  1. The dreaded autoreturn!!! 0.0 Yeah, a lot of parcels like sandboxes and other places that allow you to rez objects often have a set interval after which the items should be returned to your lost and found folder. If you are rezzing things for which you do not have "copy" permission, you should be mindful of this setting. A lot of places post the autoreturn settings somewhere. If you don't see them, you can always find out what the autoreturn setting is by right clicking a bit of open land, select "About Land" from the menu, and then click on the tab "objects" One of the settings on that page is the autoreturn setting in minutes. That many minutes after you rez something there, it gets sent to your lost and found folder. Well, that is what should happen. Every now and then an inventory transaction will go awry causing items to be lost. Be sure it isn't in the lost and found folder. rez the first few things in that folder just to see what they are if the names aren't clear. If the items are truly lost, as happens more often than LL would like to admit, then the best course of action is to get another copy if it is a freebie. If it is something that you paid for, then go to your transactions history, find out exactly when you bought it, and provide that info to the seller. Most reputable sellers are pretty cool with providing you with a replacement if they can verify that you bought the item. That's why you dig up the exact date/time of your purchase before you notify them. They can check that against their transaction history to verify the sale. Good luck!
  2. Every now and then I find out that I am still a noob. This would be one of those times. 0.0
  3. Thanks so much for your response! I am preparing to resign myself to going with SL 2.5.2 but are there any other TPV viewers that have that option? (fingers crossed)
  4. Good morning all, Are there any viewers that are being actively updated that still offer multiple attachment points on the avie ie. two attachment points for the hand? Just wondering... Thanks.
  5. With that processor speed and that OS you probably are not going to get SL to work the way you want. That seems to be a laptop processor, right? Then upgrading your CPU isn't really an easy option. If you are stuck using that computer and you really really want to run SL, the only thing I could think of suggesting (besides a new computer which is not always an option) is perhaps changing your OS. It's a drastic step, but going to XP would put you within the recommendations. Or... You could try something like Ubuntu. You can download it legally for free, install it on a bootable flash drive along with a linux SL viewer and then use that when you wished to be on SL as a test. You can also install it alongside your existing OS in most cases since it takes up relatively little disk space if you wanted to in the future. I have actually managed to log into SL and conduct business in a very limited fashion on a netbook using the Ubuntu OS. It wasn't great, but I was able to move around and communicate enough to attend a meeting. (not recommended for normal SL use at all but it did work in a pinch.) Fiddling with your OS is not something you should take lightly of course, back up everything you hold dear before you do that sort of thing and have a good recovery disk handy should things go badly. That being said, it is an option...
  6. I am not sure fun threads fit into LL's new vision of the forums. Pity. But now that we are LL's new outsourced customer support, we shouldn't be gabbing when we should be working. Back to the answers fourm or no kudos for you! (cracks whip). (edited to change "help forum" to "answers forum" )
  7. Hi Mags!! (waves happily) This new forum is sort of a wasteland isn't it? And dispite all of what they have done... spam...
  8. I know what you mean when you say disjointed. The forums have been hit pretty hard. I had gotten quite used to seeing you guys around and do feel the loss of the messy old General Discussions forum. It would be nice for LL to be able to distinguish between "cleaning" and "killing" something but we all know what they are like. My SL usage has been tapering off for quite some time. I only go to a few places now but do quite enjoy those. I guess my SL usage has dwindled a bit since the death of the forums but I don't know if I can attribute that to the end of the forums or not. It is much more likely that my reduced presence on SL and the destruction of the forums are both due to the same root cause. I also can't help but notice that the Off Topic area, the area most like the old GD forum is now invisible unless you sign in. In other words, the public at large can no longer see what we are are talking about in here. If the old group is chatting online somewheres, somebody IM me inworld with the specifics. If not, we should, darnit.
  9. Yup, the region is full. As others have said, there is a finite limit to the number of prims that can be present on a sim. The sandbox had already had its allotment rezzed. I won't publicly give up my favorite sandboxes. You will have to find your own A good idea is to search for sandboxes, and then scroll through a few pages until you find some of the smaller, less used ones. Just skip the first few pages of the search results. You will eventually be able to find a quiet little corner where you can rez a few boxes or fiddle with something small. I've used some of my favorite spots for years and met some of my best friends there.
  10. Others have already covered the basics so welcome!! After downloading the viewer and activating your account (checking your e-mail) run around, ask a bunch of questions and don't be afraid to walk up to strangers and say hi! Oh, and go easy on the sparkly stuff and gestures. The "search" function will be your friend. Search for "freebies" early on. There is a lot of free stuff out there that you can find and use to get started. Have fun! Just don't take this place to seriously
  11. ooohh U R gonna git in trouble.... :smileysurprised: As someone who may or may not have gotten in trouble once or twice, having a few AR's filed against you is not in itself something to be overly concerned about. People file AR's for any and all reasons. Their report will get reviewed and either some sort of action will be taken or the report will be tossed out because it was written by a ... (reminds himself that we are being poilte these days and moves on...) Sadly, there is very little conformity in the response to AR's It entirely depends on who reviews it and how they are feeling that exact second. I wish I was kidding. It's pretty much completely arbitrary with LL almost always siding with whoever processed the AR. Odds are, nothing will come of this at all, a warning e-mail at most... odds are... but since there are very few clear standards or if there are, LL hasn't publicised them there is no way to be absolutely sure. That all being said, you are almost, certainly in the clear... probably...
  12. To answer your question, there is no real way to have two avatars on the same account. One avatar, one account. Of course, you can have as many outfits as you like and you can change your screen name. If you want a true second identity, then you will have to sign up for a second account. There is no limit to the number of accounts you can have. "Alts" are as many have said an alternate account. You "sign up" again making a second (or third, or fifth, or twentieth) account. For the most part, these are treated as separate entites by SL. Most people use their alts for perfectly non-disruptive reasons. For example, someone wants to test their creations before distrubuting them to make sure that all the permissions are set correctly. Or, someone has a "serious business" account but still wants to be "silly". Or, well the reasons abound really. Some people do use alternate accounts to do their "dirty work" ie, harass, get revenge, or "grief". This can work to a limited extent but be aware that significant violations of the TOS can result in IP based banning and the like. There are many people that want there to be a limit to "disposable" accounts, since their abuse is so common. So far, LL has not placed any restrictions on account creation nor are they expected to do so.
  13. Based on what I have seen and heard, there is no real "standard" time. It can be either resolved quickly, take forever, or never get resolved at all. My advice is after giving it a little while after each attempt, try again. It seems that there are a few folks "up there" who actually give a darn and are capable of helping you out. There are also some others... If your account matters to you, ie. has enough lindens to be worth the hassle or has possessions that would be hard to replace or that you put a lot of time into setting up, then keep making attempts through all channels available, including snail mail. Eventually you will be able to slip past the "gatekeepers" and get in touch with someone who actually gives a darn about you and has the ability to help. It's a time-honored way of dealing with a large, cumbersome orginization with poor internal commuinications. When you don't like the answer that one person gives you, ask someone else the same question. You just might get an answer more to your liking. It shouldn't work, but it often does...
  14. I agree wholeheartedly. "Filtering" out (discriminating against) "gay females" is very offensive in itself, as well as being a very disturbing glimpse into the possible future of SL. I wish I could say that I surprised and shocked but that's simply not true. LL has been heading this way for quite some time and this is just a little more of the same. SL is trying to have it both ways. It still likes to imply that "romance" and "hooking up" are quite possible (just take a quick look at it's website) but seems to still be actively supressing any expression of that part of the resident's identity down to the point of censoring the basic terms. It will most likely fail in its attempt neither being truly "kid friendly" or "family safe", as if it ever really had a market there in the first place, and also no longer be a place that is conducive to the freedom of expression that its mostly adult customers came here for in the first place. Nothing has changed. LL is still courting a customer base that it never has nor never will have and still actively marginalizing the very folks that keep the lights burning. It's the same thing they did yesterday and it's aparently their plans for tomorrow as well.
  15. While the horses are certainly a suspect, I recommending going over your land, especially if more people than yourself have build rights, just to make sure that no surprises have found their way onto your parcel. Have you added anything recently to your parcel that is heavily scripted? Is your neighbor's parcel with the horses on the same sim as your own? But, yeah, odds are it's the horses.
  16. No matter what we "give up" or how many restrictions we tolerate, the spammers will find a way in. I think those willing to give up money, access, "freedoms" or whatever will in the end still have to tolerate spam. They will just have to do it with less money or whatever than they had before. We will never be able to completely eliminate spam. For every filter, safeguard, restriction, rule, etc that is put in place, the spammers will be able to find a way around it. At some point the "cure" becomes as bad as the "disease" with outbreaks still happening anyway. So, I guess my answer is that I am not willing to give up too much at all, since I believe it to be an essentially pointless sacrifice with no real payoff in the end.
  17. I think the changes in the forums are a pretty clear example of some of the changes of late. I headed to the moderate and adult lands so things really haven't changed for me inworld, yet. There have been some small changes. Some areas have changed their ratings to properly adhere to the rather restrictive ratings system for example. Sooner or later, there will be the next scandal. We've had them happen ever since this place first went online. What will happen to SL after that will really tell the tale. So, to answer your question. No, the teens have not caused a big impact on my SL experience...yet. I do think that long term, all of SL will wind up exactly like this forum has. Whether that is a good or bad thing depends entirely on one's point of view. (edited to remove a completey redundant sentence)
  18. Welcome, I wish you luck in your new endeavor here. I wonder what you have in store for us. I have a pretty good idea what we have in store for you... srry about that... We rarely agree on much, but we all have one thing in common. We really like this place. SL is a great deal of fun and despite more than a few things that you will hear about in detail many many times no doubt, there is enough good stuff and great people to keep even the most cynical of us logging in. There is still a great deal of potential in this old rickety platform. I wish you luck it finding it.
  19. Too funny! I'm glad I wasn't drinking when I reviewed this thread. Who would have thought that someone could get themselves in trouble with the display name feature?
  20. I actually do agree about the age verification. It is not fool-proof (or more precisely clever-proof). I have said so myself several times. However, I still believe that a majority of the people who are age-verified are indeed who they said that they were. At least enough of them are who they say that they are to make any statement that they are "anonymous" to be essentially false which was the point I was trying to make. I am not saying that the age-verification system is a good system. I'm saying that most people using it are most likely being honest since it is easier to use their information than not. It is decent enough identity verification but does not serve well as a "bouncer" checking id's. As far as the "sex-trade" (masturbation trade is more like it) goes, it would almost be better if it did give us a "dirty" reputation than the "no reputation" that we have now. I do occasionally mention that I am into SL from time to time. To be honest, for every person who looks at me and says "Isn't that a sex game?" I get many many more confused looks and "What's SL?" or worse "Yeah, I heard about SL... Is that still around?". In the early days if the internet I got "I'm not interested in the internet. I am not into porn." much more often than I get the same now with SL. The porn laden reputation of the internet did not exactly slow it down much did it? You mention other grids. I'm a fan of one of them myself. But my question was what does this entire "Virtual Worlds Technologies", to borrow a phrase from Nany, offer the "business world"? What can it do better, cheaper, or more reliably than anything else can do? I have tried and I really can't come up with anything. The reason why I embarked on this little tangent was to address the whole "Adult content makes us look bad and that's why there isn't more investment here." arguement. I put forward that there is no investment here because there is nothing to invest in. The only revenue stream that this place and those who try to make a buck here have to look forward to is the one they already have, the existing residents who come here for entertainment (or to gratify some urge... creative or otherwise). If LL (and SL) wants to prosper, then it needs to take care of the only revenue stream it ever really had, its existing customers. Once they lost sight of that, things went... well where they are now. Until they "get it", it won't get any better. The whole adult content debate was raging (or at least simmering) long before the teens showed up. It's a shame that some of the same crusaders are now snatching up the minors to use as tools to further their own agenda. I have tired of the teen issue as well and have already made the adjustments that I need to in order to enjoy SL after their introduction. I do think that it's a bad idea poorly implemented, but that's LL these days. Their slogan should be "Bad ideas poorly implemented". I am not a huge fan of adult content. I am however a big fan of SL. I view the attacks on adult content yet another "attack" upon yet another segment of my fellow residents, the only real support SL has now and probably ever will. We aren't exactly "doing great" as it is. How many more disruptions of any part of our customer base that numbers over a few hundred strong can we survive? That is why I tend to push back when I hear the whole "adult content is holding us back" line of crap and will continue to do so. Poor businessmen and bad designers would rather blame their lack of success on the fact that someone else is having fun here than on the real reason for their failures. LL seems to be inclined to do the same. If they do somehow manage to successfully "sanitize" SL, who are they going to blame then? Oh, don't worry. They will find someone. They always do.
  21. People get fired for getting caught with porn on an office computer all the time even if it costs their employer money to fire them. I don't have to look up examples of that for you. You can do it yourself. Furthermore, it isn't good money. Do you have a job that pays you more than US$10K per year? Do you think anyone would pay you that much without knowing your legal name? You can't conduct business that generates good money anonymously. To conduct business that generates real money, contracts need to be enforceable and tax collectors need to be satisfied they are getting their cut. You can't do that with a business that everyone involved in is ashamed to admit they are associated with. SL sex trade is not good money. It is a burden and a hinderance that no one wants to be associated with, not even its own merchants and customers. Who is generating money anonymously? The real sex-trade requires age verification and the merchants have payment information on file. The porn on the office computer example is irrelevant. Someone surfing for porn on his employer's time and on his employer's equipment is committing any number of ethics and security violations. How does that pertain to a discussion of the "sex trade" in SL (I will let that gross exaggeration slide for now) where the participants are either merchants, who have their payment info on file and therefore not "anonymous" and their customers, who we can assume are on their own time and on their own equipment? We can poke holes in the age verification system if we want but the vast majority of folks probably used their own information to register. Most age verified folks are in there legitimately. You repeatedly claim that adult content is a burden and a hindrance, but you have done nothing to support that. And you refuse to provide an example of business avoiding an otherwise profitable technology because of "adult content" because quite simply there isn't one. You brought up an employer firing an employee for porn at work even though it might cost them a buck or two as an example of business abandoning a technology because it is dirty. Not the same thing. Now if you can find me a business that turned off all of its computers and shipped them off because they found porn on one of them then it would. Of course you won't find that because it makes no sense. I would even settle for a business divesting itself of all internet under the same circumstances. Again, that scenario is laughable. It's as laughable as the argument that you are trying to support. If "Virtual Worlds Technologies" were the next big thing and SL was too "dirty" for someone to set up shop here, why then did one of these large enterprises not set up their own VR? The answer is because it is not profitable to do so. I have a question for you? Name me one thing that is possible here from a business standpoint that can't be done anywhere else. Name one thing where there isn't already an application in place that does it better, cheaper, and more reliabily than SL ever could.
  22. I suspect it isn't the teens Linden Lab or its successors wants to do business with. It is people who are not hiding behind anonymity. People who are not ashamed to be associated with what they say and do are the ones who make a real difference in the world. People who are involved in the sex trade in SL hide behind anonymous accounts. But Linden Lab employees are not anonymous. What happens in Second Life reflects on their real world identity and career. They don't want to be associated with the sex trade any more than the people who are participating in it do. There are a lot of objectionable ways to make money. But Linden Lab may well decide that the costs of being involved in the sex trade outweigh the benefits. Um.... people who are actively involved in the sex trade have to age-verify. Someone making money regardless of how has to have good payment info online in order to cash-out. Look, SL doesn't have a "seamy" or "tawdry" reputation anymore. It has a "necrotic" one. The media is not saying that SL is sex riddled, it's saying that it's dead in the water. That's why business is reluctant to invest here. No business is going just to throw money down a hole, no matter how attractive "virtual worlds technologies" are to some people. An endowment in the business of giving away money might toss some down a hole like SL, sure. Giving away money is their "business". Don't confuse that with a for-profit enterprise deciding that there is a point to SL. Are any of them actually left? Phone-sex does not put business off of using the phone. A deluge of porn did not keep business from heavily investing in the internet. Vivid entertainment did not make Disney shy away from DVD's (or VHS for those who remember them). People "parking" on some scenic overlook did not make Domino's stop using cars to deliver pizza. Give us one example, just one, of some otherwise profitable technology being abandoned by profit hungry businesses just because it was a little tawdry. If SL was a place for real business to make real profit, then they would be here. Blaming the SL "sex-trade" for the lackluster performance of SL as a whole is just plain silly.
  23. See, Nany? This is how it's done. This person did a fantastic job of supporting your position and lays out a good progression of logical statements supporting your premise. For the record, Harmony, I think you are mostly spot on. With adult content driven entirely into Zindra, Making it it's own grid and having SL Disney World as a separate product could be done simply. I think a completely sanitized mainland is now inevetible. The only thing that does not work for me is that the senior people are leaving and there is still no announcement of a sale. From what I've seen IRL (sadly I've been through more than one buyout) is that a lot of the brass sticks around to assist in the transition and then leave after the sale. Big layoffs in the mid and mid-upper ranks make sense, but now two head honchos gone and no announcement? Still, you make a lot of sense.
  24. my guess is 1. It's not going to be LL any more. 2. It's not going to be Adult content any more. 3. It may not even be SL any more. 4. The key decisions have already been made. Ah, Nany.... You have repeatedly conjured up the above statements but each time I ask you to support them you fail to conjure up any evidence of any sort to back them up. So, once again I ask you why do you think that this will be the case. And what, pray tell, are the "key decisions" that you are talking about? You are big on fluff and really low on substance. What have you seen in your crystal ball that makes you think this way today? Conjure us up some details.
  25. Cabbage Acanthus it is not as easy as you make it out. Will someone be able to file charges on a person in another country? I doubt that Japan will extridite one of their Nationals for such. Question would not California law apply since that is where the servers are located? Mississipi can take a flying frack as far as I am concerned, crummy neocons! Those are good questions, but not answers. "Will someone be able to file charges...?" "Would not California law apply....?" The burden of effort it would take for me to find out for certain one way or the other is far too much for me to worry with. It is a lot easier for me to simply go through my landmarks and delete all the G rated ones. There is plenty of SL left on the M regions so that I can still have an enjoyable time here. I will let someone else set the precedents while I enjoy the M and A rated regions of SL as if the whole mess does not exist. Because for me, it no longer does. I can easily enough avoid it.
