I suppose that the latter is true. The perspective I temporarily adopt in this thread is one that visitors to SL tended to develop in the past, coming to view SL as a giant sleaze fest; leave and never look back. Reviews like these ones from Mmorpg.com exemplify this perspective: Those reviews are a decade old, though. Here's a good review, to balance out the negativity: I have a hard time expressing myself, forgetting what I'm getting at... All of that is true, and I'm glad you're revealing this side of things to me, one I didn't see before. But it makes total sense. I asked a friend, that still occasionally plays SL, the same question I posed in this thread, and his response was "people are just stupid". I could have been content with that point of view, but I wanted to possibly make a fool of myself but be open to other points of view by asking here, also. It's true, that we come here to unwind and do things we cannot in the 1st life, so there is much more to it than at first meets the eye. You are right. Thank you for showing me my nearsightedness while not making me feel bad about it.

If I were to build and open a small museum dedicated to Carl Sagan, his greatest musings, his life, and his guidance for us as a species (so sorely needed at this juncture in the history of humanity), would it not stay somewhere really far down the line, in terms of traffic? While places dedicated to sex and mindless shopping would infinitely stay at #1? Higher spheres of thought - place #100. Vanity and narcissism - #1. What does that say about us as people?

Can't find any good guides or YouTube videos on this, so am going ahead and asking the SL community directly. Inventory mayhem!

If you guys know of anyone really lonely in SL, please send them my way. Maybe I can create a little community for us.

Where do all the really lonely ones congregate? Those affected by racism in SL, the disabled, the depressed, the ultra shy? Where are you guys? I'm dying to be your friend. In fact, I'm thinking of creating a sort of weekly support group for us misfits (the Support group category of Events is empty, as it is). Often I log out of SL feeling worse than before I logged in. I don't think that that is how it should be. I'm lonely in RL as well. I've been through a lot, and I have great empathy for and understanding of all sorts of issues, and can offer that in a friendship. At the same time I'm healing from an injury that makes it difficult to communicate with people for too long. Sometimes it would be nice to explore sims with folks, without the expectation of lengthy conversations. The social climate in SL (and most other places I've played in) is standoffish, as well. I'm particularly sensitive to it and it makes it harder to make friends. I believe it has to do with the social climate of the world at large. Thanks for reading.

I made a mistake and processed $15 worth of Lindens into Credit. I've downgraded from Premium back to Basic, and will have no use for Credit. How can I get back my lindens?

Thank you so much for all these wonderful replies. They have whet my appetite for developing an eye for some great Hosting. Hosting is something unique to Second Life, correct? I can't think of any real life examples to compare it to. With this in mind, can someone break it down for me? What is the bare bones definition and PURPOSE of "hosting" in SL?

I'd like to attempt applying for in-world employment as a Hostess, but would not want to be a mediocre or lacklustre Host. Looking for stories of hosts that truly stand out to make a night memorable. Anyone could even give some examples of great hosts I should check out?

I'm in SL since 2004, came back again...after a long absence. This place just always draws me in. I'm currently watching a film noir, The Scrooge, at a movie theater in a great Irish sim, and wish that I had a friend to do this with. Hi guys. I'm playing again after a long time, and my skin is really outdated. I'm confused with all of the Catwa, Belleza, Freyas, etc. Can't understand the difference yet... I missed the whole classic avatar to mesh bodies transition, and it's not easy to get the hang of it all. All of the skins, so far, at Marketplace are Kim Kardashian & Co knockoffs, and I do hate these celebrities with a passion. I'm looking for something dewy, simple, and friendly-looking. Help.

I hope someone can guide me through this.. Let's say I have no coding or designing skills, and would be interested in making some semi-passive "income" using a 512 sqm of land. Hi, kind folk. I'm an SL oldie, returning to it once again. I have only two friends I rarely see online, and wanted to reach out here and see what happens. You can read my profile in-world to see what I'm about, but generally I love to just explore and soak in all the sensations and feelings that places and people evoke in me. I love things out of the ordinary, so no particular interest in clubs, sex, or shopping malls :matte-motes-nerdy: ! But may go there just out of curiosity (not sex though). I like RP but have not yet dabbled in it within SL :-) Open to using voice chat. Looking for intelligent people I can converse with. If possible, sensitive enough to understand or relate to the tendency to be isolated or depressed.
