  1. My island is down.. I was able to log in at some random place, and I managed to get to a sandbox I had a LM to in my inventory so I could check out the mesh item I've been working on, but I am unable to search.  It tells me it has no results for anything I search for lol.

  2. I use virwox, and every time I've pulled money to my paypal, the fee has always been more than a dollar.  The last time I did a transfer, I sent $167.00 to paypal, and ended up only getting $162.66 into paypal, so you're definetly paying for getting the money instantly through virwox.  I refuse to wait on my money, so I'm happy to pay the higher fee personally.

  3. When I do my downloads, I password the .rar file.  However, there are a number of websites that allow you to password the download itself.  A quick google search will probably answer your question of what websites do this.

  4. Thank you for the feedback.

You know, it's funny... as I was doing the expanding in this video in the outliner, I was thinking, surely there's a better way to expand all this out, but as I was recording, didn't think it was a good idea to sit and shuffle around with the program in fear it would confuse people watching.  Thanks for letting me know though.. I will def. add that info on the page below the video.

Also, it's good to know you don't have to select each joint as I did.  Someone had once told me that you had to select each one, so I've always had the habit of doing it.  I'll also add this info to the page.

Your helpful input will def. help cut back on the time it takes to rig the meshes.  :)

  5. After months of trying to rig a clothing item in Maya, I finally figured out how to get it to work.  Personally, one of my biggest issues was that the calculate skin weights button was greyed out anytime I tried to upload, and it turns out a few simple changes fixed it, and I am now uploading rigged meshes with ease.  To try and help others from having any of the same issues I was having, I created a video today detailing how I did it so people that prefer video tutorials can follow along easier.

I bable a lot, and um/uh must be my favorite words to use, but if you can get past all that, I've covered EVERY step I use to get a rigged mesh into Second Life.  Hope it helps even just one person!

  6. Ok, I FINALLY got it working :)

Now, I'm back using the skeleton Chosen Few links to.  Just in case anyone else has issues, I'll post exactly how I did it.

    1. Once mesh is created, save and close mesh file.  Open (do not import) your skeleton.
    2. Import mesh into your scene.
    3. Select your mesh and delete the history from it.
    4. If outliner is not already open, open it.  Select each joint (while holding shift) in the outliner starting with the low heirarchy and work your way up to the pelvis.
    5. After you select each joint, while holding down shift, select the mesh.
    6. Go to Skin->Bind Skin->Smooth Bind Options.
    7. Make sure under Bind To that you have Select Joints chosen and not Joint Heirarchy.
    8. Also make sure Remove Unused Influences is NOT checked.
    9. Now press Bind Skin button on the options window.
    10. Paint your weighting by going to Skin->Edit Smooth Skin->Paint Skin Weights Tool
    11. Select mesh, export selected as a collada file, and upload into Second Life!

Thanks to everyone who has ever helped me with this issue, sometimes all it takes is a fresh night of sleep and retracing each set of instructions you were EVER given lol.  :)

  7. Ok, that may well be the issue because I belive I probably imported the skeleton onto the mesh clothing in Maya.

I'll have to go back and find where I initially downloaded the skeleton because aparently I accidentally saved over the original file.  For the life of me, I cannot get the skeleton that Chosen Few always links to to work for me, so I had found a different skeleton here.

WHen I use the one Chosen links to, it exports great, but include skin weights is ALWAYS greyed out.  I make sure all of the obvious things are done, as in, remove unused influences is unchecked inside Maya, I select each joint by hand starting from the toes and working my way up to the skull, and I've made sure each joint is named correctly.  I wish I could figure out why that skeleton does not work for me, since I'm sure it does work since so many use it.  I must be doing something wrong in the rigging process, but I've followed every step cautiously numerous times, and just keep having the issue that include skin weights is not available.  Am I selecting the joints in the wrong order?

  8. I decided to give mesh clothing another shot recently, and I'm encountering an error when I go to export my rigged mesh.  I downloaded a skeleton here on the forums, and initially when I used it, the mesh exported fine, but the include skin weight option was greyed out in SL, and upon inspection of the skeleton, it was named with a prefix, so I had to change each joint name.  Once I did that, I saved the skeleton so I wouldn't have to do it again.  However, now when I use the skeleton, I get the following error upon export from Maya--

While reading or writing a file the following notifications have been raised.

Warning: Null not supported by COLLADA. Node BasicSkeleton_avatar1 will lose its geometric information. The node transforms will be saved.

I went ahead and tried to upload the mesh anyway hoping it would upload in SL.  The mesh shows up just fine, I'm able to select include skin weight, but the upload fails.

Thinking maybe I needed to freeze and reset transformations on the skeleton, I did that and also deleted the history.  I still encounter the same error.

I also tried exporting as .fbx and running it through the FBX converter to convert it to a .dae, and again the upload fails into Second Life.

Wanted to make sure it wasn't the mesh clothing itself messing up, so I created a quick new test mesh, and still getting the same error :(

Now I'm at a loss, and I hope someone can help me figure out when I'm getting this error when I export.

    Thank you.

  9. That is your opinion of fun.. Personally I find creating and selling to be fun and fulfilling. According to you though, I guess I'm obsessed with money since I am not "playing" for free. To be honest though, I can't remember the last time I paid my islands tier out of pocket. It wa years ago. So in a sense, I do "play" for free, as my stores pay for my tier, anything I buy, and even some RL things. I do, however, pay with time and effort, but as I stated before, it's fun for me. I LOVE my second life, regardless of bitter people screaming and complaining about anything and everything that disagrees with their opinions.

  10. Believe it or not, there are those of us in world still earning a good amount of money.. if the ability to do that stopped, I would leave immediately. The fun of SL for me is creating and owning my island and stores. I am by far not the only one that would leave if the ability to earn money and own land suddenly vanished.

I promise you, SL would feel the impact of all the creators leaving if we were no longer able to own land and earn money. I def. think that would be the begining of the end for Second Life. I also know that that is not going to happen though, so I am not worried.

I have just been threatened with an AR by a disgusting shrieking freak for the 'crime' of attempting to sell an item!

This maniac (some revolting sissy who should be monitored by the CIA, no doubt) accused me of being a contents thief. I tried to explain that a) the item is COPY/TRANSFER/MOD b) I was not claiming to have 'created' it c) I was selling it as a second hand item. With this. the rotten brat threatened to fake AR me for something else, and I reluctantly withdrew the item for sale - impacting on my business.

How is anyone meant to make their own Lindens if screaming interfering idiots disrupt sales like this? Contents creators- make your items non-transfer if you don't wish them to be sold on!! Of course, again, this level of malice and jealousy, this hatred of entrepreneurs, only benefits the SL landowners - those who think all noobs should only be able to make money by creating female alts and offering sexual services!

How is anyone meant to make their own L$?  Create your own things, like MOST Second Life's content creators.  I personally find it in very bad taste to resell full permission items as is, regardless of the license attached.  You are not a content creator if you take the hard work of others and resell it as is with no bit of creative changes.

I do sell items full permission, and they all have a license attached to them.  I can tell you right now, if I found you reselling my items as is or with full permission, I'd be filing against you immediately.  Just because they are full permission does not mean it is your to do with as you wish.  There are limitations in most cases, and you'd be wise to double check before placing items for sell.

  12. Thank you so much for your replies.  This will help tremendously when choosing.  I wasn't even sure if these computers would be able to run SL or not, and the extra info on the differences in the computers is nice for me since I don't know much about computers.  The price difference was around 500 dollars I believe, so it really helps a lot to know the comparisons.  :)

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I tend to run a lot of things open while in SL, generally I have Photoshop CS5 and Maya running at the same time, which works fine on my desktop computer.  But other than running Photoshop, Second Life, Maya, and Zbrush, I don't use my computer for anything else other than surfing the internet.  My computers are primarily for work only (as I make a decent bit of money on customs in SL).  I have always owned only one computer, always aimed for SL and working in Zbrush/Maya/Photoshop, and I always have it customized to do so.  This is one time where I'm kind of lost since I've been made aware you can't customize a laptop like youw ould a desktop!

    Anyway, thank you again.

  13. Oops, I accidentally cut the specs off.  The graphic specs are--

  15. Hey everyone.  I'm looking to buy a laptop as an addition to the desktop computer I already own.  I travel a lot, so I'd like to have something else I can work off of when I'm not able to get to my desktop computer.  My husband is in the US Army, so I am planning to purchase my laptop from the aafes website since I have a line of credit with them (1900 limit).  I need help figuring out what will run Second Life and how well.  I don't know anything about this, and that's why I'm coming to you guys.  Since I'm looking at the aafes website, you guys cannot view the website unless you are a military member or spouse as well, and since I can't copy paste each laptop they offer, I'm just going to list a few, and see what you guys think.

Here are ones I've looked at seriously, but unsure about how they will run SL or if they even will and which would be best-

  16. SO many people I talk to have issues texturing using projection master in Zbrush.  Personally, I've never had an issue, BUT viewing other tutorials, I see that they have either left a step out or just done it wrong.  I never have the jagged black line issue so many have.  So, I had created a text and picture based tutorial a while back, but something odd happened to the website, and I was forced to redo it.  I now have a video tutorial up on my website that will walk you through the steps to get a clean texture out of projection master.

I hope this will help those of you starting out in Zbrush.  Zbrush is an amazing program, and it def. has a strong point in texturing, so I feel this is important to know!  Enjoy.

  17. I never could figure out what the issue is with exporting my skirt rigged, so I am now using Blender in my pipeline.  I'd much rather be using Maya straight through, but I have tried everything I could think of, including suggestions in this thread.  >.<

  18. Any tutorial you can find about poly-modeling should be good info.  Search on youtube for the program you will be using followed by the word tutorials, and you will probably pull up a good bit of info that will at least get you started.

You'll also need a skeleton to rig your skirt to, so search these forums for one.  You fail to say what program you plan to use, so it's hard to point you to anything specific without knowing that.
