  1. Thank you for that last post Perrie :)  I was getting worried with so much initial negative response.

First ,I would like to tell you that  this last week  is my very first experience with linux or Umbutu. But between a few YouTube videos and a bit of googling I managed to convert both my Chromebooks to dual boot mode,(chrome os and ubuntu).

You mentioned that 95 % of us would need to go thru a steep learning curve.   I agree  BUT......

What do you think the percentage is ......of us who would secretely like to know how to use Linux?     :)

I have looked at this experience as a simple cheap way to learn something about  Linux enviorment and as a bouus i have 2 cool little laptops that can do SL quite well.

As far as what Miss Horten said about ubuntu 13.10 being dead one month from now.........it really means ver 13.10 wont be supported after that....it does not mean it wont keep working.....it just wont have update support.  But anyone using ubuntu knows that you can simply do the same install procedure again with the next version/release.  (ie win 95 does not stop working because Microsoft stopped suporting it.)

As to my motives for posting this in our forums....I was simply delighted with how well the new Intel Haswell integrated graphics performed in those  cheap little chromebooks...and i wanted to share this  with all in this forum. it might give a few more adventuresome residents the incentive to try linux for the first time.

  2. Buy a $200 Accer C720 with Intel 4th generation 2955U cpu with Haswell integrated 4600 HD graphics.

Go to this youtube page and watch how to install  Linux ubuntu into the Chromebook

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_MuVwJq_XQ

I suggest you use the 13.10 version of ubuntu called "saucy". I chose the "unity" desktop

I suggest you download "software-center"  (This is done in terminal mode "sudo apt-get install software-center")

Ubuntu is 64 bit  so....you will need to download a 64 bit LINUX viewer for SL.

I used Singularity 64 bit linux viewer....it will be in TAR/compressed  format  so  download "ArchiveManager" from the software-center that you installed. Use to extract "all files" in singularity folder.

After extracting Singularity viewer files.........go to terminal mode  and  "cd ~/Downloads/ name-of- singularity -folder"

Then launch singularity viewer in terminal mode "./singularity"

Thats it !    (after first launch  you will be able to launch singularity   from   unity desktop.)

Performance:   I am getting 25 to 38 FPS in High graphics mode  with draw distance of 128meters.

BUGS: ALT + left or right arrow key not working to rotate cam around focus.

I have done this with 2 chromebooks.......takes about 1 hour   to get all installed.

    Enjoy !

  3. For Nvidia cartds.....the 2nd digit  indicates the performance /speed of the  graphic card.  625 is very low performance card.
(lower numbers for 2nd digit is lower performance and vice versa)

I would recommend that if your buying a new card ..... to get at least a  550,650 or 750 .  these  can be found for just under $100 usd. But you need at least a 400 watt power supply. 500 watt PS  would be better.

  4. Perhaps you did not fully understand what Monti was trying to explain to you.....as it is the owner of the parcel that can  force all TP to a location of his/her choice...IF  they have intentionaly set  parcel permissions like this.  If they dont check that  box in tp landing coordinates...then  you can TP to any position you like. (provided you are not banned)

Now if you are looking for some way to circumvent  the parcel owners permissions settings...then   you are  trying to hack the system.

  5. Simple enough...its the only sim she  crashes at..........so give restart sim a try..:)  it only takes 5 minutes to restart  and can't hurt anything.  Sim restarts are well known to fix a varity of problems. Will it fix her problem?.....probably not...but its worth a try. And it eleminates another potentially possible cause.

    other thoughts.....

I am sure you notice that her frame rate FPS is always much lower at  or near ground level........look in statistics to view that.

Perhaps she is wearing something  that  tries to  do data communication  if she is within  range of some object in that sim and cause an abnormal load on communications with her viewer.

Good luck finding your friends issue........be sure to report here if you find a solution....to help others who may have similar issues.

  6. "i found a guide that showed me how to delete a bunch of files" ?     not sure why you mentioned this?

Also make sure you look inside every folder in your inventory.......in case it  got accidently hidden inside a different folder.

Also try clearing cache and then logging into to a different region/sim than you normally  log in at.

The only other alternative is to submit a support ticket to the Lindens to see if they can restore your missing items.

    Good luck :)

  7. I am curious if any of the helper experts can provide  some incite as to how  very large inventories ( > 70,000 items) can effect  viewer performance?  (good performance = no lag  + ability to have normal fast physical movement of avatar)

The effect my friend with very large inventories experience is frozen avatar at login........with "'inventory loading" message.

As soon as the entire inventory is loaded.... the avatar is able to move normally.......but  for very large inventories this can take several minutes  or sometimes  just crash  depending on viewer used.

I dont actually understand why  the full  inventory needs to be reloaded  anyway .....as long as the resident did not do a "clear cache" request.

This same person has an alternate avatar ....  with  a very small inventory......and that avatar is able to log in and have normal good performance immediately with no lag.

The same effect is seen with different viewers  although  some seem to recover faster.......ie  3rd party viewers.

This person is in europe so...ping times are close to 220 ms.......this person has  vista operating system with only 2 gb Ram available.  Connection speed is usually 6 mb. eithernet   not wireless. Has older hi performance nvidia graphics.

So it "seems" to be caused by the large inventory trying to load again on every relog.........  as the same PC  with  very low inventory avatar has no performance problems.

Any constructive thoughts  would be appreciated.....   thanks :)

P.S. yes she is making every effort to reduce inventory to a more manageable size

  8. Jira BUG-5504 that i submitted was closed out today  ...reason given:duplicate of MAINT-3517 bug

However when i did search of this issue  before submitting JIRA 5504.....no simililar issues were found!

and  we are not allowed / not  permitted to see what MAINT-3517  about  or its status on the issue tracking system.

i thought Lindens announced going  back to the old system where we could  view bug issues submitted by other residents?  What happened to that idea?

  9. We have recently noticed a new bug ....when a flying vehicle does a SIM crossing...the LSL collision event is being falsely triggered.  Was first noticed on flying vehicle landing approaches that  are near sim crossings.   Then later  we put a simple collision event script into a Hang glider vehicle root prim and found  2 collision events  were being triggered at most every sim crossing. All my testing was done on main sim servers Agni type servers.

I submitted jira bug 5504  this morning.

  10. Hi,

Everytime you Rez  a prim  or an object , It is assigned a new key.

If you take the object back to inventory   and rez it again....a new key is assigned.

If the object remains rezzed...and the sim is reset...it should  keep the same Key . (in theory ..:)

Disclaimer :As you know ....anything that can go wrong .....will.  Its only a question of time or SL

  11. Hi again...

Just to be clear what is your FPS typically before you enable chat window.?  and....what  GPU/ video card are you using?

What is your connection speed? What graphic mode are you using in the sl viewer i.e  high, low. med , ultra etc

What is your "draw distanced" set to in graphic preferences? Without that info it is difficult to make suggestions  to help.

Are you using wireless connection?   using Desktop? Laptop?

Have you tried logging into another region  that  has very few Avatars and very few textures?   Stand  facing the  open sea/ocean and see if your FPS  returns to  normal acceptable rate.

Lots of smart  residents  here to help you  just need a bit more information  to be helpful

    dd

Edit:  i just saw that   you say problem was solved  with  the new viewer version.......  good for you  :)
