  1. and....Vindication! Opened FS today, and see a new FS was released. Went to the FS site to read the changes. This is one of the changes: "* Mac Notarization! Mac users will hopefully enjoy fewer installation issues and fewer voice and media issues. We did finally run the gauntlet to get our Mac builds notarized." So, for all those who were incredibly rude about why I would post such things, perhaps, before typing, you should read and test. And for all those who thanked me, publicly and privately, now you have an official DMG. TY FS team for the change. It really is about time.
  2. @Lyssa GreymoonExactly what I did the first time. The second time though was as I posted. Once that Cancel or Trash comes up, the DMG you are using is marked by the Mac. It will never install. I have never had this problem before with any program, and I work in high tech. I have never had to bypass Gatekeeper totally. There is a first time for everything.
  3. @Silent Mistwalker@Lindal Kidd@Myntz Mysterious Informed Miro immediately. And just filed in the Jira as @Lindal Kiddsuggested. @Myntz MysteriousNeither did I when FS first released the newest version. I think it comes from the uninstall and trying to install again. Gatekeeper just will not let it pass. On top of that, I think FS should actually register the APP if they have not yet done so. If for whatever reasons they cannot do so, or Apple is finicky about it, then I can almost guarantee the next OS release will have a more aggressive Gatekeeper, as that is how Apple has been going. In short, the DMG of FS should be registered with Apple, and if it already is then I am completely at a loss to explain why Gatekeeper insisted it was a corrupted or dangerous file and would not let it pass.
  4. @Lindal KiddAhh a voice of sanity in the wilderness. And I let Miro know in the FS group on line. Gave him the link. Up to FS to deal with it now. And to @Silent Mistwalkerpeople have incredibly short memories. To repeat what it says in the first post. This is only information I wanted to share with the Mac Firestorm community, to help someone else avoid the two hours of frustration I had. I honestly do not care if you are on the LL viewer or some other, nor what OS you use. It is none of my business nor is it of any importance to me. This was an information post about a problem and how to fix it. Next time, I may just keep the solution and problem to myself to avoid the rude answers.
  5. I am not asking for you to do anything. I was just giving out info. for those who use FS on Montery OS and ran into the same problem. I could not care less what viewer you use.
  6. I am just putting this out there, to save anyone the headache I went through yesterday. If the Mods want to move this to a different forum, go right ahead. I am giving you all the steps so I don't get remarks like - well, you forgot this or that. History: This is only for Mac people. Please, no Windows-Mac arguments. This, I think, only applies to Monterey and forward, because Gatekeeper has become aggressive at keeping unwanted apps off Macs. I suddenly experienced (and still am btw) a huge drop in my FPS on my Mac. I went through all the usual procedures: Reboot Router Reboot Machine Close all open programs Making sure my AV which is Bitdefender and always served me faithfully, did not suddenly go bonkers. Checking all the Network and Graphic levels in FS Making sure my Mac was clean and up to par. The one I use for SL is not my M1 - but a MacPro late 2019 with 1TB of disk, 16 g. Memory...it is the top model of the range. Nothing worked or help solve the problem. Then what do you next? You call your ISP and figure out what is going on. My ISP is excellent, and I was wondering if they were playing around with the infrastructure in my area, as they are getting ready for Optic Fibers. After exhaustive time on the phone going through every scenario they could think of and I could think of, they are going to replace my Mesh Router. I tend to doubt that will help but am willing to give it a chance. The next step I did, and this one is where I hope will save you a lot of heartache if you try to install FS on Monterey. I decided to reinstall FS - it was a possibility that something got corrupted. To uninstall, I always make sure it is a complete uninstall of any program. For this I use a very well know Mac App called, "Clean My Mac" and go to the Uninstaller. That is when my 2-hour nightmare started. Apple has something called "Gatekeeper." This is a known product for Developers and tech people, but the basic public is sometimes not aware of it. Gatekeeper had become more and more aggressive with each OS release. In short, what it does is prevent you from downloading anything that is not from the App Store. Until now, it never had problems with FS. Now it decided to play dirty. If you wish to download other products, you go to System Preferences ---> Security & Privacy, unlock and check the second box on the bottom, which says: "App Store and Identified Devleopers" In most cases this will work fine. Note: There is an option hidden there. This is critical to install Firestorm. When you download the Viewer from FS it all works fine. Then you extract it to applications. NP. Try to run it, and your Mac will come back with a message - "There is something damaged or corrupted in the file." And two options Cancel or Trash. Try to run that same dmg again to get FS up, you will immediately get that message. I tried this over 5 times Download-Extract to Application - Run and each time i got that message. There is a trick most Mac developers know. When the app is already in the applications folder, you do not double click on it to run. You Control-Mouse Click which opens a menu. Then on that menu you click Open. This almost always works. As it bypasses Gatekeeper most of the time. Turns out Apple really does not like the FS Viewer DMG. I mean, they really do not like it on Monterey. So, i was left very perplexed.FS has been running on the Mac - the newest version. But suddenly with a reinstall on Monterey it would not past Gatekeeper, and Gatekeeper demanded I trash it because it was potentially corrupted. This took a search starting the Firestorm app and going into the Apple Gatekeeper. The Solution: You will need terminal knowledge here. Sorry about this folks but only way to do this, until FS figures out a way to appease Apple. Good luck with that! Also there is a lot of misinformation about this command on the Net, so be careful you type it in exactly how it is written below. Open your Apple Terminal. If you are not familiar with this go to your Applications button on the dock, click it and in the search bar just type in Terminal, and then click on the Terminal app. Your Terminal will open up and wait for your input. Type in as follows: sudo spctl --master-disable Exactly like that. What that command does is tell Apple to disable the entire Gateway system. Make sure you type it in exactly as above, because as I have said, previous versions of the Mac OS had a different syntax to type in. Then hit Enter. When you type that command in the Terminal will ask you for Password for the Mac. If you do not have that password - then you could not be on your screen in the first place. If you type in your PW correctly, Hit Enter and the command line should return without any errors or any messages. To verify this worked, go back to System Preferences ---> Security & Privacy and on the bottom a third option should appear "ANY Program." Use this with great caution, especially if you do not know Macs well. Check "any program"! Now make sure you trashed all your previous FS attempts at install. Download a fresh DMG from FS, put it in Applications folder. Control-Click to open. You should now get the message "Unknown developer. Are you sure you want to Open the App?" With options. Just click OPEN. Voila! FS will run Clean up - if. you want to keep your Mac protected now go back to the terminal and type in: sudo spctl --master-enable Will ask you for PW again. With this the "Any program" disappears and Gatekeeper is back up and running. END P.S. I hope FS makes nice with Apple for the next release.
  7. I emphatically agree with you, believe it or not! Completely! It is exactly what I wrote in the beginning. If you want to charge for your work as a DJ, just like a designer or builder or scripter, then by all means do so. Charge the patrons before they enter the club or the area you are playing. You can even arrange 10 minutes of "demo" just like a demo of Mesh clothing. A script to do this is very simple to make, as I have already said. Et-Voila, they pay you. Everyone is happy, as they have paid you for your work. And the big plus of all of it is that there are no people on the stage reminding us to tip every other song or gesturbating about how wonderful the "Tune" is or any other such nonsense. The whole experience would be so much more enjoyable and relaxing. You produce a product, and as a consumer, I am given a price to pay for it if I chose to do so. Or move along to another music venue. There are, as they say, many ways to flip that coin. ☺️ (Emojis included!) Totally completely agree with you.
  8. As the OP I was surprised by the amount of people who agreed with my points, even partially. I am also more than a bit surprised that this thread did not just fade into oblivion. There seems to be a general dissatisfaction as far as I can tell from reading the thread with: Begging for Tips - The whole begging for tips thing - no need to go into it again. It is all in the original post. Splitting Tips Venue & DJ/Host - An interesting point was brought up, which I feel bears mentioning. Some clubs have a Tip board where the Venue takes a percentage of all tips given to the DJ or host. Club Owners - This is a deplorably misleading and obnoxious thing to do. Here, if someone wishes to tip a DJ or Host - they should not be misled by having a venue grab a portion of those tips. (To my mind, it is a hidden way of stealing.) Gesture Babble - The gestures that crowd the chat from hosts and guests - often with meaningless sounds (Some gestures are funny, but repeatedly...well..) Some places are full of gestures or from a message sender, which repeats the chat message to all in the club every X minutes. It becomes ludicrous. Particle Insanity - I will add something I forgot about. The Particle Crazy clubs where you can go blind just watching the screen with all the particles coming out from tip jars and hosts who think it is funny. That is an immediate TP away. Automatic & Immediate Greeting - These are intensely stupid. Many of the clubs have an invisible scripted pad which relays to the host and DJ you just landed. In one second, an automatic "Hi blah blah" comes out. Totally useless and overdone. Not to mention annoying as hell. Same Greetings Repeated In A Pattern - The same 5 greetings which are rotated by a hud. Again, profoundly stupid. If a host is really doing their job, they should know how to actually type out a greeting! (BTW, it is sometimes incredibly easy to see this stuff is coming from some host hud, as half the words are misspelled!) Venue Tipping - This seems to be split in the posts. I understand wholeheartedly why some feel the venue deserves tips. However, I stand by my opinion. I will not tip a venue. Is The DJ Being Paid By The Venue? - There was a very interesting suggestion about knowing if the DJ was being paid by the club or not. I do not think that will ever fly in SL. However, it was an interesting suggestion. Still that does not mean a DJ should repeat every 5 minutes "The XXX club does not pay us so please tip as your tips are all the Lindens we make" - and I have heard this statement made ad nauseam at a very popular SL club, by one of its most popular DJ's. Needless to say, I TP'd away in disgust. Linden Contest Boards - The reasons clubs started with this is to up their numbers. If you are gaming the numbers, you cannot complain about the crazy people who keep 10 alts on the side just to make the money. Forget the money contests. They are useless and there are so many ways to game them, it is just a waste of Lindens. - If your club is good with decent music and decent DJ's you will not have to game the numbers. Simple as all that. And why a DJ would pay into a contest board is beyond my comprehension. A DJ Union (LMAO) - I read a suggestion which made me laugh in real. That DJs should form a union. Good luck with that one. Remember, when there is a union, there are those who refuse to belong. And those DJs will get all your business. Dance Pads Every 2 Meters - I will add yet another small thing, which is purely based on my personal taste. It is great to have those dance pads out in a club. For those who don't use huds and do not buy dances or dance sequences, it is a great option. But Dear Lord! Do not cover your entire dance floor with those pads. If you walk into a club with 10+ avatars dancing on those pads, it looks like a puppet show! Leave room for the people with their own huds and sequences to dance. (Btw Dance animations are a vast business in SL.) Complaining About Customers Who Do Not Tip You - Edited because of another comment I read which was seriously out of place - If you see someone who comes in again and again and never tips, and you are a DJ or Host - that is not your business nor should it be a concern of yours. Maybe that person has no real money to put into SL. Maybe they need every cent to just exist in real and being in SL is an escape for them. Maybe they just don't tip. I have no idea why it would be a discussion or something that should be noticed by a DJ. It makes one wonder what actually goes on in the IM's between a DJ and their Host. Owning and running a club in SL is not a moneymaking venture. (If you want to make money in SL, do original designing, scripting, animations or better yet, own land and rent it out. Not even then is it a guaranteed success.) Plan on being on the negative side if you own a club and having to put money into it all the time. Owning a club is done out of a serious love of music and offering people the experience you want to offer them. Keep an Excel Spreadsheet of all your expenses. That way, it will better inform you of exactly what is going out and what is coming in. It is the same advice I give to all designers who ask me. It would surprise one how much texture uploading, mesh or non-mesh creation, time, packaging and creation actually costs in real USD. A DJ supposedly loves the music they play. Whether they talk.a little or a lot depends on their voice, their sense of humor and if they have something to say. Some DJ's I am friends with do it for love of music and they make decent money. Not one of them has to ask for tips as they come their way naturally and also to their hosts. Some very intelligent arguments were made for both sides. I will say this again. I respect any and all who totally disagree with me and you have the right to your opinions, as I have the right to my own opinions. Enjoy the music. Enjoy the dancing. Enjoy the nice people you meet. And remember the moment SL is no longer fun, just X out. (Oh, almost forgot. Just to answer the question - no, I was never banned from a club! At least not yet. However, there is always a first time! I was asked on two separate occasions, at a famous semi-formal club, to wear something a bit more appropriate, but that was fair.)
  9. Hiyas Rowan: This is where i bow out. Sorry, these "news" stories just do not hold any "water." Probably could make the same exact argument for using your computer, cell, and iPad in a much better manner. Nope. Not getting into this debate. To me it is ludicrous. Have an awesome day :Enjoy!
  10. Hiyas Coffee: I am not sure why you think this, but I work in AI. In Chaos Theory, Complexity Theory and Emergence. That is not buzzword bingo. AI makes use of Distributed Systems and in Blockchain especially in non-linear systems (which lay at the heart of real AI). Indeed, my data scientists must know these technologies to get a position. Not sure where you are getting your info from. Additionally, Banks, Health companies and Insurance companies are all experimenting with Distributed systems and Blockchain - especially in regard to their customers funds and in Predictive Analytics (which is based today on AI.) So NO this is not buzzword bingo. I have no idea, honestly, what you mean by this, The stock market is a legitimate tool. People make and lose money every minute of every day. Why would you think BitCoin etc. is a Ponzi scheme? It is, I will grant you, a new method of currency, but it certainly does not work in the Ponzi rule of law. I am confused by this statement and have no clue what you mean by an "environmental disaster"? My whole point. It had better motivate them if they want to survive. you may be correct. I do not think LL has already lost, though if they do not improve and innovate swiftly, they certainly will. 10 Billion dollars is a lot to go up against. But LL is already positioned in certain areas and can use that positioning to disrupt the disruptor. But that is a whole diff.discussion. I do agree there are limited options here, most of which may lead to the demise of SL. Being bought out to be killed off, being ignored, becoming an old-age novelty (remember Palace Chat..in which a great deal of the roots of SL rest?) But I do not think the fight is over unless Rosedale et..al. think they are going to beat Zuckerberg at his own game. That would be disastrous. Thought I was clear, perhaps not. LL will never allow crypto according to its current way of working. Governments and Banks will be forced to allow crypto, sooner or later. Most look upon it as a currency stock-market where price fluctuates wildly. Since Govts. realize they cannot control it, and it does exist BIG TIME, then the only way to deal with it is to legitimize it so it can be taxed and regulated as all currencies are. In the part of the world where I live, Crypto is already being tested within R&D departments at Banks and so in BlockChain. I am again not sure why you think this is a Ponzi scheme, or has anything to do with the environment, but to each their own perspective. Have an awesome day
  11. Looking over this thread, and some of the comments, there really are three different technologies being discussed, and some seem to be combining them into one bucket. One has: Distributed Systems & Blockchain - these are not going away. They are incredibly versatile and important especially in AI development. Crypto Currencies - There are many here, and out in real who just push this aside. Govt. Regulations, inability to actually use it as we use CC's, money laundering, huge market fluctuations etc. and etc. (The fact that an exchange was hacked means nothing - Insurance companies and Hospitals are hacked all the time. Means you have to be incredibly careful with your Cyber Security.) NFT - Possibly something no one really needs. Possibly, as in all technologies in their infancy, something that has to grow and define valuable uses. The point is LL and SL can no longer ignore the Metaverse - nor the fundamental aspects at which the Metaverse will operate. Rosedale knows this and possibly why he did come back on - to avoid the "dystopia" and yet lead into a better user experience. However, SL as it stands, no matter how much one loves it, no matter how advanced one think it is, can either sit back and watch and really lose the entire market or get their act together. I do not see it as a "scam" if crypto would be accepted here. The problem is of course, LL demands exorbitant fees on any monetary exchange - from the cut they take on the MP, to buying and selling on the exchange which is owned, operated and controlled by them. Crypto would destroy their hold on the money market. That I do not think LL will ever allow. But they need to find a way to live with it, or at least start thinking about it. Once the Metaverse does catch up, and it will, sooner than most think, and LL is still where it is, then SL will slowly fade into oblivion. Distributed Systems & Blockchain are part of this - even if not used for Crypto and NFT. So maybe NFT's are not the way to go, and maybe many here see Crypto as a "scam" - i happen to know quite a few people who have made millions in Crypto..and when I say millions I do mean Millions in USD. Perhaps I am totally wrong, but I do not get why in SL we are always so resistant to the newer technologies (unless of course it is Mesh clothing!). I think LL needs a rethink, and a very deep and quick one at that. Cause they are right now in a place where Zuckerberg et.al. will pull one of his moves to buy them out and kill it off, or just target it. Second Life can be a metaverse leader and innovator. It has the infrastructure but it needs a lot of upgrading and change. Or it can even Disrupt the current Metaverse market with a bit of flair and solid thinking. I just remember the ludicrous situation which LL was in during the first year of Covid, where it had no land to sell. We are talking about virtual land here, not a townhouse on the Upper East Side in NYC. All the excuses of moving to the cloud etc.. and etc.. were beyond ludicrous, and points to a lack of vision which I hope Rosedale does something about. Again this MHO. I respect all those who disagree. But dissing BlockChain & Distributed Systems or just dismissing Crypto - well it is too late for that. NFT's may still find a use which is credible and legal. I would not dismiss that technology too fast as well. Though in ownership of the C/M/T system which exists a form of NFT does exist. Apologies for babbling. Have an Awesome Day!
  12. Silent Mistwalker - I do apologize. I did read what you wrote, word for word. I assume that the tips are the major source of "income" for the DJ's. However, I am also assuming it is done out of love of music and entertainment. Perhaps my wording was wrong. For that I do apologize.
  13. I enjoy and will continue to enjoy the responses. My point to the above statement, is that it is not the problem nor responsibility of the club visitor to make sure the DJ, Host or club are given recompense for what they are doing. A DJ does their work, ostensibly because they love music and are good entertainers. The club opened for whatever reasons they had. If one wishes to contribute to these endeavors, by way of tips, then all the power to them. Let them do so. However, no one has to hear about the fact that a DJ lives only on their tips. Who cares? It is, no matter how you look at it, IMHO, a form of begging-guilt tripping people. When I play Pink on Spotify, she gets a cut of the profits. Economics 101. (Anyone remember the Taylor Swift letter "Dear Apple" which managed to disrupt the whole industry and even the mighty Apple bent a knee.) In SL the DJ's do not have such a claim. They are simply streaming music. And yes, it is that simple. The point is - they choose to be DJ's. I choose to go the club. They have a Tip Jar out. That is enough. I want to tip, I will. I don't want to tip, I really do not need to hear about tipping every 5 minutes. It turns what could be a nice time and great experience for SL time into an endless stream of begging-host hud messages-reminders - all destroying the very experience a club wants to create. And yes, to the others who mentioned this, people have been complaining about this behavior for years. No doubt about it. I just think it has reached new and obnoxious levels. That was all. As to the individual who called the post - "whining" - she is entitled to her opinion and entitled to be respected for her opinion. My answer to the whining comment is simply - "Whatever".
  14. At the outset I am well aware that many here will disagree with me, some vehemently. This is your right to do so and I respect it. Having been in SL for many years, as a designer and scripter, for the past few years I have decided to follow my real love of music and dancing within SL. There are some very good clubs and DJ's out there and some really horrible ones. This is obviously a matter of music taste. However, since I am kind of a music freak and love SL dancing on my huds with my dance sequences, I visit clubs fairly often. When one does not like the DJ or the music you just TP out. It is simple, easy and that is that. (And i will say if the DJ's voice is not pleasing, it may be a good idea for the DJ not to talk at all and just use chat.) Now, with all that being said, there has become an incredibly annoying habit and absolute turn-off at many of the clubs where the following is done: DJ's remind people to tip the host and venue every other set of music (1,2,3 songs). Hosts remind people to tip the DJ and venue every 5 minutes. Automated Messages go out every 10-15 minutes reminding people to tip. "Help keep the lights on" has become a favorite line in almost all clubs. DJ's telling people all they work for is Tips, is called "panhandling" in the real world and it is just that. And this line is often used at many clubs. It has come to the point where all this is becoming ludicrous. I see nothing wrong with putting out tip jars and signs. That should be enough for people. Those who will tip - will do it. Those who will not tip, won't. Simple as all that. I have spoken to quite a few long-time friends in SL and I was surprised that they, almost all (will say 99%), agreed with me. As time goes on the situation is becoming impossible and also irksome to the extreme. Though you may not be aware of this - DJ's, Hosts & Club Owners - people TP away just because of this incessant begging! Let us be clear here - and possibly brutal: Club Owners: Club owners - The cost of running your club is something you have taken on. This should have been calculated into your expenses. A designer who cannot sell clothing, closes down. A scripter who cannot sell their objects, closes. A builder from whom no one buys - closes. Or they stay open because they love doing it - no matter what losses they incur. Why are clubs different? Nothing legitimizes begging people to contribute to a club. And I will add most clubs in SL have seem to have gone into the "land business" as well. If you cannot make it - if your expenses are too much - then close. I once discussed this with a club owner. So I said to them "If you want to take money from people - then charge them to come in. Use a 24 hours pass (easily scripted), a huge group charge or whatever method you want." (I was obviously goading them into the answer I expected.) This came immediately: "If you charge people - no one will come." VOILA!!! So what is the genius work-around? Drive people crazy "begging" or trying to "guilt" them into tipping every 10 minutes? One other small point. A lot of lag in clubs is due to the incredible amount of scripted signs and objects dedicated to begging for tips. DJ's: No one is forcing. you to DJ. No one in SL is putting a gun to your head. If you want to DJ, then go for it. But that does not mean the public is expected to pay for your desire to DJ. Put out a tip jar (or use the clubs tip jar). If you cannot resist the urge, then mention it once or twice in a 2-hour set. No more. Telling people to also tip the host and venue - again that is just not only ludicrous - it is annoying as hell. A DJ has a computer system with their songs, usually a Stream, the SAM (as it is known) and that is that. I hate to say this so brutally, but it does not take a PhD to run these systems. DJ's by themselves have ample time to do all the hosting, greeting, playing that is needed. But such systems cost money! Yes the do! So figure out if you can afford it before you begin. Don't rely on avatars to pay for your desire to DJ. Hosts: I am not sure why, how, or when "hosts" became mandatory. However, I do understand many will disagree with the above point. So the Hosts are there - everywhere. Which in essence of the "panhandling" system doubles a tip once a visitor is guilted into it. It is a hidden "cover charge" if you want to put it into real terms. Hosts greet, make jokes (if they can), and dance. They try to keep conversations going. Wonderful! Until the 5-10 limit comes up and the begging for tips starts. Venue and DJ. "This DJ is working very hard for all of you....etc." "This club is the best! Help us stay open and keep the lights on!" Sound familiar? Bottom Line: I tip only when I have come to know a DJ and/or Host and like their music and presentation. I, nor anyone else, needs to be reminded every 5 minutes to tip, or that someone is "working hard" or that "the lights need to be kept on" or that "you are only working for tips." Does a waiter come up to you in a restaurant, hands you the menu, and says, "Before I take your orders, please remember I am only working for tips."? Under no conditions will I tip a venue. That is their choice, their responsibility, their expenses. If they are renting out land or other things, it makes it even more ludicrous. Maybe a course in Excel and rudimentary costs and expenses will help all the club owners - since what they want is to be on the top of the "numbers list" which they want me to pay for. It is legitimate to "charge" for entertainment. But you know if you do so in SL, no one will pay. That should have been a consideration before you opened up your club. Please Stop: Stop the never-ending begging for tips (and it is begging.) Stop the lines about "keeping the lights on" and "I only work for tips". Stop the incessant automated messages sent to chat by a scripted message system for people to tip. Stop the mentions of how hard you are working. Most of the people listening work very hard for their money as well. Please Do This: Put out your tip jars. Mention them once or twice in a normal 2-hour set (if you feel you absolutely must do so). Do not make them part of your normal conversations. Hosts, do the same, since hosts are now a mainstay, and I doubt an argument for eliminating them will do any good. Get rid of the "help keep the lights on" line or anything like it. It truly is disgusting and annoying. Work hard, supply good music and people will tip you just as much without TP'ing away because they are just disgusted with the "panhandling." Yes this is my rant after 13 years in SL. I love some of the clubs I visit. I love certain dance creators and very specific dance huds. Some DJ's are excellent. Some are horrible. Your choice. Your taste. But no one should be subjected to this constant panhandling or begging so often. It makes one just stay away from those clubs, and possibly SL in general. --End of Rant--
