  1. For sale: Beautiful protected waterfront on the Jeogeot Gulf. Just a quick sail or flight to the picturesque Bellisseria continent. One quarter region (16384 m2), laid out in a T-shape. Asking L$85000, which works out to L$5.2/m2 http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Quigley/116/222/22

Unless reviews were mandatory, so that you'd know what the average person felt, all you know for sure is what one person who left that ONE review thought. Basing your own decision on one stranger's opinion ( it might even be the merchant's alt! ) is silly. And is just as silly to ignore the competing product just because nobody bothered to leave a comment. First, I'm not sure where you got the impression that the item only had one review. It had several. I agree that it's usually silly to base a decision on one or two reviews, unless they are very convincing. But one point I'm making is that the reason few people leave a review is that they are unable to, because they bought in-world. There is a good chance that both items I was considering would have had more reviews if that weren't the case. I would certainly like to write a review praising this item, but I can't. And yes, I do believe it's fair to use reviews in making my buying decision. When there isn't enough information in the item description to make an informed decision, and I can't try before I buy, the reviews definitely tip the balance.

I have been selling successfully in Marketplace (and its predecessors) and in world shops for six years and can count the number of reviews I have ever received on the fingers of two hands. I conclude that most people are pretty much like me when it comes to reviews. Another point that I think is relevant here is that when I bought this item, there were two items from different sellers that I was considering. The one I bought was the one that had stellar reviews, versus the one that didn't have any. I prefer to buy in-world whenever possible, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. But if you can't demo an item or see it in action, all you can judge it by is customer reviews.

If I find something interesting in-world, I will very often go to Marketplace to see the reviews. Then I'll usually go ahead and buy the item in-world, unless it's cheaper on the web. The fact that people who bought the item in-world can't leave a review really cuts down on the number of useful reviews that are written. It seems to me the obvious solution is to not require any proof that the item was bought before leaving a review. As long as a user is signed in, he or she can leave one review for an item. It works for Amazon. The reason I'm bumping this thread is I bought something in-world toay that I thought was really great, but of course I can't leave a review. Very frustrating.
