  1. No, but you probably won't like the reality either. You can have anything you want as a display name. For example, you could be Daisy Q. Duck. And you can change the display name as often as once per week. But your user name does not go away. That will still be Fezspana.resident. (Oh...and you can't use "Linden" in your display name. That's considered impersonating a Linden). Other people can set their viewer preferences to show only display names, only user names, or both display and user names. With the latter, you are labeled as Daisy Q. Duck (Fezspana). "Resident" is still used by some legacy items, but I don't think it's actually shown in the viewer any more.

You can set the maximum avatar complexity you want your viewer to see in your graphics preferences. I recommend something just a bit less than "unlimited". If your performance is impacted too much, choose a lower setting.
  3. You CAN access your preferences. As Rolig said, open up the login window for the viewer. But instead of entering your user name and password, hit CTRL+P or go to Me > Preferences.
  4. No, it's not. I just tried un-checking the "Buying L$ in Second Life Viewer" box. I clicked OK. The box disappeared, but the information for my payment method did not change, and when I opened the box again, the checkbox was still checked.
  5. My four year old remark has been overcome by events. Please ignore.
  6. Arielle is right, my post is outdated. Unfortunately, you can't make sub-folders in the Outfits folder any more. But if you have any already existing, you can keep them.
  7. This message often appears if you rez a scripted item that is expecting to be attached to your avatar.
  8. I don't think you got my point. Someone in your audience can play a trick on you and blast you into the sky. Sitting on something prevents this.
  9. However you set it up, I have a piece of advice for you, if you have never taught in SL before: Sit on something. A chair, a poseball, a speaker's podium. The very first time I stood up to teach in front of a class, some clown orbited me and it took me five minutes to get back to the classroom.
  10. 1. How do you expect us to know, 5 or 10 years in advance, what the answer to your question will be? I assure you, we answered as best as we could at the time! 2. Yes there are, and most of them do it for free. You can find them right here in the Forums, or go to a user-run help area like Builders Brewery, NCI, Caledon Oxbridge University, or New Resident Island. Or go to Welcome Island and ask a Mentor.
  11. Check to see if you are actually signed in. If you visit the page as a "guest" you can only see G rated stuff. If you ARE signed in, then you may have run afoul of a random bug and will need to file a support case to get your maturity levels changed.
  12. ...comes out of retirement long enough to vote for "gantlet", then scoots her overly grammatical self back to RL. ...oh yeah, and gives Katherine a big warm gooey cookie for using "decimate" correctly. *Poof!*
  13. Land is billed separately from your Premium dues. Billing is in arrears, so it will begin one month after the date you buy the new parcel (I think). You can check this in Land Manager > My Mainland on your Dashboard page.
  14. Thank you, Fiona! I will definitely try to view distant things a lot more.
  15. Yes! It is definitely All My Fault! Thank you so much for the lovely farewell message. While I may have taught you something, you've taught me more.
  16. Thank you all for the kind words. I'm dropping my account to Basic but not deleting it. After all...you never know, do you? I THINK this is a final farewell, but I am definitely leaving a way to come back, if I change my mind!
  17. I debated with myself before making this post, and finally decided that it would be better to do so, rather than to just leave my friends wondering "Whatever happened to Lindal?" After 17 years, I'm leaving SL. A bit over two years ago, I took a year long sabbatical, then for the last year I've been active again. Now I am pretty sure that I'm actually ready to turn out the light, close the door, and walk away for good. I'm not mad at anyone, I'm not bored (or not completely), I'm not flouncing. Partly, I'm leaving because I realized I can no longer change with the times. The introduction of the new Senra avatars didn't excite me, it appalled me. Not because they are bad, but because now, if I wanted to keep helping newcomers, I'd have to learn a whole new thing...and I couldn't bring myself to even try. And it's not just the new avatars. Many other things, little and big, have changed, and I've noticed that more and more, the advice I give people is outdated. I'm not Keeping Up. Partly, yes, it's boredom. I got tired of constantly fighting my inventory, tired of taking an hour to put together a new outfit, tired of saying the same things over and over and over. Partly, it's health. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, and after a few hours, I can't see the computer screen clearly, no matter what glasses I use. And last month, I was diagnosed with a couple of blood clots in my leg, or deep vein thrombosis. One of the things that can cause this is sitting in one place too long, and lord knows, SL has contributed to that. The health issues really brought home that for almost the last two decades I've been living a large part of my life in front of a monitor. I don't have all that many years left, and if I don't want to shorten that time, I need to pay more attention to my health, as well as free up time to get all those things done that I've been putting off until "someday soon". SL has been a big part of my life for a long time, and it's been, on the whole, a very good part. I've done a lot of things, made a lot of friends, and had a lot of laughs. But now it's time to turn to other things. Thank you to Linden Lab for making this weird and wonderful place. And thanks to all you Forum people for making me laugh, teaching me, making me think, and being my friends. Have a wonderful life, all of you...both real and virtual. Love, Lindal Kidd
  18. If you bought an item and received an empty box, it could be a deliberate scam. You can Abuse Report the seller for Fraud.
  19. I think that belongs in @Madelaine McMasters's house.
  20. Where's the fun in that? Look at your influx not as an annoyance, but as a gift. You can use your gift in either (or both) of two ways. Greet a trespasser politely. You may find that you have found a new friend. If the trespassers don't respond, or respond like jerks, enjoy some target practice.
  21. Yes, that. You've mentioned your gear enough times that I picture your den like this:
