  1. I'd like to agree with you Storm, but while no-one is ACTUALLY kicked out, I do feel that the tone here is still harsh and dismissive. I saw one thread today where a regular poster, who gets much sympathy, gave a relatively new poster a roasting to their noob question...even closing their answer with </sarcasm>. No-one pulled them up on this because it's become so hardened that few people see it anymore. I hear a lot that this is forum life...well I disagree. It's internet, 4chan and Reddit life alright, but I am active in many forums and I find this one the hardest of all to feel comfortable in. I think Maryanne has a point. People stay quiet because if they don't, the same few people slap them down. I'm sorry, but that's the truth as I see and feel it. BTW...it doesn't help when those same few people are incredibly rude to forum members on a regular basis on widely known outside sites.....jus' sayin'
  2. No Orca they don't need your money, though not veryone is paying for their own computer, internetz and/or home (if that's what you'd call it in some cases), they WANT your money. It's entirely up to you whether you give them L. Tell them to go forth etc., set them aflame with the particle fire from hell, or just suck through your teeth a bit. Try not to forget though, that some of these new guys will have been told to beg for Lindens by older members who do this kinda stuff *for a laugh*. I give them the benefit of the doubt and question them. I've given L to some and told others to sling their greedy hooks. It's really hard to assign a *type* to anyone in SL. It's just too diverse.
  3. I strongly suspect that you strongly suspect correctly. I had one telling me that I wouldn't be able to log in because my payment details had changed. Funny, as I was inworld at the time and when I went all crashtastic, I got back in no problem. LL don't send these kind of emails. At all. If they want you to do something they cancel your account and THEN tell you what they want. ETA: You could always just type www.secondlife.com into your new tab and go from there. I almost guarantee you won't see the message.
  4. lol Charlotte. I found whirlpools, underwater monsters, weather patterns, a crashed plane and some really nice harbours today. I'm glad they gave me a boat.
  5. All the more reson to make sure you log out of any site where your security might be compromised, don't you think?
  6. Amarock go you! I won't take your gifts, though thank you for offering. I will raise a glass and toast your hard work though. Well done you!!
  7. Pamela Galli wrote: That's what I always think of (since I am a merchant) -- what about all the boat merchants who are selling something similar? Ouch. Oh come on Pamela. You know as well as I do that anyone charging for a boat as good as the Lindens are giving out is ripping us off. There are SO many better boats out there. Has your shop died because of freebies or Linden gifts? No, so I don't see your point. What I see is an easy introduction into sailing. Anyone who REALLY likes it will want a better boat. That person may have not ever even noticed his new hobby without that Linden freebie kickstart. The sky is NOT falling. It never has been and I've never seen LL do anything other than kickstart a stagnant economy.
  8. Well said Jenni. I'd never even visited the Blake Sea before I got my boat. I bought a hat, a blouse, a scarf and a parrot (all from other creators) and I went exploring and found a whole new area of SL. I read a quote once that said, "Those people who are bored are boring". I'm beginning to see where they came from.
  9. Storm Clarence wrote: What about all the Vampire wannabes they just recruited; it's pretty hard to sail at night. Isn't it? It's perfectly easy to sail at night Storm. I'm sure you know that. I have no idea why you're singling out vampires. I mean, Vikings can't sail it because it isn't a longboat, aliens from zooss can't because it doesn't havce a nitrogen hull, Goreans can't because it's not entirely made of slaves...I could go on. But hey, what's a no complaint op without complaints huh?
  10. Mine is an Animania one Pussycat. Alan, as he shall henceforth be known, is totally brilliant.
  11. Jenni Darkwatch wrote: Actually the creator shows as one of the moles... so... not much exposure for any creator. And personally I think it's how it should be. I agree Jenni. There would only be talk of favouritism. I'm having fun with mine. Even dressing up and taking the pic was fun. AND I got a new pet into the bargain. He's ace! See how this works? They give us something and those of us who embrace it give the economy a little boost while we play with it. Where's the harm in that? P.S. Great pics Ceka
  12. Here's me and Alan. We're lost in the fog on the Blake Sea. EEK!
  13. Actually Sharron I AM impressed. They didn't have to give me anything. Not a single iota, so as I said before, I'm not going to moan about it, I'm going to sail in it! Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum and all that. P.S. I bought a parrot
  14. Well seeing as I didn't sign up for freebies, or anything other than my own entertainment really, I'll take my boat and go shopping for a nifty sailor's outfit, then I'll talk like a pirate for a bit and maybe buy a parrot. Ahoy me hearties aaaargh!
  15. I've just had an email notification offering me a sailboat for being a premium member. I've always fancied a trip on the Blake Sea. Is it choppy out there? I like prezzies me. :)
  16. If I thought for one second that something I said in direct reply to someone else would be painful to them, I'd be mortified. You can either see this as me being weak, or as me being rounded. I know which of the two I prefer to be seen as. The only place I get mad is in these forums. Should I step away? Probably, but then, who is going to sit on the left shoulder giving advice and extolling the virtues of the inworld experience while the right shoulder is telling some poor new guy to GTFO for wearing the wrong dance HUD or something?

I think there are already enough narrowed-down posts in that vein and that Ms.Venus ain't all the shizzles (scuse me Venus), so why don't we stick to the wordplay that made this thread mildly epic (to at least one of us) in the first place. Perrie, that was completely epic, so the epicity has been restored. YAY!!
  18. Ah I see. Maybe we should invent a new way of distinguishing a series from a series of serieses. Perhaps like with metres, so you could have a nano-series, or a mega-series for instance. Not correct of course, but I like the way it sounds. /me dashes off to dial Rent-a-Woodchuck.

I didn't do any checking and I decided that "series" is also good as the plural. Isn't series plural to begin with? Surely you must have more than one of a thing to have a series of them. I could be wrong though. It's quite common for that to happen. You can have a series of numbers which could be considered a single set. So a series can be a singular thing made up of parts. Or you can have a series of series so a plurality of series. And how much wood can a wood chuck chuck? But that series of parts is made of more than one part, making it several things to make one series, right? Therefore it is plural, or collective, never singular as far as I can tell. I have a book about collective nouns, called "A Crash of Rhinoceros". Clowder of cats anyone? If a wood chuck could chuck wood then a wood chuck would chuck wood, but I dunno how much. How much you got?

  21. Damn it still doesn't show right, but it seems a bit odd.
  22. BTW, clicking on the link now does not get what I got in my notification. What I got was this (Dunno how to link): [ https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-21305?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel ] Alexa Linden updated VWR-21305: ------------------------------- Environment: . Assignee: ProductTeam Linden Labels: forProductReview vi-backlog (was: vi-backlog) > Potential Privacy Exploit - It is heuristically possible to use MoaP to link a client IP address to an avatar > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Key: VWR-21305 > URL: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-21305 > Project: 1. Second Life Viewer - VWR > Issue Type: Bug > Environment: . > Reporter: Joe Linden > Assignee: ProductTeam Linden > Priority: Minor > Labels: forProductReview, vi-backlog > Attachments: IP-Proof-of-PrivacyBreach.png > > > This is a temporary report on a major privacy breach risk with the new viewer. Upon request, the resident reporting this issue has offered to demonstrate the exploit documented below in safe place, with a personal guarantee that the obtained data (such as IP addresses) would, by definition, only be used for the risk test and would be scrambled and/or deleted immediately afterward. > Risk Definition: > This exploit relates to the rendering of HTML/Flash on prims (i.e. MoaP) and represents a major privacy breach risk which can also compromise security of an individual. > Test Configuration: > The test described below is done with a limited setup, but is fully functional, automatic and already operational. > * webserver with a database > * a small amount of server side scripts to register and process data > * standard viewer 2.0 > * 1 prim with media texture pointing to an (empty) web page on a fraudulent server and one simple script with standard LSL > * invisible placement of the prim (small size, hidden inside other prims or the land) > Testing: > * presence of avatars with the v2.0 viewer in the neighbourhood of the prim. Avatars must have media enabled (automatically or manually). > Testing results: > It is heuristically possible to link a client IP address to an avatar. Depending on the number of present avatars, the time they enter and they leave, it is possible to obtain ONE HUNDERD PERCENT accuracy. > I have attached a very simple example of obtained data, not heuristically processed. > Though it's already clear without scripts: Gentle Heron is the owner of one of the (scrambled) IP addresses. > The other IP address reveals the existence of 2 users or a user and his/her ALT on the same network. > Using the above configuration, it is possible to: > Direct exploit > * obtain IP addresses of any avatar > * obtain the country of origin, even the location of the SL user depending on the DNS information or additional information from hacking tables > * in case of static IP addresses, such as for companies, link an SL user to a company (or, e.g., his private business) > Enhanced exploit > * With the necessary tools, a hacker could be able to obtain personal data by attacking the PC of the SL user (Trojan horses, etc.). > * Since the SL User does NOT know about the website/server he actually connected to, this a major improvement for any hacker or bot network! Instead of having to hack websites to get a user connecting to a dangerous webserver, this is a direct and invisible way. > * Due to the amount of concurrent users on SL, this is a dream situation for any serious hacker. > Extreme possibilities > Any hacker with experienced SL knowledge is able to link SL information about an SL user to the real individual once he has the connection. > The anonymity of the SL user is completely undermined in this way. > Additional Concerns... > Given the fact that SL users completely rely on anonymity concerning their Second Life, including being part of several groups, including adult-related groups, blogs and posts on the internet,.... the real individual can be subject to DIRECT blackmail from the hacker(s) or hacker groups. > Linden Lab might experience serious trouble if SL users blame the company for Trojan horses and viruses on their PCs, as well as the lack of protection of privacy. > Final Remarks... > Even a proxy server would have issues beyond those of heavy traffic. It would allow people to surf anonymously, and also prevent the logging requirements of each country's state security. Or, in case of less "free" countries, circumvent their own system (China,...) > In theory, this was also possible with existing parcel media streams. Due to the ownership and parcel media restrictions, and also because they were limited to audio or video streams, developing and using a working exploit was less obvious. -- This message is automatically generated by JIRA.
