  1. If I click on menu "Help, About Second Life", I get this. Is my Second Life viewer up to date? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Second Life 3.7.7 (289461) Apr 22 2014 13:01:33 (Second Life Release) Release Notes You are at 74.8, 149.1, 74.5 in Spangle located at sim10477.agni.lindenlab.com (216.82.51.183:13019) SLURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Spangle/75/149/75 (global coordinates 258,379.0, 264,085.0, 74.5) Second Life Server 14.04.16.289178 Retrieving... 2. Re my previous message about sky junk and skyboxes as a hazard when flying :: someone said that SL is unlike RL (= real life) because in RL there are no skyboxes. But in RL there are very tall radio and television masts and suchlike :: I was born in Rugby in Warwickshire in England in 1942, and from my front upstairs windows when I was a boy I could see an area of very tall international communication radio masts behind Lower Hillmorton :: and they had warning lights on top to avoid aircraft flying into them. And the Winter Hill television transmitter mast near Chorley in Lancashire is in the same category.
  3. It would be useful for Linden to write a "garbage collecter" that finds all objects left by users who have not been on Secomd Life for (say) a year, and suchlike, and archive them somewhere, or put each such item in its owner's or creater's personal archive; if the user returns, he would be able to restore them to their places. Please, how can I vary my draw distance?
  4. I see no point in making it invisible. If something is in the sky, I want to be able to see it, so that I don't blunder into it when I am flying about. There surely must be some sort of system for clearing up junk left by users who have stopped bothering with Second Life and have not logged in for a while. At Abbots Airport users can buy jet fighters etc; but where to fly them safely, if the sky is full of old floating junk?
  5. If 2 new regions need to be defined, it would be useful to define them at (1021,1007) and (1020,1007) to make a sim-bridge between Help Island Public2 and Furu, to help members to travel around that area without having to teleport.
  6. Is it known what is the highest that any skybox or other off-the-ground structure is above the ground? The biggest skybox that I have found was a public-access Star-Trek-themed garment and gun etc shop.
  7. The shape of the SL land surface is likely made by spline-type curve-fitting to a pattern of fixed points. If one point is moved, the curve between nearby points then whips around. I have been fitting curves to experimental data for people for a long time at work.
  8. It would be useful if the Second Life viewer could display the user's avatar's coordinates, i.e.:- x and y coordinates of the current sim in the grid x and y coordinates of his avatar in the current sim. His altitude. His current direction. Old versions of the Second Life viewer displayed some of that, but not the current version, as far as I can see. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How can I change the screen's field or direction of view without moving my avatar?
  9. The various times that I have come across roads and railways, I don't remember ever seeing vehicles on them, or only rarely.
  10. Way back long ago in prehistoric times before the internet started, I had this problem at work in a university when fitting a smooth curve to data points. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curve_fitting What seems to be needed is ability to "break the spline" at the property boundary. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spline_%28mathematics%29
  11. Just an idea for someone who wants to start a project spread over several adjacent sims :: try making a copy of the former country village of Heathrow west of London that until 1944 was where the (real world) airport is now? For more information see this link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heathrow_%28hamlet%29 If it was set up as the real place was after 1930, it would include the Great West Aerodrome, which was about half a mile each way and all grass with one big hangar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_West_Aerodrome
  12. With railways, how realistic must they be? In SL, if someone crossed a sea strait by laying the track on the seabed, going underwater in SL is not subject to the hazards of real-world water (drowning, floating away, wave action, motors getting flooded).
  13. (1) What are these images called? In most forums they are called "avatars", but in Second Life the word "avatar" has another meaning. (2) This image :: how can I load one for my username directly from my computer, as I can do for most forums?
  14. It would be useful if there was a limit to how high such an area's exclusion zone extends, and/or a lower limit to how long before an intruder is ejected. Once I was on a fast high-altitude overflight to get between places, and during this I hit a restricted access area with zero time tolerance, and I was summarily ejected far from my route to a place called Mauve. I do not see how I can infringe or annoy anyone's privacy by quickly overflying several hundred meters overhead :: in the real world I must tolerate airliners flying over my house and garden.
  15. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/West_Atoll_Railroad Why did the WARR railway shut down? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Is it possible for a railway line or a motor road to jump between remote places by a teleport link? (In SL I once found a Stargate; it jumped to a remote place in SL.)
  16. I use BTInternet. It runs over my telephone line but is stated to be a fast link. It can run when someone is telephoning. It is not a dialup line. It seems to be DSL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL .
  17. In the real world, the HS2 planned route goes under the bottom of my garden :: luckily 100 feet underground.
  18. When I start Second Life, after one or a few minutes the image goes grey-shades with a message-box asking me whether I want to view IM and Chat or to quit, and I cannot move my avatar about again, until I quit and re-login. My current link to the internet is over my telephone line, and is adequate to me for most purposes; I do not play over-the-internet videogames. Am I right in thinking that accessing Second Life properly nowadays needs a modern fiber-optic or similar internet link?
  19. In my explorations of the Second Life world, I sometimes come across railways. In "SLRR, Plusia" I found a large railway station. On a wall by the track in the station is a big map of a railway system on one of the main SL continents. That railway system goes across many sims owned or rented by many people. When a long railway is set up, how does the railway maker get power to lay track across many people's sims on the way? Compare the enabling Acts of Parliament that railway builders needed in Britain in the real world: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Railway_Acts . Similarly with long motor-vehicle roads?
  20. My PC (now has Windows 8.1) recently was reformatted & re-installed. Please how can I reinstall Second Life so I can get back to my old username (CaptainJack Grauman), so I can get back to various Second Life objects which I own? I don't want to have to register again with a new username.
  21. Once I was on the runway level at Abbott , and, before the runway fully rezzed up, I saw below it a seaplane floating on the water below. How can I reach that seaplane when the airfield is fully rezzed up?
  22. At the airfield on Abbott, once in a while an airliner takes off and flies away, with a message that it is going to some place (in one case, the northern continent). Is it possible to get board those flights? (I have flown in airliners in the real world.)
  23. I just now tried setting my "timeout " to "never", and I am still getting dropped. Just now I was dropped while in the Abbott airfield; here is the image (trimmed).
  24. I have been in Second Life for a few years without trouble. But recently (under the old viewer and under the new viewer), after I have been in Second Life for a monute or two, the system drops me and alleges technicel difficululty: it offers to let me stay on IM or to exit compleltely. Do I need a faster modem? Or what?
