  1. As I pointed out elsewhere, we are already here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/General-Discussion-Forum/I-just-discovered-I-m-not-real/m-p/963921/message-uid/963921/highlight/true#U963921 As for what we have in store for you humans ... breeding. Pure and simple. Where do you think the 'redheads are sex crazed' legend comes from? :smileyindifferent:
  2. Until there are strigent, enforceable rules controlling content and actions across grids, it would be very dangerous for LL to allow Second Life to connect to other grids in a hypergrid model. Eventaully, i do expect hypergrid connections to be the norm, perhaps with SL at the fore or perhaps not. However, there's going to be a lot of regulation and organisation required before it become truly viable.
  3. This debate is all well and good, but what I want to know is, what is the price of cheese in Istanbul?!
  4. Really cool costumes from a really cool costume maker! Or cheese ... actually, yeah ... buy cheese! :smileyhappy:
  5. It shouldn't cause any major issues. The latest search (in V2) will find display names no probelm (and also show the username). Not entirely sure about V1 search. All your creations will also show both your username and display name in edit mode so that people will still know who you are as creator. I think it only really becomes a cause for confusion if you are changing your display name regularly, although even then your underlying username will never change.
  6. I've been building with viewer 2 for quite a while and haven't particularly noticed any obvious deifference between how builds look in V1 vs V2. If you have specific examples with screenshots, it might be a good idea to raise a JIRA in case there is a particular bug at play. It sounds to me (with my admittedly limited knowledge) that its some sort of rendering issue that could be a result of differences between settings you have in V1 vs V2. For example, jagged edges are often a result of a lack of anti-aliasing. It's possible you have anti-aliasing set in V1 but not in V2 graphics preferences. As you rightly say though, V1 is on it's last legs. When mesh comes (looking August time i believe) that will pretty much be the death knell for V1 as it won't even render mesh objects, and there are already some new enhancements that don't work in V1. LL have also stated that it's likely that other things will start to break in V1 as new developments are focussed on in V2. In light of that, I don't think it's wise to spend too much time worrying how things look in V1 and concentrate on how they look in V2. The Phoenix team are apparently ploughing along with their V2 Firestorm and acknowledge that V1 is on it's last legs, as are other TPVs. I know some people still love V1 but now has to be the time to at least get used to V2 (either official or TPV version) or you risk being left struggling to learn the new V2 stuff with no alternative when V1 finally does become unusable.
  7. Pay too much attention to what other merchants are saying and doing. Before I get jumped on, I don't mean that in a nasty way! Merchants sharing thoughts and ideas can be a great thing. However, in my early days as a merchant I spent far too much time looking at what other merchants were doing under the mistaken assumption that I had to do the same sorts of things to be a success. I also believed what I saw other merchants saying far too quickly without doing my own research. I was stupid and naive. Now, i still look at what other merchants are saing and doing, but I don't immediately assume it is right. I do my own research, I decide what is right for my business irrespective of what others are doing and I recognise that there is more to success that just copying others and blindly assuming that the first thing i read must be right.

I'm not sure how you can say it has 'definitely dropped to critical levels' but the evidence shows that it's far from critical. I'd love to see the trend grow again obviously but, as user numbers are consistent, there is no cause for panic. Give me a shout if the actual evidence shows a consistent downward trend and then I'll panic with you!

They usually make me very suspicious especially when "27" people apparently took the time to rate a product and said nothing, its obviously faked. You have to write something when leaving a review on the Marketplace, although I suppose technically someone could just put in a lot of spaces in the review box. However, any blank reviews you are seeing will probably be 'reviews' that were ported across from Xstreet where you could just rate without writing a review. In all honestly though, I don't personally pay that much attention to reviews (that doesn't just apply to SL either). If i'm buying something online I'll research it, i'll try a demo if available, I'll see a 'live' version of it if possible, and I'll make an informed decision. Reviews, for me, are but a small part of the picture in deciding whether to buy something. It even applies to things like movie reviews. I never take movie reviews too seriously. If I want to watch something, I will, even if someone else doesn't like it. And if I make a mistake I just shrug and take it as a learning exercise.
  13. Not sure what it's like across the pond and elsewhere in the world, but here in England their isn't much of a summer to tempt people outdoors and away from their comupter at the moment!
  14. LiveReport wrote: I have heard that when the older viewers are phased out the "resident" part will go away. I believe it is just a placeholder for the old viewers. :smileysurprised: This is essentially correct. You don't see the surname "resident" anywhere in a V2 compatible viewer's interface. You just see their single username and their display name (if you have it set to show display names). The "resident" surname is just a cludge really to cater for older V1 based viewers. V1 based viewers are slowly but surely dissapearing now that TPVs are forging ahead with their V2 based viewers. Their ultimate demise will probably be accelerated come August when Mesh is due to arrive (V1 viewers won't display mesh objects). I know it's still a bone of contention with some but, honestly, if you want to continue to have SL work properly for you, it's time to get used to a V2 based viewer. The "resident" surname does still have some relevant to keep older, legacy scripts working, but you'll only really see it if you are using those old, legacy scripts. This will be what Chronometria is experiencing with things like payment terminals and contest boards. Most good scripters have been updating their scripts to handle single names and display names. Unfortunately, there will likely be a few old scripts around for some time that don't get updated.

It's just been announced that the News of the World is to close though. Now we need to go after the rest of Murdoch's evil empire! 16. Mayalily wrote: This is a vid of a large breasted belly dancer. I don't see her breasts moving a great deal except by using shoulder movements, which we really don't do when we are just dancing regularly. Yep, given the size and mass of her breasts, and the apparent well supported bra she is wearing, her breast movements are as expected. However, were she to be topless, her breasts would move differently. Were she to be wearing a less supported bra, her breast would move differently. Were she to have bigger (or smaller) breasts they would move differently. Which is one of the points I'm trying to make. I could pretty much guarantee that, with playing around with the sliders, I could create breast movement in SL that mirrored that dancer's movement. If i were to set my avatar to a similar size to her, and wear a similar bra it would look relatively realistic. Were I to change my size or wear something different though, it probably wouldn't. I'd also need to be doing a dance that mirrored that dance for it to be realistic. If I were jumping up and down like crazy though, it probably wouldn't look realistic. By the same token, if she were to be jumping up and down very quickly (like some of the jerky movements we have in SL) her breasts would move a lot more. Mayalily wrote: It sure would hurt if my boobs bounced around in RL as much as SL thinks they should. What you mean is "It sure would hurt if my boobs bounced around in RL as much as they do in certain scenarios in SL depending on how i have my sliders set" Which i agree with entirely! If i had my sliders set for relatively realistic movement when walking along normally, but the suddenly jumped on or off an animation giving an unrealistic movement, my boobs would jiggle like crazy. If they did that in RL it would hurt like crazy for sure! Thats a result of the unrealistic sudden movements in SL though which, thankfully, we don't do in RL:) Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying SL physics is perfect, because it isn't. Boobs will do some crazy things in SL when all these factors like lag, avatar size, physics sliders, jerky actions come into play. I think it's probably about the best they can do though given these constraints. Mayalily wrote: Anyhow, I was studying this to see just how realistic I could get it, but then the avatar physics caused my shape to detach, so I moved on to other things right now. But animation is interesting to me, nonetheless. That's very odd! It shouldn't even be possible to not have a shape attached. The physics layers are a completely separate layer to the shape. If that keeps happening for you, it might be a good idea to raise a bug report JIRA. It's possbile SL was just being buggy at the time and your shape got 'ruthed'
  17. Mayalily wrote: I have danced 3 times in front of a mirror and have rather large breasts and they don't move like milk jiggling in a jug. If we were to stand next to one another in RL and dance the results of our breast movement probably wouldn't be exactly the same. Yes, both our breasts would have to obey the laws of physics, but the actual movement would depend on a number of factors such as size, mass, the exact movement we were making, what we were wearing (or not!) etc. While the laws of physics apply to all of us in RL, becuase we are all slightly different, the results of those laws on our bodies will be slightly different. It's the same in SL. We all don't have exactly the same shape, height, mass etc. This is where the problem comes in with breast physics in SL. Because we are all different, we need to tailor the breast physics to match our breast size, mass, etc. In a sense, it's a good thing that LL have provided so many slider options, because it allows people to tailor the physics to match their body as much as possible. However, it doing so it makes it somewhat complicated. They could have simply had some very basic options - either physics is on or off. However, that still wouldn't be realistic for all people. It would be realistic for the avatar shape, size, mass etc that they tested with, but we all won't be the same as that test avatar! It's a no win situation really. There are other fators that complicate the laws of physics in SL though. For example, certain actions in SL are unrealistic and are actions that we don't do in RL. For example, when you stop suddenly from a teleport or when you stop suddenly from an animation, SL breast physics will cause the breast to jiggle like crazy! Technically speaking, that excess jiggle is 'realistic' (depending on how the person has set their sliders) because our breasts would do something similar if we made such sudden, jerky movements in RL. We don't though. We don't suddenly go from dancing to an absolute sudden stop in RL like we do in SL when we stop an annimation. Those are basically the main problems with SL breast physics and it's nothing that can easily be addressed. The breast physics will (relatively) mirror the laws of physics in the real world BUT those laws don't fully apply to everything we do in SL and they also apply differently depending on the setup of our avatar. In essence, the only real way to get perfect breast movement in SL every time is to have a specific, tailored physics layer for each and every outift, scenario and action we perform in SL! Breast physics in SL will never be perfect because of these factors, unfortunately. You can get it close by carefully tweeking the settings and perhaps having a few different physics layers for different outfits and scenarios, but most people don't have the time or inclination to do this. They might set up the physics sliders once and get something they think looks right, but it will only look right for the outfit \ action they are doing at that particular time (and there is, of course, the other issue in that some people deliberately make their avatars and physics unrealistic. I might not always like the way an avatar looks or acts, but that's the wonder of SL i suppose, it allows us all to be what we want to be, no matter how realistic or not that happens to be). Here endeth my attempt at a physics lesson!

  19. There's an entry about the new profiles in the latest LL blog post: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/July-Update/ba-p/964435 Also some interesting analysis on these new 'social profiles' here along with more discussion in the comments: http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/web-profiles-major-updates-ahead/ As for that previous image from Blot - looks like some third party ning site that someone created trying to pigy back of the Second Life name. Also looks like it's been taken down.
  20. There's two issues: 1. Some people don't spend enough time getting the settings right to have relatively realistic movements. It's pretty easy to get relatively realistic breast movement with a little bit of experimentation with the sliders (although LL have perhaps provided too many slider options meaning that people who just turn it on and don't experiment with the sliders will likely have unrealistic movements). 2. Our old friend lag. If a sim is lagging, physics can lag too causing breasts to appear to go crazy! It's not really anything to do with implementation as such though, although LL could do with making it easier to understand the sliders.
  21. I have banners enabled (hence my sarcastic response on page 2!) Generally speaking, I don't mind them because sometimes I might actually be interested in what a poster here is doing / selling etc. It only becomes a problem when people misuse them as, as far as I'm concered, is obviously going on with the posters in question here. It's a shame that people do things like that and I hope the mods recognise it and deal with it accordingly, as I'd hate to have to disable banners and miss out of some genuinely interesting ones.

I have never seen anyone with a red head, i mean pure red! But those that do kiss a redhead never go back. It's like a drug. Rare? 4% of the global population so yeah, pretty rare. However, you are dangerously close to revealing the truth that we are in fact an alien race sent to infiltrate humanity in preparation for the invasion (that's why kissing us sends you into a state of ignorant bliss so you are unprepared when the mothership arrives). As for a 'a pure red head' - if you mean the whole head, then that can be achieved by leaving us out in direct sunlight for more than half an hour or so. It's our achilles heal. Sun intollerance. On our planet the sun is only a fraction of the strength of the earth's sun you see. Anyway, the point is. Keep quite about our masterplan or we'll be sending Agent Scully around to sort you out (yeah, she's one of us - we had her infiltrate the FBI years ago to keep the likes of Mulder distracted with misinformation about fake aliens and stuff so he didn't pay attention to us).
