  1. Joined in September 2006 so it will be 11 years for me next month.

I read about SL in Macworld magazine and decided to check it out because there were Star Trek and Star Wars RP groups. Something about the freedom to be whatever type of resident I wanted and the free-form nature of the game hooked me and I've been here ever since.

  2. I just wanted a name that sounded vaguely exotic and ethnic so I picked Kasshiki from the list of last names. Deej (from D.J. my RL nickname and pronounced 'Deezh') seemed to go well with it although these days with all the people around calling themselves DJ this or that, if I had to do it over again I'd have likely gone with something different.

  3. Mesh just isn't the end-all, be-all that the OP thinks it is. Mesh has many significant limitations which others have noted. For me the showstopper is that using it requires expertise in multiple, complex out of game software packages. Using prims I can simply log into SL and slap down a handful of objects to make a useful piece of furniture, for example. No need for competence in Blender, Maya, Photoshop or 3DStudio Max, just playing around with simple geometric shapes. To me, this is the ethos of SL.

Call me old school or a dinosaur if you like but I still use and wear non-mesh items everyday. As long as they work for me I'll keep using them.

  4. Talking in-between (not over) the music and interacting with the crowd is fine with me. If you have a live DJ why not have them speak? It just makes sense and increases engagement (in the form of traffic to the club and tips for the DJ). If not for the interaction between the DJ and the club goers you might as well just run an internet radio stream.

How about being very pleased that you've enjoyed SL for almost 8 years, and the cost of the enjoyment is the money you spent having that enjoyment. When looked at that way, it's been incredibly cheap enjoyment, even if you don't get anything back by moving stuff from SL1 to SL2.

I'm not saying that I haven't, Phil. Of course I have. I just want to know where my wants/needs/desires figure in in this brave new landscape. I'm not asking for a refund or anything of the sort. I just don't want to be left out in the forthcoming discussion because so far all I'm hearing about is how the new shiny will be content creation foicused.

  6. I keep hearing about how this new platform will focus on content creators as king. I want to know is how us poor schmucks (like me who have shelled out real money for almost 8 years now as a Premium member) who aren't merchants will figure into the equation? The fact that the CEO spoke first with the "opinion leaders and VIPs" over at SLU speaks volumes, IMO.

Yeah I know that without content there's no VW but, I also know that without people to create for there's likewise no VW.  Sorry but, I don't want to be seen as just another "consumer"; an ignorant open maw that takes whatever gets shovelled down its throat, important only because it has a wallet attached to it.

All I know for sure is that whatever LL is working on had better be damned compelling for me to give up potentially 8 years plus worth of accumulated knowledge (and inventory) and they'd better start making that case as soon as possible. Otherwise as news of this gets more widely distributed people will panic and will start making plans to leave what will be seen as a sinking ship.

Exactly Phoebe. I am not saying this is a bad thing in the long run, but I am trying to figure out how I am going to manage the expense of having two stores open at the same time for an extended period, to say nothing of how I would find the time, when I barely have time as it is.  I would rather they just open it up and close SL rather than drag it out.

But something tells me they are not terribly interested in the impact migration will have on merchants like me.

Something tells me that LL isn't terribly interested in the impact migration will have on any of us! Heck, they can't even be bothered to post any kind of official response on their own user forums.

At this point I feel like the old goose being coerced into squeezing out one last golden egg in order to pay for a new goose.

  8. There are many factors that affect the FPS you get in SL. In your testing are you in a crowded sim with many complex items that need to be rendered? Are there a lot of mesh items in the scene? If you haven't already try testing in less crowded areas and/or areas with less content to render and compare your results.

The largest factor may be your ATI/AMD drivers. ATI/AMD's drivers are pretty notorious for not playing well with SL due to their less than optimal support of OpenGL, the graphics standard used by SL. You may need to test using different versions of the Catalyst drivers to see if that has any affect on your performance. Also, if your video card is a very new model, it may not be listed in SL's graphics card tables which wouldn't allow the viewer to fully understand the features and capabilities of your video card.

You'll need to do a little more testing and give us a few more details before we can give you anything more definitive.

  9. Pussycat I always leave my (non-Retina) 15" MBP in automatic mode and have never had any issues with it switching to the integrated graphics while doing anything intensive but if you're concerned you can go into the System Preferences > Energy Saver and uncheck the box to turn off automatic graphics switching. I'd also advise against switching the resolution to anything other than the native high resolution as things will look horrible and pixellated as the display has to "fake" a lower resolution. (This is true for any LCD display. Try switching to say 1024x768 and see how distorted everythiing looks to see what I mean.)

  10. That area of "jaggies" that you see in the screenshot is due to not having your anti-aliasing (a technique to smooth hard edges) enabled or set high enough.

I don't use the LL viewer but, on my TPV you can access the advanced hardware settings by clicking the Hardware button in the graphics window. Once there you should be able to set the anti-aliasing to 2x, 4x, etc. Unless you have a really stout video card I wouldn't go above 4x or your performance will tank and in some cases crash your viewer.

Also, keep in mind that the photos you referenced were most likely edited and enhanced using a graphics program like Photoshop, GIMP, etc. and what you see normally onscreen will never look that great without major manipulation (just like RL models never look as perfect on the street as they do in the glossy pages of a magazine).

  11. I share your pain, OP.

I used to do a lot of sailing, flying and driving all over the mainland. The primary reason I stopped was due to the very problematic sim crossings at the time but, the secondary reason was what the OP wrote about. Even at several thousand meters high people have security orbs in skyboxes with absolutely no delay before ejecting.

I understand that people want their virtual "privacy" and not be subject to griefers (despite the fact that there are many ways to circumvent door locks, security systems, etc.) but, their ability to keep people off their property ends at publically accessible Linden land, waterways and airspace.

I don't bother with banlines or security systems on my little mainland parcel to keep the area usable by anyone who wants to wander by. No one can steal anything and autoreturn is active so, the worst that happens is people close the blinds, leave doors open or change textures on furniture. To me, it's not a big deal to undo the changes and I've met a few really nice people who've wandered onto my parcel. For me the positives of keeping my land open far outweigh the negatives.

Is web search a guarantee of an account still being active or inactive?

If I recall correctly Web Search honors a persons desire if they mark their profile private.  Whereas Legacy Search which is still active in many TPV's does not.

I do know several other 'Jurans.'  A couple of years ago we decided to start a "Cousins Club" group.  We spent some time sending invitations out to other Juran's to the group.  Easily 90% of the profiles we viewed were completely blank and we only ever got one response.  Crazy.

I'd forgotten about the search privacy issue actually. There's no way of knowing if the 245 Kasshikis that show up in legacy search are active or not without contacting them or, checking groups to see whan the last login date was, at least as far as I know. I looked at about 25 last night (all created between the end of Sept. through early Oct. 2006) and all but 2 were totally blank profiles. I assume that these people simply created an account but didn't bother to stick around for whatever reason. Web search showed only 8 (including me).
