  1. Abby10 Lenroy wrote: But let me ask you this question, when people create a movement that says they are the 99% of the population, why are there only 1% of the 99% showing up to protest? A variety of reasons, I guess. Some of the 99% support the cause but are not in a position to actively protest. Some have let apathy win. Probably the main (and saddest) reason though is that many of the 99% don't know, or won't admit, that they are the 99%. I'm not camped outside St Paul's either, but I actively support the peaceful protest to whoever cares to listen, and am quite vocal about it in RL too. Unfortunately, many of the 99% probably don't even realise what is going on. Many think the 'Occupy' protests are about a group of Marxist hippies trying to destroy capitalism. They don't actual realise that, ultimately, the occupy movement is about fighting for fairness and equality that will benefit them too and, more importantly, will benefit the world. The world can't survive indefinitely under the current system. Something will give eventually. It can either give now in a controlled manner under pressure from the people of the world, or it will get very messy ... eventually. Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not for another 100 years. But eventually! I'd like to hope it happens peacefully and in a controlled manner during my lifetime. If it doesn't though, I hope i'm long gone before the real collapse arrives because that won't be a nice world to live in! The fact of the matter is that there is no true democracy in the world. Almost all governments are controlled by the elite. An elite that is unelected, has been given no mandate to rule by the people of the world and who have mostly gained their power and wealth via nefarious means throughout history. The 1% rule the world. Always have. There have been civil wars, revolutions, concessions and the elite have given up just enough to fool the 99% into thinking they have democracy and accountability. We bought it. Fell for it hook, line and sinker. People are starting to wake up to it though. Whether all the 99% wake up to it remains to be seen. I'm not saying all politicians are part of the 1%, or paid off by the 1%, either. Many are not. It's just that many of them have been fooled too, or their voices of disquiet have be silenced by the elite. Yep. I know. Who stole the happy-go-lucky Suella who laughs in the face of all the crazy conspiracy theorists and extols the virtues of 'live and let live', right? I'm still right here. Nothing has changed! I'm still happy-go-lucky. I still laugh in the face of the conspiracy theorists. I still believe wholeheartedly in 'live and let live' I just know how the world has always worked and am glad to see others waking up to it and (probably naively) hope this time we might actually bring about true change and genuine democracy. A democracy which, I stress once again, has a place for capitalism and is not about Marxism. It's quite simply about fairness, equality and the removal once and for all of the unelected elite who control the world in a manner that, if it isn't brought into check soon, will result in a world that really won't be a nice place to live in! /me steps off her soapbox and goes back to eating cheese (the elite put sedatives in cheese you know? they have me under their control too). (What do you mean, I had to go and ruin a perfectly sound and passionately voiced speech by making a cheese comment that makes me look like a crazy nutjob?!)

It will be about as useful as what you are trying to do here, and I think you'd fit right in. No. He really wouldn't! Sorry - it winds me up a little how some people are already thinking exactly what governments and the 1% want you to think. That the people taking part in 'Occupy' protests are miserable whiners bent on drama. Don't get me wrong, there will undoubtedly be those types of people who jump on the 'Occupy' bandwagon, but that's not what the vast majority of the people involved are about. They are hard-working, smart, intelligent people who are well and truly fed-up with our governments being paid-off by the rich to control and repress the less well off. The 'Occupy' movement is a peaceful movement with a global important message, not a random whine with no substance. Mind you, the longer it drags on the more chance there is of it turning into violent protest and mindless violence. That won't be the result of the hard-working, smart, intelligent people I just mentioned though. It will be a result of idiotic people taking advantage of the situation, probably planted by governments and the 1% to give them the excuse to get aggressive and quash the movement, just like the Tories did in the 80s with the UK miner's strikes (yeah, I know, who'd have thunk it?! Me?! A conspiracy theorist?!)

I think we have more sense than to try and remake America shows for the UK market (remaking shows is usually a big fail!) We do get some good Sci-Fi from America too, although my faves always get canned after one season! I was really rather annoyed when 'The Event' was cancelled (did anyone actually watch that or was I it's one viewer?!)

Ian Undercroft wrote: I'm not (to adopt cockney rhyming slang) a merchant banker (or any other form of banker for that matter), but I think it disgusting (whether those folks have spines or not) that in London their entirely pointless encampment has forced St. Paul's cathedral to close its doors to the public. It hasn't really forced the Cathedral to close it's doors though, has it? It's been an unfortunate victim of circumstance and they have made the decision to close the doors 'on health and safety grounds'. Remember, the Bishop of London told the police to leave the protestors alone and allow them to exercise their right to peacefully protest when they first started gathering and the police started to get heavy handed. It's unfortunate that St Pauls' happens to be right next to the stock exchange. The protestors need to be careful not to cause unnecessary drama that diverts away from the real message. The police should be doing more to allow the people to exercise their right to protest peacefully. To say it is 'pointless' though is unfair. Are all the people camping at Wall Street and other locations around the world to make their point peacefully pointless too? I understand and agree with your concerns that the protest has inadvertently affected an institution that it is not directly protesting against but I hope you honestly don't think it is 'pointless' because, sadly, it's that sort of thinking that will mean nothing will ever change and 1% of the global population will always control the other 99% when they have never been elected to do so. (Mind you - the church and organised religion are also a separate but connected part of the problem, but don't let me get started on that! :smileysurprised: )

  9. Please don't compare the (relatively speaking) minor issues with LL, the marketplace and a handful of bad merchants with the important, historic and courageous RL movement to address excessive corporate greed, class divide and mass control of our media and governments by the corporate 1%. A movement which, incidentally, is not about anti-capitalism as many wrongly assume. Fighting against corporate greed, control and arrogance is not a fight against capitalism. All the people spending their days at Wall Street, St Pauls's Cathedral and other locations around the world peacefully protesting have a spine. People who rant aimlessly on a forum have no spine. The two are in no way linked. Your comparing chalk and cheese. Mmm ... cheese!

  11. I found this recently: It's not really my favourite comedy skit, but it did make me laugh and did kinda remind me of SL and, in particlar, these forums. My favourite would probably have to be something by the Pythons, but there's too much brilliant stuff to choose from. Incidentally, any Brits out there who haven't seen "Holy Flying Circus" on BBC4 really, really should catch it on iPlayer or when its next on Beeb4. I watched it last night and it's bloody brilliant. It's a comedy dramatisation of the drama that surrounded the release of Life of Brian. I was expecting it to be a bit naff (how could you possibly out-comdedy the Pythons by trying to play them, right?) However, it turned out to be the most brilliant piece of satire with some amazing acting and self-referential genius. I'd go as far as to say it was almost as good as Life of Brian itself! Seriously! Watch it now! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0162zbx

Europe is that really big country across the English Ocean where they all eat horses and have hairy armpits. That's not part of Britain. It's part of Asia I think. Bloody savages the lot of them, I know that much. Anyway ... Bally ho! Time for tea and cakes!

  15. Thanks! You are all far too kind. More importantly though, do I have the perfect breast shape?
  16. Thanks all! You're too kind It took me freaking ages and lots of pulling out of hair to make the badge if I'm honest! Basically though, the trick is to create each 'frame' you want as a layer in Photoshop (or other image program) then save it as an animated GIF (where yo can specify the time between each frame change). The biggest pain is aligning each layer (frame) so that it's not jerky. Each of the 'frames' in my badge is a snapshot with a pose inworld using a different facial expression with an emoter. I then add each of the snaps with a different facial expression as their own layer in an Photoshop image, and then add the bubble chat and text to each layer. Of course, I need to size the snapshots down to the right size for the badge and then make sure they are all aligned so that the transitions are smooth and my avatar image is jumping all over the place! I believe you can also create an animated badge by recording a video inworld and then saving that as an animated GIF, which is what I think Dana did on her marvellous badge. I hope that makes some vague semblence of sense! If I get chance, i'll try to write up a more meaningful guide. It would have to be based on Photoshop though as that's what I use (the principle would be the same for other programs though). In short though, if you wanted to create an animated badge, the best thing to do is to Google some instructions on how to create animated GIFs in your preferred image editing software. Once you know how to do that, it's a case of taking and editing each snapshot for each frame of your GIF (or recording a short video in SL and converting that to an animated GIF)
  17. Peggy Paperdoll wrote: Mark my words..........there will be a big stink about the new UI. It'll be as if V-2/3 were the greatest UI ever and LL will be condemned endlessly for changing it. It happened with V-1............there's no reason to believe it won't happen with V-2/3. Indeed. Whatever LL do there will be some that kick up a loud stink about it. That's just a fact. The sensible ones just need to completely ignore such drama though and actually look at any UI changes rationally. Personally speaking (and I know I'm in a minority here!) I actually like the sidebar in V2 / V3 and have been happliy using V2 / V3 for over 6 months now. The new interface design does look to have some potential though. Inara has done a nice write up of it with screenshots here: http://modemworld.wordpress.com/2011/10/19/viewer-3-new-ui-first-looks/ Personally, what I would like to see is every action / item logically organised into the top menus, and for users to essentially be able to configure any of those items as they want them on their screen. In other words, you can access everything from the top drop-down menus (profile, inventory, map, appearance etc) and with a simple drag and drop put them either as buttons at the bottom or icons to the side of your screen. I'm personally a big fan of the icons approach (a la sidebar) although I fully appreciate that the sidebar has it's issues and is not to everyone's liking. I'd like to have icons at the side of my screen for the things I most use, but I can access the rest from the top menus if i need to.

  19. Haven't been to this thread for a while. Thanks for all the thanks from everyone! Glad to see you all have super, sexy badges Dazler wrote: Do you like my woodland effort? I do! Do you like my outrageously saracastic new animated badge? If I get a spare moment I might try to do an update here with how to create animated badges (but, in short, you create an image with all the layers you want for each animation phase and save it as an animated GIF file. It can be a bit tedious though as you'll need to get all the layers overlayed correctly so that the transitions don't look too jerky! You can also record a short video in SL and save that as an animated GIF.

  21. I've probably blocked maybe 5 people in nearly 5 years of using SL. Random spammers I think, although one was someone who wated to aggressively argue with me. I gave them a couple of chances to agree to disagree but that wasn't enough for them. Fine by me - mute. Bye! I totally don't get the drama we sometimes see surrounding muting / blocking. If someone is annoying you and won't stop, why start a forum thread about it and cause more drama?! Block them and get on with your life! Similarly, if someone has blocked you for whatever reason, they've blocked you! Not much you can do about it so move on and get on with your life rather than wailing about how someone has blocked you and it's sooooo unfair and how you're going to scream and scream and stamp your feet! GET OVER IT ALREADY! (Sorry. I forgot to take my sedatives this morning! :smileyindifferent: )
  22. Victoria wrote: garey Solo wrote: I don't get why people use twitter. What is the point in posting random messages about your life?? Can someone please enlighten me? What makes you think people use Twitter that way? If someone did, no one would follow them. Your post is short enough to be a tweet. If you posted it on Twitter, would that make it silly? Bingo! It's funny how most people's excuse for not using Twitter is the predictible (but wrong) "I don't want to read about what some random person had for dinner!" To be fair, I probably held that view until I relaised how to use Twitter properly and effectively. You'll only see random, inane tweets if you follow people who say random, inane things. As for 'What is the point in posting random messages about your life?' Well ... umm ... don't post random messages about your life! The way to use Twitter is to follow a variety of sources who tend to post about topics you are interested in, and to similarly post about intersting topics yourself rather than what you had for breakfast! I'll guarantee you one thing - if you follow a variety of sources on Twitter and use it as you main source for news, you'll get a much clearer picture of what the real situation is rather than relying solely on the mass media (which is largely biased - most are controlled by the 1% remember ) or on one specific news source. The main costraint with Twitter is obviously the 145 character limit. "How can you get the news from 145 characters?", I hear you ask! Simples - linking and URL shorteners. For example, I could tweet the following in less that 100 charactars: "Check out this interesting discussion on the SL Forums about social networks: http://goo.gl/0xozt" I've specified what the topic is about. My followers can choose to click the shortened link to come to this thread and read more if they wish. This is how I mostly use Twitter, to share interesting finds and news articles, and how I look for others to follow. I look for people similarly sharing interesting news stories, articles, forum links etc. I suppose you could argue that other social networks, such as Facebook and G+, allow you to do this better as you have more characters. However, it is the simplicity of Twitter that works for me. I have a timeline of the latest tweets from people I follow. I can easily browse through them to see if anyone has shared something i'm interested in. In essence, it's no different from coming to this forum and browsing through the latest thread titles to see if anything interests me. Clearly we are all prepared to do that or we wouldn't have posted in this very thread! So if we are prepared to do that, why wouldn't we be prepared to use Twitter as a means to consolidate all subjects we may be interested in for easy browsing? There's also the fact that both Facebook and G+ have evil privacy policies, whereas Twitter doesn't, but that's a whole other drama! The new SL profiles are essentially based on the Twitter model with the ability to follow people and view topics from them in a timeline (although with larger character limits). Anyway - I feel like a salesperson for Twitter which, believe me, I would never have done a year or two ago. I hated social networks in general back then. Thankfully, I figured out that Twitter is better than the others, and I'm glad I did because now I get accurate, important news and info. a heck of a lock quicker than I used to.
  23. Much as I detest the Daily Fail, at least it wasn't The Sun. "Doc grabs perfect **bleep** ... SHOCKER!" (Bloody bleep filter! I was talking about a doctor who grabbed small blue-breasted birds!)
  24. greek Wingtips wrote: if anyone knows of a police force in SL that can help, please forward me the details, as I do not have any faith in LL so any help would be great Seriously, doing that is going to give you just as much grief as the griefers. Self appointed 'police' in SL are a joke. Don't even go there. Please! As others have stated, follow the mantra "Ban. Mute. Ignore" I know thats probably not what you want to hear. You want action. You want someone to dish out to the griefers what they deserve. It's really not worth you getting stressed over though and I guarantee you that if you just keep banning, muting and ignoring the griefers will eventually give up. Ignoring is probably more important than even banning and muting. The moment you give them attention is the moment they know they have got to you and will continue their actions. This very thread is the type of attention they want and your giving them an open invitation to continue right here. "BAN! MUTE! IGNORE!"
