  1. @ Tammy Armundson I know I have been slow in replying to your posts. I've had other priorities. Some people have pointed out that this was possibly a RL adult roleplaying a young teenager. While that is a possibility except for the fact she is still on the grid I don't believe so. Much of that is based on the entirety of my chats with her. For the purpose of this response I am going to assume that she really was who she said she was. You have accused me of being a "self-righteous intolerant vigilante," with out really knowing me or my personal opinions on this subject. For one thing I am on record saying, "That if by the time your kids are 16 they are not able to handle many if not most adult topics then you as a parent have failed." Again assuming that this girl was really 15, she was playing with fire. I did have several choices I could have made. I could have just walked away and refused to have any further contact with her and just 'ignore' the situation. I could have chosen to play the part of the platonic father and talked with her about how she was playing with fire and be there as a friend as she explored her sexuality. Yes, I had other options. For better or for worse I made the choice that I did. It was based on two things, first the SL TOS and secondly on the entirety of my conversations with her which is something that you are not privy to nor am I going to post them. What I am going to tell you is this: That based upon my conversations with this girl and the way she responded to things that I said I could have emotionally wrapped her around my little finger. This is not bragging on my part, just a simple fact. Yes, I am convinced that this girl is only 15. And even though she is still on the grid, personally I would need to see the proof otherwise to change my mind in this situation. I can only hope that she does not get involved with the wrong man or men here. She could find herself caught up in situations that she is not capable of handling. All said and done I believe I did the right thing in this situation.

  3. I had a guy I caught in my place beg me to share my home with him. He told me he would share all his girl friends with me could supply me more women than a man could ever use. When I told him I wasn't interested he questioned where my sense of Fraternity was. When it comes to my home I'm like the grumpy old man who doesn't like strangers walking across his yard. freeze/eject/ban P.S. While I know there are ways around it I am in a sky box in a no fly / no landmark creation SIM. He had to really have put some effort in to getting to my place. .
  4. While on the one side many (or at least some of us) have been annoyed by the word filters in the Forums, on the other side I am constantly amused by the spell checker here. As you see them, share the gaffes here. I found it especially amusing that a suggested replacement for 'blogs' is 'flogs.'

  6. squashy Beeswing wrote: @ Perrie: I've continued to use V2 for most of my time in SL, but the web-based profiles are nearly the last straw for me. I say 'nearly' 'cos how do we know that the TPV viewers aren't going to follow suit? I've really only stuck with V2 as long as i have 'cos i figured that the TPVs would follow along sooner or later with all the changes, (emphasis added) It is my understanding that the Phoenix team is using the Viewer 1 iteration of profiles in Firestorm. Whether or not this winds up getting broken by LL when they discontinue Viewer 1 I don't know. Torley started a thread about the web based profiles and I have left a comment there myself. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Your-Avatar/INTERESTS-In-MY-Web-Profiles-Tab-Early-questions-amp-answers/m-p/771961#M3001
  7. If you are using Phoenix there you can open the 'animation explorer' and see and/or stop any animation from there. I still get puzzled however when people say someone 'forced' an animation upon them with out the individual somehow accepting it. Maybe there is a hack that this can be done with but all the animators I have talked to say it isn't possible. Not saying it didn't happen to you. Just that it has always puzzled me.
  8. For a word or phrase to be trademarked it has to be tied to a product or service. If I was to try and use the phrase "you deserve a break today" to promote my product, that would be an infringement. For me to just say to you, "you deserve a break today," no one can stop me from saying that. Then again, maybe Wendy's should have sued all the politicians who started asking "Where's the Beef." when that became famous. http://www.againstmonopoly.org/index.php?perm=886089000000000931 (disclaimer: IANAL)
  9. @Torley Has someone at the Lab forgotten the beauty and simplicity of "tabbed" browsing. With the old style of profiles it was a quick and simple matter of clicking through tabs to view someone's picks. Now with the Web Based profiles I actually will have to open 10 different web pages to view in detail a person's Picks. We've made it more work, not less. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Discussions/Arthur-Miller-s-The-Death-Of-A-Profile/m-p/511327#M252167
  10. The web based profiles are terrible. Rather than fast, fun & easy it makes it more work to view someone's profile. When they originally started I started a discussion, "The Death Of The Profile" ( http://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Discussions/Arthur-Miller-s-The-Death-Of-A-Profile/m-p/511327#M252167 ). It is a short thread but I think I was pretty thorough in covering the problems. Sometimes I think Linden Lab needs to learn, "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It." Seriously.
  11. First of all, thank you to those who have replied so far. And thank you Willow for bringing this back to the subject at hand. There were several reason for my filing the AR, first and foremost was to protect myself. I knew I had not done anything untoward with this girl and that the chat logs (which I provided to LL) would clearly show that all I had done was try to help her get oriented in SL. And then there are what would be to me the secondary issues of TOS violations on her part. But the even bigger issue to me here personally is not knowing the outcome of the AR. I don't know how many AR's a day LL receives. Given how butthurt sensitive some people in SL can be I can only imagine it's a load. This alone may make it difficult for LL to inform us of the outcome of their investigation. Regardless of whether she is actually RL of legal age, by telling me that she was 15 Y.O., she clearly was soliciting me for sexual age play which as far as any of us know is a perma-bannable offense. If I had taken her up on her offer to pixelate with me I could very well have found myself gone from the Grid now. Right now, if I should bump into her on the grid, see her with another male avatar, I'd be hard pressed not to warn that individual about her. And yet I would find myself in a catch 22 because as someone pointed out, it is a violation of the TOS to share someone else's age. I could only hope that common sense would prevail at the Lab in a situation like this.
  12. @ Dresden Ceriano: Thank you for refreshing my memory on that part of the TOS. @ Vladi Hazlenut: I am not aware of anyone ever being censored for posting name redacted chat logs. I could be wrong. It's an interesting point you raise. I'd be very surprised given the title of this thread if it hadn't been looked at by a moderator. I don't know, and beyond what I already posted I am sure not going to push the issue.
  13. @ Penny Patton You make some excellent points here. Thank you. One of the other issues that I think may come into play here was the available computing power at the time SL was designed including the screen resolutions people had available to them. In other words, SL was designed originally for viewing on lower screen resolutions which affected the way people saw things on their monitors. I wasn't here when SL was launched. I can only guess that people saw the initial builds that LL provided and followed suit. Now that we have more computing power available perhaps builders will be able to begin 'rescaling' their builds to make better use of space. Camera placement is an issue here. It really needs to be made easier for the individual user to reset their default camera angle, etc. so that they can have optimal view of the world based on their computing power. The 'AgentHeight' issue is something I suspect the majority of residents know nothing about. This is why I said there is a need for a standard. One that works in terms of the world as we view it. Many do not understand concepts like 'bounding box.' It all get's interesting. One thing I always get a kick out of is the video of the prototype for SL and the Primitar, which can be viewed here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Avatar Thank you for your insight here.
  14. Dresden Ceriano wrote: Please, don't take this the wrong way, I'm not sticking up for this girl in any way and I'm not saying you did the wrong thing. But isn't revealing personal RL information about someone to another resident a TOS violation? Just saying, maybe you should keep the fact that you may have done that to yourself. ...Dres Privacy Policy: http://secondlife.com/corporate/privacy.php#privacy6 Disclosing Personal Information in Profiles, Forums or within Second Life "You may choose to disclose personal information in our online forums, via your Second Life profile, directly to other users in chat or otherwise while using Second Life. Please be aware that such information is public information and you should not expect privacy or confidentiality of this information." This is different than the issues with RedZone which was among other things possibly (and I only say possibly because LL never made an official statement) found in violation of 8.3 of the TOS http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php#tos8 , "(i) Post or transmit viruses, Trojan horses, worms, spyware, time bombs, cancelbots, or other computer programming routines that may harm the Service or interests or rights of other users, or that may harvest or collect any data or personal information about other users without their consent;" (my bolding for emphasis). So unless someone is aware of something else in the TOS or CS that I am missing, I don't believe that there was a problem with my sharing this fact with the hostess. Once the girl told me she was 15, it became "public information."
  15. Willow Danube wrote: I'm just surprised the little girl you mentioned survived this long. As I stated, I didn't see her logged on for a couple of weeks. She had joined the group at the club where I met her and it was the only group in her profile. I had checked it a few times to see her last log in date and she had not been logged in for a couple of weeks. I was doing what I could to watch the situation. I had informed the club hostess, who had also been trying to help this girl get 'oriented' to SL what had transpired. The girl's Ava was only a few days old when I met her and she had told me a RL friend had told her about SL.

  19. Several weeks ago I met and 'friended' a Newbie at one of the clubs I frequent. Over the course of a week I had several chats with this girl. The more we IM'd, the more convinced I became that this girl could be no more than 14 or 15 years old. So I decided to try and find out. This is from my chat logs: [2011/01/12 16:36] Resident: do u kno where NOOB ISLAND is [2011/01/12 16:37] Perrie Juran: That was one of the LM's I sent you... a friend just gave it to me when i asked good places for free clothes [2011/01/12 16:37] Perrie Juran: Also called "Freebies Island" [2011/01/12 16:38] Resident: i think im talking about da island where u can get neckad n **bleep** with me so they will know i hav a bf [2011/01/12 16:40] Perrie Juran: i dont know [2011/01/12 16:40] Resident: ok [2011/01/12 16:40] Resident: ok [2011/01/12 16:40] Resident: so u want me 2 go alone [2011/01/12 16:41] Perrie Juran: i didnt know it was like that there [2011/01/12 16:41] Resident: no its not da island u talkin about [2011/01/12 16:44] Perrie Juran: i cant join you right now [2011/01/12 16:44] Resident: ok than ill talk 2 u lata [2011/01/12 16:44] Resident: ttyl [2011/01/12 16:44] ttyl [2011/01/12 16:51] Resident is Offline [2011/01/12 16:54] Resident is Online [2011/01/12 21:48] Resident: hi tp me [2011/01/12 21:57] Perrie Juran: Hi [2011/01/12 21:58] Perrie Juran: How are you tonight? [2011/01/12 22:05] Resident: last year in high school [2011/01/12 22:05] Perrie Juran: so you are 17? [2011/01/12 22:05] Resident: no 15 So I filed an underage abuse report and marked myself to appear off line to her. I did get the automated response from Linden Lab that they had recieved my report. I saw her log in for two more days and then no more. Now here it is several weeks later and I see her logging in again. And I am concerned. I feel like this is one of those situations where knowing the results of the AR is needed. Maybe this person was only RP'ing a 15 Y.O. But then that would be sexual age play, a perma-bannable offense for wanting to have sex with me as a 15 Y.O. It sure sounded like she wanted to pixelate to me. I'm concerned. Personally I do not want to have any contact with this girl just to protect myself. Not knowing the results of LL's investigation I don't want to file another AR and get in trouble myself for abusing the AR system. What do you think?
  20. Welcome Aboard Jeff. I did do a little bit of googling. Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubSpace_%28video_game%29 ) had some interesting notes on Subspace: History "SubSpace evolved from a game originally called Sniper (1995), a project to test the effects and severity of lag in a massively multiplayer environment over dialup connections.[9] After its creators realized its viability as an actual game, public beta testing began in February, 1996, and it became fully public later that year. The game was released commercially in December 1997 with a list price of US$27.99 for unlimited play, requiring no monthly or hourly fees.[10] The game was originally developed by Burst, led by Jeff Petersen (aka Jeff P.), Rod Humble and Juan Sanchez, for the US branch of the now-defunct Virgin Interactive." Hopefully he has some great ideas for reducing Lag in SL EDIT: Adding a link to CNets archived review of Subspace. A Cool Review: http://reviews.cnet.com/pc-games/subspace-pc/1707-9696_7-30977300.html
