  1. SHA1 has been available for a long while now: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSHA1String MD5 too https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlMD5String
  2. That's a question better asked to the creators of the combat HUD. Sounds like they have some sort of odd bug in their code.
  3. I Just want to report that my LeTigre sim, Borgbeef, has become very crashy since Wednesday's roll. Has crashed twice today for no reason. Notes say some new Interest List optimization, i'm guessing it's the culprit.
  4. Whirly Fizzle wrote: Monty has made a lot of improvements to the way HTTP textures work recently on Viewer 3. His changes are not in the 4.3.1 release of Firestorm but will be in the upcoming release in ~ a couple of weeks, so give that a try and see if Firestorm is then comparable with Viewer 3 in that regard - it should be. I read that as "LL's viewer will be nerfed down to Firestorm levels" :matte-motes-evil-invert: Which given what I know is probably true.
  5. The cache can and does get corrupted on a regular basis. There's no downside to clearing it out, so no reason to complain at the suggestion. At best, it will help. At worst, nothing happens.
  6. It's also possible some of the 'missing prim' reports are due to the packet loss that was going on. It was pretty bad. However, I can report at least for my neck of the woods, the packet loss has finally subsided. If LL did anything to correct that, thanks. 0% packet loss, no "invalid objects' = Happy camper.
  7. Also just about everything in your list is pure garbage. I'll take them one by one: Nalates Urriah wrote: The community did hire Karl to write the code for the deformer. The community started a project the Lab did not want to take on. The Lab made no request of the community to start the project. They informed the community it would be some time before they would even consider such a project. So, the community took it on and they did stand tall. But, since then the community has pretty much abandoned the project, as the lack of test garment updates shows. They certainly did not put effort into it during the period Oz was asking for help and when we might have gotten something done. Besides, the project has always only been of interest to a small minority of the SL people. Why would the Lab pursue that project with all the pressure from the greater community to fix and develop other things? Like bake fail. They take far more heat for that and it likely affects player retention far more then the lack of a Deformer. Priorites. Wrong. As someone who sells Mesh items, I can tell you, the deformer is of high priority to EVERYONE in SL. Everyone is unhappy mesh doesn't fit them. Everyone doesn't want to pay extra for custom fitting. Everyone doesn't want to change their body shape to match every creator's items they encounter. *This* is the reality. Things like bake fail, are very minor on the scale of SL issues these days. VERY. LL is going forward with the new baking system solely out of their own interests (thin clients, reduced bandwidth, reduced costs). It's not because of some big 'lets help the residents' motivation. if that were so, they would have done it years ago. As you say, LL looking out for LL interests. As well, it takes 0% of their capacity to put in the deformer. IT wasn't written by them! it was written by the community. It's complete, 100% done, and all they have to do is push compile. SO please, don't try to say "LL doesn't have the bandwidth", that's just ignorant. TPV Dev’s did write some code and fix some bugs. But, the code still needs to be tested with a wide range of garments. The TPV Dev's did not take on the whole project to; write code, build test garments, and do the testing. Nor write the reports and analysis that the LL management wants to make a decision. I sincerely applaud the TPV Dev’s help and give them their props. But, making it work for now and in the future is still a responsibility dumped on the Lab. And we have not provided adequate help or the right kind to the Lab in a timely manner to move the project forward... since its not moving. Writing reports is an LL's employee's job, not the communities job. We can't do *everything* for them. I think we've done more than enough. If you're seriously going to try to say It's the community's fault LL doesn't have time to write a report to their boss, well, Please... don't bother. The community did write some wiki pages. The community did create some test garments. I’ve never denied that. I’ve listed what made it to the Lab and into the JIRA. My point, made repeatedly, is: those items were not updated when the Lab needed them updated. And to this date still have not been updated. Hmm, and yeah, funny that. I have yet to see LL make a single request for updated garments. Anywhere. Not on the blog, Not in the JIRA. Not even at Oz's meetings, which I've attended numerous times. SO where exactly is this info that LL wants updated garments coming from? I submitted garments, Nobody has IMed me asking for an updated copy. So to me, that says they don't need one. The community, in the form of a few individuals, did provide feedback. But, they also piled on a ton of expectations for the Deformer that it would never be able to meet. The complaints about the mesh topology, weighting, and desire for a totally new avatar combined with an apparent lack of interest and unwillingness to help when needed, I think stalled the project. It got pushed into a ‘comprehensive’ review process. Sort of like a comprehensive US immigration law where nothing gets done. There's always people with inflated expectations. If that stopped anything from happening, SL would never have got out of beta. LL is fully capable of doing what they always do in such citations, Ignore people, and push ahead. THAT certainly isn't stopping this. Again you say the "Unwillingness to help" lie. Show me ONE instance where LL asked for something, and it was denied. And again, I say LL asking, not you putting words in their mouth. that Definitely doesn't count.
  8. Sorry but your claims are fallicious. All of the attached items can be used with the latest version of the deformer. All of the items previously submitted can too, they only need to be re-uploaded with a newer version. The fact is, you keep saying "LL Says it's not enough" but I have yet to actually see anyone but YOU say that. LL hasn't asked for garments since last year, when they received them. That requirement is over, and LL hasn't asked for more since. If LL wants more garments, I want to hear LL ask for them. And what does the fact an item is low or high poly have to do with anything? That's what you do when you test you know, you try against all use cases, not just one specific case. I would expect low and high items to be submitted. It's immaterial to the biggest question, and only makes you seem even more ignorant. I can only assume you're being a Linden Lab Shill, trying to place all the blame on the community for the fact that *LL* won't implement the deformer. You correctly pointed out the "respnsibilities the Lindens have to the coorporation". So tell me, how is the fact that LL is looking out for LL, the fault of the community? It's not. The fact LL is looking out for LL is LL's fault alone. They do not want to implement the Deformer, so they continue to make up reasons not to. We could submit 1000 garments, and I guarantee, it would still not be *enough* or some new reason would be given. That sadly is the fact.
  9. I can also confirm 10-15% packet loss since Tuesday's Roll. The Sim I'm usually in is LeTigre, but many of the surrounding sims are Main Channel. The packet loss started right after Tuesday's roll completed. I have reset everything on my end, so it's certainly not that. I waited for my sim ( Named Borgbeef) to roll to the new Le Tigre version today, and It seems today the packet loss as dropped somewhat to around 3-5% But that's still 3-5% more than I used to get. The one odd thing I"m noticing is, a *lot* of "Kills on unknown objects" messages, just constant. I don't know what that means, but it's something new I've not seen before. A sample: I'm using LL's Standard Viewer 3.4.5

But I would adivse others to simply start using the new search instead of crying over the loss of the old. The new URL is http://search.secondlife.com/viewer/search There's very little you can't do with it that you could do with the old.
  11. The 'old search' was announced as depreciated the same time the 'new search' was brought in with Viewer 2. It's only been running on LL's good graces all this time (and the fact that many V1 viewers still were in use). But now that Phoenix and other V1 based viewers have dropped to negligble usage levels, I expect LL has finally decided to pull the plug.
  12. Lucia Nightfire wrote: I will say I'm glad that 13.03.22.272565 got the update to pathfinding. Now there is no AI Step Time consuming physics timing if there are no PF characters present in the region. That means regions without PF characters can perform as if PF was disabled. Of course, once a single PF character is introduced to a region, it can expect to take a 3 - 4ms hit to physics timing depending on how many objects are set to Movable Obstacle, but at least resources are no longer wasted when PF characters are absent. Thanks for that much needed revision. I agree it's a nice optimization. But for the record, adding a PF character to my sim only shows AI Step time taking 0.75 to 1.0 ms. So either I'm special, or maybe there are even more optimizations at work here.
  13. Linden Lab puts out the 'de facto' standard of viewers. It's all anyone really needs to use SL. TPVs of course add on their toys, and that's fine. But if you're going to say that should "SL sicken and Die" because of something TPVs do or don't do, and that's LL's fault.... That's some seriously messed up logic. TPV developers are responsible for making sure their modifications don't break the viewer. And that's exactly how it should be. To have a LL developer chase down a bug only to find out it's some bug a TPV developer introduced, would be a massive waste of LL's time. So that is why they ask people to use the Official Viewer to see if the bug is still present.
  14. I think this video of Steve Balmer is right on the head PCs will never go away, but our definition of what a PC is will change.

(Incidentally, anybody clinging to the idea that desktops will live forever, well, search for Mary Meeker's 2012 "State of the Internet" presentation and you'll see why business just doesn't care about desktops any more, and why the glacial pace of Windows 8 adoption should be no surprise.) The "Glacial Pace' of Windows 8 Adoption is a surprise to no-one. It provides *nothing* of note over Windows 7. So why waste one's money on it? That has nothing to do with desktops in general. Only a fool wouldn't care about desktops anymore. They are and always will be the workhorse for actually getting things done. Nobody can seriously do real work on a phone or tablet. Real work or Real Play.

This blog is amazing and it shows Netflix doesn't hide anything like LL does for substantially less money. Yes I know there 2 different products, but thats not the point. http://techblog.netflix.com/ Nimh yeah, except that it's totally irrelevant. SL is *nothing* like Netflix, and none of what they do is applicable to Second Life. It's kind of like telling NASA scientists, "Look at how efficient McDonalds is at making burgers, now apply that to making space vehicles". And next time you go on a rant in-world, I"ll remember to bring up here where you say you left SL long ago. heh

  18. Coby Foden wrote: 2. You upload a texture as 2048×2048 what you intend to use on a prim. Will the texture show as 2048×2048 on the prim? Once again, no it won't. Because the maximum texture size is 1024×1024 the system will reduce the too big texture to the allowed size. This doesn't work how you think it works. the 2048x2048 texture is resized *at upload* to 1024x1024. Not when applied to the prim. But the point being, clothing isn' the 'do all, be all' of SL. there's very good reasons to have textures for building that are 1024x1024. In fact I wish 2048x2048 was still available as it was up until 2008-2009 as there are certain instances where the larger dimensions are desirable. But c'est la vie.

Or is anyone else experiencing this problem? Thanks Magnum has the new "Interest List" code, which changes and optimizes how the server sends information about the avatar's surroundings to the viewer. So it sounds like the bot's issue with finding items around it would be directly related. I could only guess the bot relied on some behavior that LL has no changed.
  20. Don Ormega wrote: The really odd part is when the packet loss occurs it also knocks out the audio stream and or skype. Now why? they are seperate services and shouldn't be affected by packet loss on SL. This is right, and should tell you SL has nothing to do with it. Sounds like an ISP issue.
  21. solstyse wrote: Gadget Portal wrote: The problem with your suggestion, as was just pointed out, is that making SL for mobile machines would be dumbing it down. I want upgrades to the platform to actually upgrade, not remove functionality because people don't want to accept that SL is comparable to 3D PC gaming technology. Get a gaming rig, or get a new hobby that doesn't require high end hardware. Imagine if you went to the Battlefield 3 forums, or the forums of any online game, and said "my computer isn't good enough, it can't run the game, please take features and graphics away from everyone else until I can run it on my toaster". This is the same thing. Context, yet again. Windows DESKTOPS are moving to a mobile STYLE ui. DESKTOP computing is more reliant on the cloud, due to the INFLUENCE of tablets. FEWER DESKTOP APPLICATIONS RESIDE ON THE LOCAL MACHINE. Want to play a Direct X game in Linux? Connect to a REMOTE SERVER. They exist. Want to play an XBOX game on an ARM DEVICE? Connect to a REMOTE SERVER. It works. It's being done. Microsoft office 2013 will be available not only as a local application, but also as a SUBSCRIBTION SERVICE in which A SINGLE PURCHASE will licence MULTIPLE PRODUCTS on MULTIPLE ARCHETECTURES. Are you calling the largest software developers in the world wrong? Gamers have moved to platforms. Hmmm wonder why. Maybe because to them, buying high end video cards every single year is just a little too... ninety's. OPERATING SYSTEMS as well as OTHER SOFTWARE is TRENDING TOWARD EFFICIENCY. as is the latest X86 HARDWARE. The EXODUS OF HARDCORE GAMERS TO PLATFORMS SUCH AS XBOX AND PS3, combined with the INFLUENCE THAT MOBILE PROGRAMMING is having on DESKTOPS will cause the trend of LOWER HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR MANY OF THE SAME FUNCTIONALLITY., EVEN IN DESKTOPS. Which will in turn cause FURTHER DEMAND FOR LOWER COST MACHINES. Now, does all the capitalizatioin make it clear that mobile platforms have a serious economic and technological impact on every computer, including desktops? Can you finally understand that is what I'm trying to say? They are no longer seperate, and the future will be that mobile and desktop computing will only grow closer? Now, it's perfectly okay for you to keep living a decade ago instead of looking at current and future trends. It won't hurt you. But LL is a corporation, so they don't have that luxury. FACT: Desktops are now the smallest and fastest shrinking segment of computing. Low end laptops are the largest and fastest growing. This leads to a stagnation in what technology is considered mosst common. FACT: Non-local software, which BEGAN with smartphones and tablets, has migrated to the desktop environment. FACT: The shrinking divide between ARM and x86 archetecture is driving the sales of low to midrange x86 machines, while the migration of gamers to machines that are less volatile is harming the sale of high end machines. Now, if I was to go to your Battlefield 3 forum asking, "How do I optimize my existing hardware so that I can keep playing." I'd probably get something better for an answer than getting the bashing that seems to invariably come with that question here. My point is, and always has been, that NOBODY NEEDS A LECTURE ABOUT UPGRADING THEIR MACHINE. It's as if deciding that when SL is the ONLY thing it can't do, it is most economically viable to wait until there is at least one other thing that they wish it would do better is somehow being called the less responsible decisiion. That's like saying up is down and left is right. And as time goes on, and people use low draw apps on.... you guessed it, THEIR DESKTOPS it will become more and mroe common for SL to be the ONLY thing that makes them unhappy. And most people will sooner just replace a program than a whole computer. BERATING THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE OTHERWISE SATISFIED WITH THERI COMPUTER, EVEN THE OTHER 3D GAMES THEY PLAY, WITH THE SOLE EXCEPTION OF SL WILL ONLY MAKE THEM MORE UNHAPPY WITH SL. It's a simple concept. It really is. Furthermore, the only way that sl will be even remotely close to 3d gaming technology is if, just as developers of 3d gaming technology have done, they optimize their software. If it makes it to that level, then the only way to stay there is to do as they do, and look to the future, not the past. Problem is, most everything you state here isn't true. Gamers aren't flocking to streamed game services. Most such services are on the brink of failure due to low adoption rates. Gamers are leaving consoles by the droves, due not only to the artifically inflated prices of games, but due to draconian DRM policies and now resale prevention. Low grade laptops are popular because of economic factors, not because people want lower end machines. As reported in many trade publications, PC manufacturers are now feeling the bite of having made such low cost machines available. You are right that people now expect the price, But they still expect the high performance. Nobody wants Windows RT, which is why Microsoft is dropping their Surface RT offering. That flies in the face of your idea that everyone wants lower cost machines that are less powerful. But most importantly: SAYING SOMETHING IN ALL CAPS DOESN"T MAKE IT MORE RIGHT.
  22. I have to blame PC manufacturers for the current situation. They kept rolling out 400 dollar laptops which were so technologically stunted as to not be good enough for anything more than word processing. And of course people who couldn't afford to pay 1000 for a 'real' laptop bought them. Now they are trying to run applications like SL as if it was a real computer. Of course the best part is, now PC manufacturers have created an expectation that laptops should always be 400 dollars, and cratered their own market and sales. C'est la vie.

Whoever this person is, I would ignore them. It doesn't sound like they know what they are talking about either. A script 'pinging' even in the worst possible case of, lets say, a sensor every 0.25 seconds, can't make a sim 'unstable'. Not only that, but someone else in the sim can't see that anyway. They are just messing with you it sounds like.
