  1. The hat in your picture would suit the classic slicked-back Spanish hair style with a chignon at the base of the neck. This style from Amacci comes close but might be too high (it's a hair base + 'attachment' for the chignon). https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Amacci-Hair-Attachment-Betty-Dark-Brown-Pack/3927349

+elua+ has a pony tail called Sheena which includes a hat version. It's my go to pirating and musketeering and hippying, though I'm not sure if it would be elegant enough for yours. I'll have a poke in inventory later to see if I can find anything else.

If you don't require mesh, sometimes sculpted hair can be modified (bits alphaed out, reangled or moved). It's fun when it works, the 'when it works part' being key.

edit: See Maddy's for an example of how to mod sculpted hair. We posted at the same time too. Great minds, eh? :D

It used to be that when you changed your password on Agni one was scheduled to get a refresh on Aditi. Not sure if it still works, or I am imagining.

That hasn't worked for a couple of years I think.

The current routine for accounts already established on Aditi goes something like this:

Log in to the beta grid.

    Wait for the nightly update.

Log in to the beta grid again - beta grid inventory should be synced with main grid, plus whatever you've  uploaded/created on beta grid.

This being SL, and it being Aditi, expect times when it goes wonky. But this sounds like more than their usual experiments. I agree with Bobby, a support ticket is probably needed. Good luck.

You've given me an idea, though. I need to stick it up on a hill or mountain and forget about it. Out of sight, out of mind. Except, you *did* say you think about it like .1111 percent of the time, right? And that scares me...

    .0001

Thinking about it .1111% would be forgetting about it 99.8889

That's an extra .1110% of brain power freed up for Blender-Edit-UV-GIMP-edit-uv-gimp-edit-uv-edit-uv-gimp-edit-uv-SL-ohbleepLoDs workflow. :SwingingFriends: I need every little bit.

  4. A friend told me that this sort of software works by comparing relative brightness values. If that's true, then windlight, shadows and the angle used could factor in. I wouldn't be surprised at all if those of us who spend a lot of time in SL are able to adjust better than the software, though it would be based primarily on what we're used to seeing. Maybe the vaunted smoothness of mesh bodies and faces reads as younger.

  5. I'm ticked with the killing things part of games too, Prok. Like why does a supposed 'city builder' or 'resource management' game need to become all about beating up on the creatures it's defined as the 'bad guys'? Don't like it at all.

My wriggly egg lives behind a cellar wall where I don't have to see it. If it hatches while I've forgotten it (which is 99.9999% of the time), the walls from the building above will hopefully keep it from wandering off. This long wait seems rather pointless though IMO.

The whole world needs more joy and love and co-operation. What's going on that so much of our 'entertainment' centers around depictions of violence or dissing strangers on the internet?

Hopefully this new game will be different and something I can manage. I'm too sick to build again and should probably just pack it in. If I do, I'll be looking for another reason to continue here.

Good luck with finding fun that suits you, Prok.

  6. People would buy proprietary mesh bodies because they liked them. How big does their share of the market need to be?

Do you truly think that no improvements should be made to the default avatar because it might take a cut of a few people's profits?

No. You need to learn only two things : how to use your meshbody HUD and how to use the texture layers.

Scratches head. I would have thought things like figuring out which body to invest in, and related things like TMP isn't supported, Bento isn't a brand, Omega is a brand (sort of) but isn't a body, that it's perfectly fine to not wear a mesh body, which ones include feet, which don't, what alpha cuts and alpha layers are, and a whole host of other stuff, were also things new users need to learn, and some of them are really important before they buy. But if you're really certain none of that is needed....

  8. The amount of information currently required to be an adequately informed consumer is really quite daunting. There's a ton of jargon to be learned, along with concepts like stuff that was made before a certain divergence won't necessarily be labeled with certain jargon because it didn't matter when it was made.

So imagine you've wandered into this thing called Second Life, aren't really sure what it's about or whether it's something you want to do. And now you're faced with a mountain of information you don't really understand and a thousand differing opinions, including some truly nasty ones denigrating classic avs and their users. Forum regulars will have seen a few gems here.

How inclined might you be to proceed along the steep learning curve for something that's supposed to be fun and entertaining?

I'm all for seeing the best in people and helping them develop their skills, but I think the expectations of many here are asking a bit much of people who are just starting or returning.

  10. Are you guys arguing in favour of keeping the out-dated default avatar for the sake of making the SL learning curve harder for new people? Cause that's what it looks like to me.

Improve the default avatar. Bring it more into line with today's screen resolutions and expectations. Give it Bento. Everyone benefits. And those who want to can still buy into a proprietary mesh body. It's not like that's going to go away. But maybe new users will feel less pressure to make those sorts of choices while they're still learning how to get around.

  11. I've seen several people write articulate arguments for an improved default avatar. It makes so much sense to do so these days. IMO the strongest argument is how complicated it is for someone new and how they face a big - and a lot of lindens - choice about which type of body & clothes they're going to invest in almost immediately. An improved default avatar would encourage more creators to make clothing and shoes for that (try being a noob female avatar without mesh feet), so new players could buy some clothes and wait till they get more of a grasp of SL before deciding whether or not to splurge on a proprietary body.

About the only argument against an improved default avatar is 'breaking existing content'. There has to be a way to code in a choice so people could use the current default avatar if they really need to.

  12. When I was noob, I just played around with free stuff until I got an idea of what to look for and how to tell if something was likely to be poorly made. This was before mesh clothing and not much had demos. It was a good approach for me. I learned a lot, went through several different 'me's and had a great time. Then when I had some money I was able to make good decisions for myself. I also had a pile of stores whose stuff I knew I liked.

Today, I'd suggest a trip to the Free Dove for some basics, and joining groups like FabFree and SL Frees & Offers and some of the other umbrella marketing groups. (Are any of the genre-specific ones still going?) Keep an eye out for interesting group gifts (sometimes the store group, sometimes one or more of the umbrella marketing groups) and MM boards (Midnight Mania - board has a prize and numbers, first number is how many have hit the board/second number is the target; if the target is met, everyone who hit it gets the prize, usually at SLT midnight) and free join days for things like skin groups which can be expensive. (See if 7 Deadly S[k]ins is currently free to join, or maybe something like 10 L$. Good skins, lots of gifts. Tending more towards mesh heads/bodies these days but still some system.) Themed hunts can be good too, there's a Steam hunt in March, Rag Dollz used to have a dark steampunk in the autumn IRCC, and the legendary Twisted Hunt might be coming up soon (like September). That might be a good one given your tastes, though it's always been one of the hardest. United InschCon and friends run a Medieval/Fantasy hunt 3 or 4 times a year. Silvan Moon (now distinct from The White Armory) has a fantasy gown out as a group gift. For years that used to change every weekend, now it's less regular. The store is worth a look around IMO.

Mesh clothing covers a mesh body, so if you're inclined to wear things like steampunk there might not be enough of a mesh body visible to be truly worth the fuss and cost. Lots of us are still running around quite happily in system/classic avatars too. When clothing comes with versions sized specifically for mesh bodies, I just tuck those away in case I ever get one.

Have you learned how to use the Avatar Complexity rank information yet? I'm not sure where it is in the standard viewer but you should be able to find the information via web or forum search. Or someone else here can help you. It's not perfect but it's a reasonable indication of quality. The higher the number, the harder it is for computers to render. A well made piece will usually have a lower complexity number than a poorly made one.

OK, that's enough for one day. Good luck. And don't feel like you need to get it all sorted out right away. You have your entire SL ahead of you. :D

  13. Is your group a group-slot one or through a subscriber? Competition for group slots is fierce and many people won't be keen to give up one for a wee store. You'll stand a better chance with a subscriber but it does take time. And it not being summer. July and August are notoriously flaky times for sales in SL. Things usually pick up again in September though.

As for the sales groups, join a few that seem likely candidates and get a feel for them from the customer's side. Take a look at things like how active the group chat is, how many members there are, how many members have logged in recently (if you can see that info, it's hidden for larger groups), how many notices are sent out and if you find yourself ignoring them because there are just too many. Look into the rules for merchants too. Hopefully you'll find one that feels like it's a good fit for you.

Is your inworld shop near other stores which will draw the right sort of traffic for what you're offering? I've seen places where complimentary stores join together - something like that might suit you, especially while you're starting out. There was a home decor one active in the Advents last December but I don't recall the name.

It takes time. Keep growing your body of work and develping your skills and keep experimenting with marketing till you find the ways that work for you. Good luck.

  14. From the bits someone else quoted it sounds like the tactics romance scammers use to persuade people to give them RL money.... Convince someone that it's love and romance, feign jealousy, persuade them to send money or buy things. Not good, but at least this was 'just' lindens and not thousands of RL dollars or pounds. Anyway, something for everyone to be aware of to help keep themselves and their friends safe.

Also struck by the use of the word make in the title - how to make someone leave SL...., followed on by how the target of her ire made her believe something. It's persuasion and choices, all around. Given her declaration of nobly fighting this battle herself, my question to her would be how far she intends to go in her attempts to try to run the other person out of SL and, more importantly, to consider what that says about her own character. I hope these things occur to her after the outrage dies down.

  15. In the Edit window, look at the box where the sculpt map would go. If it's blank/not there and it doesn't say sculpt or give a prim shape, it's mesh.

Some people sell mesh components that can be used to build with - texturing mesh will largely be easier but otherwise it should be similar enough to old school prim/sculpt building. Some people sell mesh that's a whole piece to be textured. Some people sell textured mesh to use in your builds. Etc.

Big thing to watch out for with sculpts and tortured prims is LI (land impact, the new 'prim' measurement for land). Doing much of anything (like adding scripts or linking to mesh) can skyrocket the LI ('prim equivalency') for sculpts and tortured prims. Just something to watch out for, especially if the parcel you're building on is running out of prims/LI.

The Builders Brewery group is still going strong. Helping Haven is good for classes too. Worth checking out what both places have on offer. Good luck and welcome back. :)

  16. We got mesh about five or so years ago I think. Whatever I try to write will be corrected so I'll just leave it to the experts here.

If you've been inworld in the last few years, much of what you might reasonably have assumed was sculpted was mesh. In my opinion, it's worth the effort needed to get to grips with a 3d software program like Blender.

  17. Don't know if it would suit you, but there's one in a shop across from mine at an event which starts tomorrow. I don't remember the store name, just noticed it an hour ago while I was finishing up there and thought I might try a demo with my building alt. (Yeah, the one who isn't supposed to spend money 9_9)

The event is called California Dreaming, runs 5th-20th August. Long way, wander down from the landing point. Turn left after the gachas building and it will be on the right side. Short way, grab a TP from the first pick in my profile. That goes to my shop at the event (and is largely there for my convenience, but hey you're welcome to use it too :)). The store with the hair is directly across the street. Hopefully there's more throughout the sim.

I just placed 4 of them. stretched out. Meh.

Sounds like you've stumbled into a really important aspect of mesh - changing size can change the LI (land impact = 'number of prims'). It involves things like the geometry of the item and choices the creator made while uploading the mesh into SL.

In the edit box, look for the LI number of a newly rezzed wall. Then stretch your wall out and check again. If there's a big difference between the two, try building your wall by linking unstretched sections. Or there might be a compromise between the two - try stretching the wall section to see where the spike in LI occurs.

Did you link anything else to it? Scripts, sculpts and tortured prims can make LI jump.

About rezzing speed - sources I trust say that prims are standardised, which means less information to be sent to your computer, and (the untortured ones at least) tend to rez sooner than mesh. That fits with my experience, especially when my internet is playing up and everything is slower.

But mesh doesn't necessarily cause lag after that. If things disappear or go blurry, it could be a graphics card matter where the graphics memory fills up, dumps some stuff and then has to download the information again. The cause of that could be some combination of complicated mesh, lots of large textures, a long draw distance, or the sheer quantity of items in the area. Lowering draw distance is usually a quick way to help with that.
