As in the last few weeks, RC regions probably mean all regions in the AWS cloud. Or? I think you should slowly adapt to it and adapt the server names to the current status quo. I know how difficult it is for some to part with old terms, you can tell that the term EEP-Setting is still a rarity and everyone continues to use the old word Windlight, but it is time to adapt to the current situation . Everything else just causes misunderstandings.

As others mentioned, nearly all regions are now running in the cloud - this is true for both SLS and RC channels.   We still have a few test regions running in the old datacenter, as mentioned in last week's update post:

  2. Second Life Server

    No roll.

    Second Life RCs

    https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2020-11-19.552571.html

    Scheduled Tuesday 2020-11-24 07:00-10:30 PST

    On Region Restarts

The uplifted Grid Poking Bot is running on Aditi, and we hope to move it to Agni as soon as we've run a last battery of tests on it. This doesn't help much for restarting regions this week, but as noted above we anticipate restarting almost all of them as part of this week's rolls anyway.

@Maestro LindenI assume since the uplift planned for Tuesday does not involve new code it is not covered by the scope of this thread?  Just that seeing the announcement on the GSP for the Tuesday operation and yet no mention made of it here is a bit vague and confusing.

arabella is correct - the sim rolls originally penned in for this morning have been cancelled.  Instead, we expect to update the uplifted regions to a new build tomorrow morning.

  4. Update at 2020-11-03 08:54 SLT

Clarified that the uplifted simulator update is essentially the RC update for this week.  The update has also been rescheduled to be split between Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

    Second Life Server

No roll to the Second Life Server channel this week.

Second Life RC / Uplifted Simulators

The RC/uplifted simulator channel will be updated this week, with some bugfixes and more internal changes.

    https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/simulator/2020-11-04.551666.html

    Scheduled Wednesday 2020-11-04 07:00-10:30 PST, Thursday 2020-11-05 07:00-10:30 PST

    On Region Restarts

We are currently in the process of uplifting the Grid Poking Bot that handles automatic restarts for regions with high uptime, so you may not see them this week.

  5. Hi guys, regarding the status blog, this message is current generic one shown for scheduled maintenance, such as rolling restarts:

    Quote

In progress - Scheduled maintenance is currently in progress. We will provide updates as necessary.

I agree this is somewhat confusing when the maintenance "event" (rolling restarts) was canceled for this week.  I have brought this communication issue up with the product team.

Regarding region restarts this week, there are a few different reasons that regions can be restarted, outside of rolling restarts.  Aside from the automated restarts for regions with high uptime (described under "On Region Restarts"), the support team can also manually restart regions at their discretion.  The Blake Sea restart earlier today was one case of a manual restart, which was done to improve performance in the regions.

  6. Second Life Server:

No rolls are planned for the main channel this week.

    Second Life RC:

No rolls are planned for the RC channels this week.

    On Region Restarts

Regions will be restarted if they have been running for more than 10 days on Tuesday (Main Channel) and Wednesday (RCs) regardless of whether or not new code is being deployed, for the general health and well being of the Simulators. Nothing beats turning it off and then on again ... once in a while.

As always please plan events around these maintenance windows. However, if you are hosting an event on Tuesday or Wednesday when we're not deploying new code, you can restart your region ahead of time to avoid interruptions.

Milmeranda, still on the old server code from 2007-07-31.

And, sure enough, region crossing trouble there.

@LoganPryor is correct, Milmeranda is on the RC channels, and will be updated to a new build tomorrow morning.  That said, I would expect all of the server versions on Agni right now to have the same region crossing behavior - 2020-07-31T15:02:15.545966 itself introduced the latest changes for it.

In the user group yesterday, the RCs were described:

So if one were to exercise the new region crossings, I guess one would head for regions running 2020-07-29T00:01:10.545722, right?

I realize any effect would be very different from crossing between regions all running the same version -- and running it on AWS, no less, but some may be interested in trying it anyway.

That's correct, @Qie Niangao.   When crossing between two regions on a version with this change (which is only 2020-07-29T00:01:10.545722 after today's rolls), the new, AWS-compatible, object region crossing code will be used.  Otherwise, the old object region crossing code will be used.

If you'd like to try the new crossing code, the "BlueSteel Sandbox" and "LeTigre Sandbox" regions would be a convenient choice.  Anybody in the open-enrollment "Second Life Beta" group can visit those regions and rez objects.

Hi guys, thanks for checking this out.  The simulator version Dore was on (which is not running on the cloud) had a misconfigured inventory setting, which caused the clothes changing issue.  This problem should be fixed with an update that went out ~30 minutes ago.

We are aware of the object region crossing issue when an object moves from a cloud region into a non-cloud region (which explains the vehicle issue when driving into Dore).   Actually, we did have a bug for object region crossing failing, but I'm not able to reproduce it now, including when driving a vehicle from Ahern (in the cloud) into Dore.  I'd be interested to know if it's still problematic for you, @animats

So far, Ahern, Bonifacio, and Morris seem to work fine. Dore is broken. Vehicle region crossing into Dore failed 3 out of 3 tries. Clothes changing in Dore failed twice. Is there something special about Dore?

@Maestro Linden Erm...Woods of Heaven has now been running for 14 days since its last restart by LL...this is the second time recently it has gone to 2 weeks without a restart, so I must assume the 10-day regime has been ended?

FWIW it is still running pretty well with no obvious sign of a memory leak, so perhaps you (LL) have fixed something?

Good points, Aisha and Logan.  The short answer is that regions are supposed to be restarted automatically after crossing the 10 day uptime mark, but there is currently a bug which causes that procedure to fail.  If your mainland region has high uptime and is encountering performance issues, please feel free to file a support ticket to have the region restarted.  On private estates, I recommend asking an estate manager for a restart when necessary.
