  1. There is some good information here... http://forums-archive.secondlife.com/327/70/215905/1.html Basically it comes down to aspect ratio, profile pics use a 4:3 aspect ratio and SecondLife will shrink down images that are too big for you. So I would just use any image with a 4:3 aspect ratio (640x480, 800x600, etc.) Hopefully that helps.
  2. I've always been a fan of Bogart's... http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Franks%20Place%203/217/127/22
  3. You actually do have a little control over this, when you visit a location in SecondLife all of the data your client needs to render it is downloaded into your local cache, you have the option to increase the amount of cache you want to allocate in your preferences. Increasing your cache should help improve performance when you are visiting places you have been to recently. The other posters are completely correct in pointing that SecondLife is very different from other games that are mostly played in a fixed environment, it definitely can take patience sometimes. If you have not done so already you might also want to try pushing your Maximum Bandwidth setting up to 1200 or so as well.
  4. Unless there is some exploit I am unaware of I think it is very unlikely a griefer was able to take your items. More likely it was returned for some unknown reason, if so it may be part of a coallesed object so it may not be named what you expect. It is also possible that perhaps someone that has permission to edit your objects took it or if it happened to have been shared with a group, then any group member may have taken it.

No. The viewer doesn't matter here, the group info box is the same in every viewer. If possible at all you'll find even more info in FS than in official viewer. I found all those info boxes to be exactly the same in LL, Phoenix, FS and Singularity. I must be missing somthing because I just launched Firestorm again and the group profile definitely looks differnt than the one in the LL viewer I used. I still can not find this information anywhere in the Firestorm Group Profile. It really doesn't matter though, I have what I need now.
  6. Thank you. I should have thought about logging in with the official viewer rather than Firestorm. I found what I was looking for exactly as you described using the LInden Labs viewer.
  7. It seems like this should be easy but I am stuck on something. I am the owner of a group that owns land, I donate part of the tier needed for the land and other group members have donated the rest. I would like to see exactly who has donated tier and how much to my group. I thought I could see that by bringing up the group profile and clicking on the land tab, but I just can not find the information I am looking for. Does anyone know where I can find who has donated tier to my group and how much? Thanks!
  8. Here is an article on the subject that helped me. http://www.pennycow.blogspot.com/2012/01/improving-sl-camera-short-version.html
  9. It's great that you got it fixed. It might be a good idea to post back with what you did to fix it, someone with the same problem may find this thread in the future and your solution may just help them out.
  10. I would really recommend buying your Lindens directly from Linden Labs, they do take Mastercard. I have never spent anything but US currency there but my suspicion is your credit card provider will be the one converting your currency to US Dollars so I would check with them to find the current exchange rate. One caveat is I've read people have problems with Visa or Mastercard gift cards, they may not work. Good luck.
  11. you can delete them but it will slow down SecondLIfe the next time you log in beause all of the cached assets will have to be redownloaded from the servers. If you do decide you want to remove your cache files the easiest way is to use "Clear Cache" in your preferences, it will delete the files the next time you start the program. You might want to see if your anti virus program would allow you to exclude just that directory from scanning, it is pretty unlikely that Linden Labs is going to install a virus into that directory. Though I guess anything is possible. Typically the only time you want to delete cache files is when you are having problems with sl, sometimes corrupted cache files can cause problems.
  12. Yes, multiple accounts are allowed, usually we refer to them as "alts".
  13. Issues like these can also be caused by networking issues, you may want to try powering your router off and back on to see if that helps as well as trying the other good recommendations in this thread.
  14. Whenever I test a new viewer like this I always rename my .secondlife folder to .secondlife.bak and then run the new client which creates a brand new empty .secondlife folder for itself, so that is definitely not the problem. It was a good idea though. Thanks for posting it.
  15. Well, Portage did not have 260.99 in it but it did have 260.19.44 and I downgraded to that (this on my Linux machine, have not messed with my Windows box yet). Unfortunately both Second Life 3.0 and 3.03 are still exhibiting exactly the same thing. None of the adjacent regions to the mainland region my home is in are visible and the friend's list does not load. Thanks for the idea though.
  16. Thanks, I may try that in this machine too, it seems strange though as the drivers I am using on this machine worked with viewer 2, it is hard to imagine that viewer 3 requires an older version of the drivers than viewer 2 did.
  17. Hi Baloo, Thank you so much for your willingness to look at this, here is the information you asked for... About phoenix viewer: http://pastebin.com/FjnukXWv glxinfo results: http://pastebin.com/cEH3nCJ6 lsmod results: http://pastebin.com/f7m9MEVb I do not have Imprudence installed but will do so and get back on that. I have installed the 64-bit version of Imprudence (1.3.2-Linux-x86_64). It is behaving strangely too, for instance, about 2 out of every 3 login attempts it gives me dns errors and fails to log in entirely, but I can do a nslookup on the address it is trying to connect to and that works fine. Plus Phoenix continues to work and if there were dns issues it certainly would not work either. When it does let me log in I had some of the same problems as viewer 3, especially in regards to neighboring regions. From my home I was able to see one of my next door regions but none of the others, when I tried fly into the neighboring region I could see I crashed. I was able to tp to another region I have some land in (Sabre) and made it there ok, but again, none of the neighboring regions were visible and I crashed when trying to tp home. Thanks again for your help!
  18. Tristizia, thank you for your recommendation, I have nothing to lose so will give it a try later today and report back. Thanks again!
  19. Thanks for replying, I was almost hoping you were running something older I could try. I wonder why it is giving some of us so much trouble? Oh well.
  20. Gaget, I'm curious, since you seem to not be having problems with Viewer 3.0 would you mind telling me which version of the nVidia driver you have installed? Is it 280.26 which seems to be the latest listed as stable or something older? Thanks!
  21. Just an update, I did not realize there was a 3.0.3 Beta version which I just downloaded and tried on Linux, using a fresh .secondlife folder. I am experiencing the same issues with my friends list not loading and only being able to see the mainland region I logged in to. I will test the new version on Windows too but that will have to be later. Oh also, apparently this viewer thinks my land is for sale! At least the "Buy this land" icon is dipslayed in the address bar of the viewer (clicking on it does bring up a box that says the land is not for sale at least.)
  22. Hi, I am desperately trying to get Viewer 3 to work on at least one of my machines but so far have been completely unable to. On my Windows machine I can perhaps run it for a minute or two sometimes but it always crashes with an OpenGL error, I have made sure everything is updated, I uninstalled and reinstalled my nVidia drivers (many times) but nothing I do seems to help. On my Linux machine I am able to log in and run the client but I can only seem to do anything on my mainland region where my home is, in fact, I can not even see any of the adjacent regions (just water) and I can not walk into them, also my friends list will not load (at least it hasn't after more than 45 minutes of standing at my home now) and I can not tp anywhere without crashing (well that is not entirely true, I can TP to places in the region I am already in but that does not do me much good.) Both machines have nVidia GTX460 video cards and both machines can run the Phoenix viewer with no problems, I have also had no problems running Viewer 2 versions in the past on either machine. The Windows machine runs Windows 7 64-bit with 6gb of memory and a Core2 Duo 3.0ghz processor, the Linux machine is also 64-bit with 32-bit compatibility libraries installed and has 4gb of memory and an AMD 2.8ghz triple core Phenom II processor. I know these are not the most up to date processors but they are well within the listed requirements for the client. Both machines are connected to a gigabit ethernet switch, I am not running wireless which I know can cause problems. Over the years I have had my fair share of issues with SecondLife but nothing as frustrating as this, especially running what is listed as the "Stable" version (I know, the Linux client is beta technically but the Windows version is listed as stable and it seems no where near it to me. Can anyone give me any guidance on what might need to happen to get 3.0 working? Thanks in advance.
  23. Ceera Murakami wrote: To have the ability to control use of Voice on rented land, choose to rent from a Private Island estate owner, instead of on the Mainland, and choose a landlord that will "sell" you the parcel, so you have parcel Owner rights. On a Private Island estate, the sim owner can sell you parcels, and can reclaim them if you fail to pay rent or if you break their covenant agreements. So they can give you far more rights to control your individual parcel. But on the Mainland, they can't do that. If they sell a Mainland to you, , or Deed it to your group, it's no longer theirs. You're paying the tier to Linden Lab then, and they have no control over it any more. At best, they may be able to 'set' (but not Deed) the land to a group that you own, provided they are also an officer in your land group, at least temporarily. A landlord can allow a renter to have control of parcel voice settings on mainland as well as private estates. As long as the land is owned by a group and the owner of the group sets the "Change music & media settings" option for the renter in the group settings it will work just fine (I just logged in with an alt and tested it on my parcel to make sure).

Who in the heck are you to make a judgement like that? It is up to Linden Research to decide what is appropriate and where, not you. Of course it has been made clear that child avatars are not allowed to participate in age play, this is certainly as it should be but beyond that why can't people just let others enjoy SecondLife the way they like? You have no right to impose your "so called morality" on anyone else, if you don't like what someone does (and it is not against TOS) then just remove yourself from the situation and find somewhere else to spend your time. i am Dogboat Taurog and i have as much right to state my opinion as you do. its my world also. child avatars, lolitas and japanese fan teens all have the same thing in common in SL and its creepy. You specifically said "you want to act like a child? do so in the appropriate setting." This is not an opinion, it is a directive, you are telling the poster how they should live their SecondLife. Perhaps you don't understand English enough to know the difference? If you believe the TOS should be changed that is something we can have an honest debate about (or you can bring it up with Linden Research), but telling people they must behave in a certain way goes beyond opinion and borders on harrassment in my opinion.
