  1. The release notes for this week's RC LeTigre have been published: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_RC_LeTigre/11#11.11.30.245889

To answer your question, WolfBaginski, the 'crasher' was tricky to notice because the 'crashes' were actually just unexpected clean restarts (as though an estate manager had restarted the region), so they didn't appear in the crash reporter.  Also, there were no reports of this issue while this server was in RC.

  2. Sassy and Ayesha:

Since the OS upgrade (mentioned here: http://status.secondlifegrid.net/2011/10/17/post1448/ ) takes quite a while to run, regions are migrated off of a host while it's being upgraded. When this happens, it's quite possible for a region to be migrated to a host which hasn't yet received the upgrade, resulting in multiple restarts for a region over the course of the grid-wide upgrade. It's also possible that some of the restarts you see are from the sim crashing - if you provide a list of region names and times of restarts, I can check to see if the region restarted cleanly or actually crashed.

    Ayesha

There was something funny going on with the version number reporting of Nouveau and other regions running on sim20693.agni; they were really running 11.10.03.242227, despite reporting that funky version number. The rolling restart this morning fixed that - the version reported now is 11.10.07.242626. I see no evidence to suggest that the regions on this host are or were ever running on aditi, however.

Aside from SVC-7339, which is only fixed in Magnum, I'm not aware of any specific performance issues which are new in recent server versions. If you can confirm a performance issue which seems to be a bug in the server code (as opposed to just a single slow host), please file a Jira describing the issue, so we can investigate.

  3. The Magnum release notes were originally missing a few jira issues under the bugfixes section:

    * SVC-7294 The simulator is too strict when llGiveInventory() adds restricted-permission items to fullperm attachments which already contained other restricted-permission items

    * SVC-7339 Performance issues on LeTigre 11.09.23.241511 (and Main Channel)

    * SVC-7289 llCastRay() returns RCERR_CAST_TIME_EXCEEDED on small parcels.

:matte-motes-whistle: We forgot about the new features in this week's RC Magnum.  I've just added them to the release notes:

    * 4 new parameters for llGetObjectDetails(): OBJECT_PRIM_EQUIVALENCE, OBJECT_SERVER_COST, OBJECT_STREAMING_COST, OBJECT_PHYSICS_COST

Please just fix the mess you have made of blue steel with it massive lag, apparent memory leaks, and crashes.  Denying the problem exists as you are now only further erodes peoples trust in Linden Labs and encourages more to leave what is starting to appear to be a sinking ship, but if you can't fix the mess you have created at least admit it is a mess and allow those who request it to get out of the RC system as you promised and stop making yourselves look foolish by denying the obvious problems that have been endemic in blue steel since your last update.

Hi Lydia, is there a Jira for this problem?  We need more specifics about the issue (such as where and when) in order to address it.

  5. Hi guys, apologies for the late posting.  Oskar has been out sick, so I'm filling in with the release notes.  Here's the scoop:
    Second Life Server (main channel)
This channel contains the 'maint-server' project that was on LeTigre for the past few weeks.  Most of the changes are bugfixes, but there are also some new LSL functions.
    2011-10-04, 5:00am: Rolling Restart - Release Notes: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Server/11

    Second Life RC BlueSteel
Once again, BlueSteel is getting the "Faster Scripts" project. Changes were made to speed up certain LSL functions. Mmost notably Mono llGet*() calls that access object parameters (such as llGetMas() or llGetPos()) but don't actually change any object parameters, since most of those calls have built-in delays that automatically throttle the rate at which they can loop. This week's update also includes a crash fix and a fix for world map search for estate-limited avatars.  There are more details in the release notes link below.

    Second Life RC LeTigre
LeTigre is getitng a new project this week, with agent inventory service updates.  Users of viewer 2.5.1 or above (or those using thirrd party viewers which have merged in 2.5.1 or above) should see a speed increase when fetching inventory.  This server version also includes support for Marketplace Direct Delivery, which should improve reliability when buying and selling items on the Marketplace.

    Second Life RC Magnum
This week's Magnum will be more or less the same as this week's Second Life Server version.

We will be monitoring this thread during the next week so please feel free to post issues that you feel have been introduced by the new code. Please file a JIRA for issues you find and post the JIRA link into this thread. It really helps us out. When determining if issues are relevant or not research is key. Tracking down exactly the right situation where an issue is occurring greatly speeds up the development process to get fixes in place.  Have a nice week, and let's hope Oskar gets well soon!

    Oscar,

Can you confirm if mesh has also been rolled to the BlueSteel RC sims? I can't upload mesh models to my home sim (Concinna) after today's roll.

Hi Gavin, the BlueSteel and LeTigre channels won't get Mesh until their rolling restarts later this week, per the schedule Oskar posted.

  7. Oskar's on vacation, so I'm filling in for this week's release notes.

    Second Life Server (main channel)

    2011-08-16, 5:00am: Rolling Restart - Release Notes: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Server/11

    Second Life RC BlueSteel

This is a "server hotfix" project.

    • Bug Fixes
      • Fixed a crashing bug.
      • Other security fix.

    2011-08-17, 8:00am: Rolling Restart - Release Notes: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_RC_BlueSteel/11

    Second Life RC LeTigre

LeTigre is returning to the "Mesh" project this week. LeTigre and Magnum will be running the same server version.

    • Mesh objects can be uploaded
    • Child prims can be set to have no collision shape (do not contribute to collision of object)
    • Objects that use the features above (mesh shapes or non-colliding parts) will have prim cost calculated based on actual impact to the parcel/region rather than simple count.
    • Max prim scale has been raised to 64m on a side
    • New physics engine
      • Overhaul how collision shapes are constructed and stored in memory.
      • 10 cm gap between colliding objects has been removed for most objects:
        • For convex prims (dynamic and static)
        • Concave prims (static only)
        • For small prims ( <~0.2m on a side ) it can't be completely removed so those objects may still exhibit a gap, but it will typically be smaller than it was before the change.
    • Parcel-full return sort order has changed: most recently "changed" get returned first, but still grouped by OTHER, GROUP, and OWNER in that order.

    Second Life RC Magnum

Once again, Magnum is on the "Mesh" project this week. There are no changes related to mesh this week; the update just adds the changes listed for the main channel.

See the 'Second Life RC LeTigre' section above to see a general list of changes in Mesh; Magnum and LeTigre will get the same server version.

    Update! (2011-08-16 16:10 PDT) :

Due to last minute issues in mesh testing, both the LeTigre and Magnum RC channel updates for this week have been rescheduled for this Thursday (August 18), at 8:00AM and 9:00AM PDT, respectively.  We apologize for the late notice.

Thanks, the permissions fix works well and there are some great new script features.

llSetMemoryLimit() appears to work as far as llGetFreeMemory() and llGetUsedMemory() are concerned, which should help a lot with objects that have many small scripts. I've heard that OBJECT_SCRIPT_MEMORY with llGetObjectDetails() is still supposed to return 65536 at this time, as well as the memory count in Viewer 2, for any mono script. Do you know if setting a lower memory limit actually lowers the amount reserved on the server, even though the reporting tools don't see any difference?

Using llSetMemoryLimit() to lower your script's memory footprint also lowers the amount of memory reported by OBJECT_SCRIPT_MEMORY and the 'script info' interface.  The lower limits are also enforced - if you have a small script and set its memory limit to be slightly more the current memory usage, then e.g. allocate a large string, the script will hit a stack/heap collision, even if total memory usage is less than 64kB.

  9. Good catch, Acheron; the release notes for scripting maintenance are incomplete.  Here's the rest:

    New features:

    * Added a new flag to llGetObjectDetails(), OBJECT_SCRIPT_TIME, which reports the average script CPU time (in seconds) an object/avatar is using.  This function returns the same time that you would see in 'Top Scripts'.

    * Added a new function, llGetMemoryLimit(), which returns the maximum memory a script can allocate (see llSetMemoryLimit() ).

    Bug Fixes:

    * Fixed a bug "Some prim properties are not copied on prim-copy"

    * Fix for SVC-7060 "Reliable message RevokePermissions does not revoke permissions on objects that have been granted PERMISSION_TRIGGER_ANIMATION"

    * LSL functions which have physical effects now scrub non-finite input (Inf and NaN)

  10. There will be an emergency rollback in the LeTigre and Magnum channels this morning, due to a high crash rate on those channels.  Until now, these channels were running "mesh prep 2": http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Beta/LeTigre#11.06.28.234198

After the rollback, both channels will be running the same server version as the "Second Life Server" channel, which is 11.06.29.234329.

You can monitor the status of the rollback here:
