  1. "I own 3 residential sims (that I use an alt to manage) and any device that intrudes on the privacy of our renters is banned, including redzone and others. Its hard to enforce without being there 24/7, but doing our best. So far, the residents have all been happy not to have to worry about it. What I have found is that I've lost renters since the whole debacle began - with the residents just vanishing from the grid entirely. My guess is they may have been alts that got outted and given up on, due to the timing. In fact, I'm starting to ponder what else to do with the land because of it. I wonder if other land owners have experienced this?" Yes, I am losing almost half my sim tier revenue over this whole debacle! The renter that is leaving is not a copybotter but an avid supporter of redzone for the protection of his merchandise. I do trust that he is not one to misuse a product as that but I simply cant have even the perception of invasion of privacy on my sim. Privacy is one thing I had promised my residents long ago. As well I dont want our market to be affected by all the controversy either.
  2. wow no , I had no clue I could do that duh. Given that option I too would say keep all your stuff on one account Thanks for the tip!!! that will save me tons of time lol
  3. I agree that any use of purchases/revenue for an item is unfair as you stated it creates a perpetual windfall for that item. Once it is on the top page it stays there because it is seen it will get more exposure and by nature more sales. that method practically cripples the exposure possiblities for newer items or smaller businesses. If I type in dining room table I dont think getting a list of everything from gor to pool tables in the search it returns is a good thing to type in dining room table and ONLY get a list of dining room table listings is what I would consider to be a relevant search unfortunately the way search works now I get room, rooms, table, dining, and even things that dont even have those as keywords in the results. From a shoppers perspective I have gotten better results if I type in the search word in quotes, but even that doesnt return with as much relevance as I would like. I have also found if you drill down in the categories on the left first before typing in the search word it helps but I am not really sure just how many others use these techniques when searching so that doesnt help much from a sellers point of view if your customers dont know that for instance using quotes yields better search results. In summary if I type in redwood dining room table then a listing that matches that search word exactly is most relevant with dining room tables that are not redwood listed after that, anything that is not actually a dining room table that is listed would be irrelevant imo lol. I dont see that the number of units sold or price of it has anything to do with relevance. If I want to search by price that is a different type of search imo There should be ways to search by criteria such as relevance (keywords) then second criteria like price While you can tweek around to get there it is not obvious in how to do so on the marketplace. .
  4. The freebie mentality is pervasive and growing every day. While I believe that some freebies are good for promotions I think the whole hunt, freebie, lucky chair, 60L bargains etc have gotten way over used as marketing tools. I personally wont go down that road myself. I will offer a preview sale to my loyal customers but will not have the pervasive sale everytime my revenue drops a bit . I feel to put an older item on sale after my loyal customers have paid full price for it is just a slap in their face so I dont do that. I get irritated when I pay full price for something only to see it on sale a few weeks later. When that happens I just dont buy full price from that merchant anymore. I just wait for it to go on sale. It is my opinion that when you offer discounts, sales etc too often the customer begins to expect it and will in fact just wait until the item they want is on sale or free which actually undermines the merchant in the long run. hunts have never really been any benefit to my sales. They mainly attract people who will rarely buy items. I have tracked all those that have gotten gifts I have given in hunts, or free items and less than .01% have ever bought anything. The only value I see in those is the potential that someone else might see them wearing it and ask where they got it, come to the shop and purchase something. That of course is impossible to track. lol Most customers have no clue as to the amount of work that goes into creating goods here and even some of those that do dont really care ......they just want it....for free or dirt cheap. That leaves a small portion that do actually understand and care. I have a hunch that most of those are either models who need top items or creators themselves. Between the copybotters and freeloaders my guess is that the actual full price paying consumer base is a relatively small percentage of the overall SL users.
  5. As a shopper, I hate going to a persons market place store and seeing hundreds of items not related to what I am searching for. If I search for prefab and get a hit on your items I will then want to look at all your prefab listings all together. If when I get there I see I have to wade thru tons of other stuff ....... I just leave and look elsewhere. Of course that is just me. Not sure what most others preferences are. LL either needs to create a way merchants can categorize within their market place stores. that way we could see your items listed by category. but since that is not the case I would recommend you create a separate market place store.
  6. yes it is hard to pick just one....... I love great builds so many come to mind: Avilion Blossom Jaded Wings Verdigris to name a few
  7. I have to say I havent been to many adult sims, but upon searching for places to take nice pics, I found Elven Forest. It is a lovely elven forest setting on the sim of Blossom that was created by Voy Sands. While it does have "adult" content and items in hidden places it is very tastefully done. I fell in love with it and when I heard Voy was going to have to give it up, a group of us pitched in to save it. The four new owners pay the tiers with the help of donations from the group members and visitors. What I love about it is that it is such an artistically created build (by Voy Sands) with a nice community and few rules. If you get a chance, take a look and explore!!
  8. I think you missed my point. I am saying that I dont want just ONE role. I want the freedom to have as many roles as I like. I build, I design clothing, I write scripts, run a business and much more. I dont want to be pigeon holed or constrained to just ONE role. I have taught myself all of these skills (except the scripting which I had a very skilled scripter teach me) and like having the freedom to do so. what you are suggesting would be analogous to putting someone in a sandbox in RL or giving them an erector set and telling them they first have to decide what ROLE they want ie pilot and then have to be trained how to make an airplane. They cant make a bus because they are not a certified bus driver.I think if you did that a person playing would say "what? you mean I have to work a job to be able to create/play/entertain myself?" That is just too limiting and strangles creativity. As a child I wasnt forced to color in a coloring book and stay withing the lines. I was handed a blank piece of paper and told to create a picture or design of any kind. SL is different things to different people. To me it is entertainment/hobby/business/social network. I use it as a blank canvas to express my creativity. Even in RL people are not pigeon holed into just one ROLE, you have mothers who are executives who also may teach piano on the side. So I am still confused as to why you are so intent on this whole ROLE thing. That being said, I respect that you want to have ROLES and cerifications. Why dont you purchase a group of sims and create a nicely structured environment where all those who use your sims have to pick a role, join a guld, become apprentices and get certified for their roles.etc. SL can be that for you, I just dont want to have it be that for me. As I said SL is not RL, and some just dont want it to be an exact mirror of RL As far as quality *shrugs threa are varying levels of quality in both SL and RL . The market will usually eventually weed out the inferior products as those will be purchases less and probably go out of business anyway. Any uneducated person can start a business n RL (trained or not) and they may be inherently gifted at that business and do well or they may be inept then the business will fail I may be wrong but it just sounds like you are confusing a job in RL or RL structured society with a pass time/game/entertainment etc.
  9. What differ a Sci-Fi game where I can build, craft, extend the world, interact with friends, and I dont need to be a medieval fantasy char, but anything I want, from SL ? Only one thing, you dont have people connected there who have no clue as what to do next like SL, because you have a ROLE to fullfil, just like you do in real life, which you dont have in SL. If people have no clue what to do next in SL it is because they havent taken the time to explore the possibilities, that or they totally lack imagination or curiosity. No SL doesnt require you have a ROLE to fulfill as in RL and I for one dont want it to. Why should we be constrained to one role? Now we can be and do whatever our imaginations can create. I dont want to have to earn points or complete tasks to become a certain role, that sounds like what the Sims was wasnt it ? Some people already have roles of sorts, there are designers, builders, educators, musicians, etc. but those people are not constrained to only that. They can have multiple roles. If builders had to be certified, scripters had to be certified, and like in real life, you had a ROLE in SL society you shall fill, SL wouldnt have so many wasted resources in unfinished SIMs, useless buildings, and so on and so forth. I dont want to have to be certified, who is going to determine what one needs to do to be certified ? I guess you are proposing a fee to do so or a set of hoops we have to jump through to do that ...pfft I have a job in RL and I dont really want to think I have to have one in SL if I dont want to. and I already completed my RL education so dont really want to go to school in SL either What does it matter that there are unfinished sims, if the owner of that sim doesnt want to finish it what would LL care, they get their monthly tiers whether it is finished or not. People dont have to go to those sims if they dont want to see that lol. What you many see as a useless building may be a project to an individual and something they dont necessarily regard as useless. What I was saying is that SL has too much potential, but none really 100% used, because you have the wrong freedoms and the wrong limitations, and that is because it is handled not like a IT system, but mostly like a utopic idealistic world like it was another reality. The wrong freedoms? The wrong limitations? excuse me but I like having the freedom to use SL as I like to create what I want when I want using as much or as little of the potential as I like. SL IS another reality .....it is a virtual reality and most dont want it to be an exact mirror of RL. We have RL for that lol When it start to have a real purpose, companies will come back, serious people will come back, stable investments will come back. If you think that it is huge that you make a couple thousands over a month or two, this is nothing compared to what it could be if handled right. Not sure how putting everyone in a ROLE with specific duties and certifications will bring businesses. Any business can setup a group of sims and do what they want. What real purpose do you want SL to have. As far as I can see the current purpose is to provide a service and tools to allow people to do what they want by creating their own experiences .....what is so wrong with that?
  10. The SL platform is not a game, however it does contain many games. Hats off to your marketing gal for making that distinction in the Sandbox newsletter. After looking at the past issues I am guessing you guys are using the strategy now of segmenting your marketing into the different areas such as gaming, fashion, creativity, social networking, etc. A good strategy in my opinion. Now mass market that to the various demographics and you might see an increase in revenue. There is something for everyone here and to let the public know that is the way to go. On a side note, someone really needs to monitor orientation island. I was there the other day to help. The language and subject matter in the voice chat and local chat is inappropriate for a general rated area. If I were a noob just arriving and heard all that I would be left with the impression that SL was just a trashy place to be. Those members can have those conversations on mature sims , not on a general sim where new members are arriving. You may be scaring off potential new members by having such on the orientation island.
  11. As far as how it benefits anyone.....that is a subjective answer. My conjecture is the following: Benefits LL - decreases resources and staff needed for upkeep of teen grid ( they used staff to verify each account. -- a time consuming effort. - Considerably lessens LL's liability - financially not feasible in general - if they move all the teens to MG they avoid complications , legal actions, refunds etc. to the teens for their lost inventory, lost sims etc. Benefits to teens - They get to keep their playground, inventory, etc. - They get to have access to "better" content ( as stated by Blaze the content made by the teens was not as high quality) -They get access to more entertainment, venues etc. -They can try to sell their creations ( per Blaze they couldnt sell them on teen grid because 90% of the content was copybotted and flooded any potential economy there) Benefits to current adults -- as far as I can see not many but apparently there are some parents who want to play with their kids on SL. and some people like Nany who hope their presence will eventually eliminate all adult content. I personally dont mind them being on the main grid as I dont own a general rated sim ( that is where all the liablility is -- again the general sim owners bear the brunt of liabilities as they will be the ones held liable for any conduct , content etc. on their sims) however, I dont believe their presence will help the ecomony nor do I think I will find any personal benefits. Unlesss there is some 16-17 year old genius out there, I am not convinced I need their ideas nor have I ever had a stimulating converstation with a teen that enlightened me any more than any conversation I have had with adults.
  12. if you would, tell us exactly how this is a necessary move for LL? In fact, I would settle for you answering how this benefits LL or the established, paying residents of the MG one bit. We've been trying to figure out why the heck LL would do something this boneheaded for months. If you know how this is "necessary" please enlighten us. Two reasons: 1. not financially feasible to maintain the teen grid 2. And this is probably the largest reason.......LIABILITY, LIABILITY, LIABILITY read the TOS and see how much they have stressed that they are only a service and that all conduct, activity and content is now the responsibility of the sim owners and users of SL. I imagine they didnt have as good an umbrella of protection from the liability on the teen grid as it was perceived that they "supposedly" had security checks and advertised it as a teen safe environment With them on the main grid they are not saying only teens are there , they are basically saying teens enter at your own risk and agree per TOS that you have a parent taking responsibility for you agreeing to the TOS. AGAIN.........IT IS ALL ABOUT PROTECTING LL's LEGAL LIABILITIES
  13. Another thing to think about...............Will the parents of those copybotting teens be laughing when they also are held liable for the actions of their teens. In the case of minors committing crimes the parents are often the ones sued......Please copy anything regarding the copybot issue and pass it along to your teen friends. Remember the ripped tunes, where the parents of the offenders were charged and fined huge amounts of money when the music industry clamped down on copyright violations. Believe me I personally know designers who will sue offenders. The teens AND parents in this case are at risk.
  14. suspect that this issue will cause the biggest rift between our respective cultures. I can't overstate how touchy an issue this is for a lot of folks. It really pisses people off. There are people who actually do walk around inspecting folks looking for this sort of thing from what I understand. Designers here take copybotting VERY seriously. Not only designers but there are also many self appointed copybot police roaming around. I personally bought an item thinking it was by a designer only to find out later it was copybotted when someone accused me. (I had not found the wonderful inspect feature, but I sure use it now) I immediately deleted the item, found out the original designer and purchased it from them. We all collected freebies, dollarbies when we arrived on the grid before we even knew about the copybotted issue. I have since gone through all my inventory and deleted all freebies that I was not sure about. So my recommendation is this.....if you have not received a freebie directly from a designer be VERY suspicious. It is easy to tell reputable designers. They have nice storefronts in nice mall areas and dont have tons of freebie boxes, business in a box etc. Many designers offer very high quality freebies at their shops as promotions and participate in freebie hunts. If I were coming from teen grid I would delete any item that was given to me, any freebie item, especially clothing as it is extremely rare that a clothing, hair or skin designer would give out full perm items. I imagine starting Jan you will see many of the copybot police checking out the general sims for illegal items. They will AR you , as was said if LL thinks you obtained it unknowingly they will just delete them from inventory, but if they suspect or know for sure you are the originator of the copybotted item you WILL be banned. The teens on the grid can laugh all they want when you mention the seriousness of this issue but it will be the copybot police laughing when these teen are banned or wiped of 90% of their inventory.
  15. Also, to all of you considering those "alternative" grids. Keep this in mind, that those low sim tiers are probably only introductory pricing and will also increase after the introductory/beta periods. So what I am saying is if you budget for those lower costs, you will again have to increase your budgets at the time those introductory/beta offers are discontinued.
  16. I would be willing to bet that LL makes a profit off of those "large land owners" even if they are paying discounted prices. From a purely business perspective a company would rather risk losing some non-profits, education sims of which they probably lose money on than risk losing a greater number of customers that have profit producing sims. Remember LL is a for profit business and they have to cover the increase in their business costs too. That being said I am not saying I dont understand the viewpoint of those here who oppose the increase but I am able to view this from both sides. I am curious though why 1) an educational institution as stated above that is implementing a tuition increase cannot sustain the effect of an increase to their sims as that would probably be less than .01 percent of the money from that increase. 2) I dont understand why in this economic climate, the employees, professors, etc. of that institution feel they are automatically due a raise every year. There are many employees of non educational companies that are just glad to keep their jobs at whatever their current salaries are. My guess also is that the "student fees as mentioned cover any increases in those activities. Put the shoe on the other foot, if LL didnt increase the tiers would it affect the LL employees from getting increases or would it help keep LL from having to lay off even more employees? Dont all of you bash me at once......as I said I am trying to look at this from both sides. I personally do have the ability to view positions from both sides even if I do disagree with the LL decision to increase the tiers for you all.
  17. Hi again Kim, I will be interested to see exactly what marketing slant will be used regarding the teens coming to what is widely known as an adult grid. I am concerned about two things that I am sure most parents would be as well. 1. What safeguards will be in place for the children to keep them from being exposed to "mature" and "adult" content. How would you be able to sell a parent on this? 2. What measures will be taken to ensure that PG sim owners are not liable for any nefarious activities towards or by children involving "adult" content. If any of the future plans of LL include trying to attract businesses or educational groups then that will be a major concern. This is not like RL where we have police keeping perverts off land that may have children on it. You definitely have your work cut out for your marketing efforts on these two points
