And not just because of the walk (often you can set a landmark elsewhere for future use) but because those massive malls are a major source of lag. Each and every vendor is heavily scripted... I thought I would be clever once and do just that, but the LM would only deposit me back into the mall and only give me a beacon to the location where I created it.
  2. Amethyst Jetaime wrote: The malls help pay the tiers or you would not have any sim to go to. With the economy the way it is, merchants will not rent space in a mall unless they are guaranteed that some traffic goes by their shop, so the walk through is needed in order to rent the shops as you can only fit a few shops at the landing point. If a sim owner is smart they will mostly have shops in their mall that cater to the needs of people coming to the sim, such as the right clothing for the specific roleplay. People just don't donate enough to make it a purely voluntary contribution, so a sim owner that can't pay all the costs out of their own pocket has little choice. Even if they could, why should they? You should contribute something to keep places like this open, even it if is only a bit of your time. Believe it or not you are not entitled to be entertained for free. Maybe it is a small inconvenience to the visitor, but the alternative is either a lot less sims that welcome the public for entertainment or roleplay, or to start charging an entrance fee. Because a sim owner should not be buying a sim if they are not able or willing to pay for it out of pocket. That is just plain irresponsible on such a sim owner's part. Yes it is terrible that LL charges outrageous tier fees for sims, but that is ultimately LL's own fault. They were the ones that introduced the freemium model to SL and the ones that raised the price for those providing entertainment to their customers. I am speaking as someone that did give up a roleplaying sim because the cost became too much for me to sustain out of pocket when the economy soured and I refused to have the immersive environment I worked hard to build be ruined by using half the sim's resources for a mall. That was my choice. It really is a shame that the high cost of providing venues in a freemium based virtual world means that there are fewer places to enjoy or places that have to use half their sim's resources on malls just to try and cover the high tier. But that is how LL likes it. ETA: LL laid off a part of their workforce, closed offices, stuffed more sims per server and still couldn't cut land owners a small break on their tiers all the while trumpeting how profitable they are. I can never blame people who cannot afford to pay for other peoples sims, even if it means places must close down due to the high cost. Those mega mall mazes high in the sky shouldn't be necessary at all.
  3. I never noticed it before. It looks like a pointless jumble of Facebook style comments. I don't really see the point of it so I will go back to ignoring it now.
  4. I had to allow cookies in my browser to get the errors to stop.
  5. Sims are very expensive so stuffing them full of vendors to help offset the cost is often a necessary evil. It can be difficult to get vendors to rent in malls so showing them that people will be forced to walk through the mall may entice them to pay rent for a space there. I tend to leave rather than enduring that long walk to the teleporter to see the rest of the sim. I came to see the sim and not the mall.
  6. I think eventually desktop PCs will only appeal to people who need them for professional use. Everyone I know has ditched desktops for smaller, mobile alternatives. As far as SL is concerned, it becomes a question of how many people will be willing to go and shell out the money to have decent performance for an aging and outdated platform. They will pay more for a powerful enough laptop or pay less to be tethered to desktop that doesn't allow them any mobility at all. It is also my opinion that Lindens are working on other projects for the mobile market because there is a lot of money to be made there and the investors need an exit strategy from SL. SL can't remain profitable forever. Each year that passes only makes that $300 per month price tag for a virtual canvas to create with look more ridiculous. Mobile computing is not the fad. SL was the fad.
  7. Second Life has taught me that real life and real experiences are more rewarding than anything simulated in a virtual world.
  8. There are just some activities that are way better in RL than the virtual one, such as the two you mentioned. Since I prefer the RL version of dance clubs and sex, I wouldn't miss them if they were deleted from SL. I would continue to use SL as a creative sandbox and for roleplaying.
  9. Just go to the clubs and venues you enjoy hanging at and avoid the contests since most will be won by the person with the most alts anyway. Contests are just tricks to get people to show up. I rather go to a place that doesn't need to rely on such things because they have the creativity and talent to make people want to spend their precious time and money there.
  10. I have a Dell XPS 17 with a nVidia GeForce GT 555m and can run SL on ultra settings with shadows in most places. Turning shadows off I get great framerates on ultra settings no matter how poorly built a sim is or how congested with avatars.
  11. Guess I won't be using the MP to shop for awhile. Hope LL fixes it soon.
  12. Alt = Alternate Account. They are accounts that belong to the same person. Many people have a few of them and some have claimed to have a couple hundred of them.

Meh... It is just a preference to get a boxed copy in the folder of contents and not a requirement. Nice perk when it happens though. :smileyhappy: Having gone through the process of helping new residents with unboxing things, it always seemed like an unnecessary step which often includes trying to find a place that even allowed them to rez the box. Life would be much easier for them if they never had to unbox anything during their first hours in SL. I'm thrilled about this change even if some merchants may not be hehe.

  15. Right. I have had to educate many about that when they invite me to their groups. People simply do not know about it or understand what it even means.
  16. I hope there isn't a bug that is causing wearable mesh items to disappear for others with mesh enabled viewers. Are you sure you were the only one that could see it or was it just the person that ejected you who couldn't see? I find it hard to believe everyone at the club was using a non-mesh viewer. They should have been more understanding.
  17. I went to explore the new Premium Wilderness area and I must say I am impressed. Everything rezzed fast for me and I got decent framerates on ultra settings with my computer. I assume the fast rezzing and good framerates were because of mesh and not the over use of sculpties like most of the user created sims use that do bring my computer to its knees. I started with a boat tour which went smoothly and I didn't crash at all when crossing regions. My low script load may have helped with that. While exploring on foot, I corralled some guinea pig thingys to win some prizes and also wrestled an alligator. :smileylol: The experience was very immersive and I am excited with the possiblities the new Experience and pathfinding tools will present to the creator community in SL. Hopefully LL will turn the new user Experience into an immersive game type of environment that helps new residents learn and stay engaged while having fun until they are ready to move on to the rest of the grid. I think it could work. With all that said, I don't think the new Premium Wilderness is worth going premium just to see it, but if you do have a premium account I would reccommend taking a peek. My only gripe about the whole thing is it now makes me want a private island again which I am priced out of because the Tier rate for one is just too high. :smileysad: Anyway, the builders did a great job and I enjoyed visiting the place.

This suggests that camp 2 may have a lot of tents. The people that signed up must have known about the single names thing, this counts out new people and the upthick in signup data must have been a rush on alts. The last name "Resident" is not so special i suppose and you don't need an alt to change a displayname ... I always thought it came from people that wanted to create an alt before all good single names would be gone.So if it points in any direction i think it's camp 1. LL has the data, they determined that it's Camp 2. There will continue to be disagreement over this. I simply point out that Rodvik sees a bigger picture than we do. I know a lot of people (myself included) that went and grabbed their name when single user names were introduced which caused a huge spike in sign-ups on the charts that track them.
  19. It usually is not much money until you have a negative balance because of it. I would support a JIRA to fix this too. ETA: Perhaps group liability should only be limited to Group Owners and Officers. Or figure out a way to let individual members opt out per group.
  20. I usually only have positive things to say about SL when I don't invest any money into it and only log in for a couple hours per week to watch my avatar dance at one of the never-ending parties and then log out. When there is nothing invested, there is nothing to be negative about.
  21. After Dell sucked the soul out of Alienware, some of the former employees went and founded Origin PC.
  22. Well that's ok. I would take winning the lottery over getting a client side AO in the official viewer any day. :smileylol:
  23. Good point! I didn't think about that. :smileytongue: I think it will be great for newbies to start out in a Linden controlled experience. Perhaps an official tour of the grid to various places helping them learn the basics. That's really cool when I think about it.

Just a quick (very quick) search brought up some reviews. The nVidia card looks to be an entry level card that seems to barely run many modern games on low settings. The i3 processor also looks like it is a low end CPU not meant for gaming. I wouldn't expect great results with SL.

How will new residents deal with being tricked into giving permission to the wrong person or object? Will it be as simple as just leaving an "Experience" enabled sim or parcel? What will the limits be for controlling another person's experience? The blog said "More importantly, these permissions span multiple regions, scripts, and objects. This will allow you to create cross-Second Life experiences with one simple request." So it takes only one request to do multiple things?
