It's a put-down. It accomplishes what put-downs are supposed to accomplish, I guess: it scores points.

I entirely agree that it doesn't "accomplish" anything very useful. It certainly doesn't contribute to understanding.

BUT, as an index, an outward sign, of the frustration that the young sometimes feel at being dismissed as avocado-toast-eating do-nothing whiners, I think we would do well to pay attention to it. It's a symptom of a bigger problem, perhaps?

Scylla, with all respect, that wasn't a request for you to elucidate your position further. I understood you and in my mind at least was acknowledging that you don't have the answers I'm looking for because you're not one who thinks it's accomplishing something.

I'm running out of spoons here (used to replying during the quiet hours while the Americans are still in bed :) ), so let's just say I'm not writing clearly and leave it at that. Thank you for trying to help.

Actually the minimum size is not set by the side bar at all, its set by your monitor size and resolution and zoom level. On larger monitors that side bar information takes up less space per inch viewed if the user has changed the zoom level or resolution. Not everyone keeps their view at 100, some go larger some go smaller. And it depends upon what you have your mouse scroll settings at. Some scroll more per roll of the mouse some scroll less, meaning more or less time to scroll by content.

Yeah, I know about changing zoom level. Use it frequently myself :D

Sorry, got turned around by your insistence on changing topic and didn't word it correctly myself. Oops :D I did ask what the minimum size of a post was on your screen so we could use your numbers after you dismissed mine. Anyway, my rough calculation on an example page with a relatively small number of reactions per post was that it would double the amount of material to be scrolled through (without adding much, if any, significant content) regardless of screen size, resolution, etc.

I'd rather not have to do that, whether I'm on my desktop (I think that's about 21") or the laptop. It's fine if you don't care for yourself. Any chance you might care about others in this? Or is your experience the only one that matters to you?

I'm in no way advocating it as a useful strategy for engagement. I think the only time I've used it here was in a joking context.

Perhaps someone else who uses it or one of the others will have answers for some of my questions. I am genuinely flummoxed by those who think it's accomplishing something positive.

Bitsy, haven't you been paying attention?  Redefinition is all the rage, because so many people would rather muddle debates or stifle dissent by turning the language on its head and resort to emotionalism, rather than debate honestly.  This is merely a use of it to end any discussion at all.

Turning it on its head and resorting to emotionalism rather than honest debate is a fair description of what you've just done Tolya :D

There is a change in size of both. If you have a wider screen you can see more per inch, the post is changed in how it appears on a larger screen. It doesn't end the end of the line at the same place.  Meaning what once took 2-3 lines for some people to read on a smaller screen, takes less for someone on a larger screen. plus it does matter at what resolution you screen displays as to how much can be seen per inch both width and height wise. It is not the same on all monitors.  So yes there would be a difference in total screen content that has to be scrolled over by different individuals.

You remarked before that you read quickly. Could you perhaps be reading a bit too quickly and it's getting in the way of comprehension?

The minimum post size is set by the name, title, avatar, post count info on the left of the post. It's the same regardless of your screen size. The comparison was between the efficiency of reaction buttons, which condense a lot of response into a very small area, and what the minimum size would be if they were all conveyed as posts per your preference.

Sorry, but your lecture's been wasted as it's on something else 🤷‍♀️

8.5 tall or 8.5 corner to corner as most displays would be measured. if its only 8.5 corner to corner. that 'is' a really small monitor even for a laptop. My 9 year old laptop is 15'' corner to corner. if yours is only 8.5 corner to corner thats not a laptop but a netbook/notebook pc.

My desktop is a  4:3 display. or about 14" tall. which would be nearly double in height just about. meaning a lot more retail space for reading web pages even at 100% zoom.

Oh pardon me for my faux pas :D:D My laptop screen is 8.5 inches tall, which is what matters to me on how much of a forum page I can see. Width and diagonal don't, because I find it harder to read when the width of the text area goes over 9 inches.

But screen height, or width, or diagonal measurement really doesn't change how much extra material we'd all have to scroll through if you had your way. The minimum post size here is fixed by the identifying information at the side, not how much retail space is on your screen.

It's been fascinating to get this glimpse into how your mind works, but I think this has run its course. All the best :)

Molly is dead-on here. "Ok Boomer" was, originally at least, almost always used as a response to someone from that generation acting in a condescending manner to someone younger. It's not, or was not in its inception, as Molly says, an attack on all Boomers: it's a response to a particular kind of behaviour.

I don't know if that's changed at all . . . but my basic advice to any Boomer: if you don't want to hear this directed at you, stop being insulting, condescending, and dismissive to "Millennials" or others younger than yourself. Treat them with the respect they merit, and I'm fairly confident you won't find this flung back in your face.

Maybe you can help me on this question I'm struggling to understand: What's the point of the interaction supposed to be?

If it's to change attitudes, why use language which requires the recipient to understand this non-obvious redefinition of a word that already has a meaning? Do those who use this honestly think they're changing minds with it?

If it's to change behaviour without changing attitude, that's just a form of intimidation, or shouting over someone, bullying even. Which is one way of ending an argument and feeling like you've won. Is that the goal? Unfortunately bullying and intimidation become self-perpetuating cycles because they often do succeed in silencing the target.

Is it to nuture the sense of being in the know,  an insider taking a chunk out of a foolish, unknowledgeable outsider?

It certainly works for putting someone down. The dismissive, "you're not even worth talking to" tone shines through loud and clear, whether it's intended or not. And what of passersby who were born in that generation but haven't followed the whole exchange and just see the put down? That kind of thing can wear on a person, even if they're in the know enough to go through the mental process of seeing it as referring to someone else. We understand this with every day sexism and how word choice can demean and dismiss women. Why is it excused here?

I fail to see how redefining a word connected with an intrinsic identity (you can't change when you were born) to an insider meaning isn't problematic.

As for your advice, it doesn't work. Disagreeing, having a different point of view is enough to be dismissed with whatever terse put down someone's inclined to throw. In the end, it doesn't matter whether it's "deserved" or not, it will be used by those who'd rather assume you're wrong than consider a different point of view.

So as tidy as the redefinition sounds, I think it's quite a damaging mode of discourse.

Making avatars visible has a lot of implications. They need to first implement the SL skeleton, rigging data, attachments, animations, and a whole bunch of other things.

I like this as an approach very much. I don't need to see my av for a lot of what I do inworld, so it's a good compromise in my book.

I dont have any problems scrolling by or skimming through what others say to see if it was worthwhile. The time it takes to do so is inconsequential to me. But then again I read fairly fast so it doesn't take time to read even the longest of replies here.

Plus I use a desktop computer where as I can see a lot more per inch. So is not the same for me. You must have a pretty small screen on your laptop to only be able to view so little. Even on my older laptop I could still see more than that.

It's 8.5 inches, not small. We can do the calculations by the minimum post size on your screen if you fancy. It will still be a doubling of thread lengths for no extra content.

What I'm really struck by in this whole conversation is how your experience is the only thing that matters to you, and if someone has a different point of view or way of doing things, then there's assumption and judgement. You've done it with vanity threads, reputation points, why people react, my screen size, your reading speed.

That's getting in the way of your understanding the points I'm trying to make. We don't have to agree, but it would be nice to be understood at least. Any chance of that?

  10. 19 hours ago, Drakonadrgora Darkfold said:

Then if it matters so little the why doesnt LL just remove the reputation system all together and just have the reactions be reactions with no reputation points for them. Simple because there are some very vain people on these forums even if some members do not want to admit to it or accept it and LL panders to them to keep them happy, to keep them here.

Vanity/reputation systems should not be pandered too in any community, it doesnt help the community grow or stay together, in the end it just cause more problems than good.

Put in a request then, if it matters this much to you and you sincerely believe all this about pandering. As for the community staying together, the forums have been going in one form or another for a very long time. The community here is pretty solid. Given the evidence of my own experience, having read and participated on and off for close to a decade now, I'm not at all convinced by your assertions.

There's a quicker and easier way to sort the problem though, just stop giving strangers on the internet this much influence over your emotions. People are going to people, and sometimes that will include things we don't care for. You can let it upset you, or not. It's just a number under a picture under a name.

likes can be pointless and added for meaningless reasons, responses actually show some thought and time was taken to write them usually compared to just clicking a button. But I guess that is too much for some people to do, they just want an easy lazy way to respond to what someone said.

It would be better, for people to think and respond to why they liked what was said about the post, it gives more depth of meaning at that point then a like/hug ever can.

As toward taking up space.. guess people are just to lazy to read an extra reply and want things kept simple and easy to read. It takes less than a moment to read a response or scroll on by it and ignore it. There is no limit to the size of thread or how many replies it can have.

It's not about reading or scrolling past a single response. It's about having to do that for multiple posts for every post of content. The format here looks to be a minimum of 2 inches per post at 100% magnification on my laptop screen. In the interest of talking facts, I did a quick count and it looks like 47 likes on this page so far. If each of them were communicated via separate posts, at the minimum spacing, that would be an additional 94 inches of reactions to scroll through for this page alone. And 94 divided by 12 is... 7.8 feet.

Are you telling me you'd be happy to skim and scroll through an additional 7.8 feet of material?

It's not being lazy to use a reaction button. It's giving some feedback while still keeping the forums readable. The option to write more is always available and often used. Have you not noticed that?

But, what's confusing is the above is not true.  Vendors, tipjars, all kinds of things take our lindens without asking first.  Therefore, it does seem to have a disconnect somewhere and/or a gap is filled somehow.  Perhaps that main gap is CasperVend and it's system with a transaction number, etc....but it never asks if it can take money from me.

Oh well, it seems LL has written themselves into a forever box they cannot get out of.  The only thing that saved LL from it's forever box is CasperVend then.

    No. No. No.

A vendor in a store doesn't TAKE customers' lindens. Customers perform an action which GIVES a designated amount of lindens through the pay box.

Debit permissions are a different beast.

You've gotten yourself into a forever box of your own making by not understanding this distinction.

Bitsy, you make a sold point that it can be about community. Adding it would be ok I guess as long as it does not contribute to reputation like some of the other emoticons that dont.

Does it really matter what someone has by way of reputation points though? There was discussion of that awhile back and the majority of regulars said they weren't fussed about reputation points. And it does seem we're a small enough community here that we know and react to each other.

All of the replies have been helpful but this here made me realize what it is I needed to do to make both dimensions match. Was as simple as looking for the polys that extend furthest and matching those as best as I could to the high poly model and then copying the dimension values so it was exact. Needed a little more wiggling after that but then it was perfect.

Thank you everyone! Was much less painful than I was anticipating. :P

I'm so pleased to hear this ❤️

My other trick is to save and export frequently while I'm removing bits in Blender, with the number of tris included in each name. When I go to the beta grid to test, I try different combinations in the uploader to see how it affects LI and upload the most promising. Then I zoom in and out on different graphics settings to get a feel for how the LoDs shift. If the initial upload(s) do unsightly things, or could just be better, I have a pile of other daes ready to try instead. (And if I have to back track to try a different route, I have a range of very useful mid-point files to start from.)

This works better for me than trying to plan ahead for the middle two, and anything which makes this process less stressful is a big plus :). I'm just saving and exporting as I work my way down to the lowest. This approach has also taught me a lot as it makes it simple to experiment, looking for a good balance between efficiency, detail, and preserving visual continuity. Sometimes bits which I think matter turn out not to and can be safely gotten rid of, or doing something slightly differently makes the LoD sequence flow much more smoothly. Important to remember to keep track of which files I've used, so my beta grid tests will generally include strings of numbers (the tri counts) in their object names. When I decide a final combination, those go in one subfolder labeled "Used" and the rest in "Unused" as it does get messy otherwise 😬

For all I know this might be common practice and I've just never heard anyone else mention it. Or maybe they all have better ways. All that matters in the end though is that you find a workflow which suits you.

Good luck with your mesh. It can be unbelievably frustrating, but it's also very rewarding.

What's the point of the fashion section if you're not supposed to talk about a fashion accessory/clothes...?

Someone has to make the things you wear, and the Creation Forum is the part of the boards for questions and discussion about different types of creating. Is that a sufficient point?

    5 hours ago, LilithServil said:

There are multiple other threads here with people asking for or about clothing. I really don't see the issue here...?

It's been taken over by consumers though, which makes it harder for creators to use it effectively. Probably should just be moved to the People Section now.

But putting it there could be why your original post didn't get any answers.

As for answers, I'm curious why you ignored the one you did get and went after Alwin instead. Did I just not tell you what you wanted to hear?

  15. Before I start reductions, I make a mental note of what in the mesh is defining the edges of the bounding box. If the geometry isn't basic enough that measurements will suffice, then as I proceed with the reductions I make sure to keep at least a tri/vertex on each of those edges. What's done with the edge-defining tris/vertices depends on the piece. But the key is using the starting geometry rather than trying to figure out where to put something new.

Jeez still nothing? I'm kind of shocked this kind of clothing isn't more common.

Sorry but the forum doesn't have all the answers. It's just a fraction of SL's residents and a couple of trolls. It can be easy for a post to drop off the radar too, this is the first I've seen it. I don't wear Maitreya so I can't give you specifics as you desire, but since you're frustrated I'll offer what thoughts I can.

Have you looked for sashed trousers? Mesh clothes often clip, so it's just harder to mix and match than it was in the days of system and sculpts. Separate sashes and belts made more sense then. If close fitting trousers are acceptable to you, then system/applier/BOM trousers tucked into boots are one way. If you need them loose fitting, then you're limited to either luck or what someone's designed to work together.

Rigging limits options further because they can't be adjusted. Unrigged has different problems of course, but unless the pieces are designed to work together some compromise will be needed.

There's been a decrease in the variety of what's on offer. The time and skill it takes to create, size, rig, weigh and texture mesh is a big factor in that. Some genres just aren't represented any more, or an outfit here and there, usually hidden in an obscure corner of a store.

Might you have the time and inclination to learn how to make what you fancy yourself? Underserved niches only become served because someone cares enough to take the time to do it.

I think people are a little bit to obsessed with reaction icons at times. If you want to give a hug, you can use the emote in a response to what they said just as easy. No real need for another reaction emoticon to be added to the forums.

It may be easy enough to post an emote but when enough of those come through, it makes a thread unwieldy and can also interrupt the flow of conversation. The reaction icons help keep a thread tidier.

They also contribute to a sense of community. Sometimes it's good to see that in one place, a sort of internet approximation of sitting around with a group of friends in real life and hearing everyone's reactions to what's been said.

I don't think most of the people asking for a hug emoticon are obsessed with them. Maybe a few in the vanity threads I suppose. But this thread is very much about community. The reaction icons are just part of that.

If I don't bake a part of my mesh creation, won't that prevent me from texturing it?  And, I do appreciate your comments, even if I have to admit I don't fully understand them.

It's unwrapping, not baking, which is needed to make a mesh textureable inworld. Baking turns all of the appearance bits (like colours, shadows, lighting, etc) in Blender into a 2d texture useable outside of Blender.

The UV images you're saving are useful for alignment and placing if you prefer to make your textures outside of Blender in software like Photoshop or GIMP. It doesn't sound like you're doing that, but it is another option. I prefer it as it gives me more control for fine-tuning. Which approach is best depends in part on what it is you're making.

Texture repeats is just changing the number of times a texture shows on a prim or mesh. The default is 1 but can be changed to anything. Practice with a rezzed prim inworld if you haven't (Edit, Textures tab, Repeats Horizontal and Vertical). They can be very useful and greatly reduce the amount of texture memory needed.

It's all confusing and there's a lot of jargon to keep straight. Ask questions and we'll do our best to help clarify things.

Is there a reason why alpha-ing the butt won't work with your choice of clothing?

If it's because you're wanting to wear something very revealing in that area, are you wearing clothing designed for your particular body or for another one? And if all of that, have you tried other clothing brands? Not every mesh creator is equally skilled at rigging and weighting.

I can't think of any other reason why alpha-ing out the butt wouldn't work, but perhaps there is one.

The inventory section is a complete mess. For example, you have to pick your clothes pretty much blindfolded from the category. It'd be nice to have a neat wardrobe closet where you could see what you have and choose easily. And most of the time the inventories you've purchased wont work/open.

Very little has changed in the inventory section. The same root folders, plus whatever a resident adds. There's a new-ish Received Items folder which things from Marketplace go into so they're easy to find.

The Catznip viewer will show the photo/texture in any folder when you hover over it. I find it a it a big help. If other viewers aren't doing this, perhaps switching to Catznip will help you too.

If you've purchased some sort of inventory organiser/"closet" system, it will be from a third party (not LL). Some of those are dependent on external servers run by the creator to work. It's possible that the one you're using has stopped functioning. It's also possible that the server has been moved and the inworld asset which accesses it needs to be updated. Have you contacted the creator to ask?

Even if your closet system is defunct, all of your items will still be in your inventory. Just as you left them in 2012.
