I'm surprised no-one has thought of that. They'd need a way to market it too to get people interested I guess. I suppose it would be relatively easy to market with a few banners thrust in people's faces though. It could even help people get traffic to their land. Except, of course, traffic is irrelevant to search ranking now and traffic gaming is also banned. :smileyindifferent: (Ok, i'll stop now because I feel naughty and slightly trollish, but I couldn't resist!)
  2. A cynic might say this, and your other random questions, are a blatant attempt to get your signature banner all over the forums: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Role-Play/Becoming-a-slave/m-p/961053 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Your-Avatar/Why-is-it-not-acceptable-to-walk-around-naked/m-p/961035 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Merchants/What-is-the-best-business-model-in-SL/m-p/961027 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Fashion/Why-are-is-there-no-businesswear-available/m-p/961063 I'm not a cynic though, so I'd never say such a thing. :smileyindifferent:

I could eat it all day, every day. However, that would be bad and would probably kill me. Hey! Turns out this trolling lark can be quite fun! :matte-motes-shocked:
  4. I think Pussycat meant the mistake was in using the drama pit that is SLU where this sort of nonsense goes on all the time.
  5. Heard about this yesterday and, as I said to a friend at the time, it's guaranteed to stir up some "So, now there is nothing to stop minors accessing adult content" drama. Fact of the matter is though it's not going to make any difference at all. As others have said here, the new process is no better or worse than the previous aristotle verification system, or having CC info on file. Both those previous methods were flakey at best and did little to stop someone providing fake information if they wanted to. There is no sure fire way of verifying age over the internet without seeing official documentation in person. It's a problem faced by various internet sites every day and most know that the best they can do is to offer a "Confirm you are over 18" disclaimer. Trying to engineer complex verification processes above that are just a waste of resources as they can be easily cicumvented with false information. LL have set the grounds over the last couple of years for ensuring that, to the best of their ability, a minor can only access adult content if they lie, while at the same time 16-17 year olds can enjoy SL in a PG manner. It took them a while to get everything right, but I personally think they do have it as close to 'right' as is feasible now (separated adult content, 16 and 17 year olds restricted to PG and a straightforward age 'verification' process). They need to stay vigilant, but they are doing the best they can within the bounds of the available technology to ensure a fiar balance between and inclusive SL and a safe SL. The key factor now becomes proper enforcement after the fact. Which means where a claim of underage comes up LL need to swiftly and fairly process an investigation and receipt of official documentation where necessary; to swiftly and fairly deal with offendors who lie about their age and (I think this part is critical) to swiftly and fairly deal with anyone who uses the AR system to file a ton of false griefer AR's against people claiming they are underage without any proof whatsoever.

I understand how the naming system works now, but doesnt explain how I saw someone with a last name of Hurricane instead of Resident with rez date of 6/19/2011 (9 days old) There are still a few legacy sites where you can register a last name (see the link Marigold posted above). On a side note: I really wish people would stop saying all new accounts have a surname of 'Resident' bucause that isn't actually true. They have a single name and no surname. You will only see 'Resident' in old legacy viewers and some legacy scripts. If you use a new 2.x based viewer you'll probably never see any reference to 'Resident' as a surname

  9. MoiselleErin Teardrop wrote: Yes I know you can disable notices in your own preferences but that is not the question. Question is - why do some groups insist on spamming too many notices about the same subject? To answer your question: For the same reason that we get the same leaflet from the same pizza place down the road through our door every week. Or the same spam email asking if we want some special pharmaceutical products! Because these people believe that its good advertsing and, sadly, in some respects it is because people fall for it and live with the spam. If everyone dropped the group people would stop doing it! As others have stated though, at least with most groups its within your control. I'll drop a group in an instant if it becomes too spammy no matter how good the product or service they offer is (or at the very least turn off group notices). What's more annoying is people who use third party notice services and then make it nigh on impossible to unsubscribe. The best thing to do in that scenario is to AR for spam. Honestly, complaining about it is never going to solve the problem. The only things you can do to solve the problem is to stop doing business with people who spam and/or to AR them where necessary.

  13. Couldn't agree more Melita. If I didn't explicitly request to be on your list, then don't put me on it. If I did explicitly request to be on your list, but later decide I don't want to be on it, make it easy for me to unsubscribe. It's simply good business practice and, more to the point, common courtesy. Sadly, I suspect we are speaking on deaf ears. Good business practice and common courtesy are lacking in business, not just in SL but in RL too where email spam, postal spam and cold calling is all too common. Most sad of all is that the only reason why they continue to do it is because they get a few who fall for it and do business with them. To some extent, we should also be angry at those who continue to do business with spammers becuase if every single one of us stopped doing business with them, they wouldn't exist. So here's my call to eveyone who has a sense of decency and common courtesy about them too: DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SPAMMERS!
  14. Theres some good advice here for getting set up on the Marketplace, including box settings: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Selling-in-the-Marketplace/ta-p/700193 The permissions of the box arent that important unless you want people to me able to modify\copy\transfer the box itself, although to avoid confusion it might be best to set the permissions to the same as the contents. What I would recommened is that you set the boxes to "open" before you put them in the magic box for sale on the marketplace. This is not essential, but it does ease things a litle for the user as they just need to click the box to open it when it gets delivered this way. You could just throw the box straight in as it is with the set for sale option (the person would just be paying themselves to open it!) However, it could confuse newer users so I think it's better to set to "open".
  15. I don't want to speak for Dakota, but I've seen her answer that very question before. Her answer was that it is about education. Yes, they could simply move the item to the right category, but then people will keep potentially listing in the wrong category knowing that it will just be moved by LL if needs be. It would potentially breed apathy when people are listing rather than them thinking properly about the right category for their listings. It makes more sense to have the user recognise their mistake so that they can address it and be aware for the future doesn't it? However, I do think that its a must for an email to be sent to the user when an item is delisted, perhaps with a suggestion for where it should go. This is a fair compromise between making the user take some responsibility but giving them as much information as possible to make the correct category choice (and I believe that Dakota has also stated they they are indeed working on providing such a process, although it has been a long time coming!)
  16. Melvin Starbrook wrote: I think LL should start making a 3.x viewer... A viewer that looks and works like a 1.x viewer and with the new things on the grid (mesh). I think 2.x is an dead end.. Its there for over a year (almost 2 years) and still not many people are using it because they dont like it... most people love 1.x.. wondering what you think Melvin I think you need to provide solid statistical evidence for you assertation that "most peole love 1.x". (Hint: You won't be able to! :smileywink:) As I said elsewhere in another thread, trying to cater for everyone's preferences and desires in SL is impossible. Some people prefer 1.x. Some people prefer 2.x. Some people prefer offical viewer. Some people prefer a TPV. There is no general consensus in SL and probably never will be because its userbase is so diverse. Going backwards in not the answer though. Providing as much choice as possible without it becoming too confusing is the answer (which is quite a balancing act and not easy to achieve!)
  17. What I know about SL: - It is made up of a diverse array of people from many different cultures around the world with different opinions about what is good or bad about SL. - There will therefore never be a complete consensus and the management of SL will always be about balancing enough choice to catar for all these opinions, but no so much choice as to make SL hard for new users to understand. - There will always be people who love certain things about SL and people who hate certain things about SL. - Because of this diversity it is impossible to say all residents should like (viewers!) or do (building!) certain things. - Whenever anyone tries to force an opinion about, for example, viewer choice on someone else they are entirely missing this point about diversity and choice. There's nothing wrong with expressing an opinion, but there is no need to force an opinion on others and their choices should be respected too. - It is all this diversity that makes SL both amazing and sometimes frustrating at the same time!
  18. Josh Susanto wrote: Most of my buyers are not having delivery problems, but those who do are having MANY. In one case, I'm showing 11 items failed to deliver from 10 orders, all for one buyer. In another case, 9 items not delivered from 6 orders. And there's more. Seriously, LL... WTF??? If it seems specific to individual people that impies a problem with the delivery at their end rather than the Marketplace itself. It could be, for example, that they are on particularly laggy sims. I'm just guessing based on what you are saying, but I don't think a solution lies in anything you can do with your magic box etc. I think it's something those specific customers need to do. It would probably be best for those customers to contact support to investigate their situation. If you were feeling like a good samaritan you could also contact them and perhaps test some deliveries with them in a different location. It would also be interesting to know whether they are experiencing delivery problems all the time from different merchants. Have they actually contacted you btw? I'd would hope someone who has had 11 failed deliveries from you would have contected you by now?!
  19. Alexandra Barcelos wrote: Why do they make this so complicated .. why is there evin a complete avatar category if we cant post our complete avatars there without getting them removed ?? Same goes for the shoes ... when i type in the category search the womens boots never came up neither did the complete human female avatar ... i need to type these specific words to reach them . For someone that doenst know those categories they only get more and more flags on there accoumpt on something that is problably not their fault in the first place . And thank you for letting me know btw <3 As a tip, I find it better, when choosing a category for an item, to use the browse function rather than searching. This makes it much easier to see all the sub-categories as you expand the list. So, for your boots for example - click the 'Change Category' option on your listing. Then, rather than typing in a category search, change to the 'browse' tab. Click on 'apparel' to expand, click on 'women's' to expand, click on 'women's footwear' to expand. You'll now see all the sub-categories for 'women's footwear' making it eaiser to identify where it should go As a rule, LL specify that you should use the most appropriate sub-category wherever possible rather than higher level categories. This actually also works in your favour too becuase, when you put an item in a lower sub-category, it also automatically appears for searches in a parent category too. So, when you puts your boots in 'Women's Boots' it will appear there and in ''Women's Footwear'.
  20. Call a virtual doctor, QUICK! Seriously though, it's probably just some random attachment your friend is wearing. There is no way to 'get sick' in SL, but wearing certain things might make your avatar act in a certain way for the purposes of roleplay. Have your friend check what objects they are wearing and detach things to narrow down what the culprit might be To check everything you are wearing look in the "My Outfit" folder in inventory (for Viewer 2) or type "worn" in the inventory search box.
  21. As Griffin says, you have to have to have the magic box rezzed in world, but LL are working on a solution to do away with magic boxes and just deliver straight from inventory (called Direct Delivery). It's currently being beta tested but should be available to us all some time later in the year. See the 'Direct Delivery' section in Brooke's post here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Merchants/Marketplace-Update-May-2011/td-p/866779 And some FAQs on how it will work here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SL_Marketplace:Direct_Delivery_FAQ
  22. I don't know the creator, but you could drop Torley Linden a line as I think I read in one of his Tweets that he put this banner together. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden/Contact Also try a search on the Marketplace for 'Robot Avatar': https://marketplace.secondlife.com/products/search?search%5Blayout%5D=gallery&search%5Bcategory_id%5D=&search%5Bsort%5D=&search%5Bper_page%5D=96&search%5Bkeywords%5D=robot+avatar&search%5Bprice_low%5D=&search%5Bprice_high%5D=&search%5Bprim_count_low%5D=&search%5Bprim_count_high%5D=&search%5Bcopy_permission%5D=0&search%5Bmodify_permission%5D=0&search%5Btransfer_permission%5D=0 I haven't been through them all, but there's some similar lookign ones there
  23. I'm surprised they are still selling that! It may be the case that Picks still play a small part in search rankings. LL are not directly forthcoming with the exact details of how their search algorithm works to prevent people from knowing how to game it. However, it is my understanding that picks play little part anymore. It's entirely a matter of choice how you choose to handle your search rankings and I'm not going to say one way is right and another isn't. I've gotten into heated debates by making that mistake before! There are a few people around offering search optimisation advice and tools who may post here with advice, or you can do a search on the marketplace for something like 'search optimisation tools' and you may find some tools to help. My entirely personal option though, is that your best bet is to simply read the advice from the knowledgebase here and concentrate on producing quality products, naming them accurately and meaningfully and ensuring that they are set to show in search: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Guidelines-for-creating-search-listings/ta-p/803947
