    Second Life RC

The Release Candidate channels will be restarted on Wednesday, 2022-04-27, from 07:00 - 09:30 PDT.  The RC channel regions which were already on 2022-04-15.570936 will simply be restarted to the same version.  The RC channel regions that were previously on the SLS version (2022-04-01.570305) will be upgraded to either 2022-04-15.570936 or a new project, running build 2022-04-21.571166.  The new project from 2022-04-21.571166 includes some bug fixes and new features in LSL, which are detailed in the release notes.  Please see last week's forum post for a brief description of what's in 2022-04-15.570936.

Please note that as with last week's rolls, there is a fair chance that it will take longer than originally scheduled. Please check the Status Blog for the latest roll updates.

The SLS channel will be rolled on Tuesday, 2022-03-15, between 06:30-11:30 SLT.  The version to be deployed is the same one that is already on the RC channels:

    Second Life RC

The RC channels will be restarted on Wednesday, 2022-03-16, between 07:00-09:30 SLT.  There is no version update for this channel this week.

Special Note: the US transitioned to daylight savings time this past weekend.  SLT follows PDT, which is UTC-7, so rolls might appear off by an hour, for most of you in non-US time zones.

Looks like there was a problem with 568051 as the RC regions have rolled back to 567269

Yes, we discovered an issue with 2022-02-02.568051 - LSL scripts using llRequestAgentData() with parameter DATA_PAYINFO were getting corrupt results on that version, matching what DATA_RATING returns.  Due of this issue, the RC regions had an emergency rollback to the build on SLS, 2022-01-06.567269.

The main channel will roll to the same version that it is already on, just to keep the simulators running smoothly.

All of the RC regions will be rolled to a new build, on the same tooling project that they were previously on.

Given that rolling restarts are happening grid-wide, no simulators with >10 day uptime are anticipated to exist after the rolling restarts.

@Maestro Linden was wondering if  when I restart my region as estate manager...does my actual physical server normally  jump to a "different" server?   like they used to when the region servers were located at Linden Labs?    Does anyone know?

Hi dd, when a region is restarted, there's a fair chance (but no guarantee) that it will move to a different host.  You can see the simulator hostname in 'about second life', and can also have LSL scripts look up the hostname and see if it changed after a restart.

Also I note no mention of restarts for regions running for over 10 days.....omission or a change of policy?

We decided to not restart the SLS channel today, even though many regions on that channel are currently sitting at 14 days of uptime.  I expect we'll want to restart SLS regions next Tuesday, whether there's a version change (i.e. promoting this week's RC to SLS next week) or not.

Will this change be permanent, or is it temporary while LL looks for ways to broadcast online group members again?

I would expect this change to remain in place in medium term - there are currently no plans to revert it.  That said, I would not declare the change as "permanent" - group chat will continue to evolve as Linden Lab evaluates its performance and tweaks the design.

  13. Last week, we updated the group chat servers in Second Life, with a change designed to improve the performance of the chat service.  This update affects how Second Life group chat online member list updates work, and what the viewer displays.

    What changed, exactly?

Second Life has historically listed all the people online in a group or ad-hoc chat session.  In an effort to improve overall chat performance, we have limited when these updates are sent.

The Second Life group chat servers has been modified so that large group (over 10 online at once) will work so that only moderators get the full list of everyone online.   Non-moderators now only see online moderators listed in the group chat participants list, for large groups.   Groups with 10 or fewer users online should not be affected by this change.

How does this change appear in the viewer?

The list of visible group chat participants shown in the Conversations panel, when the drop-down menu is expanded.  Before this change, the participants list would show all online members who were currently subscribed to the group's chat session.  With this change, updates to list is limited for large groups, as described above, unless the "Moderate Group Chat" ability is enabled for the agent.

Will this change affect who can send or receive a group chat message?

No, regular chat messages are unaffected by this change - any group member with the "Join Group Chat" ability will be able to participate in group chat just as before.

    Why was this change made?

Broadcasting the online members list has been a significant performance drain on the group chat service, particularly for large groups.  Prior to this change, the volume of messages required to inform chat participants of all other members' online/offline transitions dwarfed the volume of actual chat messages sent in groups.  When the group chat service experiences performance issues, chat messages can be severely delayed in delivery, or dropped completely.

This change was driven by the belief that it is more important to be able to send and receive messages in a chat session rather than view the full list of participants, especially when the list of participants is very large.

Are there any other major changes in this group chat update?

Aside from the change described above, we have improved our internal diagnostic tools for measuring group chat server performance.  This update should help Lindens detect other slowdowns or errors with group chat more accurately.
