  1. Not since the lamentations of William McGonagall, which this far surpasses in that respect, have I been able to utter the lines, "I really can't tell you what a pleasure that was, really."
  2. There was a guy at our school we nicknamed Wagon because he could slide a whole Wagon Wheel into his mouth, close it and then retrieve it without there being a bite mark upon it. To top it off he would then flip it 90 degrees upright and enclose the rim of the Wagon Wheel within his lips without breaking it. You don't get invention and entertainment like that anymore; I blame video games!
  3. JeanneAnne wrote: "In your egalitarian efforts, would residents of SL become equally responsible for paying for servers, facilities, payroll, benefits and all other associated costs of running a free to users, entertainment service?" Yes. All users would pay a modest fee. The people elected by users to run the user owned non-profit cooperative that replaces LL would determine operating costs and spread these costs equitably among all users. Since parasites (executives, shareholders) had been eliminated, overall costs to run SL would be reduced. Jeanne Lol, so every person who is using SL for free at the moment under your system will overnight have to start paying a fee, whilst all those who are contributing at the moment will get a reduction and you expect the freeloaders to all of a sudden start willingly paying a "modest" fee because they are now playing in an enlightened and egalitarian virtual world? This will lead to less people logging in, therefore higher costs on the remaining funders who will in turn throw the towel in too. Seriously you need to take your head out of the economic theories of collectives and start reading up on human psychology and basic mathematics. First off, if you wanted to own LL as a collective entity you may be surprised to learn that LL wouldn't oppose you. Just pay them enough to buy the company and they'll sell it to you given the right price. I trust that in your grand scheme you've already got $100million + in your bank account ready to pay over because I can't imagine that a) you would go to investment bankers to raise the money or b) they would lend to you if you did. Or do you want us all (free players too) to start paying you the money now upfront whilst at the same time paying LL? Of course you'll be funding the company at a loss for quite a long time afterwards as you try to convince/direct all SL residents to start paying into the collective pool or leave SL when they could could easily walk across the virtual highway to InWorldz say and freeload over there. I could go on, but as you can see your idealism depends on magiced up untainted, in your eyes, money and everybody sharing the same views and committment as you...which just ain't so.
  4. Biscuits = cookies and are eaten by themselves, with tea, coffee or milk (hot or cold) and broken up for cheesecake bakes at least in the UK. And, as any Aussie will tell you, I can be a whingeing Pom or a whinging Pom.

John McCain advocated it's return, Obama is already preparing a form of it and the UK and many European countries are enacting very similar systems of splitting a bank's investment arm off from it's commercial and public savings and lending operations.
  6. Maelstrom Janus wrote: I have no argument with anyone who thinks building outside sl using a mass of complex software and then paying to import the stuff they made is a way of being 'drawn into' SL ...my problem with mesh has always been - and its quite obvious - that while Lindens have promoted mesh it took away the onus on them to provide building software - even the lindens 'tutorial' on mesh was nothing more than a warning about copyright breaches - no advice on the software to use or how to go about making mesh based items ! It also caused a total stasis in inworld building with nothing new ( bar the introduction of 64 m prims as standard - still not big enough !) when we could be getting new methods of shaping and cutting prims, newly shaped prims etc. Lindens should be providing the tools to build with in view of the fees they charge and they should be adding new features to those building systems to keep the art of inworld building alive and vibrant. The introduction of mesh basically stopped any development with the inworld building system at all. And as a result in world building is becoming dull and repetitive..... Mesh takes away the pleasure of inworld building and turns building into labouring over complex software only to then pay to import something you dont even know is going to look good once it arrives in world. Interesting points you raise and not something I'd fully considered before Maelstrom. I know there are some much vaunted "powerful creator tools" in the pipeline from LL, but I don't imagine for one moment that it would be an inworld mesh tool.
  7. You can't beat a good Hob Nob in any of its varieties closely followed by a chocolate digestive. Anything else is just for guests or parties. I am at the moment though taken by a new product, which I'm not sure whether it is a biscuit or not and that is the new Crunchie Bar biscuit. Biscuit or not I'm pretty sure they're taking me to my first coronary. Biscuit humour....
  8. Haven't tried using it any builds yet as I'll admit I have problems constraining the LI and/or the uploader seems to have a mind of its own at times. As has been reported elsewhere and before, you preview an upload and get one amount, wait 5 mins repeat it with the same object and get a different value, sometimes by wildly different factors. I'm know it's the future and there is no doubt that the end effects are far superior and I'll buckle down to it at sometime, though I'm spending most of my time in InWordlz at the moment so I'm not compelled to learn it there. As for mesh clothes they are by far superior to layers or sculpts. I've bought quite a lot, but for men there is nowhere near the range and variety that there is out there for females at the moment and because of the alpha masks and avatar deforming issues I'm laying off buying anymore until the parametric deformer is introduced and widespread. If I could express the difference in pics then this should explain it. You in mesh... You in sculpts...
  9. I'm following the primaries at the moment and my only hope is that Ron Paul will have a good enough showing throughout them that his campaign won't falter till the convention at least. I'm really intrigued by Ron Paul since he first came to my attention through some political blogs over here [uK] and Jon Stewart highlighting the fact that Fox News were going out of their way to ignore him or give him any spotlight in their coverage. It seems to me that the more people are exposed to Ron Paul the more they like him and this maybe a point the right wing media are keenly aware of. To my mind he is the only true Republican running, based on their historic principles, since Eisenhower. The rest are just pseudo Christian fundamentalists, Tea Party lap dogs and right wing media cookie cutter candidates. There's a touch of the Josiah Bartlet about Paul in terms of trust and integrity and his team really should be building and capitalising on that. From what I've seen he's the only one who could go toe to toe with Obama in a debate on issues and present a plausible alternative and have a credible track record of views and voting records behind him. As a natural left winger myself I could never vote for him, but if there were to be a Republican President then I'd rather him than any of the other shower of bought up and sold out reprobates. Sadly though he does not enjoy the widespread support or funding of those two pervading spectres of democracy that Eisenhower warned of so many years ago; the military-industrial complex. Add to that fact that most Republicans voting in the primaries will no doubt be watching and reading right wing media, that goes out of its way to dismiss him, then I'm afraid Ron Paul really is battling against a stacked deck. I wish him the best of luck because he sure as Hell is going to need it and he deserves it.
  10. From what you are saying it sounds like they are attacking the sim's servers, which not being an expert I'm not sure how they would do, but I would think that it would have LL responding to it as a high priority as it is an attack on their core systems. Otherwise from what you said I can only think that it is somebody or people who have group rez and script abilities and is able to grief the sim with the usual tools. I'm sure other people will have more insight than me, but thanks for adding the extra info/detail and good luck to you.
  11. What exactly are they doing to grief you? You mention that they are a hacker/griefer. Are they hacking your PC or using tools to grief your sim inworld? If the latter what are they doing? Knowing that might help people give you suggestions for mitigating it.

We're supposed to read it? ToS for most of us means "Tick-Ok-Submit" and lemme haz my toyz! I'd be confident to wager that 99% of SL users have never read the ToS and if LL put it up in Swahili or Mongolian as default then 99% of people would still sign it without reading.

And now I'm reading things that seems to suggest that either the situation will remain as is or Linden Lab is looking at the issue again and may indeed add language translations, but it's hard to tell because some of the posts are vague and/or contradictory. Where are we? Same place we were at the start, but we at least got some speed up to crash into the same wall from where we started.

Which Linden has contacted you so we may know? I thought Irene Muni gave you all that information and links some 12hrs before you posted this...? I see nothing extra that a Linden may have informed you about or gone out of their way to tell you that you hadn't already been told or could have found out yourself? The Spanish version of the ToS is not "hard to find" it's linked in the JIRA and can be easily found by typing Spanish ToS in the Wiki search. If you had read the JIRA though, and I'm surprised "your" Linden didn't tell you this, that particular Spanish translation is now out of date. Another factor LL would have to consider everytime there is the slightest change required in their ToS.

Because worlds feel most vibrant when they are full of life, one of our next focuses for Second Life is the ability to make high-quality “life” within it. So in 2012, we will be rolling out more advanced features that will allow the creation of artificial life and artificial people to be much smoother. For starters, in Q1, we'll unveil a new, robust pathfinding system that will allow objects to intelligently navigate around the world while avoiding obstacles.Combined with the tools from Linden Realms this will make the polished creation of full MMORPG’s or people/animal simulators within Second Life easier and of high quality. This would be perhaps my biggest concern. I can see a specific benefit for some types of role play SIMS. But when I am out and about I want to interact with real people, not robots. When I go clubbing, I dont want to be dancing with a bunch of robots. So while I can see a limited use for this, I don't want to be exploring a mainland infested with robots. Just think how nuts it could drive you if they are so well done that you couldn't distinguish them at first glance from REAL AVATARS. And if they are clearly distinguishable, then I'd feel like I was just playing some 3D shoot em up game on my computer. Second Life to me is about interacting with real people. Play WoW or any other online MMO game that has NPCs, they stick out like a sore thumb because they are conceived to be that way. Any front end development would ensure that, what a back end TP would is of course unknown, but in my life I've had few opportunities to employ the Turing Test so I welcome the introduction of our new AI NPC masters.

Rod did come from a games company but that doesn't mean that games are what he's all about. It just means is that he has a good understanding of games behind the scenes. I don't assume that Realms is a step towards SL becoming a games platform. I see it merely as a positive step towards something that SL should have had for a very long time, but the powers that be at LL were clueless. When new people sign up, there was absolutely nothing for them to do. Nothing. Unless a person knows what SL actually is in advance, s/he will expect there to be something to do. Realms provides something to do - something to occupy and benefit new people while they are getting a handle on what SL actually is. If anyone tried to come up with something for people to do while they are getting used to SL, I think most would come up with some some of reward scheme, which is what Realms is. We agreed on that not long ago, before any of us had heard of Realms. And I think that most people would come up with making it some sort of game in which users can gain rewards. It didn't need anyone from a games company to come up with that sort of idea. So I don't see Realms as an indication that LL is moving SL towards being a games platform. I might wrong, of course, but I don't see it that way. Incidentally, LL needs to hire somone with an imagination. Calling it Linden Realms? What a silly idea. "Realms" is good name for a game but not "Linden Realms". Absolutely, the first hit is for free, once you love it you'll pay for it. (Meant earnestly) I don't fear Rod coming from games background I welcome it. Games companies have been the pioneers of incorporating high end graphics and physics into a limited environment and getting players immersed into environment quickly. SL suffers from graphics and retention of new users, it does though have a committed long-term user base that surpasses most if not all games and a user base that builds the products it wants. A hybrid of the two would be an interesting and progressive development of SL.

Rod's a game developer, wants to make SL a games platform and LL a games company. That's not what I want for it/them but whatever happens I hope it works well for them. SL does need more strategies, as after awhile it gets very boring, such as I feel I'm just listening to the radio *yawn*. SL is mindless entertainment for those who do not create content, like me. It's just too boring as it is, and the role play sims seem to be pretty empty or very gorey and creepy. Linden Realms seems like a start, but don't treat us like mindless idiots and expect a sort of listening to the radio with visuals as an entertainment that will keep us here. SL is far too mindless. And, I don't like hunts. I don't want a bunch of heavy prim items I can't use or a bunch of clothes I may not like. Residents do need something to engage our minds before we are bored to death.
