  1. I'm in Britain. Ping time right now for me 21 m/s, download time 583 Mb/s and upload 52 Mb/s. I reckon that's a pretty good internet connection. So slow SL performance since PBR must have some other cause.
  2. I use advanced lighting (shadows etc.) most of the time and it worked OK up until the PBR viewer came along. Now, turning off advanced lighting and setting other graphics to minimum doesn't improve the slow rezzing or non-rezzing, it's just as bad as with advanced.
  3. For me, the start of the problem coincided with downloading the PBR viewer. I wouldn't say rez times were wonderful beforehand, but they got a whole lot worse with the PBR viewer. I can understand that PBR isn't the cause, but some aspect of the viewer update must have been.
  4. I re-read that post. I'm not against PBR, I want to see it work well on my computer. The slow rezzing of textures might not be caused by PBR directly, but the change to texture fetching was bundled in with the viewer. My computer is 5 years old and it was quite high-end when I got it and there has been no deterioration in its overall performance, only the problems with the PBR viewer. I have a fast broadband connection (578 Mb/s). The only thing I can think of that might be suspect is the connection between computer and monitor, which I'll check again!
  5. That explains it - my graphics card is Radeon. I don't have too much of a problem with frame rate - although it's quite low it still gives smooth movement. The problem is more to do very slow rezzing of textures of environment and even slower rezzing of avatars. As I've said before, this is even the case when I reduce graphics setting to minimum.
  6. There was an update to the PBR viewer yesterday. One of the fixes in the release notes was fixing "massive performance loss". Sadly, for me the update has made no difference.
  7. The problems of very slow rezzing of environment and non-rezzing of avatars in any place where there are more than half a dozen started (or got much worse) with the PBR viewer. Even setting graphics to minimum makes little or no difference. This has persisted since the PBR viewer was released for the main grid. I think there has been one update since the introduction, which made no difference to the poor performance. I tried third party viewers, which restored performance to 'good' until I started getting 'failed to find xxxx in inventory' messages. So now I'm back with the PBR viewer, unable to go anywhere that there might be more than a couple of other people. I haven't had a crashing problem with the PBR viewer though. It would be interesting and useful for someone to create an alt to go through the new user experience using the current viewer and report back. I might even try that myself if things don't improve in the next week or two.
  8. I tried out PBR on the Beta Grid and didn't have any of the problems I've had with it on the main grid. But - on the Beta Grid I wasn't in music club with 8 people in it!
  9. I have the same problem - blurred profile pic but sharp when enlarged. I haven't updated my profile pic recently though. I often see the same when looking at other people;s profiles.
  10. I've just been to a club with about 15-20 people in. It was just a simple building with a few plants and bits of furniture. Using the LL PBR viewer I found that . . . The building rezzed but its textures took ages to load. Most avatars rezzed eventually but for most of them their textures never loaded so they stayed grey (not jellydolls though). A couple of avatars stayed as white clouds. Lag for movement was not too bad.
  11. I'm still finding that LL's latest PBR viewer is much slower than the previous v.6 one. Going anywhere that is even slightly busy means that avatars and surroundings take ages to rez and some textures never rez. I think there has been one update of the PBR viewer but that didn't show any improvement in performance. Turning down the graphics to minimum appears to make no difference to performance, it's still really slow. Re the old EEP settings - I found they were messed up with PBR but I made some new settings which look fine.
  12. "Woot!" That seems to be an SL word, although there's not much cause for wooting these days as by the time everything that's going to rez has done so, the 'woot' moment has long passed or went un-noticed.šŸ˜Ÿ
  13. I'm struggling to think of any adult activity that isn't possible already in SL - not that I indulge in many of them personally, of course!
  14. Goes to show you can never be too careful! Whenever you're with other people, you need to be very careful what you stand in front of, behind, next to or under or you could end up on the front page of a daily paper accused of some made-up scandal. šŸ˜šŸ˜‚
  15. Agreed - but they also allow for greater realism if that's what you want.
  16. Since I came to SL in 2006 there have been many improvements intended to make the visual experience more realistic. These include: Windlight environments with shadows - a definite improvement over the previous basic flat lighting. Mesh - more realistic objects. Whether it's made avatars more realistic depends on the skill of the creator, how the owner adjusts the shape and what skin they use. Projector lights - more realistic artificial lighting. PBR - looks promising if there's no downside - e.g. lag.
  17. I'd be happy with 'fully realistic' if it worked properly without any lag but I guess we're still quite a long way away from that being possible. And even then, if you have a fully realistic human avatar, you could find yourself dancing next to a Snoopy or Spongebob Squarepants avatar. So the next question that needs to be answered is: what would a fully realistic Spongebob look like? Would it look like the original cartoon or would it look like what a real anthropomorphic sponge wearing shorts would look like in real life?
  18. Best to be a bit wary of this robot when it's dancing, it being over 9ft tall and with a spike-ball for its right hand. This robot is not aggressive but it is quite clumsy. I have to say the polished aluminium looks good with PBR.
  19. Happy birthday! I've also passed the 17 year mark in SL recently. If you'd discovered that Wiki page 17 years ago, your whole SL experience might have been completely differentšŸ¤£
  20. As I mentioned in another thread, I downloaded the Cool VL viewer, and after lowering the maximum frame rate as suggested, it works well in busy places.
  21. The lighting effects with PBR are really good, with realistic reflections on existing shiny objects. It does mess up existing daylight settings though, so you have to make new ones. Also I found that adjusting daylight settings appears to affect the brightness of artificial lights. The downside of PBR, at least with the current release, is that rezzing times are much slower, both for avatars and for the built surroundings. This is even the case when graphics set to minimum. I generally use the LL standard viewer and it had been fine up until this PBR release.
  22. I set the frame rate to 30 and the fan has calmed down a bit. Movement is smooth and things rez reasonably fast. Thanks.
  23. I tried the updated Senra Jamie body and head on a test alt. It's an improvement over the first version - especially the mouth and nose. Sadly, it's still too far from my current shape (which I more-or-less want to keep) however much I play around with the sliders.
  24. Since the the PBR viewer is almost unusable unless you're on your own in a quiet place, due to slow very rezzing, I thought I'd try the Cool viewer. I downloaded it and it worked fine, even in busy places with high graphics. I did have to stop using it though as the fan on my computer was humming louder than I've ever heard it before!
