  1. After the server update yesterday I was curious to see if any progress was made regarding the testing of the scripted agents restriction. I just tested this new function now and it appears to have been implemented on the standard Second Life server code. I even made a pretty picture of it.

    Bots.png.6f6a50f0bc4671b69d4d4d2b8d3cedec.png

Here you have the full tutorial Scripted Agent Estate Access FAQ - deny_bots setting : Linden Lab (freshdesk.com)

For those who want to block scripted agents aka bots entering their region or sim or Homestead here is the easy to follow version.

    1. In the Second Life viewer you need to select the Developer Menu.

    2. You select the consoles option in the Developer Menu

    3. You select Region Debug Console (not the Debug Console but the REGION DEBUG CONSOLE)

    4. In the new window which you see above you type this:      Set deny_bots TRUE

    5. To verify you did it correct you type this:  Get Deny_bots this will give you a confirmation that you activated the setting. I do not think a sim restart is needed after activation.

*If you do not see the Developer menu in your viewer you press CTRL + ALT + Q

This is an informational post to make people aware of this new feature, please don't post meaningless replies of anything off topic. Thanks to @Linden Lab to implement this in a timely manner.

    What did the Count say?

Oh yes, that's what the Count said... Blatantly suggesting I'm a Bot Farmer, because I disagree with worthless ideas to fix the non-urgent un-problem, ideas that WILL be WORSE than the thing they are supposed to "Fix". The spamming of the ToS as if to warn me to cease my alledged illegal bot farmer behaviour, was a nice touch.

    Jog on.

You appear to be suffering from an issue where you perceive everything as a personal attack on yourself and need to constantly defend yourself even when you have no reason to do so.

I make a reference to the TOS to show you that collecting and harvesting data on Second Life users was never allowed in the first place and you call this spamming.

Anger management is a beautiful thing, let me round up the conversation with you like that.

There were 12 of the "Bots we cannot name anymore", 12, not 120, not 1200, not 12,000, just 12.

That is strange, I had to lock several hundred of these things in the previous two months. (These things did not come from the same origin of course).

Obviously YOU are clueless about the long running Grid Survey sight which did EXACTLY that, monitored how many regions there were, what maturity rating they were, what the concurrency figures were, hour by hour, day by day, year after year, to help make SL better.

Obviously YOU are clueless about the bots that survey what mesh heads and bodies people use, and provide listings showing not only how many are seen out on the grid, but trends, which are rising or falling in popularity, a useful tool for merchants in the mesh avatar business.

I am well aware of that, but are you aware about all the other anonymous ones where you do not have any clue on what they are collecting and for what purpose?

Read the post by @Count Burks above where he basically implies I am an Evil Bot Farmer, violating the ToS because I object strongly to your inane suggested "fixes".

Count Burks did say there is no reason for your aggression and fear. You are writing a book here on a topic that will have absolutely no impact on you. Hence my questioning of the reason why you are so upset about a policy that has absolutely no impact on you.

What do I have to gain?

How about NOT being falsely accused of being a bot and banned from SL because I spent less than a minute on a parcel which USED to be a shoe store, but is now owned by an overentitled jerk who thinks I shouldn't leave untill I've been there long enough to add to their traffic score.

How about NOT being falsely accused of being a bot and banned from SL because I teleport to a dozen stores in under an hour during the weekend bargain hunts, because somebody made a BLOODY AWFUL suggestion to fix the non-urgent un-problem.

Even if you are falsely accused by somebody that you are a bot Linden Lab will pretty soon realize you are an actual human. Your teleports during the weekend when you go sale hunting will not be used to identify you as a scripted agent. Roaming bots are using specific patterns. Any MMO game is able to distinct actual players from bot users. So there is no need for your fear.

8 minutes ago, Zalificent Corvinus said:

What do  YOU have to gain, from this drive to implement draconian measures that will adversely affect more people than bots?

I do not like being disturbed and annoyed by these scripted devices. I do not like my clients to be disturbed on their land. I do not want anything to enter the islands and start scraping data on myself or my customers without them asking me for permission.

These "scripted agents" are making a high percentage of residents in world uncomfortable which is why I (and others) asked for tools to block them. Linden Lab is now putting these tools in production and hopefully these tools will be enough to resolve the current issues with scripted agents.

Your fear is unwarranted, if you do nothing wrong you will be fine. Do you really think a woman that goes on her shopping trip will get identified as a bot?

21 minutes ago, Zalificent Corvinus said:

As for your prideful boasting about your victory over "Evil Bots", lets see what you so bravely fought against, you HERO.

"Their goal was to find out how many male and female avatars (sorry SL has no official trans setting) are active.
how many accounts are basic, premium or premium plus.
The set viewer language was detected as well. Additional to that date, they record every region they visited, how many avatars are on that region and if its mature, adult or general.
All data was hashed and there was no personal data collected."

Yeah, we REALLY needed protecting from that particular piece of EVIL, right ?

He was annoying me with his bot farm. Why should I be annoyed on my land because some little script kiddie needs to come and measure the length of my toes? Why should anyone be annoyed on their property because some little script kiddie needs to come and collect data on their parcel or region?

Linden Lab is selling a PRIVATE REGION product to its customers. PRIVATE REGION as in having privacy and not being bothered.

Also it seems are you clueless about the volume of these roaming bots in world. Nobody knows their intentions. It is naïve to think all of these "scripted agents" are collecting data on the maturity rating of a region, or they are doing it for the love of Second Life and to make Second Life a better place.

Again take a deep breath and realize if you do nothing wrong you will be fine.

Residents have the right to keep out people who are under 18 from their land.

Residents have the right to keep out people without Payment Info On File from their land.

And now Residents will have the right to keep out roaming bots from coming to their land.

There is no reason for your fear, it will have no effect on you or on any normal Resident in world, on the contrary it will improve the resident experience for many.

Really? Does it sound MORE or LESS paranoid after reading this piece of thoughtless "the cure is worse than the disease" hot garbage.

A "Brilliant Plan" to identify "Evil Unregistered Bots" by falsely accusing EVERYONE who goes bargain hunting in the weekend sales, as it's common to teleport to a damn site more than 8 regions in an hour, and stores often have teleport routing, landing you in the middle of the region for example.

The identification of roaming bots isn't extremely difficult at the moment. Roaming bots are not using standard viewers, if a report is being filed against a roaming bot Linden Lab can easily see which viewer such a scripted agent is using to teleport around. Based on this fact alone Linden Lab can already get a more clear picture and act as they need.

To give you an idea, this one was bothering me with his bot farm around 2 weeks ago. Take a look to see what happened bots [MondKeks] (mond-keks.de)

Also I encourage you to calm down in your speaking, all the aggression would make one think you have some personal agenda in all of this. Why are you so concerned? You are not running bots or spying on others are you? So why are you concerned bots are getting locked? You have nothing to gain from all of this correct?

Before you get on your horse again I encourage you to read section 6.2 of the Linden Lab TOS.

I will put this here for you directly from the TOS.

6.2 You agree that you will not post or transmit Content or code that may be harmful, impede other users' functionality, invade other users' privacy, or surreptitiously or negatively impact any system or network.

You agree to respect both the integrity of the Service and the privacy of other users. You will not:

    (i) Post or transmit viruses, Trojan horses, worms, spyware, time bombs, cancelbots, or other computer programming routines that may harm the Service or interests or rights of other users, or that may harvest or collect any data or information about other users without their consent;

I put it in nice red text to make it easy for you to follow along. Now let it all sink in and you will maybe understand that these data scrapers have been violating the Second Life TOS all along. Terms of Service | Linden Lab

Until recently the abuse department overlooked the entire situation until enough complaints piled up to look further into this. And now action is being taken. The entire reason for the measures being taken and a revision of the policy on bots it to make Second Life more user friendly and more respectful towards residents who pay to own land and have property in world.

That's possibly because, at least in the experience of some of my friends over the years who've had the misfortune to be stalked in SL by jealous or vengeful partners or exes, there's no need to deploy an army of bots to track people down when it's all too easy, and provides more sick fun,  to stalk people using a script to determine when they're online, a knowledge of their habits and favourite shops and hangouts, and the judicious use of alts.

The example I did provide is basic, yet there would certainly be a market for it. You can also take it much further when you start to think outside of the box if you get into setting up a spy service using a bot net.

While you can use a script to retrieve online status you cannot track people on the grid. While you might know the habits of these people you will not be aware of people their location if people decide to hide.

    Example which frequently occurs:

Avatar A and Avatar B are in a relationship and are living together on their land. After 3 weeks avatar A is fed up with the relationship for some reason and takes up her house, leaves the land, blocks Avatar B as she doesn't want to have anything to do with him anymore.

Avatar B is perplexed, tries to IM Avatar A without a response. For Avatar B who wants to know more and wants to know the whereabouts of his girlfriend it not suddenly becomes interesting to make use of such a tracking service.

Deploying a bot net or a single roaming bot can be used as a tracking system. The bot effectively provides more accurate information than any script can do. Now you have a valid reason why anonymous roaming bots should be frowned upon.

    34 minutes ago, Istelathis said:

With that said, bots are not necessary for others to do this, it probably makes it a lot easier though.  The more people know, the better.  Leaving behind a trail for others to follow back to your RL, is incredibly foolish.

Paranoia or not, people should at the very least knowledgeable not to make it so easy for others to turn them into a target.

You can have endless discussions about this. As Istelathis writes  " it probably makes it a lot easier though." With scripted agents you can do data harvesting, data mining, tracking, spying and tracing. You can push it really far when you start connecting avatar profile data with other profile data of people online.

Redzone was giving out more than "current location of Avatar X. it was handing out IP addresses, and lists of avatars using them, to "out"  the "filthy alts" that so many oldbies seemed to hate so much, that isn't the same as finding suckers willing to pay $10 a WEEK to know where an avatar is inworld.

Again, since this service you propose, doesn't violate the TOS,, and is a "guaranteed money maker" where are all the outfits running such a service?

While doing research on this topic several weeks ago I did find a bot service provider offering bots you can control to send in world and spy on chat conversations through IM messages. You can rent a bot send it to specific location, let it listen to chat conversations which the bot will then transfer to you through IM messages. And this is still a somewhat harmless service. Who knows what all these hundreds of roaming bots are exactly recording and what services are being offered through non public channels?

    Thoys Bot

What are they able to do?
You can let them follow you for instance. You can talk through them. Listen through them (through instant messages). They are able to sit and resit when they get kicked off something. And a lot more.

    How do I command them?
You command them through instant messages and local chat. For the command note look under here. Only the master can command the bot and the master is set in the bot tool.

So as you can see there are indeed bot services around that make money from offering spying tools.

The thing with roaming bots is that nobody, not even Linden Lab knows what they are being used for.

If that's such a simple and fool proof way to make money using "bot farms" why are there not a few dozen such services already, making money hand over fist?

Probably because the number of paranoid tinfoil hat wearers willing to pay $10 USD a week to spy on the location of some peoples avatars, is not great enough to cover the cost of renting your bot farm servers.

As a business plan, this ranks right along side "Developing a mind control implant for animals, so we can use sea turtles as living surfboards for tourists"

Yes and that is why Redzone was making hand over fist before Linden Lab closed it down. Purely on suspicion and curiosity of residents to know which alts did belong to who. Redzone was a top selling product before it was closed down.

That's what puzzles me, too.  Even if I didn't take respecting other people's privacy and confidentiality very seriously (which I do, in both First and Second Life), I can't think of any way I could monetize that kind of data, so it would be a bit of a waste of effort.

How to make money using a bot net in Second Life a tutorial for Innula Zenovka

    1. Rent a couple of dedicated servers

    2. Create a medium sized bot net with 100 avatars.

    3. Start a website named avitracker.com offering avatar tracking service for 1500 Linden per week payable at kiosk in Second Life.

Service includes tracking data of one particular avatar on the Second Life grid. But if you sign up for the Premium + package you can track up to 5 avatars anywhere on the grid. Premium + is 2500 Linden per week.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Deployment of bot net.

    Calculation

1 bot teleports every 10 seconds to another region and monitors the names of the avatars on the region.

    1 bot * 6 teleports per minute * 60 minutes = 360 teleports per hour.

    100 bots * 6 teleports per minute * 60 minutes = 36000 teleports per hour.

36000 teleports per hour / 27000 Second Life regions = 1 teleport per 0.75 hours or 1 teleport per 45 minutes.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Many residents remain at particular locations for an hour or longer so even with a small to medium sized bot net it is possible to track, spy and monitor on the movement of all Second Life avatars on the grid except within  regions which are not publicly accessible.

Many residents will want to know where their boyfriend or girlfriend or partner has been hanging out. Do not underestimate the curiosity of people so you will make money with such a service.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

To even hide more from Linden Lab you use servers collocated in separate data centers so it looks like you are running tiny bot farms for hobby purposes.

You also refresh sections of your bot farm every 5 to 10 days so that bots that got banned or restricted in access are no longer in circulation.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Do not underestimate what is possible with bot farms, how you can use them. This is a very basic example on how to deploy a bot farm to make money from it but it gives you insight why roaming bots should be blocked from the system.
