  1. My favorite scene in "The Artist" is when Dujardin is at his dressing table and the movie briefly crosses into sound, then falls back into silence. I thought that was brilliant. I'm a fan of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and others of the Max Roach/Mack Sennet era. One of my favorite movies is Chaplin's "Gold Rush". I'd seen it projected on the wall of my barn when I was a kid, with no sound at all. Then I saw it with the sound track that Chaplin composed. And finally about a dozen years ago, I saw it with live scoring from a string quartet from Chicago called "No Talking Please". Before the screening, they discussed how one scores for a silent movie, with each character having a musical theme, which is woven into the score whenever the character is on screen. The emotional state of the character is conveyed through key, melody and intonation changes in the character's theme. They then went on to show the film while playing live, just under the screen. It was absolutely wonderful. The movie came to life as it had never done before. I have watched it since with Chaplin's score again, and it's not the same. Charlie was a genius to be sure, but those four young people from Chicago captured something he missed, and their screening of "The Gold Rush" will forever be a special memory to me. I doubt I will ever watch the movie again.

The thread must be buried in the archives now, but here's what I posted back then. http://www.flickr.com/photos/val-inshan/sets/72157632131666692/ Oooh, that's from the "Movie Star" thread in the old forum, I remember those!!! These were my B&W contributions to that thread...

But I'm wasting my damn time complaining to you, you're French too. Mind the froggies, Maddy. They can get dangerous when they come by two. Don't you go serving me four frog's legs, Val! All I wanted was a root-beer float and all I got was heartache from avoiding heartburn.

  10. Hi Drago, SLURLs do NOT start with "sl", so maybe the problem is with the SLURL you are using. I've seen SLURLs in two forms: The preferred form actually links to LL's SLURL creation page, which detects your browser and produces an appropriate SLURL for it. Those links look like this... http://slurl.com/secondlife/simname/X/Y/Z That website (slurl.com) examines your browser and constructs a SLURL that will be recognized as requiring the launch of the SL application. It places that link inside the "Teleport Now" button. You can right click on that button and select "Copy Link" to get a copy of the SLURL constructed for your Mac. And that SLURL will look like this, which is the actual address passed to Safari by slurl.com... secondlife://simname/X/Y/Z So, examine the SLURL that is giving you trouble and make sure it's in one of those two forms. Good luck!

My guess is that it's in the viewer code. I agree. It's either in the app or the OS. I sometimes see apps mishandle focus changes. Restarting the app sometimes clears the problem. Back in my Win XP days, restarting the PC usually fixed it.
  13. 8-24-2013 The FBI raids Linden Lab headquarters after receiving an anonymous tip, discovering that the building actually houses a phone sex operation known internationally as the "Mumbai Mamas". For years, the Mamas had been using a sham company, Linden Lab, and their online virtual world Second Life as a cover to conceal their actual money making enterprise. During a sweep of the building, agents discover that the server farm upon which Second Life runs is actually an old Gateway pizza box style PC in the break room, used to lift an espresso machine to a comfortable working height. Leader of the operation, Sashrod Vikzenhumpoor (SL name: Sashay Vikzen), aka Rod Humble (SL name: Rodvik Linden) told authorities that she had been masquerading, with the help of a great deal of theatrical makeup, as the company president since taking control of the firm from aging Bollywood sex symbol Markishna Vinking (SL name: Mark Kingdon) in 2010. Technical difficulties eventually proved Sashrod's undoing, as advertisements for the group's phone sex services were inadvertently redirected onto the Second Life Forums whenever one of the call girls brewed a cup of espresso. So before leaving, i propose you to try a last thing. Tomorrow at 8 am SLT (5pm french timezone), ill be hosting one of the famous Hippie Bowman's sunday breakfast. Every sunday we meet there and we eat a tasty breakfast and dance. There are usually ONLY sweet and great persons.. All friendly.... Try it and let us know... It will happen in my garden, so look in my profile picks and you will find it in the 1rst and 2nd picks. You will land in my store, but just make some steps outside, in the back of the garden and you will see us. Im pretty sure (if all this is true) that you wont regret it. Then you will decide if you leave or not. We will be glad to see you there :smileyhappy: Ooooh, I wonder if Parrick keeps his Lindens in his pockets.

I knew it!!! These are dragees!!! Do you know what would happen if I dropped that necklace into a bottle of root beer? Do you?!!! Hippie!! Make her stop!!!! She's trying to kill me!!!!!!

I asked for French Vanilla Ice-Cream! What's the matter with you French?! Hippie puts some vanilla Ice Cream in Maddys root beer. Peace! Thank you again, Hippie! Haven't you been eating at Val's place? If that's the kind of stuff she keeps in her gourmet kitchen, you better keep some TUMS in your wallet.

  22. Parick, On day two of my first tour of SL, I found myself in the company of someone who'd become my partner within weeks. I absolutely do NOT recommend trying that at home! I was not terribly careful, and so got exactly what I asked for. I am, I hope, a bit wiser now. By the time I joined SL, I had twenty years of online experience. I can't count the number of trepidatious entries I made into new chat room or forums, but each time the experience was easier and the results more rewarding. Give yourself some time. SL is actually filled with lovely and interesting people. It may take time to cultivate a circle of friends, not so much because we're hard to grow, but because cultivation has always required effort. Hugs, Maddy
