  1. @Sylvia, no "tuts" at all! Livin' La Vida Loca makes me want to dance, too! @Dillon, Hall & Oates? That's the music I listened to when I was my daughter's age. Now I really do feel old! @Dres, I'd love to hear some of your music sometime. Lillie and Gypsy both I'm sure would be willing to give you tips on how to get set up for that. @Katt, I had never heard "Bubble Toes" before, but that's the second time in less than two days that I've seen a reference to that song, in completely different places. I wonder if that's a sign of something? Also, I'd have included "Here Comes the Sun" in my picks, but you beat me to it! @Mayalily, I love "Shiny Happy People" (and all things R.E.M.) @Valerie, I have such memories associated with "In Your Eyes." In college we made up our own lyrics to it to roast a friend's poor navigational skills on a long road trip. I can't listen to that song without thinking of "our" version. @Claireschen, Love "Walking on Sunshine." Can't believe I didn't think of that one last night! @everyone else, I'll listen to the rest of these happy songs when I'm home later. Can't wait! And finally, here's another contribution to the list. This one is dedicated to Dee, who always makes us dance in SL.
  2. Sylvia, Sylvia, Sylvia. Tsk, tsk, tsk. How many times do I have to tell you? THIS is the version of Hallelujah that you really meant to post, right? We'll just blame it on the coconut drinks again, shall we? (Although, the Jeff Buckley version is beautiful in its own right, too.)
  3. Some that always put a smile on my face -- there are many more. I'll have to think harder and add some more tomorrow. And I know it's not Christmas, but my very favorite Christmas CD is Nick at Nite's A Classic Cartoon Christmas. Here are a couple of my favorites from it:
  4. I'll be back to make my own contribution to this thread later, but in the meantime, here is one from Maddy that I am posting on her behalf.
  5. Forum lurker extraordinaire Madelaine McMasters has submitted the following poignant links for this thread. Two versions of the same song. I post them here on her behalf. The second video is apparently prohibited from embedding, so you'll have to folllow this link straight to YouTube to view it. Especially recommended for anyone who wants to understand the fried egg Maddy is currently wearing on her forehead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn0YqNvBvy4
  6. Dresden Ceriano wrote: Oh you bitch.... I absolutely love Cinema Paradiso. Being American and therefore lazy as hell, there's not many non-English speaking movies that I've been exposed to... this is one of my absolute favorites... thank you. ...Dres Cinema Paradiso is all my all-time favorite foreign movie. And as odd as it sounds because it's such an unlikely pairing, Cinema Paradiso and Toy Story 3 are the two movies that stand out as making me sob for extended periods of time, every time I watch them. I mean tears running down my neck and drenching my collar sobbing.
  7. Yet another cry song. I can't decide between two versions which move me equally, so I'm sharing them both. This one is the soundtrack original (theme from the movie Cinema Paradiso, composed by Ennio Morricone). And this is a version with Chris Botti and Yo-Yo Ma. As an aside, I never, ever knew I was a fan of the trumpet until I saw Chris Botti perform as the opening act at a concert Zeke and went to several years ago. The beautiful, rich sounds he gets out of that instrument, I've never heard anything like it. I never know whether to melt or cry when I listen to his music.
  8. I love the addition of the opera and classical pieces in this thread. They are melancholy, emotional, and as Storm said, turbulent. Absolutely the kind of music to move one to tears.
  9. Dillon Levenque wrote: And you wondered why I waited until I had a little privacy at work to check this thread? I knew it would be this way. I haven't listened to a single one; just reading the titles and remembering the ones I know was bad enough. "Leader of the Band" damn near did me in all by itself. I have to turn that down if there's someone in the car with me when it comes on. This is a great thread, Quinn (and everyone else who has shared). I may even think of something myself, once I get past listening to everyone else's. Thanks. "Leader of the Band" ranks up there as one of my all time favorite songs. I love music where the lyrics tell a powerful story. I wonder, just how damaging would it be to my mental psyche if I were to create a playlist titled "Cry" in my iTunes, with all of these songs that everyone is sharing in it? I don't care, I'm probably going to do it anyway. Sometimes a good cry can be cathartic.
  10. Dres, the first time I ever heard "This Woman's Work" was as the music for this heart-wrenchingly beautiful cancer tribute dance routine on "So You Think You Can Dance." Yep, it's a tearjerker, alright.
  11. Dres, I even captured you on film at Hippiestock. http://www.flickr.com/photos/quinnmorani/5358520138/in/set-72157625706148269/
  12. Dresden Ceriano wrote: Lia Abbot wrote: Actually, Dres, your comment reminds me of a story I once heard. I can't swear it's true, but it was Peter Cook, one of the funniest men who ever lived, so I'm prepared to believe it. Apparently a minion rang him up one day and told him that Andrew and Fergie would like him to come to dinner. His response? 'Let me check my calendar... No sorry, I seem to be watching television that night.' Damn... why didn't I think of that? @Maryanne: That was pretty much my experience there as well... except I didn't know a soul and went there stag... oh and didn't contribute anything afterwards except my pic, which I did take on your pose stand. The thing is, I felt I knew everyone there because of getting to know them in the forums, so really it felt like home to me. That alone made it an incredible experience. Strangely, I've made very few inworld friends through the forums, but then again I haven't really put forth the effort to do so... that's something I'm trying to change now. I have great regard for so many people here. I guess I was of a mind set that my inworld experience should be different that my in-forum experience... now I'm thinking I was completely wrong about that from the start. It's hard for me to reach out and try to make friends inworld, but that's what I've been trying to do. I've been trying to go to more and more events with forum members. Of course, it's been hampered in the last week by my problems with my back, which keeps me off of SL and only able to post here occasionally... simply because sitting at my computer exacerbates the problem. But it's getting better day by day, so soon I will have no excuse... lol. Luckily I've been invited to join and joined a few groups on my own that are forum member related... not to mention twitter and the new SLum, so I'm more informed about what's going on. I do hope to get to know people from here inworld more and more in the future. Love all around ...Dres (If someone can, please, let me know whether or not I'm allowed to join the LWL group, I'd be very appreciative. I wasn't about to just do it, even though I really want to.) Dres, I remember you at Hippiestock. It's where I first "noticed" you, I think. I don't recall having seen you post much on the forums prior to that, but I noticed how you jumped right into the conversation at Hippiestock, and funny, too! I see from the rest of this thread that your invite to LWL has already been attended to, otherwise I'd certainly have hooked up when I go inworld later. It was an honor that you came by my "island warming" party last week. I certainly hope we see you around inworld a lot more often!
  13. Maryanne Solo wrote: Noting some of the consternation earlier on in this thread my Hippiestock went like this... I knew forum people by name mostly, so I went out of curiosity and to see a large gathering in SL. I arrived and was overwhelmed by the pace of the chat, (even early in the piece), so I gave up trying to have any meaningful conversations apart from with a gf who also attended. We nattered away in private chat until she had to leave. All I managed to do was say some hello's to people I had never met inworld and fire off the odd, hopefully funny quip every now and then. I amused myself by wandering around looking at peoples avis and the trouble they had taken to prepare for it. I met Keli K as the site was being prepared/built by Ms Finucane, (whom I had never met inworld either) and Maddy McM who was a friend. I did know maybe 8? people from the forum cartel who attended the event itself, but apart from that I knew no one other than having seen their posts on the old GD. I contributed nothing until after the event where in the spirit of the whole SL community I offered my pose stand, instructions and whitewall for Maddies wonderful Big Picture which was inclusive of people who didn't even attend. Therefore as far as the majority were concerned I was the unknown Avi who snuk up onstage while Gypsy performed, to dance :-D I had never heard of Gypsy or Lillie and I had never even met Hippie. Well I had but didn't realise it until a month? or so ago. To this day I am amazed at the friendships that persist from that one event. Every single person I met I look upon with respect and am so pleased to have met them. Some tweet, some flicker, some I hang out with. In summary get your pixel butt along to it and have a darn good time. If you don't like someone it's ok, just mute them!? If you say Hi to someone be prepared to wait about 6 minutes for their acknowledgement of your hello :^/ When I first started SL big crowds were the norm and the closest you will get to that these days are 80's clubs and the like. If you are new or shy, say hi to Hippie, me or others with past connections to Hippiestock. To think that anyone felt left out is a major dissapointment to me and I imagine, the majority of patrons. Join the group inworld and as it draws closer the chat will go banannas :-) See you there!!!! Bravo! There is nothing I can add to that. Just... B-R-A-V-O.

  15. For all the American Idol naysayers, this may the most moving rendition I've ever heard of this song. Fantasia was absolutely not my favorite singer and definitely not my choice to win that season, but THIS is hands down my single favorite performance from that season and maybe ever on American Idol because of the beautiful raw emotion she brought to it. And this one from my favorite musical, Les Miserables. There is no song in that entire production that doesn't grip me in emotion, but this is the one most likely to send tears streaming down my face.
  16. Wow, so many wonderful, heart-wrenching songs here. I'm at work and can't turn the volume up loud enough to really listen to the songs I'm not familiar with, so I'll come back to those tonight to enjoy the full listening experience. But as for the others: @Lynda, your comments made me laugh out loud. That's contradictory to theme of the thread, nevertheless I loved your take on it. @Dee, okay, disclaimer: Don't read this thread at work unless you enjoy having to explain red eyes, running mascara, and wet cheeks to your nosy co-workers. @Ceka and Lillie, I too love Sarah McLachlan. @Kolby, I love My Immortal and especially Tears in Heaven. Can't believe I left those off my list. @Tem, a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria, another favorite that just make something inside me swell. @Lillie, Nessum Dorma is a favorite, and I was blown away the first time I heard Paul Potts sing it. I've got a couple of others that I'm going to share as soon as I can pull up the YouTube links. Stay tuned.
  17. I'm on my iPad trapped in the doctor's office for a while, so I can't see most of these embedded Youtube videos at the moment. (<grumble>Stupid Apple, not supporting Flash.</grumble>) So I have no idea if this one duplicates something one of you already posted. But another song guaranteed to require hankies is Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle. I'll come back later when I'm at a real computer and edit to add a YouTube link. Edited to add YouTube link, finally:
  18. I saw a few music threads today, not all of which I've posted to yet (but I will). And in digging through my music library, I stumbled across a couple of songs that never fail to bring tears to my eyes. Don't laugh that this first one is Barry Manilow. It's a haunting tune set to a poem by Johnny Mercer, and it rips me apart every time I hear it, as I imagine either Zeke or myself alone in our twilight years, without the other. This beautiful song by singer/songwriter John Gorka was shared with me by a friend several years ago as inspiration for a project we were working on together at the time. The project fell through, but the song still resonates with me deeply. What songs make YOU cry?
  19. And post #2 with my other top 5. Some of these are more pop than rock, but I don't care.
  20. This is an impossible task, choosing just 5 songs to list here. Here are my first 5. I think I'm going to have to do a second post with another 5.
  21. That setting is a little counterintuitive. I think this is the change you need to make: Go to My Settings > Preferences > Display Under "Format for displaying posts," select "Show first post in a topic and number of replies" The "show all posts" setting actually shows a list of all replies, instead of showing the actual posts. Confusing for sure, but if you change that setting you should see all posts for the thread, broken across a few pages depending on how many posts you have set to show per thread. I think the default is 10 posts per page.
  22. By far the most I have ever laughed in SL was at a party at Lillie Woodell's place a few months ago. I can't really describe how hilarious it was. You just have to look at the pictures and read some of the chat transcript that's included with a few of the pictures. All I can say is cows, eggheads, and trampolines. http://www.flickr.com/photos/quinnmorani/sets/72157626434327653/
