  1. What kind of protectiuon are you interested in? Nobody can get access to your account unless you give them your password, either on purpose or because you fell for a phishing scam. Your account may have been compromised if: You can't access your account. You suddenly notice a reduced available balance on the payment source you have on file. If this happens, follow the instructions at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Password-and-account-information/ta-p/700017#Section_.5 immediately. Muting someone will only make it so that you cannot her what that person says. If you send the person an IM or give the person anything, s/he will be immediately unmuted. In any case, muting does nothing to protect your account. It is simply a convenience so that you do not have to interact with the person verbally. If you have concerns about being hassled in world or worse, I suggest reading the advice in the following two articles: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-deal-with-abuse-and-harassment/ta-p/1339983 http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Fr43k_Paine/Dealing_With_Griefers
  2. That's about what I expected, Drongle. Thanks. I'm comfortable with a little randomness.
  3. Not with me. Like all the other people who volunteer in this resident-to-resident Answer service, I am not a Linden. If you want to file a support ticket, you'll have to go to https://support.secondlife.com/contact-support/ . However, you should be aware that unless you are a Premium member of SL, you cannot submit a support ticket for a technical issue. Here's a list of the support categories >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Types_of_Support_Case It might be easier to try and solve your problem here. First, if you are having this problem even after you have detached everything (including your AO, any other HUDs, and your prim (or mesh) hair), then the activating object is evidently not attached to you. It is quite probably nearby. To verify, teleport to a different sim and see if the problem goes away. If so, you'll have to go back to where you were having problems and start hunting for a scripted object that is activating you. It's probably something that you sat on, if that helps to narrow it down. When you do finally solve the problem -- you will finally solve it, really -- then you can prevent it in the future by making a small change in your Firestorm Preferences. Go to Preferences >>> Firestorm >>> Protection and click Revoke Permissions: Revoke on Stand. That will automatically release the permission to animate your avatar as soon as you stand up from any scripted object. It won't fix your current problem, but it will keep it from happening again. If you want to provide extra information or need to clarify your question, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do not start a new thread. Doing that makes it hard for us to see what other people have already suggested, and it pushes other residents' questions off the page.
  4. That makes sense, but how much is a "fair amount" of space? Or is this like the length of a piece of string? I guess I've managed to avoid this problem before by either creating models that were too small to walk through or ones that are large enough that the problem never arose. Arton's solution worked perfectly in this case, even though the cubes in my physics model were, in fact, touching. This morning I have been going back to Drongle's notes in this forum to refresh my memory about when to Analyse and when to avoid it, with the result that I am finally beginning to make some practical sense of it. This business about leaving space still has me puzzled, though. Is there any sort of "rule" or is this "whatever works"?
  5. We get this same question from some inventive resident about once a month. As far as I know, people have been asking it since SL began 10 years ago. The answer is always NO, and Linden Lab will be glad to accept an AR if someone files one against you. "Remotely monitoring conversations in Second Life, posting conversation logs, or sharing conversation logs without the participants' consent are all prohibited." You can't unilaterally define someone else's consent -- especially in a statement that the other person is rarely likey to see. "If you leave your car running at the curb while you go into the store, unless you tell me explicitly that it is not OK to drive off with it, I may do so."
  6. You can either keep polling with llGetObjectDetails or you can train your vanishing object to ping you regularly and then listen for when its ping stops.
  7. BINGO! I almost never click Analyze, so I had forgotten that it makes a difference in this case. OK, now I can go to bed. Thanks, arton.
  8. OK, I know I'm tired, but I shouldn't be too tired to figure this out. It's a dirt simple doorway. I've done this many times before, but this one's not behaving. I have used a really simple physics shape that's just a simplified version of the simple frame itself. I have set Physics Shape Type to PRIM, but I can't walk through it. What am I missing?

  10. Cool! I missed her blog this week. Thanks, Innula
  11. That depends on what you mean. When you open an account, it has a unique username and UUID. There can be only one with those labels. You can open a second account -- actually, up to 5 accounts -- and each will have a unique name and UUID. We call those alts. You can log in with both accounts at once, if you like, and control your alts separately. So, if that's what you mean by having a second avatar, you need a second account. Your avatar in world, however, can change shape, skin, and gender as much as you like. You can certainly save many different appearances as outfits and then switch from one to another any time you want. Your username and UUID don't change, but you don't look like the same person. If that's what you mean by having a second avatar, go right ahead. You don't need a new acccount to create as many avatars as you want.
  12. Yes, ribbon particles are in beta still, but a few people are already playing with them. AFAIK, there's no scheduled release date yet.
  13. No. You will have to send a notecard or a group notice with an attached LM for your new store to all your customers, and then go through the very laborious process of replacing your old LM with your new one in every single vendor. Old LMs simply go stale. :smileysad:
  14. Welcome to Second Life, Mr2X -- If you just paid for a Premium membership, then as part of the deal you get a waiver that can be applied toward paying monthly land fees on the SL mainland. You may use it in either of two ways: 1. You may request a Linden Home. Linden Homes are rental units, each on a 512 sq m. parcel of land. Your land fee waiver covers the entire cost of monthly rental, and the house itself is included in the deal. Read the link to see the full details about the features and convenental restrictions on Linden Homes. 2. You may buy land on the mainland, paying the up-front purchase price for the land itself (currently ~L$1 per sq m) and then using your waiver to cover the monthly land fees for the first 512 sq m. You may buy or build a house or other structure on that land, or leave it empty if you wish. See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043 You may decide not to use your land fee waiver, of course, in which case you are still free to rent land from other residents, or buy land in private (non-mainland) regions. You may want to take a free class on land management tonight (and every Friday night) at Caledon Oxbridge University to learn more and to ask questions of an expert. How to Buy and Rent Land in SL Time: Friday, 17:00 SLT Instructor: Lindal Kidd You do not have to have land in Second Life to have fun but it sure helps! Introduction to Land will teach you the basics of how to find, buy or rent, and sell land in Second Life. There is also an introduction to land controls, and a discussion of the risks and rewards of land on Private Estates versus the Linden Lab owned Mainland. Caledon Oxbridge offers classes every week. All classes are free and open to everyone. Unless otherwise noted, classes are taught at the Caledon Oxbridge Lecture Hall located between the "Cathedral/Gateway" and the "College of Avatar Motion". Location: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Oxbridge/78/140/29/ Website: http://www.caledonoxbridge.org/
  15. There's no way to change those ranges, because they are not using a scanner or radar beam. They are using a function similar to what you would use as a LSL scripter if you looked for an avatar's position with llGetObjectDetails ([OBJECT_POSITION]). That is, it accesses the server's own databases directly, where details about each object's location, speed, etc. are maintained. I'm not sure why you are asking, but it might be helpful to note that at least in the Firestorm viewer, you can put colored rings on the minimap to show the range of spoken and shouted chat. You'd do that in Preferences >>> Colors >>> Minimap.
  16. Then if you aren't ready to learn to do the work yourself, be prepared to pay to buy one that someone has already made, or to have someone make a custom one.
  17. Try clearing your browser's cache. If that doesn't work, try using a different web browser.
  18. Firefox? I assume you mean Firestorm. Anyway, check to be sure that you have check the proper permissions in Preferences >>> Sound & Media to enable streaming music and media. Then double check to be sure that you have made an exception for SLPlugin.exe in your firewall and anti-virus programs. If you have several viewers installed, you have to allow to SLPlugin for each one access through your firewall, because you will have a separate instance of SLPlugin.exe in each viewer's folder on your computer.
  19. I'm surprised that worked. (You probably were too.) The only way I can imagine to straighten it out is to call the LL Billing Office and ask for their help. If you have a non-technical issue related to billing concerns, you can call the Linden Lab billing team at the following toll-free numbers: US/Canada: 800-294-1067 France: 0805-101-490 Germany: 0800-664-5510 Japan: 0066-33-132-830 Portugal: 800-814-450 Spain: 800-300-560 UK: 0800-048-4646 Brazil: 0800-762-1132 Long distance ( not free, but you can use Skype to save some cost ) : 703-286-6277 **Note: Support is offered only in English
  20. That would be a very convenient option but sadly not one that's available to us. Not only are your items arranged randomly, the random order changes from one day to the next at times.
  21. Aha! Good to know. Thanks, Maddy. Everything I know about Macs, other than a two-year run-in with them back in the 90s, is second-hand, and my information was clearly incomplete or out of date.
  22. They're in World >>> Show More or you can still get to them with CTRL+ Shift + Alt + P
  23. I know this sounds silly, but are you sure that you are going to the right place? Why would there be a Linden Rental sign on your friend's skybox? If you want to provide extra information or need to clarify your question, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do not start a new thread. Doing that makes it hard for us to see what other people have already suggested, and it pushes other residents' questions off the page.
  24. If you are able to log in but find yourself under water (all you can see is a blue screen), check your location. See if you are near the SIM corner, at 10, 10, 10. If so, you almost certainly have a problem gesture. See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/gesture_issues for a full explanation and solution.
  25. Your hair base is the bald cap that you wear under your prim hair. Changing your hair base is one of many strategies that force the servers to render your avatar again. If you don't happen to be wearing a hair base, because you are wearing mesh hair with an alpha layer, for example, then don't worry about it. Use another method. The methods recommended at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail almost always solve a bake fail problem. If all else fails --- I wouldn't normally say this was necessary -- you can reinstall firestorm. If so, do a clean install. Here's how >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall
