Second Life Grid Status says everything is just fine. I can't get in either. I thought I'd be the first to post the bad news.

I tried squatting once on a no return sandbox. I got my stuff back in twenty-four hours. It was just an experiment. I used to find "sandboxes" on private property, built stuff, rezzed stuff, cleaned it up and took it with me. After I got my 512 n 2008, I became very anti-squatter. Finding them on academic sims made me even angrier. If I find squatters, I alert the sim owner. I've even reported one idiot who left X-rated stuff on a G-rated academic sim to Linden Labs because the sim owner, was busy dealing with floods in real life. I wrote the sim owner and explained how to set autoreturn. My attitude is I pay. You should pay too.

I have been making plants i n Second Life for ages. They are easy. They are fun. They are special because they are one of three good reasons I have for keeping land. The others are breedables and a Zooby baby. I'd rather spend time in the garden than in the house any day of the week. The first picture is of borage which dates from 2009/2010. I still like it because there aren't that many blue flowers. There are jicamas (they date from around 2013). You can't grow them in Georgia or further north. They are a tropical plant and will only produce their edible roots in a very warm climate. Last, we have one of my Ozimal rabbits, Cunegonde, among the chocolate nasturtiums (Created this year!). I love the detail that goes into plants. I have more plants than I can rezz these days, but still dream of making more.

Dear Vehsta, I would say leave the car at home and go down to the big SLRR Railroad Station at Tulip Trees, where you can get a free locomotive. You are free to modify the thing, which I did. Heterocera has a huge railroad and you can ride the rails. Also walking the great wall is a lot of fun too.

Ah, there is a solution to the day 91 dilemma if the script allows a Boolean statement. Ban if (90<x OR member of group). Start a group with an alt or friend. This will prevent you from being banned at day 91. Newbies who want to become habitues can join the group. Seasoned players.... sorry you're out of luck. I hate the whole policy of banning anyone except for rank abuse, but that's just me.

Please say this is not so. Sunday night http://www.gridsurvey.com announced that close to 80% of the NMC Archipelago NMC sites, East Carolina University's Islands, University of Delaware, Teaching # islands and a few others were gone. Most of them are still gone today. I hope this is not permanent. If it is, the educational world in Second Life has lost a major player.

I think something else is going on. I wasn't a cloud when I logged in, but I put on long pants, socks, and a sweater in an attempt to go to a sim I thought was snowy. Long story short, the new outfit did not "take." After several encounters with a nasty security orb, I saw I was still wearing my summer shirt and shorts. When I took off all my clothes to take a bath. My legs were still pants shaped even though I removed my pants and my underpants. This is an intermittent problem. It may also be an inventory problem. I had no trouble with the viewer update last night on another machine.

What I think I wanted/needed was a viewer update. LL offered one a few hours after I wrote my post above. I updated both computers where I access SL and went to some crowded clubs. No more line mesh issues, and my avie has sore feet and a sore nose. Hs5 is one of my favorite dances.

I had the same issue and I use the latest version of Viewer 4, and rigged mesh has worked fine for over three months. I was surprised to "get my eyes poked out again," so you are not alone. So far I've only seen the issue once, and I blocked the offending avie.

I was in your shoes until very recently. Exodus (which is two years out of date but nice and stable) will run with XP. You may or may not get your eye poked out by rigged mesh, but you'll be able to get in world.

Spam groups are part of Second Life's international atmosphere. I remember learning about spam groups early in my Second Life career and wondering why would any one even put the word, Spam, in the title of a group. The answer is that among Portuguese speakers spam DOES NOT have the negative connotations it has for North Americans. People want the ads, just the way our mothers love those coupon circulars the supermarkets send out.

First, nobody ever gets banned from a sim for a good reason. It is always a bad reason and it often hurts. Second, chances are good that you did nothing. Some property owners close their parcels after and lock everybody out. It's ugly, but it's what they do. Third, there are lots of other clubs that will welcome you. And save the landmark for this place if you have it. Most clubs ultimately fail or change hands, and someone else will have that land some day, at which point you can come back.

I know this post appeared a long time ago, but I've been there and done that. First, buy standard (nonmesh) Zooby items. The playpen is only two prims so you may opt for that or you can spend your prims on a crib. I went with the crib so I could make my own bedding. This is fun. Second, find a QUIET sandbox and rezz your changing table or bath. These are copy and mod so if you make a mistake you have an original back in inventory. Do a lot of edit linked to find prim numbers. Make prims invsible or transparent so you can see inside. Eventually, (I did the changing table very late at night and messed it up and tried a second time) you will find the home prim. It is way inside. Make it larger and visible so you don't lose it. Take note of the essential prims, changing table pad, bath seat, standing mat. Leave those alone except for changing color or texture. Then hit Ctrl-alt-L to delink everything. You can then change or eliminate the extra prims. I went from 30 plus prims for a changing table down to seven. My bath went from 12 to nine. When you have the desired prims at least part way, start relinking, always remembering to hit the home prim last. If you relink in stages, hit the old group (with the home prim) last. This keeps the home prim #1. Then test your item. It should look for a baby. Zooby stuff survived my heavy hand, so it probably can survive yours. I know the original poster is long gone, but if anyone out there is preparing for a Zooby child, this is advice worth passing on.

And if I run.... Windows 10 (or Linux...very much plan B) I will have the same performance I have now. Actually, I'm running 9 year old software full of patches (some of them even after support got "cut off" last winter) , a variety of updated peripherals. And despite all kinds of supposedly wizz bang features, I haven't seen anything that new and novel in the way of performance in about ten to twelve years. Siri and Cortana are as close as its come. Maybe really workable touch screens would be another new and interesting feature. Face it all these operating systems do the same thing: They run browsers and games. They run word pcrocessors and spread sheets and database managing software. They run graphics software. I would like to be able to use a browser that sees rigged mesh. Remember, I get my eyes poked out. Singularity crashed all over the place. I may try Cool LV. I just hope the last gate (the one that says you can't run these older browsers) doesn't come crashing down for six to nine months.

I shouldn't have to update any operating system if my computer still works just fine. I am being forced to ugrade from a perfectly good (more peripherals than machine now) nine year old, Windows XP machine to something bigger and fancier. Let's call planned obselescence what it is and scream from the rooftops that it S---ks! All that said, I find Linden Labs timing just impecable. On July 29, Microsoft comes out with Windows 10. I saw no reason to upgrade to Windows 7 (I have it at work and did not see much of an improvement in performance.) Windows 8 was a mistake, and not worth a new machine (My machine can't run Windows 7, so 8 was out of the question unless worthwhile), so you can guess what I'm waiting for. Naturally, I'd like to see Linden Labs, GIMP, and other critical software providers get on the Windows 10 bandwagon and for Microsoft to get any big bugs out of Windows 10 before I buy in. I'm used to having my online life in the hands of big corporations. Still, this means a wait of six months. So yes, I will give in to planned obselescence in December 2015/January 2016. And I will miss Maggie Mae (my computer) as I have missed few inanimate objects, but all good things come to an end. It would have been a lot better for Linden Labs to have kept supporting XP until the spring of 2016. I am just hoping I won't have to take a hiatus from Second Life due to technical issues. I can spend the fall with Exodus. (I get my eyes poked out from time to time, but not as much as you think.) I'll bow to useless technical change and corporate greed. And I'll planned obselescence one big RASPBERRY.

"Democratizing content" has nothing to do with democracy as voters know it. Rather it is a way of saying that any one willing to learn a skill or pay a small fee (or not so small fee) can rezz prims. Usually democratizing content/media etc... is mentioned along with the so-called (It's really rentals and if it supports people it is a second job with no benefits) sharing economy. The haves have more. The have-nots can make a killing as Uber drivers or super Task Rabbits, or they can open their own Feastly restaurants. Anyone willing to buy in, can get their share of democratized content.

OK, mesh shmesh and I mean it. You can always tweak your avatar a million times to do it over so no big deal. If you want to, Ruth is still back there in the library, fully dressable in a bathing suit and customizable with sliders. And what is the fun of something you can't fix a million times. Perfection is what is truly boring. But what is trully complicated about Second Life is the "what do I do?" factor. My answer from previous MU**ing experience (in mostly text based worlds and also in Active worlds) is find the road and start walking. Look to your right. Look to your left. Look above you. Look behind you. Try the search engine. See where you land. If you don't bounce on someone's ban lines or get booted by a security orb, try harder. Put terms in the search engine for what interests you. If you are a libertine, put some credit card info on line and go search out..... If you are conservative, put Christian in the search engine. If you want to ski....you know waht to search. If you want to swim.... same deal. Do you want music? Learning to see, walk, and find things is lesson one. After that you can think about what you want for your avie and how to make her trully your own. PS, I just stripped off Ruth's old clothes, uploaded my own textures, and dressed my avie. The texture hair was an utter disappointment (Bald spot in the back! when cut short). One of my first successful builds, though I had to chase it all over the sandbox (I did not know about posing stools) was a hair piece for a short bob. I can still wear the thing and feel good which is very weird. Beginner's luck is part of the fun.

Not only have I been griefed occasionally (Once every couple of months), I've been treated rudely. I've been ill used and I've dealt with idiots of all stripes. The encroacher I've usually been able to settle with without bringing in Linden Labs. Those who litter tax payer or grant funded (educational and nonprofit) sims with innaprporpiate items earn a report for their theft and for making good institutions look bad. The person who releases so many offensive particles he/she makes a sim unuseable is a rare and spectacular creature. What happens more often is people treat me rudely, and I treat them rudely as well. Mea culpa. Yes! I've bounced on ban lines. I've played tag with security orbs (Run to the front porch and take a selfie before being sent home). Parasailed (parachutes are wonderful!) over and into no fly land guarded with an orb etc.... I think some of this is frustration with orbs, jungle walls, and ban lines. There is a fine line between, incivility and griefing. I doubt any one is wholly innocent, and some are very guilty.

Actually, you can rest easy as far as the 86,400 second limit is concerned. With a second computer and an alt or a powerful computer and two logins, you can beat that time.

Interesting survey... but some of the wording is ambiguous. For example, what do you mean by "stopping playing" Second Life? Taking twenty-four hours off for the Sabbath or staying away all day because I am at a conference is a different kind of pause in the action then having it blocked by some filter or being unable to log in for days on end. I can handle twenty-four hours away especially if the choice is mine. Forty-eight hours is harder, especially if it is a pause from all kinds of media. Being forced to stop forever would put me in a world of hurt.

I wish I could say I missed big projects in Second Life, but quite frankly I don't. I think some of this is because I keep the Explore Second Life Spread Sheet which is still the most extensive and current list of educational sites in Second Life. This means I get to see the system abused, and it gets abused when you turn loose developers inside SL's walled garden. Unless you know Second Life, it is easy for accountability to slip away. My blog has a lot of examples of this. I'll just list two. How Not to Build and Academic Sim and Squandered Opportunity in the North Country There are ways to stop this kind of thing: Renting only a 4096, giving time for your internal developers to discover Second Life's limitations and good points, NOT hiring an outside builder.
