  1. Or you could, you know, just politely approach one of us and chat for a bit.  Most of us are more than happy to discuss the fandom in general and our individual stories in particular.

As long as you're polite and genuinely curious I'd say this would be your best bet. (Just be aware that many furries have been ridiculed, harassed and stereotyped in SL and may be a bit wary of your questions at first until they feel that you're sincerely seeking knowledge)

  2. Amethyst if you think you're endangered, I just checked and there are only 8 Kasshikis that still show up in search out of 245 originally! Sadly, I can't recall ever meeting a "family member" during my years in SL.

I guess those of us with surnames are slowly but surely going the way of the dinosaurs. It's kind of sad that this part of SL's rich history will soon be... um, history and that the newer people who might have wanted a surname never got the chance.

Wow, I feel so old and alone now. :smileysad:

  3. Looking at the OP's posted specs I stand by my original appraisal of her problem. Her poor graphics and lag issues are tied together in that her computer system is using an outdated low-end processor, slow integrated graphics and only 3 GB of memory. It's basically a netbook (a stripped down, cheap portable system) that's ok for web browsing and email but definitely not for graphically complex games.

The reason I mentioned a wired connection was based on the fact that her network info showed dropped packets. This is typical of wireless connections. Unlike many online games that stream data at constant low rates or in short bursts, SL transmits a very constant stream of large amounts of data. It requires a good deal of bandwidth and a consistent connection. I know this from experience. Years ago I tried running SL over a solid wireless connection but I was still getting a lot of lag that I knew others weren't. I knew my computer was well above the minimum requirements so, I checked further. I found that my wireless router was dropping anywhere from 0.1% to 10% of data packets. Different wireless routers gave me similar performance. It's just the nature of the beast. Losing a packet here and there doesn't matter much for browsing or email but when streaming HD videos or playing SL it mattered a lot. Once I switched to a wired connection there was 0 packet loss and my SL experience has been fantastic ever since.

  4. The AMD E-300 is an older, very low-end processor designed for netbooks and smaller laptops. It was designed more with low battery usage rather than performance in mind.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, from what I read your E-300 (and its integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics) are only slightly above the performance of what would be found in a very basic netbook. In other words, you have a low cost, low-end processor with equally low-end built-in graphics that will never allow you to see SL with advanced lighting and shadows as in the example picture you posted. Your hardware just isn't powerful enough. The E-300 is meant for very basic computing only and not gaming. This is likely also the cause of your lag, although you may be able to get slightly better performance using a wired connection (if you aren't already) and adding more memory (if possible).

If you want to see SL as in the example you posted you'll need to look at a more powerful computer with discrete (separate) graphics card. Good luck in your search.

I kind of doubt that this so-called "new generation", who are more casual gamers accustomed to F2P or $2.99 apps, will be very gung ho to pony up an hourly fee to connect to a 10 year old virtual world with a questionable reputation. SL ain't Candy Crush.

I'd also remind you that OnLive has yet to prove that their concept has a viable market and has gone under once. If streaming PC games to low-powered mobile devices was such a big deal, why hasn't OnLive generated massive buzz? Where are the crowds clamoring for this service? Where are the tech gurus hyping this as the next paradigm shift? Where are the investors? Most of all, where are the
    paying customers

Call me a member of the Geritol set all you like but, I know a bad idea when I see one and this is a bad idea. Just because people have been asking about SL on tablets and phones for a while doesn't suddenly and automatically make this a viable business.

I knew something was missing from the discussion but I could not remember what it was. Thank you for refreshing my memory (I need to increase my Geritol dosage, probably).

You're right. Without somebody talking about a paradigm shift it's as if nothing has even happened!

Assuming you're being sarcastic you've ignored the other far more important points I made.

  7. I think others have summed it up with regards to playing complex games on small screens and the pricing model so, I'll just add my "meh" to the mix. This seems like a rather niche offering for a narrow range of use cases. I know I wouldn't pay hourly fees to log into SL from my iPhone.

I understand that right now mobile computing is the hot ticket but, I think LL would better spend its limited resources by tackling longstanding technical issues (like group chat or sim crossings), virtual land pricing, more effective marketing, user retention or, some really groundbreaking new technology. .

Maybe this will take off (once expanded to more markets and iOS devices) but, I just don't see it happening.

  8. I'd take Perrie's suggestion and file a bug report with the Firestorm dev team about this issue. They have an in-world support chat channel you can join and speak to volunteers about this and some of the devs also monitor the group. Good luck!

  9. Looks like I'm a bit late to the party but, I'd also like to welcome Ebbe to Second Life. It's great to see you communicating with us via the official SL forums.

I have no sage wisdom to offer or any action items to suggest be added to your calendar Ebbe but, I'd ask one thing of you; please don't ignore us, your customers. Yes, some of us have agendas and pet peeves and strong opinions but, we can also offer years of experience, institutional memory, differing perspectives and (hopefully) fresh insights into various aspects that affect the platform. What we suggest may not always be technically feasible or make sense from a business perspective but, please let's engage in an ongoing dialog.

I've been in world since 2006. I've seen SL go through the media-fueled boom times, the subsequent bust, virtual land bubbles, major technical issues and way more controversies than I can remember. Through all of that I, like many other longtime customers, remain because I enjoy all of the craziness, creativity and freedom that SL offers. I want SL to be around far into the future. Please try to keep an open mind and where it's possible and makes sense, seriously consider what we have to say. Thanks for listening and here's hoping for a brighter future for SL and the Lab!

  10. We could do away with so much of this smoke and mirrors nonsense if the Lab would simply focus on the most basic part of the user experience; the avatar itself. The low poly avatar is the one thing that hasn't been touched in the entire existence of SL and it BADLY needs to be updated. I understand that drastic changes could break a lot of existing content but, wouldn't it at least be possible to add a few polys in strategic problem areas (like the crotch, elbow joint, etc.)? Would taking an intermediate step like this mitigate a lot of problems while not breaking existing content?

I really think that updating the base avatar should be a high priority for the devs.

  11. As a longtime paying premium customer I don't feel that I should have to depend on Twitter, Facebook, SLU or any other third party site as the primary communications venue for news from the Lab. Important information such as a change in leadership should be happening on official LL sites first and the social media and third party forums secondarily. What's the point in even having an official LL website otherwise?

While I'm happy to hear that the new CEO has already started to engage some of us via social media and third party forums, I hope that he'll also use the official LL properties to speak with us as well.
