  1. After 4 years in Second Life I still shop in-world, and intend to re-open my store in-world when I get time. Linden Lab are missing a trick here because I am not alone. Yesterday was a prime example, I bought a couple of things on the Marketplace and then went to check out a couple of landmarked sales someone gave me. I spent more in-world. Shopping is a process, and if you are in the mood it is not always a chore. It is fun. As far as my business concerns are concerned, I've done the private region thing, it took every ounce of fun out of SL for me and for a year I was chasing tier plus VAT. I was in a lose lose situation. I sold it in May 2009 and was lucky to get a price that wasn't an insult - albeit not what I paid for it. Since I've been on mainland, I've found the fun again. I've learned to forget the expensive perks of owning estate and work with what my RL purse will allow. I have remembered SL for me is entertainment, first and foremost. If people like what I do it is a bonus. I don't have cable, gym membership, a car or smoke - I have SL. I think maybe other people who leave were more involved in business first and foremost and not the community, or not the wider community perhaps - More a niche community. For me the community comes first, business comes second. I am a realist on profits - While I work full time in RL and insist on doing RL voluntary work after work I will never have the time to make a profit in SL.
  2. My suggestion would be: roll back and stick to the first and lastnames as we had. Why invent a solution, while it was already there (and working, as far as I know...). ETA: I mean only the names when you create an account, the display-names..oh well, that can work anyway, if people like it, why not. I thought the way legacy names was before this was a selling point, loved it. I don't mind if display names are kept but firstname and lastname was perfect the way it was to me.
  3. I got classified as romantic in the destination guide but if you are the jazz club type it probably wouldn't fit your ideal. It's not crowded now the initial destination guide flurry is settling down, it did rain noobs for about a week though, hence the basic etiquette signage I had to hastily put up O_O It's mainly the beach and central area which is the hangout, the surrounding houses are occupied by residents and have security in them. Oh, and it is mature rated, non-free-sex romantic but you sound savvy enough to understand that. It has a raft you can have dinner on towards the rear water end, a couples swing, campsite with campfire and couples tent with sleeping bags - couples and singles. Intan near the hut/club. Very low key and unclubby though - Japanese/Fantasy/Made-up-as-I-go-Along. You can get to it via the destination guide - romantic spots or via my profile. Name is in my signature. Oh and it is Red-Zone-and-similar free too.
  4. In many minor cases, a typical eject/ban/mute is sufficient. This is true, I use the land tools 9 times out of 10, my security system is for other people to use such as staff and residents. I don't need much at all. And, I don't really care if alts slip in either. If alts enter it is technically not cheating - Just gaming the contest. I would rather they didn't but I'm not giving myself an ulcer over it.
  5. I'm a Brit and own a hangout but it has to be said we don't exclusively only have Brits there. Regulars include Brits, Romanians, Americans and even a couple of New Zealanders. If you want more Brits than that it probably isn't your thing, it is very unpredictable nationality wise.
  6. Someone said this in my club earlier, my understanding always was once your content in your inventory was replaced with "IP Replacement" it was no longer usable, therefore no longer a live issue regardless of whether it is deleted or not. Any ideas where this rumour started?
  7. It has happened a lot in the 4 yrs I've been here. The recommendation about a secondary form of contact e.g. Aim or similar is a very good one. I have done that. PC problems and lack of money, house moves, that sort of thing, are reasons I get for spells away but some never return. I try to tell people if I'm going to be away personally but sometimes things are just more complicated than we know. Sometimes I wonder if they retire their avatar and start afresh as a new alt, but that could be the cynic in me...

I have read all the different rantings that have been posted and there is always that nasty sarcastic tone to them. Unfortunately, it makes me discredit the post. I would also like to point out that there is really no need to act this way. I am the first to admit that maybe I need to look at the full capabilities or malice of the system. I would like to be educated on the system before being crucified for using it. I am also not the only sim or business owner to use this system. There has been at least 4000+ systems sold. Hmmm... Somebody must also be using it besides me. I won't use Red Zone and understand the frustration about it but I certainly don't feel you should be hung, drawn and quartered for using it either. Enough has been said about what it does and does not do - I am profoundly disgusted I have been scanned against my will by others and entered into the database but I think your approach is polite and pragmatic. Certainly undeserving of a preach speech. It is for you to make your own, educated, decision.
  9. The idea has merit, I prefer shopping in-world, and I do, but search on the marketplace is just more effective if you are doing a large search. In dealing with quite a few new people using the destination guide, I am having to tell them about the marketplace and redirect them to the website when really they need to be practising in-world in their viewer because V2 still has a learning curve. I don't use V2 so I forget what is in it now, but if it keeps things a bit more immersive for new people it will hold their attention for longer.
  10. There is a survey going around but I never got invited to it and am not certain it is from that address.
  11. I'm an adult living with dyslexia too and find it very difficult to learn languages. Don't be discouraged, translators are a big help.
  12. I get it a lot too, usually newbies, I accept and only remove them if they become a nuisance. I never prune my friend list as a rule.
  13. If your traffic has gone up dramatically check to see if you have been put in the destination guide. My traffic shot up and it took me a while to figure it.I was put in the destinations, and that boosted traffic. You do not get any message to tell you ,worth a check. OMG you are right, I'm in the Destination Guide. I never even considered it for a second so thank you for telling me to look LOL. I have just got disproportionately excited - I need a first life O_O

I purchased a my.secondlife.com advert that doesn't go live till 7th but is paid for. Does this improve my search ranking? Thanks, I'll go check now, I just assumed no one would be interested enough to ever put me in something like that LOL
  15. I think it depends too on what kind of club environment you like, some don't feel like they are in a club without the "hoo" gesture spam, which is something I'm not into. I don't go to any club but my own really unless a DJ friend is working, or a singer friend - Then I go to show support. I have been to other clubs but not really enjoyed them due to lag and spam, although very occasionally I hear a DJ and think wow. I have been to Ambrosia and thought it was ok. I have been to Dance Island but didn't like it. Different people want different things from a club. I like a chilled out environment where the music is good and the people can construct a sentence that is not generated by a gesture trigger. Now I'm factoring in avoiding places that have dubious security practices, of course.
  16. The only device I have protects residential areas with corner marked zones and enables them to control their own white list, which negates the need for them to rez their own cr**py orbs. The same product is in my club but it is set to monitor, and not to take any action (although it can). I have it for staff, I refuse to deed my mainland so they have remote huds they can use to access the system. Until that point I saw no need for security beyond land tools. It does no alt detecting. It's Triple Labs GWS.

  18. I was lucky to sell mine May of 2009 but it was very stressful. I think I was probably one of the last crop of people to recoup some of my losses on my private island and did consider if I would have to abandon it at the time. Mine had a coveted tier date.
  19. Been premium since May 2007, currently got 1/4 of a mainland region plus my 512 sq m fee free elsewhere for when I need to escape. I've always owned directly from LL either via mainland or for a private island so probably always needed premium membership. I pay annually as I get clobbered for VAT and it makes it a bit cheaper. Stipend gets swallowed on classifieds but is very nice.
  20. I find it odd you never got an email and here is why. Ever had the email notification that LL need to take over your account to investigate for 30 mins and it is generic, something your av might have seen or done. This has happened to me twice in 4 years, both times I got an email before they did it and an email after saying they were done and I could have my account back. Both times I never found out why. I assumed people had ARd me, club owners can rack up a few ARs over the years, most loon ones. I know this is not the same as administrative hold and may be a different dept but it is an example of how they communicate.
  21. The only real issue with mainland for me is neighbours, and I've owned a lot of mainland. I have nice plots of land but had to get creative to get rid of glowing monstrosities and my script performance is constantly bad due to a self replicating physics scripted thingy on some plonkers land near me. I can't tell him to move it so I'm stuck with running a business in that environment praying he moves. Object issues such as parcel encroachment I easily solve myself because I feel confident asking people to move things in that scenario. I think it is about doing your research before you move in and trying not to stress yourself out when you get selfish people causing you issues. The random traffic you get on mainland is a constant source of entertainment for me and a feature I missed when I owned a private island for a year. It's not all bad, the powerlessness I feel about performance being broken by my neighbours is the only thing that wears me down. Your nice mainland can change overnight if someone moves in with a truly unique idea of beauty and I think having coping strategies in place helps.
  22. Yeah I have to say running events has got far harder than it used to be due to diminished visibility in search, events disappearing when I know I've listed them, things like that, niggles adding up really.
  23. I have a feeling if you list the event before you change the landing point it works. I'm sure i've done this. I list the event on search then change the landing point after. Give it a test go and let me know if it works.
  24. A bit too white, though I totally understand the convenience of white, I have similar issues with the Marketplace but for those of us with visual problems an accessibility widgety thing on all white LL sites enabling us to change the background colour might be considered to be kind. I've seen the widgety thing on a UK University site. A minor grumble as I don't want to wear my fugly speshul glasses.
  25. LOL this was in relation to Venus' post about an adult section but it didn't make it look like a reply - A very valid point, I hope it is taken on board.
