  1. /me tries to decide whether we're being trolled or Donald Trump has discovered SL
  2. Bitsy was supposed to be a character. Then someone gave me hair that looked an awful lot like mine in RL and she's been an eternally youthful approximation of me ever since. This is no way stops me experimenting with clothing and costuming and other flights of fancy.
  3. Thinking of the people you encounter as if they were NPCs in your personal game is still treating then badly, no matter how polite you are in doing so. May I suggest a different mantra? Someone made a sign saying this: "The only real things in Second Life are our feelings, so please take care of each other." Care about the person, not their skin colour or their biological gender or the shape of their avatar. Who we are isn't in the externals.
  4. Suggestion for new category: Customer resorting to social media/reviews to vent frustration instead of having a nice cup of tea and trying again.
  5. Once again, you're arguing for inclusion in the RP section. The close connection between RP and combat comes as no surprise to many of us. Imagine that.
  6. Before the mesh bodies on offer now, mesh butts and boobs were all the rage. Some people couldn't slive without them and some of us thought nipples which could poke an eye out were a bit much. Tangos were one brand of mesh accountrements. Probably best to stay away from them. Besides being lethal, there were a raft of difficulties in making them work with clothing and, given how little they're talked about any more, there's probably little support for them. The jargon of all of this is an utter minefield. I can't imagine how confusing this must be for someone new or returning. Alwin's suggestions of new hair and going slow are good. Mesh bodies are the must-have fashion accessory of the moment, but there's no need to rush into it. Do what makes you happy and at your own speed. Welcome back.
  7. I don't know about you, but I like to keep the two sides of my coins together at all times. I suspect they'd no longer be legal tender if I separated them. In other words, if they're two sides of them same coin a single section is sufficient.
  8. Thanks for posting this (and Vanity too). I was thinking of giving it a try but will think again with those restrictions.
  9. the way Maddy uses one, most definitely. of note is her ability to set up a target.
  10. Am I allowed to watch this thread as a very strange soap opera? Just want to check on account of all the rules going about.
  11. How dare you enter into my RP that I'm broadcasting to everyone in the store!!! It's private. You can always use IM. No, we can't. We don't do that in our house. We only use local. We don't have anything to hide. Do you have something to hide? What are you hiding? How amusing I'm finding this.
  12. If the suit is fitmesh, its shape comes from your system shape (modifiable by the appearance sliders) and the suit itself. If it isn't fitmesh, its shape comes entirely from the suit itself. Either way, a mesh body will add nothing except cost and extra data which needs to be downloaded and rendered. Why add all that? Keep in mind too that the whole mesh head and body thing is relatively new. What's on offer for women's mesh bodies seems to have stabilised, though mostly because a very few brands so dominate the market no one else can get a look in. The Bento thing went live a few months ago, so there's been lots of activity around that. Offerings for men's mesh bodies are somewhere in between the two. Bottom line: if nothing that's on offer wows you right now, hold off until something does.
  13. Three observations on the uncanny vally effect - 1) The current mainstream trends are for a sort of "idealised" realism which can be very uncanny vally. That's one reason why I stay with my system body and head. Two, actually, because the mainstream ideals aren't mine. But anyway, everything I've seen suggests we're going through an especially uncanny period. 2) To minimise that for your avatar, look for consistency of things like colour saturation and detail in the textures of the component parts. It might be something like an enhanced photorealistic eye throwing the whole thing out of balance. It's realer than real, the skin isn't, and the combination feels off, but with a different set of eyes the skin is great. Or maybe it requires a different windlight setting to look its best. (Those that do are problematic for others of course.) 3) Part of it is what you're used to seeing. Brains are very talented at compensating in how they interpret the light coming in. I know that if I go from a mesh dress to a system shirt, I'll have a moment of thinking "eurgh, system really is dead" but then if I leave it on and log in to that later I'll like it again. In short, I think it's a combination of things, some of which you can influence, some of which you can get used to and some of which are just part of how things are going in SL these days. Lots of stuff to try out and experiment with until you find what's comfortable for you and makes you happy.
  14. Just to make sure, you do know about the Local Textures option for main grid testing, right? I don't mind paying the small fee for adding things to the database permanently.
  15. Both Builders Brewery and Helping Haven have boards with their upcoming class schedules near their landing points. Definitely worth checking out if you're into modding; they're good communities and very helpful. The DIY AO class I took was last spring or summer I think. I know I've seen it being offered since, but it's been a few months since I was at either place. Besides help and explanations, we also got a basic AO hud, scripts to run it and a collection of old freebie animations. The animations can easily be swapped out for other ones. It should be possible to repurpose a category of animation you don't use into a dance section on the basic AO hud. The graphic on the hud would say the wrong thing, but you could change that with a new texture or leave it be. Learning basic building skills opens up so much of SL's potential. It can be maddening, but it's also lots of fun.
  16. I took a short 'build your own" type class at either Helping Haven or Builders Brewery and put together one for my building alt. It was really helpful for understanding how an AO hud works in the first place, which then made customising easier. Sometimes I think gadget makers intentionally try to confuse us so we're more likely to think their expertise is the only solution. But they wouldn't do that, would they?
  17. What if this universal avatar was developed as an extension of the shared protocols necessary for the internet to work at all rather than as a visual web tracker from a corporate overlord?
  18. Here you go (from the Merriam-Webster dictionary website) It really does mean an avatar which can be used across multiple sites, not that everyone's avatar looks like everyone else's.
  19. Quoted for the first bit in bold because I think it's very apt and important. I would love love love some improvement in that to help balance all the shifts away from personally created content. The second bolded bit touches on a point which keeps coming up. Yes, the ideal time was years ago. That LL can't go back and change it doesn't mean they have to stay stuck forever.
  20. If you're going to be working with one person, then by all means take that person's preferences and workflow into account. You'll likely have a better working relationship, get better results and pick up some things which will help you in your own texture work too. Creating mesh for SL is all about balancing multiple compromises and reasonable solutions/balances for certain approaches may prove problematic for other ways of doing things. I see that often in trying to use patterned fabrics/textiles on FP mesh. So I could tell you what I'd like from mesh creators but that might not be what your texturers want themselves. Listen to them.
  21. In Object Mode, you can toggle between Flat and Smooth for the entire object. But in Edit Mode, you can select the faces you want flat (or smooth) and make them so. For an item with a lot of small curves and large flat areas, it might be easiest to make it all Smooth in Object Mode and then switch to Edit Mode to change the ones you want Flat. I'm not sure I've followed your description, but it might be a case where you need to add new faces - select the edges for each new face and hit F. (I think it's F, my fingers are smarter than my memory with this sort of thing )
