  1. You probably did not do a clean install. There is more to it than just running the viewer's automatic un-installer. You have to manually delete all the settings files and folders and cache. Here is the Second Life Knowledge Base article about it: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231 And here is the Firestorm article about it (this refers to the Firestorm viewer, a Second Life compatible 3rd party viewer): http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_update_viewer
  2. Maybe increase the "dead zone" on the troublesome axis, in the Joystick setup page? I had to do that with a Logitech joystick. It became too sensitve to slight movements off the exact neutral point.
  3. In no particular order: This is a resident forum. The Lindens don't post here. Some residents can give advice, but if you need Linden help you need to send in a support ticket, or if you are a premium member you can use live chat to talk to the Linden support team. Second Life is complicated. It is a good idea to search the Knowledge Base and talk to experienced residents before you put money in. Know what you are getting. Premium membership gives you the right to buy mainland and gives you 512m2 of tier credit. It does not actually give you the land. Actually getting the land is a separate step, with a number of different options (apply for a free Linden house, or buy manland at auction, or buy it direct from the current owner). Finding the land is another step - you have to know the location and how to teleport to it using the map or a SLURL. And if you bought mainland, you will need to buy or build a house. You might like renting a house and land from a resident better that buying it from the lab. Look for themed role play estates. Jumping from a web page link to an in-world location does not always work, but if you know the location you can almost always teleport there by using the map, after you have logged in. Clothing has become more complicated since we now have both "classic" and "mesh" avatars. Clothing must be made for the type of avatar that you are using. You can't rez anything on the ground, unless you are on land that permits you to do so. Generally, that means either a sandbox, or land that you own or rent. You may have to wear a group name tag, if you are renting the land. You need to download and install a Second Life compatible viewer to your (PC) computer to be able to get in. Unfortuately, this does not work so well on tablets/iPads, although Bright Canopy is working on an alternative for tablets/iPads.
  4. Maybe try right clicking where the missing object should be. Invisible objects used to be a more frequent problem.
  5. There are two basic types of avatars in Second Life: 1. The original "Classic style" avatars. They modify a default "System body" with these parts: First are these required parts which can not be removed, but can be replaced with different ones: Shape (includes gender), skin, eyes, eyebrow shaper-hair base. Then add on these optional parts, which can be removed entirely: System layer clothing (many layers, many types), tatoo makeup, shoes, wig, mesh or flexi attachments (non-system layer clothing made for standard avatars). 2. Mesh avatars. These are a kind of flexable whole body shell that is worn over a default system avatar. The default system avatar is usually made invisible by wearing a whole boday alpha (so it won't show through the mesh shell). Mesh avatars require clothing specifically made for that particular mesh avatar. You can find Linden provided starter avatars (of both kinds) in your viewer. Usually in an item called something like "Choose an avatar" under one of the menus in the viewer. You can also find complete starter avatars in your inventory, in the Library folder. You can wear one by dragging the folder onto your avatar. Starter avatars are fairly basic, you can buy more advanced ones on the marketplace, but become familiar with how it works before spending a lot of money.
  6. Yes, the $1 test charge should be refunded. Also, there were technical problems with billing ("Unscheduled Maintenance") earlier today. See http://status.secondlifegrid.net/
  7. Are you trying to copy something into your Outfits folder? That does not work. It always makes a link. Outfits are supposed to be links. You can copy any object that is copy allowed into a regular folder, edit it, then make a link in an Outfits folder.
  8. It is not possible to "open the grass" but it may be possible to terraform land you own or rent down to make a deep valley, then you can build a house or landscape over that with prims or mesh. Terraform can push the grass up or down. How much varies: Private island estate: The estate owner controls how far renters are allowed to move the land up or down. I think 100 m is the maximum ever allowed. Mainland: Setting depends on the location. The limit is + - 4 m over almost all the mainland except a few very old regions where it is + - 40 m for every resident with terraform rights. Try Ritch or Zoe both have vacant land and + - 40 m terraform limits. Note: If you buy the land outright, you will be the owner and will have all mainland rights, including terraform rights. To buy mainland, you must have a Premium account, and if the land is over 512m2 in size you must pay monthly Tier. If you rent mainland from another resident, you will only have rights that the owner allows you to have (and you will have to pay rent to the actual owner, but won't need a Premium account). Special note: Linden mainland that is marked "Abandoned - not for sale" may be available. If you find abandoned land you want, submit a help ticket to Linden Lab asking them to sell the land to you (or at least put it up for auction). You can ask them to cut a part of the land off, if it is too big for you to buy all of it. There is no guarantee that they will agree to this, but they may.
  9. And also, the money you deposit in PayPal must be converted to US dollars if you want to use it to pay Linden Lab (PayPal can do this conversion). See: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Billing/ta-p/700037#Section_.3.5 https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/List-of-accepted-payment-methods-by-country/ta-p/2953878
  10. While logged into Second Life, check your viewer preferences (here is where it is in Firestorm): Preferences (Control P) -> Sound and Media -> Voice -> Audio Device Settings button Use the 'Input' drop down to select the right microphone and the 'Output' drop down to select the right headset.
  11. Scripted objects will usually activate even over no-script land, if you fly up high enough. The script activation height is about 50m above the land. If the HUD is properly designed, it should keep running once it has been activated, even if you fly back down.
  12. Is this a private estate (island)? Contact the estate owner. Is this mainland? If so, can you 'cam' in from a neighboring parcel, and right click on the land to get the About Land menu? Has the group been taken over by outsiders who then ejected you from the group? Contact the group owner. If the group owner is gone also, you need to contact Linden Lab.
  13. There are basically two kinds of land in Second Life: 1. You pay tier directly to Linden Lab. You have complete control of the land. You "own" the land. In most cases, you must have a premium account, and you will usually be buying a parcel on the manland. Your premium account includes 512 m2 of tier which covers 512m2 of land. You only pay more tier if you own more than 512m2. There are few rules on the mainland, in most cases only the TOS general rules, TOS mainland rules, and the region maturity rating apply. You can buy mainland parcels from the Linden auction site, or directly inworld if the land has been set for direct sale. https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 http://usd.auctions.secondlife.com/lin/auction/auction/list/ 2. Somebody else (a land lord or land baron) pays Linden Lab. You pay the land lord, usually every week or month. The advantage of this are: You don't need a premium account. The land lord will usually enforce rules and a theme on their lands, so your neighbors must conform to the rules. You can talk to your land lord or their land managers if you need help. The disadvantage is the land lord is in control, and they decide what you can do. Land lords also may abandon their land at any time. If they stop paying Linden Lab, the whole region may just dissapear.
  14. Firestorm is not ready for Viewer Managed Marketplace, although the Firestorm developers are working on it. Right now you can use Linden Lab's beta viewer. See: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Viewer-managed-Marketplace/ta-p/2854226
  15. This is probably https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-9695 a bug in the server code. Multiple attempts are needed to join a group (if there is a joining fee, the money will be taken each time you try to join). There is also a bug in activating/switching group tags. It may take multiple attempts to activate a group you are already in. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-9725
  16. And the Flash video player has to be the Non-Internet Explorer version. The Firefox version works. https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ P.S. I have not had much luck with the auto-update of Flash. I have always manually un-installed the old version (through the Control Panel - Programs and Features) and then download and install the new version from the Adobe web site.
  17. It is probably in a box. You need to rez the box, and then open it to get the folder into your inventory. This means you have to find a sandbox, or other land you have the right to rez objects on. Also remember to clean up after you are done - delete or take the empty box. See here: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Opening-boxes/ta-p/700185
  18. Shaking like that is a sign your video card is being asked to do more work than it is capable of doing. The most effective way to reduce video workload is to reduce Draw Distance in the viewer preferences. Second is to reduce the viewer video quality setting. Third is to reduce the maximum number of non-imposter avatars visible in preferences. You can also try reducing particle effects and other video effects. The number of objects and textures in view in world, and the number of avatars in view also matters (more means more video work).
  19. You will probably get more help if you post in the Answers tab, rather than here. I have not used Skrill, but if it is like PayPal, you probably need to keep a balance of US Dollars in Skrill for it to work. See the Billing page: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Billing/ta-p/700037
  20. If you mean the typing animation that plays whenever you are typing, that animation is controlled by the preference options in the viewer. Most viewers have an option to not play the typing animation while typing.
  21. If she was banned by the land owner or estate owner, she is only banned from that land and can go to any other land in Second Life. She could also ask the land owner to remove the ban. If she was banned by Linden Lab, she can't log in at all, and it is a violation of TOS to try to evade a Linden ban. She could however file an appeal asking Linden Lab to remove the ban.
  22. The Lindens don't post here, we are just residents like you. To contact the Lindens, either create a support ticket, or contact billing support on the phone. See the first link below. But first, read through the "Billing" knowledge base article below. Many problems can happen with credit card or PayPal processing. https://support.secondlife.com/billing-support/ https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Billing/ta-p/700037 https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-and-selling-Linden-dollars/ta-p/700107
  23. An experienced avatar said that you must log in every week to get the 50 L on old basic accounts. Newer accounts don't get the 50 L.
  24. If you just added a new payment method (credit card or PayPal), there is a $1 charge, but that will be refunded/revoked in a few days. You are not actually being charged that money, Linden Lab is just checking to see if your payment method (credit card) is good. Your "Payment method" must be set to "apply" to each of several possible costs: Buy Lindens through the viewer Buy Lindens through the Lindex web site Pay reoccuring fees such as for premium membership, mainland parcels, etc. (if any). To actually buy the Lindens, you have to do it either through the viewer, or through the Lindex web site, or else through a Linden approved 3rd party Linden reseller. See: https://secondlife.com/my/?lang=en-US <-- This link will go to your Dashboard, your billing info is under "Account" https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Billing/ta-p/700037 https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-and-selling-Linden-dollars/ta-p/700107 http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Linden_Dollar_%28L$%29_Authorized_Reseller_Program Warning! Do not buy Lindens from any 3rd party unless they are on the official Linden Authorized Reseller list!
