entrar no mundo virtual.

Eles estão construindo um aplicativo de telefone. Não está realmente pronto para uso.

Do I really need  to get a mesh head?

I've been living with this "system" head since a German guy (long since gone from SL) helped me design it. It's me.
Tried many heads, but they all look weird to me. Comfy in my self with my HG body. Don't really wanna change :I

System heads work just fine. You have a pretty face.

I used a system head for a L O N G  time. Only when I decided I wanted to use the makeup features of a mesh head did I change.

I am shocked by the number of answer. Thank you so much. I need time now to read all that

I give you a mistake or fail that affect my mood. I tried to play voodoo.  It was not easy at the begining. Then sudenly I got a message desactivated. After a while I realised that I was banned. The moderator said that a owner ban me. I didn't know the reason. He gave me a long list of rules.

In secondlife you don't have a second chance. When you are banned the only solution is change your IP address and create a new avatar. Maybe they will deteted in a cookie somewhere that I did a mistake and they will ban me again.

All that is game destructif for our mood and our selfesteem. You start to learn a new thing then you get banned. The owner never realised how hard it is to be banned. He feel power but it is like killing someone. that game is really hard and violent in that sens. No second chance.

If you get banned, just wait. There is a limit to how many people can be banned from a region. Depending on the traffic into a region and tendency of guests to violate the rules it can take weeks to months for the ban list to fill up. They are first in first out. So eventually you will likely get back in. Then pay attention to the rules.

Also by the time you scroll out of ban... whoever banned you will have forgotten you. Unless, of course, you did something really epic.

I have found most games in SL are simple enough. Most explain what they expect and what is required. The game moderators may be good or bad. They often get jaded and tend to react poorly. Also most in-world games involve RP. RP'ers tend to be into drama. Game moderators are generally advanced RP players. Meaning they are seriously into drama. But when they switch to OOC for moderation then it is all their way. Whatever you say just doesn't matter that much. You cannot argue with them. Doing so is pretty much an automatic ban.

Playing in games with in SL is not playing SL...

  11. @Feuerblau There are varied reasons for freezes. Since you have ample RAM and have tested it, that eliminates several. But this type of issue is almost always a Windows issue.

Next I would check the Windows install using SFC /scannow

SFC=System FIle Check - a tool built into Windows. Run in a Command window (cmd) as an admin. The result is no problem found, fixed problems, or could not fix.

Once the SFC finishes successfully run a disk check: chkdsk (letter C and a colon here - no parentheses) /r  this is Windows built-in tool for testing your hard drive. The /r option looks for weak sectors on the drive and repairs them. Windows will go into a retry cycle that can appear to freeze the running app when it tries to read a bad/weak sector.

Also make sure you run Windows Update.

The Windows Task Manager will show you what is going on in your computer. Run the manager using the performance tab. Hopefully, you'll be able to see what is happening when you get a freeze. At the bottom of the Performance tab is a link to open the Resource Monitor. The resource monitor will give you more detail as to which processes are likely causing the freezes.

You can use specific tools to get an idea of what the problem may be. HWMonitor will report temperatures inside the computer. If the CPU is over heating its protective features will slow or shut down your computer. MemHistory will report what is using system memory and graph the use. Both are free.

Again. Freezes are almost always a Windows problem. Replacing (re-installing) Windows is a LAST resort. Do the easy stuff first.

Ok, thanks!  I will follow your recommendations and use one of the low lag regions you mentioned, to log in.  Thanks for the clarification on relog.  No, not doing fine with the SL official viewer- constant crashing/ screen freezing.  I actually prefer FS- I used it for about 11 years with not many problems at all. Question- how big is too big on your Inventory?  I recall someone telling me a while ago that too many items in Inventory can cause lag problems.  I have been diligently working on clearing out and lowering Inventory items to get back to a manageable amount.

Inventory size is unlimited. Folder size is sort of restricted by computer and connection speed to about 5,000 items. But you can have as many folders and sub-folders as you want to keep a folder's item count below 5k.

Lag is not caused by inventory size. A really large inventory, like 100K+ items, may cause an almost noticeable delay at login. And large inventory does use a bit more memory. But it is NOT a significant factor in running a viewer. Loading a single texture can use more memory than your inventory.

  13. A good therapist counsels in person. They are watching body language, facial expressions, and listening to verbal clues. Some believe there is a psychic connection in person-to-person conversations which is important in the counseling process. 🤔

No one I have ever heard of counsels by postal mail or email. None of the alternate important communications channels are available via email or in SL... even SL voice chat is limited in what it can convey.

Counseling in SL is severely handicapped. A person that offers more than surface level counseling in SL is not likely a professional nor well trained.

If you want to know a person's level of training, ask them for advice. If they give it, I would doubt they are a professional.

Lucy at 5¢ (~L$12) a session is a real deal.

My advice would be to join active groups in Second Life that have a common interest. They are usually a good source for help and a great way to meet people. There are active avatar help groups and also groups that share info on activities.

As an example i can use myself. My interest is vehicles and travel in SL. I make vehicles and i enjoy driving and flying in Second Life. So i joined the Drivers of SL group. They help each other, have a lot of social banter and events.

You can see if there is an active group for a subject that has your interest.

    No, it really isn't.

    No.

@Gabriel Isodo Groups are an excellent way to meet like minded people.

Is Second Life a game? The answers are highly debatable. It is like arguing if RL is a game or not. You can approach both as a game or something more. I think both can be treated as a game but both have the possibility of being something more. It is up to you to decide whether to pursue the something more.

I think of SL as the something more than a game. Games have specific rules and goals, which determine a winner. There is no way to WIN Second Life. It is there to enjoy... or not. I consider SL as a toy. Something to be played with. Some what like a yo-yo or model airplane.

No second chance... that idea is WAY far from reality. RL has serious limitations. There are very real and uncomfortable consequences for a person's actions. But in SL one can completely start over with a new account. One can also retain their account and simply decide to be someone and do something different.

Depending on where you live the freedom SL offers is or is not apparent. How you see freedom is a matter of how you have been conditioned and trained. And it is a matter of how well read you are. Which is a way of saying you either live RL in a propaganda bubble or you have broken out. SL is a free market system where you can do just about anything you want. Some people play like they are millionaires and others build businesses in SL make RL six and seven figure incomes... just about anything a person wants.

The idea that you are doing something wrong seems odd to me. I suspect you have some ideas about SL that you are imposing on what is supposed to happen. My belief is doing SL wrong means your viewer/computer crashes. Your 'wrong' is not that. So, to get the help you want/need you'll have to be more specific as to what you are doing wrong and in what scenario you see your mistakes happening.

Hi Resi- not clear on this. My laptop has Windows 11 (for Home.) I put an SL or FS icon on my start screen and log in that way.  Isn't opening a viewer going through the Microsoft Edge browser (or Safari if I choose that)?

No. The Internet browser and SL viewer are separate, independent apps.

You can click a link in a browser and it will open a viewer and cause it to transfer you to the link's target location. But login is handled by the viewer.

If you are in the SL virtual world, not the websites, then you have logged in via a viewer. There is no other way. You have to run the viewer app to see the virtual world.

Inside the viewer you can use the built-in Internet browser or set the viewer to use your Windows' default Internet browser to open web pages from inside the viewer.
