  1. Hi Zuzie! Welcome to Second Life. It sounds as if you somehow bypassed the help area at the entry point to Second Life, so you never got basic information. Here's a good place to start >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-Quickstart/ta-p/1087919 . Once you have read through that article and played in world enough to get familiar with what you learn from it, start in on this next one >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-User-s-Guide/ta-p/1244857 I know it's not much fun to enter a strange world by reading a manual, but those are good materials. You can learn many of the things in them by visiting help areas in world too, like the Virtual Ability sim. (Once you learn where your map is, open it and type "Virtual Ability" in the search field. Then hit the Teleport button.). As you have questions of problems, ask people. Everyone was a newbie once, and most people are glad to help another newbie. You may come back here and ask too, or ask elsewhere in the forums. Finally...... those two articles I gave up are from the Knowledge Base, which is a good resource for a lot of SL information. Get in the habit of searching it for answers to perplexing questions too. Welcome aboard!
  2. I think maybe you're being distracted by a red herring. My guess is that it has nothing at all to do with the fact that it's a media player. You've run into SVC-7902. Take a look. Linden Lab has a fix for the bug in beta now, and will probably be able to roll it out to the main grid next week. Meanwhile, go to the center of your house and rez a cube. If it doesn't rez, move a little and try again. And again. And again, until you find the middle of your land. You ought to be able to rez there. So rez your media player at that spot and drag it to wherever you want it. Or wait till next week.
  3. A plot of land that is 120m x 120m is 14400 sq m. You will be in the tier for 1/4 of a sim, for which the land fees are $75 per month. If you rent on a private sim, the landowner may be willing to redistribute some of the 3290 prims that should be allotted to a 14400 sq m parcel, leaving you with a smaller prim allowance and a somewhat lower rent. However, that's a big redistribution. Give it a try, but I think it's unlikely that you'll find a sim owner who's willing to charge you less than 1/3 of the rent that he needs to get in order to pay his own monthly fees to Linden Lab.
  4. Aside from the obvious fact that wifi is generally a lousy way to connect to SL, you might check your Maximum Bandwidth setting in Preferences >> Internet & Cache . Your relatives' Internet service may have lower bandwidth than you are used to, so the Max Bandwith setting that works for you at home may be too high. You can check your download speed at http://www.speedtest.net/ . Maximum Bandwidth should ideally be about %75 of that number. My best guess, however, is still that it's the wifi. Wireless is fine for doing simple things like e-mal and web browsing. Most games on the Internet, too, don't need a strong or continuous connection to distant servers. Second Life is a bandwidth hog and it requires a reliable, continuous connection -- more than wifi is designed to handle.
  5. Check first in Preferences >> Graphics to be sure that Basic Shaders and Hardware Skinning are enabled. That's the most common reason for failure to see mesh. Because you're on a Mac and therefore using an ATI graphics card, you may also have trouble with some OpenGL operations. Try disabling shadows and see if that helps. As unintuitive as it sounds, this might also be a DNS issue, a result of an imperfect connection between your computer and SL's servers. See if if makes a difference to add the Google DNS servers to whatever default servers your ISP gives you .... On your Mac, open System Preferences and go to Network > Advanced > DNS Hit the plus button (+) and type in the numbers 8.8.8.8. Hit the plus button (+) and type in the numbers 8.8.4.4. If you live in Asia or Australia, you will need to use the following numbers instead of those just listed: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Even those in other parts of the world might find this pair to work better, so if you complete the process and find no change, repeat it with this set. Close the System Preferences and restart your viewer.
  6. As Dora says, it's a bit hard to tell without knowing how this snippet fits into the larger script. Still, you might try getting rid of the list ANGLE_VALUE, since it's simply echoing your menu anyway. Then simplify rotation newRot = llEuler2Rot( <0.0,(float)msg,0.0>*DEG_TO_RAD ); You may have to strip out the "+" sign on the positive values before recasting msg. I can't recall whether "+" is ignored when you recast something like "+15.0" .
  7. You do it VERY carefully. The Internet and SL in particular offer us anonymity, which can be wonderful. They also make it possible for all sorts of charlatans to say that they are raising funds for a worthy cause. Because we are guaranteed privacy by the TOS, there's no way to tell who's an honest fundraiser in SL and who's a con man. Linden Lab will not sponsor or vouch for anyone, including well-recognized drives like Race For Life. So, if you are raising funds for a private cause, be up front about it and hope that people trust you. If you are raising money for an organization, be sure that they know about it, so that they can give you their blessing or at least be forewarned about ways that your activity might reflect on their public image.
  8. Add the numbers together? AFAIK, there's no other way to get a combined traffic report for an estate.
  9. It sounds as if someone has unwisely advised you to use the RenderUnloadedAvatar debug setting as a solution for a bake fail. If that's what happened, go to your Advanced menu (CTRL + Alt + D) >> Debug Settings, find the RenderUnloadedAvatar setting and make sure that it says FALSE. That setting does exactly what it says, as you have just discovered ...... it lets you see your avatar as Ruth, even though it is not fully rendered. It doesn't fix the bake fail problem at all. Bake failure is the result of a communication problem between your computer and SL's servers. Information about your appearance has to be "baked" onto your avatar on your own computer, saved there, and then uploaded to SL before it's fully visible there. If the necessary information is messed up in transmission, you may end up with a borked file on your computer, or SL's servers may end up with a borked image. Either way, your av's appearance defaults to a fluffy cloud. What works to repair the damage for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilities here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today. You may find that the bake fail problem comes back repeatedly, even after you fix it with one of the suggestions on that wiki page. If so, you have a chronically weak Internet connection. There are many steps to take for repairing it. Perhaps the simplest ones -- ones that work best for most people -- are: (1) Don't Use WIRELESS. Wireless connections are inherently less stable than direct cable connections and are more vulnerable to interference. Then, (2) Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes to let it clear its RAM. Then plug it back in and let it get a fresh hold on an IP address.
  10. Thanks, Grif. Wow! $1,400? I just went back and re-read the earlier thread. I hadn't connected the two until you pointed it out. I have been here for over 5 years and have never spent $1,400 on anything. Ouch.
  11. If you are a Premium member of Second Life, go to https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ to submit a support ticket and select Billing >> Refund: Non-Linden$ . If you are not a Premium member, that option is not available to you, but you may be able to get help by calling the LL billing office. If you have a non-technical issue related to billing concerns, you can call the Linden Lab billing team at the following toll-free numbers: US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English You should be aware, however, that Linden Lab rarely issues a refund for anything. (Interesting, since they do offer that category of support ticket for Premium accounts..... ) It sounds as if you may have an exceptional case, but don't be surprised if the answer is no.
  12. You can change the time of day in your sky easily by looking in the World menu for Sun Position. You can set it to Sunrise, Midday, Sunset, or Midnight. Those changes move the sun around your sky to different positions and elevations, giving you the effect of four times of day. You see them only in your own viewer. Nobody else sees the changes. If you want to try something more adventurous, play with your Windlight settings, also in the World menu under Environment Settings ... If you click that, you'll see an option to Customize My Environment. You can select different water and sky settings from a huge menu of options. Some of them are funky, some creepy, and some truly gorgeous.
  13. What kind of computer do you have? How much memory? What sort of Internet connection are you using? Which SL viewer are you using? Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question here to add important information and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  14. It is barely possible that you have not been banned or suspended, but that your router is malfunctioning. Try rebooting it by unplugging it from the power for a few minutes. If that does not work, then your first guess was probably right ... you have been banned. The message that you reported here generally indicates you have been blocked from the Second Life servers by Linden Lab as the result of: Documented cases of fraud Use of Second Life by a minor Exceptionally flagrant abuse activity Note that someone else in your household may be responsible for this activity, not necessariliy with your account. You should have received an e-mail from Linden Lab explaining their decoision and telling you how to appeal. Please check your spam filter. If you believe that this is an error, submit a support ticket via the support portal. Don't try to e-mail someone... there's no way to do that. To help customer support determine what block has been placed and why, include in the ticket your Second Life account name and any Second Life accounts that log in from your location.
  15. It's hard to say without knowing much more about your computer or connection. if you are getting an error message then you truly are crashing, not disconnecting. The good news is, then, that you're probably not overheating -- one of the first things we worry about when SL dies on you after a few minutes. My best guess, though, is that you are expecting too much out of your computer. The Dell Inspiron is a pretty lightweight laptop, intended primarily for office and casual home use, not for the heavy demands of a gaming environment. You may have your Graphics Quality slider set higher than the computer can handle. Try setting it to Low and lowering your draw distance to 64m to start. If that helps, you can increase draw distance cautiously until you get in trouble again. Oh, and avoid using a wireless connection. That can easily cause problems if your system is marginal anyway. Whether that works or not, come back and let us know. Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question here and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  16. Your Internet does work, but there's a lot of difference between "working" and working well enough to sustain the heavy bandwidth use and continuous data streaming that SL expects. SL is not like online games. Your viewer and SL's servers trade information back and forth all the time, so even a small interruption or overload can make you drop your connection. If you're getting that DNS message, your viewer and SL's servers have temporarily lost the ability to talk to each other. Unless there's a problem with the servers (Always check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ first), it's probably something on your end. So.... (1) Try shutting off your computer, unplugging the router and modem for a couple of minutes, and then plugging them back in and restarting. That simple step may clear up everything 2) Supplement whatever DNS settings your ISP assigns you as a default. Don't remove those ones, but add Google's free public DNS servers above them in the list, so that your router uses Google's DNS servers as the default. Here's how >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
  17. It might help if you could tell us what kind of computer (and graphics card and operating system) you are using as well as what sort of Internet connection you're on. I assume that you're using the current V3 viewer, but if not ...... what are you using? How far through the logon process do you get before it fails? What have you tried so far? All these and other pieces of information would make it much easier for us to start guessing what the problem is. As Lindal says, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  18. There are a couple of possibilties..... 1. In order to play Flash format videos (eg YouTube videos), you must have the generic Adobe Flash plugin installed. If you use IE as your web browser and already have Flash, you will need to get the generic Flash plugin; see here. linux users need to have gstreamer installed, with the “bad” plugin set. 2. You may have your Maximum Bandwidth setting (in Preferences >> Network & Cache) too high. That setting tells your viewer how much of your available bandwidth to reserve for basic functions, not including voice and streaming media. If it's set too high, your viewer can use all of your available bandwidth for rendering textures, tracking positions of objects and avatars, communications, and other basics, and then have nothing left over for streaming media. For optimum performance in SL, set Maximum Bandiwdth no higher than 75% of your measured download speed (see http://www.speedtest.net/http://www.speedtest.net/ ).
  19. SL residents with Macs often have a problem with DNS settings. That might be the issue for you too. Your viewer and SL's servers have temporarily lost the ability to talk to each othere. Unless there's a problem with the servers (Always check http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ first), it's probably something on your end. So.... (1) Try shutting off your computer, unplugging the router and modem for a couple of minutes, and then plugging them back in and restarting. That simple step may clear up everything (2) Supplement whatever DNS settings your ISP assigns you as a default. Don't remove those ones, but add Google's free public DNS servers above them in the list, so that your router uses Google's DNS servers as the default. Here's how >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ (3) If things are STILL messed up, contact your ISP. Maybe they are working on their Internet connections. Mine go down for about 20 minutes once a month or so while they are vacuuming dust out of their servers, or whatever they do.
  20. I generally avoid using glow or use it very sparingly, so I haven't had any reason to mess around with the debug settings that adjust glow parameters. I notice, however, that the note on RenderGlowWidth says, "Glow sample size (higher = wider and softer but eventually more pixelated)". "More pixelated" sounds like your problem. Mine is set at 1.300, which I assume is the default. If yours is different, try that and see what happens.
  21. I prefer using Firestorm to upload temporary textures too, but you should be aware of the old standard method as well .... log in to the beta (Aditi) grid for your testing. You get L$25K of free Lindens, usable only on Aditi, so you have plenty of cash to upload textures with. You can't transfer those textures to the main grid, but that's fine. When you have a perfect texture to upload, you can move back to the main grid and pay your L$10.
  22. Yay! I'm alive! The stars have re-aligned and I can log in as myself again. :smileylol:
  23. I'm finally able to log in as myself. In my hours off, though, I have been listening to a far-off voice in the void that suggested yet another solution..... uIsSimpleInteger( vStrTxt ){ vStrTxt = llList2String( llParseString2list( vStrTxt, [" "], [] ), 0 ); if (~llListFindList( ["+", "-"], [llGetSubString( vStrTxt, 0, 0 )] )){ vStrTxt = llGetSubString( vStrTxt, 1, -1 ); } return (string)((integer)vStrTxt) == vStrTxt;}//-- fails on hexadecimal and scientific notation This approach resembles the one I posted earlier, but is more compact, since it doesn't step through the message string one character at a time but grabs the whole banana in one bite. It doesn't address the trailing carriage return challange, but that's easy enough to tag on.
  24. When you become a Premium member, you get a waiver for the land fees for a 512 sq m parcel on the Mainland. You may choose to use that waiver to claim a Linden Home, which sits on its own 512 sq m parcel, or you may apply the waiver to any other parcel that you buy on the Mainland. That is, if you buy a 512 sq m parcel, your land fees on it will be $0. If you buy a parcel that is in the next tier ( 512 < x < 1024) , you pay $3 a month instead of the normal $8 for a parcel in that tier. See here for more information >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043#Section_.3
