  1. Fizz, I told the steps you suggested before exporting, and I tried it both with and without the rig selected. Neither one worked: I got the same error. Any other ideas?
  2. I am having trouble exporting a rigged mesh from blender 2.49b. Does anyone have some time to help me? I am using the simplebot mesh. I parent the mesh to the armature, and press the "make real button". I have both the object and the rig selected when I export. I export the mesh in collada 1.4, and try to upload to SL. I can select the file for upload, but the preview window has nothing in it. When I push it, SL says that the file does not contain a mesh. I can upload non-rigged meshes fine. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I figure it must be something silly. I have in the past been able to upload rigged meshes, so I don't know what changed. Thanks for your help, Tyrian
  3. No I haven't used "make real". I'll give that a try.. tomorrow. It's too late tonight.
  4. Oh yes... I'm working in blender 2.49b
  5. I have not yet had success uploading a rigged mesh. Well, it rigs in the right place, but the joint offsets do not import. What special steps do I have to take for this to work right? Sorry for the vague description, but I really don't know where to start. I have been unable to find information on this problem. Thanks, Tyrian.
  6. Good morning, meshers! I've been playing around with mesh in blender, and if I make my models smooth (using subsurb), it takes well over half an hour to export my meshes. I'm modelling organics; full animal models. While my basic meshes are pretty low vert, once I smooth them enough that you can't see the polygons, I quickly get up to 50k vertices or more. Is there a way to make the models smooth without adding so many new vertices? Or is there a way to speed up blender's export? Thanks, Tyrian
  7. I tried that. :-( But it didn't work. I poured over some forums and realized that since I didn't use an install, windows didn't recognize blender as a program. I hd to install blender, then overwrite that file witht eh zip file. It's still a bit wonky, but I can open my blend files again. And now my problems exporting are solved! Thank all of your for your help. It was all very useful information.
  8. Okay! I downloaded the zip version of blender, and had a bit of fun figuring out that I also had to unzip the python folder into the same folder. However, I'm all set as far as that goes. Blender's running fine, recognizing python fine, and exporting collada files fine. However, I have one problem remaining: I can't get my old blender files to associate with the blender program. Windows insists on using windows media player to try to open them, even after I try to "open with-> blender". Does anyone know how I can fix that? I'm sure that if I putz around long enough, I can figure it out, but if someone has a quick solution, I'd greatly appreciate it.
  9. Thank you all of you for your thoughtful answers. I'll give them a try and report back. One thing I want to ask first though: does it matter if I install the 32 bit or 64 bit version on my 64 bit system?
  10. I'm trying to export a mesh in the collada file format, but having some trouble. I'm using blender 2.49 and I have both python 2.7 and 2.6.6 in my C drive. My computer is running Windows 7 64 bit. When trying to export the file, I get an error, "Exporting failed check console for info". When I click again, it gives me, "Error: Python script error, check console". I do not know how to check the console, or even what to look for in there. I am using a different computer than I was when I was using blender about a year before (I'm on a powerful desktop now instead of a middling laptop), so I tried the same thing on my lappie. I had no problems exporting. Thinking that this was a problem with the versions of blender and python I'd downloaded, I deleted blender and python from my desktop and copied the files from my lappie to my desktop. Blender on my desktop is giving me the same error. Upon further investigation, I tried other kinds of exporting on blender. They all fail. I tried downloading both normal and 64 bit versions of blender 2.49 and python 2.6.6, and I still get the same export failure message. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Tyrian
  11. That's right! I want an expert storyteller. I need someone who can write me an interactive story to take place on my sim. Said story must be complete with characters, dialogue, and a way for the visitor to be the hero. Ways for the visitor to be defeated are also welcome. I intend for this to be a "quest" of sorts. Scripting and building skills not strictly required, but useful. Please contact Tyrian Slade to discuss this in more detail, and feel free to visit Shiro Castle, my sim to get an idea of what I already have.
  12. Hello everyone! I'm looking for playable sims. By "playable" I mean ones that have a storyline you can walk through and follow to their conclusion, or where you can "play" something with a certain goal in mind. One example of playable sims I have found would be the Avalon sim quests, and another is the avaria crafting system (which no longer exists, sadly). I'm an adventure gamer at heart, and SL seems like it'd be a wonderful place to develop something like that, but I'm having a hard time finding it. Thank you for any help! Tyrian Slade
  13. ""Basic accounts created prior to June 6, 2006 receive a stipend of L$50 per week". If it's in the TOS or somewhere else official, it shouldn't matter if you downgrade later. you get that 50L/week regardless. If something goes weird, and you *stop* getting it, you should be able to file a ticket and get the stipend reinstated. I've never actually seen this, but this is my interpretation of the rules.
  14. I already have a tower, and I need(ed) a laptop for portability. However, I wanted one that could run SL from time to time. Anyways, I've gotten one. Not as advanced as I'd hoped I could find, but it seems to run SL fine on low graphics settings. I'll upgrade my tower for a better SL experience if I need to.
  15. Well, I think I have a solution: I'll get a laptop with an integrated graphics card for lugging around (and the chill pad. Thank you for that idea.), and I'll upgrade my desktop's graphics card for my main SL-playing. That I should be able to do within my price range, or within $50 of it. Thank you all for your help.
  16. Thanks. I have found a couple likely looking lappies on E-bay.
  17. Thank you. That will be some helpful information.
  18. Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I've learned a lot about how to judge a computer's systems. Whew! Now I just have to remember those resources for next time. >.< I no longer need help with this question. I've purchased a laptop: integrated graphics, but one of the better cards out there. It seems to run SL on lower graphics settings well, and without getting too hot. If I need more power, I'll just upgrade my tower and use that for most of my SL gaming.
  19. I'm looking for a new computer.  I need something I can lug from place to place, hence the laptop.  But I don't need it to be light, and I don't need good battery life.  However, I do want a computer that runs SL well, and can handle 3D modeling.  SL's the most graphics heavy thing I run.  I'd like a laptop with a dedicated graphics card if I can get it, but my budget is $500-$600 dollars.  Gaming laptops tend to run $1000 and up, so they're out.  I've tried looking for more mainline lappies with dedicated graphics, but I haven't had any luck.  Does anyone know of a site that could help?  Or even better, a laptop model that might fit my requirements? If I must go with integrated graphics, does anyone know of a graphics card that works well? Not sure if this is relevant info, but I'm posting it here anyways:  I currently run SL on an Acer Aspire desktop with an AMD Athelon 64 X2 processor, and NVIDIA GeForce 6100 nForce 405 graphics.  It performs poorly.  :-( Thanks for any help you can give.
