  1. Each sim resides on 1 core of a  server micro-processor  card  located at Linden labs  facility. Probably about  4 to 8 sims  on each server micro-processor card.  Perhaps 16 homestead  sims on 1 server microprocessor card. You said you already know details of how SSB works  so i wont say more.

  2. Hi Lydia :)

Can you give some details of these issues  you are experiencing in the last couple of weeks?  For Example...Are you having slow rez , slow or failed teleports, or  chart lag  on a private islands  or on a Mainland region?  or both?  What type of sim  servers  main/agni.....magnum...blue steel ?  If you can tell me the exact names of some of these regions you are using........I will be happy to run some test myself in those regions.

Also can you tell me what  country  you are logging in from   as there have  been some issues with transalantic connections during some hours.

In the  sims  where you see these issues....what does the  statistics window show for  total script times and total spare script times?

Are these  sims  empty of other Avatars?   or   have a only a few avatars?  or  perhaps have  more than 10 avatars?

What is  your FPS , view  distance setting .  graphics mode  you typically use.  FPS  as I am sure you know is very dependent on the direction you are viewing...i.e    High fps if  looking at  Ocean only  or looking at a  very sparsely textured region. and  much lower FPS if  looking towards a complex highly textured scene.

Its a lot easier to get support from the Lindens  if  we can prove  that  many residents are experiencing  the  same exact problems that you are....so i will be more than happy  to add my support if in fact i can observe  some of the same issues your are experiencing in those same regions.

  3. Lydia,

I am in SL every day of the week for several hours...scripting, building, flying, boating, auto racing . Usually after 9PM PST time. I have not experienced any of the issues that you  are currently reporting.  I am estate manager of 2 private islands  and also own 1/2 of a mainland sim. I use ultra mode and view distance of 256 meters. I7 pc and nvidia gt 550TI graphics. Viewer = cool viewer for last 6 years

I am however located in the USA........perhaps  you are located out of the usa?   I have  noticed lots of post in the forums lately  about  bottlenecks on internet lines to second life  causing  excessive ping times during certain hours  (above.net  was mentioned as the trouble spot).

Another resident that I know  uses the same 2 private island sims and   does have a lots of   viewer crashing problems especially on sim crossings.  We think  that  residents problem to be caused by  excessive Inventory size (70,000 + items).

Because, if that resident uses and alternate Avatar  with  very low inventory count on the same PC/ viewer  all viewer crashing problems are gone.  we did this same test with several different viewers. (both avatars have same attachments and very low script time.  (0.035 ms total)  Also note this resident is in Europe .... so  much longer ping times involved.

I personally have 28,000  inventory items myself and dont have any issues with sim crossings.

Dont get me wrong...  SL  does have lots of  technical problems  with viewers and server updates that are un-ending  :(

I am just saying that I personally  have not experenced any new serious problems in the last few weeks.

  4. Hi again Qie,

Thanks for your information...as I was not aware of  network issues with KFM.  Can you elaborate a bit  on those effects please?    Also you mentioned  removing the KFM script  did not stop the object from continuing to  take network time  or at least that was my  understanding of what you wrote.  Help me understand that  if you have time. Thanks :)

The reason i was asking is  I have a submarine target that uses KFM  when it gets hit with a bullet or torpedo  which turns on the KFM  to dive the submarine  and later re-surfacein a new location.   Then the KFM is stopped until the next time the submarine is hit.  Are you saying that  there is network time being used  even when this  submarine object is not actually  doing KFM?   Thanks for any thoughts you have on this....

  5. Qie,

Gwyneth's old post/blog  actually  had a lot of useful information if only she had left out the ARC  nazi rants and the  Jewish family dinner stories it would have been even better :)

    general comment:

Also wanted to mention that the idea that excessive or poorly  written scripts dont cause lag is relative to what your activity in SL happens to be.

(i.e.  the idea that  scripts only slow down  script execution and dont actually cause lag is what i am refering too)

If your activity is racing cars or doing air to air combat  for example....the slowing down of script execution is going to be perceived as  lag.

  6. Here is a test  you can do...that may help to analyze this issue and some simple advice.

Before doing a Live performance,  visit that region /sim  where the performance will be done and  open the VIEW, Statistics window  and  scroll  down to the  section called  "Time"  and click on TIME   to open Time details.  look for 2 parameters called  "Script time" and "Spare time" .

If the sim/region has more than 10 ms of Script Time  and less than 10 ms of Spare time.....you can be certain that if you bring 30 Avatars to this region during the performance...it will be very laggy.

Ideally  you want to do  your performances in in a region with low Script Time  and lots of Spare Time.

Regions with very high texture texture counts will also  "seem " more laggy  to many of the  30 avatars.

And of course  it all depends on  how many active scripts each of those 30 avatars is wearing as this further degrades sim performance.

Also watch out for regions using / rezzing lots of Temporary objects,( another source of  apparent lag).

Sometimes  we forget  to take all these factors into consideration .

I welcome any other thoughts or opinions.........These are just my personal observations as Estate manager of  3 sims.

  7. FYI Maestro....

It is common practice to set combat rockets  and missiles as temporary objects so they will expire after 60 seconds in order to prevent any clutter  from these objects.

I have noticed that on the main Sim servers (agni) of 2 adjecent private islands......that the rockets and missiles are not expiring at the end of 60 seconds when  the rocket or missile tries to exit the SIMs into a non sim region(i.e "ocean side").  The rocket or missile  gets stuck on the  sim boundry   and remains visible only to the OWNER of the object for as long as the  owner is logged on.

If the owner attempts to edit the stuck object.....it dissapears.   Or if the Owner re-logs  all are gone.

Only the object owner can see the  stuck object, see any particles emitted, and hear any sounds being emitted.

I did the same experiment /test  on a mainland  sim  (magnum)...and  rockets and missiles just  go off the Sim boundry and disapear at the boundry  of a non-sim region(i.e. ocean side).

I did try reseting the region  but behavior was the same after the reset.

3 other  residents have experienced same behavior in these same 2 regions.

If you have experienced any such behavior  please leave a reply so we can understand the extent of this problem

    Thanks  :)

  9. I have noticed that when the Lindens do the server version change,  that  it can cause a "change(CHANGED_OWNER)   event to execute.  In my script this event  is set to cause a script reset. So...is  it possible that  you have  something similar in your script?  just a thought....

  10. Are you sure  the new Win 7 did not overwrite/change your  graphics video drivers?  The 8500  card is pretty old.

make sure you either  use original video drivers that came with  card  or download updated ones from Nvidia website.

    good luck....

Edit...sorry i missed the part about radgast viewer does work correctly. You could also try Cool View  viewer.

  11. This is generaly called a "health meter".  which shows floating text above your avatars head to  indicate various combat related data and  health %.  The important thing to understand is that these devices are part of a particular combat system and there are many such systems in SL for combat. For  example: if you buy a combat capable sword...it will come with one of these health meters when you wear  the sword. The note card included will tell you what type of combat systems it is compatible. Two swords of the same type will always work together correctly  but sometimes  they are also compatible  with another creators swords if it happens to use the same combat system. Another  good example is the VICE combat system  as it is very popular in SL and works with all kinds of weapons, infrantry, airplanes ,Tanks, etc.

There is also a free Vice combat  kit  that includes scripts and sample weapons,

So just go to the market place and  look  for  a combat capable weapon........have fun :)

  12. The obvious test to do...is to shut down all of those other applications  that you have running in the background to see if  you lag problem goes away.  Also reset pc and router if you have not already done so. Dont use wireless unless   cable connection is not an option.   Be sure to check that any anti-virius programs are not slowing you down also.

If no help,,,i suggest you copy and paste your PC specs and video card specs here in the forums.

This info can be seen in viewer under  "Help.......about"

  13. Linden Labs please take notice!

There are now many reports of "large gray box " attaching to  a moving vehicle (boat, plane,or car).

It becomes linked to the vehicle directly in front of the avatar pilot location.  "Inspecting" the linked object show that the creator of the object is the Pilot/owner name , the name of the object is the Pilot/owner  avatar name. This seems to happen upon sim crossing entry. It is happening in at least several different sims.

I  do suspect that this is some variation of the JIRA VWR-13338 explotation of  the bug in permissions scripts.

Pease post here if you have also experienced this attack in the last few days.

  14. I disagree...new problems do occur all the time. Usually side effects from new bells and whistles or as a result of never ending weekly server software changes where all the over -paying sim Owners have become free beta software testers.

I hope you are mistaken about Linden staff NOT reviewing the Technology forum post daily or weekly as it would in my opinion be totally irresponsible not to do so.

The creator of this thread is not a newbie to SL as you can see from the number of past post. So refering this resident to the Knowledge Base is a bit misplaced advice in my opinion. I am sure you we thinking of other newer residents who might also read this thread.

I might add that if the resident is having poor connection problems to SL servers......of course SIM crosings will be terrible.

Having said all this  I do want to compliment you on your wonderful website Things & Stuff Blog as I find it very helpful many times.

  15. That slim line PC only has a 220 watt power supply.  the original installed  video card was a nvidia Gforce 210 or  intel motherboard graphics.  You may have only on board or may have both.

This PC is  not very suitable  for present day SL requiriments......will only  work in lower graphic settings.

To up grade requires a new nvidia card  and a bigger power supply of 400 or 500 watts  which may be hard to find in a slimline size. Nvidia 550Ti  is a good choice IF...it will fit inside your PC and you can find a 400+ watt power supply to fit.

  16. Go to a different sim..........clear your cache.........then relog.... into   that new sim that you went to  by chosing  " log into last location".  This will force reload  of your avatar from the main Linden servers.  It may take a minute or so to see your Avatar  the first time  as  your cache is reloading.

To play it safe , Dont relog into a Magnum type server  as they are using server side appearance...at least not untill you clear up this problem.  Do your re-log into a Main Agni type server.

If you already  put a different shape than your old one   you can see if  the old one is now  back in inventory  and try to wear it again.

It is always a good idea to make yourself a notecard...of all your avatar shape numbers that can be seen in "edit appearance mode".  Head, face, torso arms legs feet ..everything...all those demensions. Keep a copy on you own pc hard drive. This also useful  to create again the exact same avatar in another OPEN Sim world.

    Good luck ...:)

  17. You really need a better  nvidia  video card  for SL....the one you are trying to use is really not good enough to run SL correctly. SL requires much much greater video performance than any  other graphic games  you may have used.

Also "silent videocard"  really just means we did not even give you a cooling fan.  Even if the card works it will soon overheat trying to do SL.

    Is this a laptop PC?

Nvidia 550 or  650  would be the minium I would recommend for SL.
