No, I think you are quite wrong. People can't "do anything with it". The actual rule is quite simple English and quoted in the post above. If you were not there you are not entitled to see it unless the people all consent. Your friend who was there is not allowed to notecard it and pass it on to you, even if it were in open chat.
I'd guess the Lab are not going to actively go out and ban people who do share local chat, but that doesn't make it a free for all.
Pedant: Does local chat fit the definition of "a conversation" as per the cited rule?
Oh, my sweet summer child, anything you do digitally is a free for all. Russian botnets see everything on your phone, from your contact lists, to your sexynudes, to every text you ever send, including the ones you started to type then deleted and never actually sent. And I don't think they have any hesitation with sharing that information with the entire internet. #FIC

I always thought of you as a sassy, wise assed, take no crap, stand up for yourself, bad ass babe... Of course, i never met you inworld... Only here on the old forums.. When you used a different name. Glad to see you back BTW. Klytyna reminds me a hell ton of the old you in the old forums.. I keep waiting for her to say, crotch fruit...
Ah yes, I put a lot of work into cultivating a resonant brand, for you! the people!

/me chuckles. Actually, Amythyst, LittleMe Jewell answered your question perfectly. It's just complicated, you kinda had to be there. There are a bunch of us, that have been chatting together on the SL Forums for many years. MANY years. This wasn't always the forum, there were a couple other ones prior to this. One of our friends, made a post, back during the first SL forum, and then changed her mind about the post, and changed the subject to: Just Ignore and Let this one die. She thought the post would just fade away after that. Well of course we couldn't possibly let it die after she said that. So, we kept it going. Every time a new Forum reincarnation comes along, one of us will restart that thread. It's a bunch of friends, who have been in SL together, for a long, long time. We talk about whatever we want to talk about here. Maybe that's a little more detail, LittleMe Jewell gave you links to our old forums, but maybe with this additional detail, you'll understand who's here, and why. Just us being us. When you go inworld, check out the group: The Forum Cartel. That's us.

It's pretty much about anything, everything, and nothing. It is our goof off, rambling, ranting, whatever-the-heck-we-want-it-to-be thread. The original of this thread was due to a mistake, back in early 2008 - two forums ago. That thread is here:
http://forums-archive.secondlife.com/327/85/252954/1.html
When forum software changed, the thread got started up again - here:
https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/32554-just-ignore-and-let-this-one-die/
That one sort of carried over here, but then this new continuation got started also. Thus the older one was closed off and this one is carrying on.

Is audio actually a legal grey area? Streamers record without permission all the time.
ehhhhhhhhhhhh California law is weird and this is privately owned video game where the TOS/EULA probably has waviers and stuff and ehhhhhhhh
My uneducated interpretation is that as a company based in CA, as well as being a resident of CA, it's more than likely that audio recordings of a conversation I participate in would be illegal without "consent"
However, as far as -telephone calls- go, pressing "1" is consent, so is continuing to speak after hearing an "audible beep" from the recording party. And if the call originates from inside CA to someone outside CA, the laws only apply to the CA resident yet, the outsider's state laws have to be followed as well. And the crafty mofos in my life just skirt around all this stuff with three-way calling anyway.
This happens to me all too often ^^
I am so not the person to be giving advice on the subject.

In-world Chat is public. Anyone can do anything with it. IM might have rules but probably not. Audio recordings are probably a little more of a legal grey area. And then of course, there's a difference between illegal/against TOS and *actually enforced/enforceable*

what's this thread all about? I don't understand.

That totally sucks. I'm not saying this in a rude way, but if that is how your SL has always been then you've been hanging out with the wrong folks, at the wrong places.
this feels like a matter of perspective

Do you mind if I keep thinking of you as a woman? It's easier that way. I mean, if you don't want to be treated like a woman don't wear a woman avatar
YOU WOULD LITERALLY BE THE FIRST
(I've never been treated like a woman in SL. Everyone always assumed I was the alter-ego of a 47 year old gay man.)

I'm not confused or angry, but neither do I get the joke. Maybe denying "dead-naming" is a real thing is the joke?
I had to talk my way out of a community college suspension after I complained a professor dead-named me and the professor complained that I complained. RL people are lurking on the forums today. The school took the position of "dead naming is not a real thing" -- as in the powers that be hadn't heard of it, so they assumed I made it up for trolling purposes.

(Dead-naming, for those unfamiliar with the term, refers to the use of a transgender person's birth name, rather than their chosen post-transition name. An example would be the people who still call Caitlyn Jenner 'Bruce', thereby refusing to accept her post-transition gender. It's mostly used as a deliberate insult.)
That's not a real thing! (one person will get this joke, 200 will be confused and angry)

Hey! If you know me, you know me. I am coming out as transgender. And gay. But mostly transgender.

Remember those freebies everywhere?
I mean they're still around but they used to be EVERYWHERE. Pretty dated nowadays but there was a time when dat Walter Smitty.
Who was Ronja? What's the story behind the store? What kind of buisness in a box silliness lead to full perms Ronja items all over the grid?
