I can't believe I am the only merchant in SL who is in a similar situation. No, you're not alone. I always said I would keep a premium account so long as the cost per value remained static, but this really rips the value of out of the SL experience for me. Thank you for your response and understanding, Anaiya. My MP sales are what allowed me to participate in other aspects of SL without having to put any RL funds into it. Once other merchants who are not yet aware of this proposed change hear of it or worse, stop getting MP sales and investigate what happened, perhaps LL will reconsider this phasing out time frame.
  2. Thank you so much for your kind words, the link to the refurbished Dells, and the hug. *smiles* As I responded to Mickey, I'm definitely not giving up and I don't feel sorry for myself in any way and hope my post didn't come off like that. Just a bit frustrating to be put out of biz. In RL our family has recently experienced two life-changing situations which could have literally been "life or death." Fortunately in both cases the people involved are alive, one is in recovery from surgery as we speak but has a long road of physical therapy rehab ahead of her. I said that to agree with you that life, RL/online, will throw us curveballs we cannot avoid. How we respond is the crucial point. (Didn't mean to get all philosophical, but your post reminded me to be thankful for each day. *smiles*)

A long-time, very successful merchant friend of mine commented on this in a recent conversation saying she was surprised that LL would do something that negated the necessity of owning/renting land, if for no other reason than to host the Magic Box. The DD system may be more streamlined/beneficial in some ways, but her comment got me thinking and wondering if something else is up the road. With so much unsold land, as far as I can tell, this is a bit curious on this point alone.

Deal is, unless all of the others get an official email, they are not going to know, so you might not hear about that here. An option for you, would be to hook up with someone who has similar line, and sell your items under their brand, with a split between the two of you. Gradually, some more options will come in what to do with the old viewer problem, maybe, as people discover there is a glitch with that. But don't throw your hands up just yet, you've got good stuff to sell. Hi Mickey - great to see you again! I'm definitely not giving up, just concerned what will happen to my items. For example, the current rules are if one delists an item, it cannot be relisted. If I have to take my items down for now, or if they get poofed into the ether when the Magic Boxes are gone, my main concern is being able to relist them if/when I am able to get a new PC. I just submitted a ticket to LL to inquire of this. Thank you for your kind comments on my items. *smiles* I appreciate your idea as well - I do have a friend who may be willing to work with me on that as a temporary workaround. We've been through a myriad of other LL changes over the years, so I'm sure we'll get through this one.

I hope your buyers have had your support even if you've been out of SL An store in SL is much more than to have a Magic Box and forget everything else g else that should offer a marchant Most definitely. When I say I have not been in SL much for awhile, I mean for hours daily to socialize. I have an in-world shop I keep tabs on, although 99% of my sales are from the MP. Customer service is extremely important to me. One of my profile picks as well as info provided with my items emphasizes to contact me for ANY reason re: one of my products and if I do not respond within 48 hours, please resend as that means I did not receive their communication. Since I began my business, I would estimate maybe a total of 10 customers contacted me: several requesting custom work on one of the items, a handful who needed help sizing my curtains to fit their windows, etc. My response time was generally within 2 hours or less. Also, even though I clearly indicated in store and in the MP descriptions that certain of my items had copy permissions, some customers were either new and didn't understand permissions or they would accidentally click the vendor more than once in store and end up with multiple versions of a copy item. Not one of these customers contacted me, but when I received the email notification and saw this happening, I contacted the customers and refunded their money for the extra copies. I had a lot of positive feedback from my customers saying I was the first merchant who ever did this voluntarily and even merchants they did contact either didn't get back to them or promised to make an issue right, and never did. So, yes - regardless of personal time spent in SL, I make sure to take care of my customers.
  7. Benski Trenkins wrote: Oops I found out that phoenix only supports received items folder. Not the merchant outbox. What you might be able to do: get a compatible viewer, run it under minimum settings, just to use the outbox. Thanks, Benski The trouble I've been running into with the compatible viewers is once I download/install it, I get an error message that won't permit me to even log in with one of the SSE2-compatible viewers. I've tried both the 32 and 64-bit versions of Firestorm. The current SL viewer and Exodus viewers pop up a message when I try to install them that my system does not run SSE2 and will not run these viewers - do I want to install anyway. When I said yes...still can't open them. I checked to see if I could dl one of the SL 2.x viewers and they all said not able to be downloaded. So, for now - continuation with Magic Box will be my option. A merchant friend of mine did make an interesting observation - with the advent of the DD system, thus no actual need for an in-world store nor even a place to put the Magic Box - would this not affect possible land sales/rentals? Thank you for your helpful and polite response - I do appreciate it. *smiles*
  8. Thanks, Sassy. I've been gone from SL for a time, so I'm just catching up on things. Apparently a LOT has changed.
  9. I appreciate you responding, Marcus. I will be opting for the Magic Box option as long as I can regardless of PC/viewer capability. I am currently using the Phoenix viewer on a non-SSE2 PC. Once I saw that the Magic Box will still be operational for the time being I wasn't as concerned for the present. I'm still wondering if, for example, I did use the DD system but some customers did not/could not use the newer viewers if they would be able to receive the purchases. I suppose we'll find these things out as we go along. As for: Technology marches on, Czari. You know that. Of course I do; however unfortunately a fixed income does not march on as quickly. I used to teach computer software applications in a Jr. College when the first PC clones came out - DOS and one 5 1/4" floppy drive. I saw a lot of changes during my tenure there. Trust me, if I could have afforded a newer computer in recent years I would have updated mine, probably a few times over. I don't expect LL or technology to stop for me, that wasn't the point of my OP; I'm just looking at what my options will be down the road re: being a SL merchant, or at some point even being on SL. But I expect there is still a good amount of time before that happens yet. *smiles*
  10. I've been searching this forum for an answer to this question but I may not have looked deeply enough so I will just ask outright: Will using the DD system necessitate using one of the newer viewers that only run on SSE2 processors? For another SL matter I just tried to run the current SL 3.0 viewer as well as the Exodus viewer; neither would work on my older PC. I didn't even try Firestorm as I assume that will be the case as well. I am pleased to read that the DD system will exist in tandem with the Magic Boxes for a time, therefore I assume (which can be dangerous) that my products can still be delivered via Magic Box using a 1.x version viewer, for now at least. Thank you for any insight on this matter.
  11. I firmly believe that if I post re: a negative experience concerning my dealings with LL, then I should also post positive experiences. At the time of my previous posts above, I was getting frustrated as much about being told to "Check the Wiki" after other steps had been tried as I was about the missing inventory. However, I continued to reply professionally to the LL representative who was handling my support case ticket. Shortly thereafter, I received an email from Izzy Linden stating she/he (?) had run a fix on my inventory and gave instructions on how to proceed. I was very hopeful to now have a Linden handling this issue. Unfortunately the fix did not work which I related back to Izzy. This morning I received a reply from Izzy Linden saying the frustration at my inventory loss was understandable but at this point all attempts have been tried and unfortunately my lost inventory cannot be recovered. Per my comments to Oskar Linden above, I understand that this can sometimes happen and I would rather be told that than a continual loop of try this-try that. I want to heartily thank Izzy Linden for stepping into this case and telling me straight up. I also want to note that Izzy went what I consider above and beyond to take the "sting" out of losing the inventory in a manner that has GREATLY restored my confidence in how the Lindens are now handling resident/customer issues. This type of customer service goes a very long way in demonstrating that LL does consider their customer base. Thank you again, Izzy! :matte-motes-big-grin:
  12. Oskar Linden wrote: Void Singer is right. This issue was unrelated to this mornings update to the simulator code. The centrals services that do all the region coordinating and communicating to things like the asset servers started failing. I appreciate everyone's passion for Second Life and I know how much this place means to you. When it comes to reporting issues like this raw emotion doesn't help us. I don't need to know how much L$ your inventory is worth. Telling me how upset you are won't help us diagnose the issues. What really helps is a calm description of the steps you have done to reproduce an issue with specific information about where the bugs are occurring. This means going to Help -> About Second Life and including server and viewer versions in your report. __Oskar Oskar, I agree with you here; however, at least speaking for me, residents get a bit frustrated when they do contact Live Chat and/or submit a ticket and get the runaround. In my case, after discovering that I lost an entire folder of clothing (approximately 247 items), I first tried all the Wiki suggestions to retrieve lost inventory. I then submitted a ticket that was extremely detailed. When I later found a list of questions to answer that would help LL help me more effectively, I answered and added them to my case ticket. I had not received a response from my ticket at that point. A few days later I contacted Live Chat. The representative was friendly and helpful, looked into my inventory and did not see any of my lost items. I was advised to file a ticket (which I had). Shortly thereafter I received the first response to my ticket instructing me to first do a clean install of SL, pointing me to a website with instructions on how to do this. I was very happy to see this advice instead of the rote "Go to the Wiki" that is usually the first response I have had on any ticket filed in the past 4 years. Unfortunately, my inventory was not recovered. I was at the point that I pretty much figured the inventory was gone for good after speaking to Live Chat and doing the clean install of the SL viewer. Ok, things happen. I was disappointed, but not upset and was planning to begin contacting the designers of my lost inventory, explain the issue, and see if they have a replacement policy or repurchase the items. Then I received a response to my reply that the clean install did not work which said to read the Wiki and answer the same list of questions that were a part of my case ticket. If I had not done either of those things, ok...but I had read the Wiki and done everything it said as well as previously answering the questions which can be found on my case ticket. That is when I got a tad upset. If the inventory cannot be restored due to whatever technical issue occurred, I'd much rather be told that than be sent on a bunny trail. If you (LL) have any further suggestions that have not already been suggested and tried, I would glady love to try anything to retrieve my inventory. If not, I, like I suspect other residents, would just like to know nothing further can be done - that is what causes some of the upset and "whining."

  14. Stevie Nikita wrote: Your inventory is not 'gone' ~ you are ok, the asset servers are not connecting properly, LL is working on the issue but for now you will not be able to carry prims you were not wearing prior to the loss of connection with your specific asset server. If you tp away from the last point of contact you will lose any prim you wearing until you tp back to that area. This is very temporary, annoying but not tragic. Unfortunately, in my case, an entire folder of clothes (at least 247 items) are gone. Even worse, it is the clothing I wear 99% of the time. I have done everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) to try to restore the inventory that I already knew from 4 years on SL, everything in the Wiki, loaded v2 because I was told that viewer deals with inventory a bit differently, deleted cache in preferences and manually multiple times, submitted a ticket and talked to Live Chat. According to Live Chat, the lost items could not be seen in my inventory by her at all. She said it is a technical issue and to file a ticket (which I'd already done with no reply at that time) and "hoped" they would be able to restore my inventory. When I did receive a response from my ticket, I was told to do a clean install of SL, which included first uninstalling *all* viewers on my PC. I followed the instructions meticulously - no restored inventory. Reported this back to the LL employee who had issued these instructions and received the typical canned response to go to the Wiki re: lost inventory and do everything listed, which I had already done AND noted in my original ticket. I was also told if that didn't work to answer a list of questions included - which I had ALSO already done. Do these employees even READ a ticket before replying or do they not want to say "Your inventory is gone due to some technical glitch on our part" and keep suggesting things that have already been done? I replied to that ticket that I HAD already done everything in the Wiki, even prior to filing a ticket, AND the questions listed were also already answered and gave the location on my case file where they could be found. Have not heard anything since that. The frustrating thing is, I had backups of all these items in a box, but the box was in the same folder that was zapped so it is gone too. A few years ago, due to reading about regular inventory losses, I kept copies of my favorite items archived in world. One day, during a period that the physics engine was being updated or something similar, items began disappearing from my house, including the archived inventory boxes. At that time when I spoke to LL, I was told that since the items were stored in world, there was nothing they could do (I live on Mainland so I could not request a sim rollback from an Estate Manager) but if it had been in my inventory, they could have recovered it. ARGGGGGGGHHHH!!! Ok, now items were lost from inventory and I'm still getting the run around.
  15. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed, but since the representative I spoke to on Live Chat said she could not see the items in inventory, my hopes are dwindling. But one never knows. Thank you again
  16. THANK YOU, Argus I was just trying to go back to Xstreet where there are calendars to go back many years, but in using that I got no results. Using your URL I found EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Thank you again for this instance and in future instances when I may have to search for past purchases!!
  17. Although I am a merchant, this question concerns a purchase I made. I recently lost over 100 items from my inventory. After clearing cache manually and from preferences many times/resetting my modem, etc., contacting Live Chat and submitting a ticket, it appears my inventory will likely not be recovered. I am now going through the process of contacting the merchants from whom I purchased the lost items for possible replacements. Several of the items were purchased in 2009. In looking through my purchases in The Marketplace it only goes back to early 2010. Is there any way to go farther back to search for purchased items online? Thank you for any assistance with this matter.

Very good point, wiked. Due to having an older computer I keep my draw distance at anywhere from 24-96 so I don't see things until I'm right on top of them. Land buyers want to buy as low as possible so it's not surprising they will use "ugly builds," etc. to try to devalue the property. Thank you for reminding me of ths. *smiles*
  19. davidventer wrote: It is however unfortunate that Linden Lab does not send out reminders about this matter close to the renewal/expiry date but it is stated in the initial billing agreement that it is a continuous agreement and that the same payment method on file will be used for future billing cycles unless you downgrade to basic beforehand. (not in those exact words but they do mention a recurring agreement). LL does send out reminders. My Premium account is up for renewal on May 10 and I received two separate reminders via email, the first in mid-April. I'm not positive about this re: Premium account renewals, but to get any other correspondence from LL you must indicate you wish to do so. The SL website layout has changed several times since I first began SL 4 years ago and I checked someplace on the one at the time I joined that I wished to receive emails from LL so that information has apparently remained as the website layout changes. I recently saw an area in the Dashboard under Contact Information that says "I would like to receive offline IMs via Email" that is unchecked by default. That sounds like the same option that can be chosen within Preferences in world re: receiving in world IMs via email. At any rate, I receive emails from time to time from LL and some of my friends say they don't so there is some place to indicate that one wants to receive emails. Another thing after indicating you wish to receive LL emails is to change the contact information if you change your email account. I know that sounds obvious, but in the past I've forgotten to do that and don't think about it until I happen to run across the former email somewhere on this or another website. One of my friends could not afford to pay his Premium account about 6 months ago. He thought he would be able to get the money a week or so after the Premium expired so he called LL to tell them. I can't recall all the details, but, at my urging, he downgraded to basic and thereby lost the LL house he had - he never did pay to continue the Premium and I think called LL again to let them know he had downgraded to basic so, even though his Premium had expired and was two weeks past due, he did not lose his account. @SoonerGlass - I am so very sorry to hear this happened to you. I read a similar account on the forums a year or so ago and one poster said that he made an alt account just to be the Premium account holder, purchased no inventory at all for that account, and formed a group with his main avatar and the alt, giving his main owner rights.
  20. Hi Darren...I did sell the 1024 to a land buyer for around .097 (approximately). For now I've decided to keep the 512. Search doesn't work well (or at all) in v2????? *Adds another reason not to use it*
  21. MARI!!!! So great to see you again!!!! As you know, I love Mainland as well and have lived on it for my entire four years in SL. (Just celebrated my 4th Rezday on May 1. It sure doesn't seem that long!) I'm partial to water sims and have lived on my current sim for the last 3 1/2 years. My experience with Mainland is a bit different because I prefer to live in the sky so whatever is below me, although I would like it to look nice, doesn't overly bother me. To Sinful - Mainland is interesting. There are the areas you mentioned that are a bunch of cluttered junk, but then other places that have the look of a regulated Estate. In addition to places like Bay City and Nautilus, some of the original Mainland sims are wonderful. Mari can help me out with some of the names - I'm thinking of places like Blumfield (one of my personal favorites), Boardman and others on the Old Continent. They are neighborhoods with streets, sidewalks, etc. Now there is some expensive Mainland property, if any is ever available. I check Blumfield every so often but have never been able to afford even a 512 there. The other thing about Mainland is that on many sims it is ever changing. When I first moved to my sim the entire ground level looked like one huge flea market. I'm not kidding!! Untextured flat prims littered with...stuff. Again, making my home in the sky, I didn't come down to see it often. Over time, however, the sim began evolving and most of it now has some really nice builds that keep within a general theme. There is also the flip side of having someone buy a parcel next to yours and either building or ummmm...doing something...odd. Mari has had that happen before as well. The good part is that *usually* the really bizarre type neighbors seem to not stay long. It basically boils down to people preferring either Mainland or Estate living. There is one Estate in particular I always said I would love to live in, and may still, but when the opportunity arose recently, I couldn't bring myself to give up my little 512 sqm on mainland; I suppose due to longevity on the sim, having some of the same neighbors for 3 years and nostalgia. At present I can't afford to live there and have another home on an Estate. Oh and Mari is a PERFECT example of using creativity to build something unique and wonderful, even with the presence of what some would have called a deterrent. If you get a chance, check out her cute shop in Bay City. (EDITED to remove the name of the store due to the new LL Community Standards I just read.) I didn't know I'd get so much feedback on my original question. I appreciate everyone who has participated. And I love hearing input from "new eyes" like you, Sinful. I hope you enjoy exploring SL and have a wonderful time.
  22. Pussycat Catnap wrote: if you're thinking Blue Mars I wouldn't take them so seriously anymore... ...But if there's somebody else now, that would warrant concern. The idea behind a competitor to SL should in theory be very easy, but as yet it hasn't happened. Even if it does, it'll face the innertia problem. Everyone's already over here with all their loot. So the customer base has to be 'enough people not currently using VW's to make those of us currently in them insignificant'. (And I'm not talking about my Jetta either. ) No, neither of the two virtual worlds you mentioned. I guess it's ok to name other worlds on this forum (or our posts will be pulled if it isn't). I was referring to InWorldz. It went from 1,000 residents to 4,000 in about two weeks after the April 2010 LL change of TOS I mentioned and has been increasing ever since. I wander over to visit friends maybe once every two months or so...population is over 10,000 now...maybe more. Still not the numbers LL has, but the merchants with whom I talk seem to love it (and some "big name" merchants are there - most still have their businesses in SL as well). New residents and/or those new to virtual worlds seem to love it as well. One of the things it currently offers is a more personal welcome to newly arriving residents. At least one and usually several Greeters (I think they may be called something else) are at the "rez in" point to greet new people. They immediately help the avatar "denoobify" and take him to the freebie shops nearby. Not sure how long this personal touch will be able to last as the population grows, but many mention the overall "friendliness" and "personal touch" as attributes they enjoy in IW. It just isn't "me" for some reason, besides the lack of a graphics engine and scripts/animations sometimes working/sometimes not. I was even given a shop free of charge by a very nice man who owns two sims when I first went over. However, most of my items are scripted and didn't "translate" well, plus I'm not one that can keep a lot of plates in the air at one time. That's the only other virtual world I've seen besides SL (unless I count a few weeks when Active World first began...I was in the free Beta for that and didn't like it). A friend told me there is a new virtual world called Avination that he enjoys and is growing quickly as well. A quick glance at their website indicated a sim price beginning at $60.00 USD as well. As for me...I'll stay in SL with my accumulated inventory, friends, and activities I enjoy.
  23. Chaos Mohr wrote: It is probably LL's intention to drive the market as low as possible, they stopped making any real money on Mainland when due to their own mismanagement, they overloaded the mainland market by overproducing sims for auction. I remember the days when new mainland sims could fetch $3000 USD and up at auction There is another outside factor in the land prices besides LL - the competition of at least one (and there are others as well; I'm just familiar with this one) relatively new virtual world (not going to name it for a number of reasons). Just in my little circle of friends and acquaintances and especially among the merchants in the group, a great majority have, at minimum, set up their business "over there" as well as keeping it in SL and several have left SL altogether, preferring the new world. I spent a bit of time there when it had its first "boom" influx from SL in April 2010 just prior to SL changing the TOS re: taking items out of world that were not 100% made by the owner (ie. no taking full perm items - textures, sculpties, etc. that a builder purchased) out of SL. I also met many people who were coming into a virtual world for the first time...there; when SL used to be the only game in town. I personally still prefer SL for a lot of reasons. The other world is still basically beta or even pre-beta, no real graphics engine and a lot of funky things that drive me nuts, but the big draw for merchants and those who enjoy owning a lot of land is the attraction of complete sims beginning at $60.00 USD with a bazillion prims. Many of my friends/merchants closed stores in SL entirely and are over there or spend most of their time there. That put a LOT of land on the SL market in one fell swoop last year with more being dumped as other people decide to make their main virtual home there. Add in the RL economy, at least in the U.S., plus the LL decisions mentioned and no wonder land prices are at the lowest I've seen for 4 years. (My rez day was May 1 :smileyhappy:)

He has it marked for resale at 3.5 sqm. (Did I already say that in a previous post? Sorry...just woke up and not thinking as clearly yet. :smileyindifferent: ) What is "beta land?" I just read the new abandoned land policy. It used to take forever to get abandoned land back on the market...this should be interesting. 25. Pussycat Catnap wrote: Normally I find you get most in a similar price range and then some nut that has land for sale at a very unrealistic price. I agree its a not always the best guide, especially if there aren`t enough for sale to compare, but if you look around at average prices for say "fairly flat grass plots, one step back from the ocean with good views" it is better than trying to compare from the total land search for plots of the same size, where you are comparing to steep rocky crags or snow plots etc. I fall into the "some nut that has land for sale at a very unrealistic price" category on my sim. I mentioned above that the only other land on my sim is a 1024 going for 24.0 sqm and three 512's all next to each other for 26.0 sqm. The 512's face a Linden ocean on one side and over time these parcels have sold, resold, been joined into one larger parcel, re-subdivided, etc. (I have lived on this sim for over three years.) I checked out those 512's at one time, but even though they do face a Linden ocean, they are so close to the land on the sim located perpendicular to it that it is not an unobstructed view. I can't figure out the reasoning for the unrealistic price on the 1024 at 24.0 sqm. It is smack in the middle of the sim. Currently the neighboring parcels have nice builds on them, but that could always change. The parcel itself has a big rock on it with a lighthouse perched on the rock and then waves all around it which would look nice on the edge of a sim, but looks a bit odd in the middle of homes. Underwater the owner has done a really nice job of making an underwater "retreat" with lovely sea coral, foliage, fish, etc. BUT, the parcel price does *not* include the objects on it. During the three years I've been on this sim, at any given time at least 1/4 if not more of the sim was for sale and even during years when land prices were higher, the average price was 4L - 7L per sqm, sometimes closer to 3.5. Over the past year, except for the above-mentioned over-priced parcels, there has been nothing for sale on the sim. I grabbed the 1024 when it came up for sale because I was so suprised to see a parcel for sale at all, plus being adjacent to mine I had planned to be able to expand my home a bit. I made this decision at about 6 am after staying up all night and not thinking real clearly. :smileyindifferent: The tier isn't much, but I have decided not to renew my Premium account when it comes due in a couple of weeks and I, like many, am trying to economize RL. SL expenditures with USD is currently in my "luxury" category. I said all that to say I do agree that comparing parcels within a sim is a better indicator than a dissimilar parcel on another sim. Unfortunately on my sim I didn't have a good comparison. I did sell the 1024 for $1,000 to the land buyer. I will be interested to watch what he prices it at and how long it takes to sell. I may go month to month on Premium to see if I can get a better price on the 512. Another question - Do land buyers tend to offer approximately the same amount for a given parcel. Many thanks again for your responses and input.
