    Viewer 2.4 Released!

I haven't checked it out yet, but thanks to LL coders for the external editor effort! Losing scripts sucks and I had a few recent inventory or other (sim restarts?) isues and lost codeas items disapeared from my inventory. This will help with the current more complex projects I am planning...well, if I ever get around to them.

Oh, since I am giving out compliments...well, thanks for ATI shadow enablement. I get like 3 fps sometimes, but it is great for photography. Load it all up and then hit the menu option and slowely frame a shot or two and it is useful for even the lower end PC's! I have heard ATI are secretive and non standard etc., so thanks again for that work!

  1. If you crank the slider up and can't walk but want to, turn it down again. If you want to get rid of grey prims faster and don't mind getting stalled, then leave it high. BUT, if you keep adjusting and experimenting you will get some kind of happy settings you like.

Here is what I use and why. 200 for driving. Why? I dont' care about grey and much and there are very few textures at the low lag tracks I go to! So not so much to stay grey for to long. Plus, I drive with it all grey sometimes and adjust the light. WHy? Faster lap times! I turn of textures downloading, but this is all geeky settings in the advanced and develope menus'...so I will not mention that.

Ok, now if I am shopping and really want to see some stuff I will stand and turn up the network speed to 300+. Why? I dont' need to walk or move so much and I will stand and let it bog down my PC's system bus( an aging single CPU relic with a lower than one gig system bus..um, slow pipes between math stuff and memory is the basic description) so..well, I dont' have one setting and you might also be the same! Then agian, maybe you have three! Like if you share your network through a LAN(9Router or gateway thingy)then you will basically be sort of dealing with people complaining if you have sub 3mb and they want to get a big big file. SO, you might drop it to like 200 kbs (liek I do, but my ISP runs only about 300kbs max!)to allow them more bandwidth to get thier files faster!

But basically, if you experiment you will see what works for you and also know that by lowering it you are asking for less from your ISP's given bandwidth. All the rest sort of makes sense, details on FPS or whatever can be worked out by your own sight and not much geekery is needed unless you really need to get geeky for top performance. My advice then is use Disable Textures in the advanced and develope menu. But once again, this gets to geeky I bet and I bet you have faster than 300kb and dont' race around tracks much in SL lol.

If that didn't help, I am sorry. The technical stuff is not as important really because there are a lot of factors.

  2. Lance is possibly getting at the fact different modems, ISP's etc. will all make thier impact. If you have a ISP that only gives you 500kbs I don't think you will be able to walk well at 1000kbs in SL. Waiting for stuff to load might have not been a huge big deal before, but now textures disapear faster and are occluded etc. So you THINK you can walk well, only to be slammed into a pause as your ISP chokes it all off and your pitiful 128kbs upload etc. all scream into a mess with your slow system bus wailing and thowing a jolty hissy fit when you push a bunch of stuff into it's memory and expect it to still do all that stuff it does to keep your systems hamptster wheel turning....I speak from experience here! More than you ISP allows is BAD and will stop you from walking!

To be honest, I am not not sure why they never implememnted a simply auto detect. I mean, when we where getting packet loses those where packets sent by the server. The server worked for nothing, right? Doesn't that take CPU cycles and bandwidth from the server for no reason? So....Why not just autodetect it better and do away with arcane methods of perforamnce defaults that are made up to hit an average or means middle? Come on LL, you really don't have a dude how can spend a few hours to code this and spend a little on hardware testing to figure this all out? I bet they did it, which is why they went with the 500Kbs minimum. BUT, like I said....why not just auto set it so that the guys with lower speeds are not requesting stuff they can't handle! Thier bad experience is only taking away CPU cycles from the other guys who could have it cranked higher and be enjoying it a tiny itty bit more while helping the slower connections walk and use SL! Yeah, they don't bother so much. I know someone personally who I said "Hey check out SL" and they said is sucked because they couldn't walk and didn't have time to mess with it! That day, that person was using resources and losing packets that could have been used AND those pckets etc. all just lagged him to where he couldn't even get it! Some people sit with draw distance down and stream music with thier SL and chat...simple stuff. They don't need 500kbs+ to do that, they barely need to walk even....but I mean 100KB will really make it hard to move around for them!

Now they changed it a bit, from what I gather. But seriusly, if they couldn't fix it when it would have helped wealthier faster ISP using residents who pay them more money, what the heck are they going to do now lol. To little to late, and not meant in an insulting way. If I could fix it, I would. This is beyond third party stuff for me as it requires a freaking server to test and a way to test hardware configs.....seriously, I bet there are companies who make a living doing this stuff for companies and there must also be virtual machine based testing stuff out here already. THey already have the smart people to code it, just needs a nod and gruelling hardware faking number crunching....nothing a few hundred nerds can't handle in a day. Why is this still not done? Simple math, why bother! Fix the stuff so packets don't get lost as much and you have 2 birds with one stone via a simple defaualt speed? Maybe they fired the guys who worked on that as it is not a huge help, we have Torley and a bunch of forum geeks to argue it all out for free lol. ;P

Now, seriously.....which one of us will dig out the speed testing API and find a sponser that will work with LL?

Should I order brunch so we can all discuss ad space with this new bandwidth testing partner? /me shouts"waiter!...um...Garcon! maybe he can't hear me because I don't know the asciunicode little 5 thingy on that one letter in french "sacrar blur!"

Hey, maybe one of you will also find a taker for doing hardware testing....not sure of any discount, but maybe some small team might like the work in this economy and the addition of a the logo as a badge of honor! Come on, you can't find anyone who wants some neato futuristic virtual world as thier customer and offer a discount!?

/me wonders off to get food and avoid arguing with voices eminating from walls and surrounding noisy machinery.
