  1. I'd post a thread on here asking you all to look through mine and see if you can find (list of items I know I have, or at least had, but now can't find in the disorganised HEAP that is my inventory)
  2. Except the "adult section" is NOT all about sex all the time.. There's a photography thread that is full of incredibly artistic shots that can't be posted outside the adult section because well, nipples, mostly. (the occasional dangly bit but mostly nipples) - but there's pictures that wouldnt be out of place in a mainstream RL art gallery, but the rules say that's the only place they can be posted in the SL forums. There's philosophical discussions about the nature of relationships, that have to stay there because of the kink. It's NOT wall to wall pixel-bumping
  3. oh, and just FYI, since I'm pretty much comprehensively out as Seicher's other half at this point - I aint goin' nowhere. So she aint really gone, I'll tell her about anything interesting that happens
  4. To me, the forums are important. More important than you'd think given my posting frequency. Inworld, I meet people (unless I'm in hermit-mode in my workshop) I get to know the regulars at my music sets, I talk to other inworld musicians, other folks that are part of communities that I am already a part of. The forums are a place to meet and interact with people outside that bubble, to discover new possibilities to later look into (or avoid like the plague, lol) inworld and maybe make that bubble a little larger. It's an out-of-band, out-of-character spot where creators with differing interests and skill sets can occasionally brainstorm something when they would never have met or even been aware of each other's existences inworld because of that diversity in their interests, in the areas in which they apply their creativity. And the "general discussion" area(s) - peeves and all - are central to that.
  5. Thats a REAL interesting take on Queen Mab's habit of turning folks to stone and arranging them in her garden (it is usually a bad idea to peeve the queen of the unseelie court)
  6. That's the EASY bit. You haven't even started dealing with the weird bits like the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
  7. No, I will NOT be decorating for Hallowe'en, the eve before All Hallows. I might be decorating for Samhain, though.
  8. The effect is actually the other way round. loading each LOD model happens ONLY when the distance from model to camera crosses the LOD thresholds. The calculations for rendering the hundreds of objects around your camera happen every frame anyway. If every model at every LOD was high-poly the graphics card would still render every tri of it, even if the size of the model on the screen was only a couple of dozen pixels across and you couldn't see the detail with a microscope. Proper LODing of the model before you upload it makes it less laggy - not just for you but for everyone else that can "see" it inworld because you and they are not wasting CPU and GPU cycles rendering detail that is too small for even the highest-resolution screen to show.
  9. in fairness, the anti-peeves were successful resolutions to previously posted peeves So could theoretically fit on the grounds of "Oh Hell. These are fixed. Now I'm peeved that I've got nothing to grumble about... oh, wait...."
  10. How the F did we get from a sensible discussion of LOD levels in objects, LOD settings in the viewer and how they interact to dramallama-ing about system capacity? Back in the day when I built out large data centers, a system was considered "at full capacity" if it typically ran at 80% load, bursting to 100% from time to time - you didnt want the service to crater during those bursts so you kept a little headroom. I've never seen the reason to treat my own electronics any more harshly than those I was paid a salary to attend their care and feeding. YMMV, You do you, yadda yadda yadda
  11. Yup. And they are a perfect illustration of how "well" such BS works. I remember sitting there with a hex bit and a three cornered file MAKING a torx bit before they were readily available ETA: Do NOT place needless obstacles in the path of an engineer. You will lose.
  12. or the ONE size of torx bit you don't have in your toolbox (you know, the one you SWORE you had but turns out that if you ever did it must have evaporated or something)
  13. peeve: rework avatar (le sigh, I am become YAJ - Yet Another Jake), get semi-decent results. Become intimately familiar with the "Buy L$" button reworking the wardrobe. I know, I know, I'm a guy so all I should need is a couple pairs of jeans and an endless selection of black t-shirts. But there are some outfits I always have to have. And then there's the one thing that ALWAYS peeves me when shopping for Highland formal. NOBODY makes a proper kilt in SL. Every last one out there gets something fundamental wrong. Mostly they are wrapped wrong, none of them have a properly pleated back. An endless progression of "kilt-like objects", three quarters of them built on the same two full-perm templates, baking these fundamental errors into the marketplace. 😠
  14. I followed him onto the stage at Cafe Musique every other Thursday. We talked a lot, musical banter and mutual appreciation of our very different musical styles. A lot of snark at the world and at the actual realities of being a musician, in SL and elsewhere. A truly gifted artist, composer and performer. With a wickedly pointed sense of humour. When I heard of his passing it was like a punch in the gut. I'd banter with Flora during his sets. Such a fine talent and beautiful person, lost too soon.
  15. yep, as @Nalates Urriahsaid, my post was an oversimplification because attachments are a bit of a special case, but that's the (slightly tongue in cheek) gist of the post being asked about. Just because something looks good to you at the creators "suggested LOD" doesn't mean your lovingly created look, or scene, or landscape, will look that way to anyone else with a different LOD setting.
  16. You have your LOD level in the viewer set to 4. You will see the high-poly models for a much greater distance than others will. You have believed the creator and set a high LOD value in the viewer "to see the item at its best" The items where the creator said that are your hair and clothes.... Along comes somebody else with THEIR viewer set to 1.25, the default in the official viewer. To THEM, your hair and your clothing has collapsed into a few tris because it wasn't made with good LOD models, but your body hasn't collapsed because either it's "mole mesh" with high poly models in every LOD or it was actually designed well. They will see you naked and bald until really close in to you.
  17. Techies and creators tend to mean different thing by "strong LOD" As a techie, what it means to me is that the LOD models were crafted well and the item appears acceptable at whatever distance it is viewed from, without rendering tris that are irrelevant to the size of the object on-screen, without collapsing into disordered triangles and without undue "popping" as the object is approached and a higher LOD rendered. Because I'm a techie I try real hard to create that way. To far too many creators it means making mole mesh, where they select "use LOD above" twice and then generate the lowest LOD at a tri limit of 0 to try and cheat the LI calculation. The ONE place where zero-ing out the lowest LOD is acceptable is an interior setting where the object cannot be seen at a distance sufficiently far to make it render at lowest LOD with the default viewer LOD set. By the time it collapses into two or three random tris, there's a wall between you and it.
  18. Peeve. Awake too frickin' early. Peeve squared. Staring around my place looking for things I need to tidy up before my mother visits for the weekend. You'd think that with more than half a century of mileage on this body I'd be SO over that at this point, but no. I can almost feel her pulling on the white gloves to check for dust.
  19. The short answer is I wouldn't because I wouldn't have it. After consolidating and downsizing I'm currently at a max holding of 1/8 region + my existing 1024 and I have it maxed. The hassle of finding an extra 1024 on the same sim (without an insane price) to up my prim count, which would be the only tangible benefit I'd get from going plus, isn't worth it for me at the price. There is an adjacent parcel I'd WANT to buy, but it's bigger than 1024 so my tier would go to the next level anyway ETA - because nobody has said it on the forums in WAY too long: "THE TIER IS TOO D*MN HIGH!" - *smirks at the mole-mods, swiftly ducks, and runs away cackling insanely*
