  1. For what it's worth, I grabbed chairs because I had useful examples readily to hand and they were easy to photograph from the same angle. The principles are still the same. If it had mattered for this, I would have taken the time to mount an archaeological expedition into my inventory for complicated mesh necklaces. @Kyrah Abattoir did a great job picking up with her shoe wireframes, info on types of modeling and what to look out for. Her post is worth reading carefully. Anyway, don't get caught up in how the item is categorised in your mind. Rigged wearables have some odd behaviours which result from being rigged, but triangles and mesh geometry are still triangles and mesh geometry - and that's why tools like wire frame are useful.
  2. I'm loving the cooperative work in this thread and wish I had an Impressed reaction for Aquila's work ?
  3. Have you been inworld to rez items you already own or do some exploring in wire frame? Getting some experience will help immeasurably. The hypothetical you've laid out is confusing but I think it comes down to wondering if all jewelers might be producing the same results. Texture size and number impacts display weight. That alone pretty much guarantees c), your scenario won't happen. There may be a glut of those who are using overly complex geometry (too many triangles in their mesh) and slathering the largest possible textures over every surface, but there will always be a few who are more sensible. This is true for chairs, jewelery, clothing, everything. re b) Density will vary between categories of items. Hair will probably be more dense than trousers when viewed at the same distance. That's ok because an excellent rule of thumb for creating is put the detail where it matters most. Jewelery tends to be on the heavy side, triangle-wise, for the amount of screen space it takes up. You can still cam in close to your jewels to see how they fare and how they compare to others. You can force changes of LOD from an intermediate camera position by changing your LOD graphics setting. I used to do this when I was wire-framing full perm mesh to assess quality before I bought it (or not), but I haven't used it to look at the fitmesh LOD problem. Worth investigating. Perhaps a way forward for something like jewelery would be asking creators what the display weights are for specific items. A group of you working together could build up a body of data to do some real comparisons with, from numbers provided by creators and from examining things you already own. Put that in a blog and it could be very useful for teaching other consumers and letting creators know that these things matter and some of their customers care. In writing all of this, I'm wondering if the overall solution isn't just to change the way jewelery is made for SL, but also the fashion approach to wearing it. I've seen people talk about how much they wear and I've seen sets sold with several intricate pieces. What if there was a trend towards a single statement piece with simpler companions, like a fabulous necklace with diamond stud earrings? Could Less is More ever catch on?
  4. Hmm, let me see what else I have in the back of the TARDIS. Any preferences?
  5. @Gabriele Graves Right. I'll do some of the work for you cause what I described really doesn't need the knowledge of a pro to check out. I was doing it ages before I started making my own. Here are two chairs (purchased full perm), seen in wire frame (ctrl-shift-R). The arm chair on the left does quite a lot for the triangle count. Can you see how the triangles are large and the whole thing is very see through, including the legs? The chair on the right isn't horrible, but the simple shape of it could be done with many fewer triangles. Can you see how there are more triangles in it with a higher density than the arm chair on the left? This is what you're looking for. Anyone can do it, no special knowledge required, just a viewer with wire frame capability. The cushion and top of the arms aren't as bad as they look from this angle, they're just like the rest of the piece. But notice how it doesn't happen with the chair on the left. Its cushion has a much lower number of triangles. You can find mesh which looks almost solid from every angle. That will be a monster to render. I don't have an example to hand but if you go investigating inworld you can probably find some. Click on the object to Edit and look for the small More info link. It will bring up the box on the left below. The numbers you're most interested in are Download and Display. Display here is a measure of the render weight, or how difficult something is to draw on the screen. Lower is more efficient. Texture size and number of textures will affect this significantly, so very similar pieces can have quite different display weights. You don't need to understand the details, just that lower means more efficient. So here are two simple tests anyone can do on any rezzed object to start to assess its efficiency. Lower display weight and less density of triangles. It's not difficult. Give it a go next time you're inworld and see for yourself. The more you explore, the more sense it will make.
  6. For rezzed items, Wire Frame view (ctrl shift R maybe and if i recall correctly the offical viewer doesn't have it) and Edit will let you check out the density of the triangles. Even if it's not the particular thing you want, a spate of Edit viewing or a wire frame tour can be useful to get a general feel for how poly conscious the store owner is. If this doesn't make sense, start examining various things next time you're inworld and you'll get a sense of how much it can vary and what sort of range you might expect for a type of object. Generally speaking, the more coloured in it appears in wire frame, the higher the poly density and the harder it will be to render. There's a tiny wee underlined More Info link in the Edit window too. It brings up another window with things like Download Weight. Sometimes that can help you get a better idea of what's going on with it. Better tools are needed, but these can help. Would it be worth it to you to start a conversation with the creator asking to see a copy or something? The rezzed LI can give an idea of how complex it is and that's easy enough for a creator to check out. If nothing else, it would let them know their customers care about how demanding things are to render.
  7. This is what trains are for. You may need to relocate temporarily to Europe though
  8. I guess if I came across someone complaining like that and they weren't interested in my suggestions, or an offer to go exploring or build something fun, I'd just shrug and move on. Their world, their imagination. My parcel mate has a fun rideable broomstick as a hunt prize though, so I'd probably try to get them to give it a go first.
  9. adds 'testing things to help worried people on the forums' to the long list of Very Good Reasons to have an alt. bring on the next anti-alt rant. i am ready!
  10. The Gandharan pieces never sold, except to a collector friend, so I felt I couldn't justify the prims or space when I had to relocate in August. A favourite Buddha is out back though. I can figure out a place to put some more if you would like to see them. Send me a friend request inworld if you like.
  11. There are limited quantity vendors inworld and I'm sure I've seen inworld auction systems. Relay for Life, I think, and also individual stores, though the latter was long ago. Would something like that constitute 'fun' for you? Then you could set it up however you wanted rather than hoping the Lindens got your preferences right in a new feature. Maybe you could find others to join you and make it a new 'thing'. I'd be surprised if they implemented it though, since most people do seem to prefer the unlimited method. I know I do.
  12. The Lindens aren't particularly involved with the forums. A few of them join in sometimes, but mostly it's residents helping residents and discussing things. If you take a glance through the rest of this section, you'll see that Linden involvement in this one is really just Alexa posting an occasional bit about new deploys or an upcoming web users group meeting. You didn't find a contact email for suggestions because there isn't one. The JIRA system is the official 'suggestion box'. Even when Lindens do read here, the advice for suggestions is generally 'open a JIRA'. It's a ticket type system, not a file. There are discussion threads in the archives about using the JIRA system. If you ask questions about that, may I suggest you be open to advice and much slower to attack when it's not presented in the way you're expecting? You're learning about something which is new to you after all. The town hall question thread kindly linked to above is another way to raise matters. This might be a more appropriate way to get your suggestion in front of Linden eyes at this time. MP does need a lot of work and several of its problems are discussed repeatedly by both consumers and merchants. Enough so that I'd be really surprised if they tried to implement your suggestion. They need to work on more fundamental matters first. Perhaps in time though.... From a technical point of view, understanding what sort of fashion you're into based on your purchase history isn't straight forward. You'll have better luck experimenting with different search strings in MP. Or joining inworld groups. Or finding SL fashion blogs and flickr feeds from those who share your preferences. Or are you wanting that instantaneous hit of buying more things immediately from your browser? And since the forums are for residents discussion things with other residents, my reaction to your suggestion is an emphatic 'do not want'. I'm really tired of that sort of thing following me across the internet and generally getting it wrong. I do hope that you're able to read the above as useful information. It's not an attack and I've taken the time to write it all out in hopes it might help. Either way, kind regards.
  13. Oh? I do tend to fail tests people set for me. I'm confused, but that's my usual state most days. Would you like some root beer?
  14. This is one of the reasons why my main is still system. I log into SL to talk to other people and see their creativity. Every moment spent fussing with my own appearance steals time from more interesting things. And the days I spent trying to find a mesh body which suited me....
  15. Use two browsers, one for each account and copy-paste for the item url. Works a treat.
  16. Value but don't trust? It's all a spectrum really, the extent to which any individual's opinions have proven reliable or not, or reliable in some areas but not others. I've known people who were smart and insightful but got off on using that in damaging ways. I'll give them credit where it's due and distance when it's necessary.
  17. Friends whose opinions I trust and value find me interesting, so for them at least, I am. That's all that really matters. ?
  18. alial Allen of Something Fishy and Fantasy China makes aquariums and great fish. She sells some FP. Prices are good and she's super nice. Worth asking her.
  19. Put a rotation script in it and call it a new type of lava lamp. It's a feature not a bug!
  20. There are at least two blogs which lists hunts (googling "SL hunts" should find both of them). If you want to try participating in a hunt or two as a creator, take a look at which ones are currently accepting applications. Depending on your genre, you might find more via related groups. Also, keep an eye out for posters advertising upcoming and current hunts at places you like to frequent. Unless things have changed dramatically in the last couple of years, there were always plenty to choose from. Take a look at the organiser's website or blog for the hunt to get an idea of how well it's run. If someone were to solicit me, that's straight where I'd head - an internet search on the hunt's name (or the hunt organisation, etc) to see how they were set up. Not that I'd be inclined to pay lindens to them but I would be dead curious what they were up to
  21. Didn't you say elsewhere that you like manipulating people into giving you things you want?
  22. I like mesh because it lets me make things that aren't possible with prims. I like prims because they are awesome. Sculpts, they have their uses but not much for what I want to do. Use the resources wisely and everyone benefits.
  23. That is a truly crappy way of requesting someone be less literal.
  24. MT Mimulus' 6 week classes on scripting (one series on the basics, one on specific subjects) were a huge help to me. I hope she's still doing them, I could use a refresher.
  25. This or dementia or both are the direction I'm headed. I'm not long past 50 and already battling increasing cognitive problems. Family history of strokes and TIAs too. As for support, my family is like that therapist who's speaking another language and I'm like you, trying to bridge the gap. Love all that is good about yourself Maddy, like your Mom does.
