  1. The problem is not that people are using pics that are too dark for their badges. It's that they have to use the badges to get a decent sized avatar, since the default avatar size is microscopic. It's a work-around and maybe it doesn't work that well. But there are other work-arounds you can use to see people's names even on a dark background. A couple have been mentioned here already. The simple solution has to come from LL... the ability to change the color of your name. Maybe someone who is more concerned about it than I will file a jira about it (hint hint). Since this discussion is taking place here, instead of in, say, the community feedback section, it's likely doing us no good toward solving the problem. Surely, LL have better things to do than rummage through the lowly off-topic forum. Made obvious by the fact that posts here don't add to your count. Not that post count is a big deal to me, but it does seem to send out the message that, in LL's eyes, this section adds nothing substantive to the community. Well, now that I've gone way off topic... ...Dres
  2. YAY It took a while to find it... I would suggest starting at the bottom of the page. ...Dres
  3. I've seen this tip before in the old forums. Maybe you posted it, I don't remember, but either way thanks for the tip. It works very well. ...Dres
  4. I've noticed that if I put "..." in the middle of a sentence... which I am so fond of doing... then try to finish the sentence starting in lower case it shows up as misspelled when I check. I find it aggravating, but I do understand why it works that way. I would prefer to use the spell check that's built into my browser, but it doesn't work with this software. ...Dres ETA I just realized this really had nothing to do with the OP... I need more coffee dammit... lol
  5. I use Stylish in Firefox with Cerise's Blue Goo theme, which makes people's names more readable. She even made one specifically to make the names even more readable. And there's another to take away the rest of the text on the badges, leaving only the name (so you can see the pictures better) until you place your cursor over it. You should give it a try. You can find it on this thread: Blue Goo and other style tweaks for community.secondlife.com. Hope this helps... Dres
  6. Tammy Armundsen wrote: "So you think turning someone in to LL that readily admits they are underage in RL and is on an adult account makes someone a "self-righteous intolerant hypocrite"? Really?" Okay, make that "self-righteous intolerant vigilante." I fail to understand your position on this. Maybe you'd care to elaborate on why you think ARing someone who is clearly committing a bannable offence is not the right thing to do for himself, this person and the Second Life community as a whole. I'd be really interested to know how you've reached this conclusion. ...Dres
  7. Tammy Armundsen wrote: You say you sought to have the putative fifteen-year-old put to Second Death mainly to protect yourself from being banned yourself. Yet you hastened to add that you were innocent and confident of proving it. So why didn't you just give her a short lecture and sever contact? What did you really have to fear? Or were you altruistically trying to protect others (as you later suggest) from the predations of a teen? Perhaps you wanted to protect her morals by driving her out of Second Life? You didn't kill her and now you're upset. Oh dear. Maybe she'll seek revenge! In fact she has no way of knowing who turned her in and is likely still under the delusion that you are an interesting, attractive person and it's someone else out there who is just another self-righteous intolerant hypocrite who thinks his own fantasies are ok but others are dangerous and must be suppressed. So you think turning someone in to LL that readily admits they are underage in RL and is on an adult account makes someone a "self-righteous intolerant hypocrite"? Really? As has been stated before, there's either one of two possibilities: She truly is underage and lied to LL about it or... She is playing at being underage and trying to have sexual relations with adult avatars. Either way, what she is doing is very against LL's policies of exceptable behavior. Perrie, by reporting her and being concerned about the outcome, is merely being a responsible SL resident. It's not self-righteousness; it's not intolerance; it's not hypocrisy. What it is, is commendable. For anyone to suggest otherwise makes me question their thought process. ...Dres

  9. Try joining the Phoenix Support group and tell them what you are experiencing. They're very good at helping people with these kinds of problems. Here's a link to their support page: Phoenix Viewer Support. Hope that helps... Dres

  11. Perrie Juran wrote: So unless someone is aware of something else in the TOS or CS that I am missing, I don't believe that there was a problem with my sharing this fact with the hostess. Once the girl told me she was 15, it became "public information." This is what I was thinking of: 4. Disclosure Residents are entitled to a reasonable level of privacy with regard to their Second Life experience. Sharing personal information about your fellow Residents without their consent -- including gender, religion, age, marital status, race, sexual preference, alternate account names, and real-world location beyond what is provided by them in their Resident profile -- is not allowed. Remotely monitoring conversations in Second Life, posting conversation logs, or sharing conversation logs without the participants' consent are all prohibited. From:Community Standards Like I said, I don't think you were wrong in letting her know someone at her place was underage. I probably would have done that same thing. I just wouldn't have posted it here. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid, but I just don't want to see you get into trouble for doing the right thing. ...Dres
  12. Bunky Snowbear wrote: Ahh, but how do I know they are private if they have no barriers? Surely if people were concerned about trespassers, they would install security. If you were walking down the street in RL and you noticed someone wasn't home, would you walk into their house? Even if it was unlocked? Think about it... I don't have my land set to ban everyone and their grandmother, but that doesn't mean, when I sign on, I want to find my poseballs rezzed and know that people were playing around with my stuff. I don't want everyone having slex in my house with their grandmother either. Would you? There are many places you can go that aren't private homes and you should be able to tell the difference. If I want you inside my house I'll invite you to come in, otherwise it's just rude. That being said, IM me one day and I'll invite you over... I do like showing it off... lol. ...Dres ETA: Oh I didn't mention... my doors are always locked, but that doesn't always stop people from entering where it's clear they aren't wanted. Guess I'm not really all that concerned or I'd have a security orb. I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt.
  13. You forgot to mention the Zindra fiasco. I feel like that, above anything else did a lot to destroy, our happy little world. I didn't come here until 2008 and even then it was a magical place... you never knew what you'd run into. Now you have to worry about anything you do... "OMG am I gonna get ARed because I feel like walking around my 'mature' land nekkid?" "OMG am I gonna get banned because I feel like have slex with my SL boyfriend on my back porch?" "OMG is some AR nazi gonna report my profile because I belong a few questionable groups?" The whole feeling has changed. Once we were a community looking out for each other; helping each other out; learning and shaping "our world" with "our imagination". Now it's like everyone is so paranoid; and rightly so. Marketplace will delist your stuff at the drop of a hat... and don't get me started on the forum moderation. No one knows what will get them in trouble next. The feeling that you can do what you want, say what you want, be what you want (as long as you're not an @$$hole) is long gone and I don't see it coming back any time soon. ...Dres
  14. Perrie Juran wrote: As I stated, I didn't see her logged on for a couple of weeks. She had joined the group at the club where I met her and it was the only group in her profile. I had checked it a few times to see her last log in date and she had not been logged in for a couple of weeks. I was doing what I could to watch the situation. I had informed the club hostess, who had also been trying to help this girl get 'oriented' to SL what had transpired. The girl's Ava was only a few days old when I met her and she had told me a RL friend had told her about SL. Please, don't take this the wrong way, I'm not sticking up for this girl in any way and I'm not saying you did the wrong thing. But isn't revealing personal RL information about someone to another resident a TOS violation? Just saying, maybe you should keep the fact that you may have done that to yourself. Also, is it possible that LL would have suspended her for a few weeks then let her back on as a teen with the same account? Doesn't really make sense but I'm just trying to think of possibilities. Anyway, you did the right thing ARing her... now it's up to LL to do the rest. Guess it would be a little strange to IM her and see what she says, but it's a thought. Either way, it's out of your hands and no longer any of your concern. ...Dres

Penny Patton wrote: Now, to my knowledge LL quietly snuck in the ability for residents to upload 1bit alpha by creating a 1bit PNG file and uploading it, however they made no announcement and have provided no documentation. It seems to work, tho. So if you want to use an alpha texture that has no translucent areas you would be best off trying it this way to possibly avoid alpha rendering problems. Wow, thanks for this information... can't wait to try it, as soon as I figure out how to make a 1 bit png... lol.
  16. Tiffy Vella wrote: ooh ooh ooh..(hops about a bit)....just had a minor brainwave 2 seconds after posting..maybe what we need is a panel in the item's Marketplace listing showing what a customer would see if they could be inworld and inspecting the boxes contents? ie..every individual item listed with its perms? This would be a wonderful idea if it weren't for the fact that, as Winter has already stated, you still would see a modifiable object with a non-modifiable script as not modifiable. This is the same as it would be inworld so there's really no way around it. An automated system would be nice but it would still get things wrong. It's really up to each creator to make sure the permissions are stated correctly on each of their listings. Maybe the best way to do this is have the system be partially automated; in that, a merchant can go back and change what the system may have gotten wrong manually. The best of both worlds, so to speak. The permission system in SL is, itself, pretty complicated; therefore, I do believe the solution would have to be a bit complicated as well. There's really no easy answer. ...Dres
  17. The simple answer is no. And that goes for shoes as well. I will not use hair that is not modifiable, period. I will not use shoes with scripts that can't be removed. The other day I bought some hair from this one place and it was modifiable; so I thought, "great." But, when I got home, I checked and there were a ton of scripts in it and they weren't resize scripts. I looked and, low and behold, they were scripts that would derez the hair if it was rezzed in-world instead of just wearing it. Wtf? I was pissed. And, of course, there was no kill script. So I ended up spending a good half hour deleting every single script in every single prim, cursing as I went. You know how hard it is to grab tiny, little, flexi prims? At least it was only about 65 prims total. The whole time I was thinking about the horrible notecard I was going to send to the creator. But once I was done I felt better and decided I had spent too much time on it already so forget it. I monitor my script usage religiously and try to lower it as much as I possibly can. It's amazing how much better Slife is since I started doing that. ARC... eh, whatever. ...Dres

  19. I usually never except friend requests if that person hasn't spoken to me first. What I do is IM them and ask if they need some help. I do this before declining their request, that way if they answer me and do need help I can except it. Then I will let them know that they can IM me if they need any further help in the future. If they don't answer then I decline their request, simple as that. I'll also let them know that some consider it rude to send a friend request without taking the time to first start a conversation with them. I consider that an important thing to point out, especially if they are new. Personally, I never send friend request without asking the person if they want me to first. I just think that the most courteous way of handling it. ...Dres

  23. Do you know if anyone else sees it in their local chat? It could just be you seeing it. Either way there could be a way to turn that "feature" off. Did your AO come with any instructional note cards (there may even be one in the AO itself)? If not you might want to IM the person who sold it to you. Be careful, because many times, an AO creator will use an AO made by someone else and just add their animations to it. In which case, the creator will not be the person from which it was bought. Hope this helps... Dres
