  1. Hello, I am thinking about buying some main land (probably between 2048 and 2252 square meters) to house a skybox to be used as a group meeting place. Becasue I have never bought land before (I don't think aquiring a Linden home counts ) I want to ask some questions that may have pretty obvious answers to people who have done this before. If I decide to just buy cheaper PG land, what can't I or group members do on it behind closed doors inside the skybox? What are the real advantages of buying more expensive Zindra land?If the skybox is very high in the sky, does it matter if the skybox is not exactly the same shape as the land and overhangs some edges slightly? (I realise this would be inconsiderate and unacceptable at ground level, but will it matter thousands of feet in the air given the odd shape of some land parcels? Or would furniture risk getting auto-returned?)Are there any limits to heights you can set the skybox at on land you own? For example, at what heights will you not be able to build in the skybox, or teleport systems from the ground level fail? How can you tell if you are buying land next to a lag creating neighbour? Will lag at ground level affect you hundreds of feet in the air in a skybox? Or is lag equal everywhere in any given sim?Is land next to Linden shorefronts or Linden roads really worth more? Does it have less lag, or is it just higher priced becasue it looks nicer and adds open space?Feel free to also point out any other important issues about buying land for skyboxes I haven't even thought about. Thanks in advance for any help and advice, Sonya.
  2. Hi, I'm looking for a nice peice of land - nothing fancy or too expensive, about 2048 square meters, which should support 468 prims. But I've noticed that when you look at some plots for sale that the about land tab seems to give different info, presumably becasue it is grouping together all the individual plots the seller currently owns. When you buy land (not rent) will you get whatever prim allowance that many sqaure meters entitles you to, or if the previous owner has used the prim allowance already on other land they owned could you find yourself with less prims to play with than you thought you would get? I assume you will get whatever prim allowance that square meterage entitles you to and the seller will have to deal with the drop in their overall prim allowance, but it is best to check these things before buying Also, as I own a Linden Home already, would my own prim allowance be group together with both peices of land, or kept seperate as they would be on different land masses? Many thanks for any info. Sonya.
  3. Thanks Irene, I thought I was, but it is good to get confirmation from somebody else.
  4. Hello, I've started selling a few items on the new Marketplace. But I remember the fuss that was kicked up with the the old XL street when the Lindens were planning to charge merchants who sold freebies on there additional fees. As far as I can tell, there is no such plan to levy additional fees for freebies and low cost promotional items on the new marketplace, and just charge them the regular commission fees the same as every other item. Am I right, or am I missing something in the small print like a minimum commision charge on a sale that could be higher than the price of the item, or plans to bring in a "freebie-tax" at some point in the future? Sonya.
  5. Yes, I stumbled on a few other discussions all with the same problem. Although it annoying, I suppose it is only to be expected, as the Linden main servers are having to hold a lot of info. There are bound to be a few glitches now and then.
  6. Thanks.. the Lindens seem to reboot the region quite regularly anyway so I'll probably just wait for that. I assume this happens to other people quite a lot then?
  7. Thanks Kanini, I agree, the important thing is to have fun in SL. I have no intention of become a major landlord, I just want a place of my own to build and play. But I am considering becoming a small scale landlord just as a way of covering the land tier costs. I'll try the wiki links again, but I tend to find about half the SL wiki links never work and come up with "page missing" error messages. Is it just me? It is very frustrating, as I am sure lots of the information I ask about here on the forums is hidden somewhere in the wiki, if I could only just find and get at it. But I'll have another go at those Land links.
  8. Hi, I deleted 5 prims out of my home a couple of days ago. But they still seem to be showing in the about land viewer page as "selected or sat upon". Does anybody know how to get rid of them?
  9. Hi, I'm thinking about buying some land... can anybody point me in the direction of a good "how to" guides, as all the land links in the wikki seem broken. Also, how do you search for available land? - the main land auctions on here don't seem to have a lot of listings, and the land sales tab in search seems broken in viewer 2 at the moment. (Even more broken than the rest of search in viewer 2). Thanks in advance for any help, Sonya.
  10. I 'll close this now as I think it has been very quickly and helpfully answered. Thankyou.
  11. As it looks like listing the site in search would cost something like 8p a week, or under £5 a year (depending on what the dollar is trading at compared to the Pound), I think I could live with that And as I want to create a private place, I probably wouldn't bother advertising the site anyway if it was group owned. Or are there some more land liabilities to consider? I'm more worried about being left holding the "land tier" baby. Sounds like if other people pulled out I would have to pledge to pay more land tier myself to make up the difference or risk losing the land. Is that right?
  12. Hello, I am thinking of buying some land to build a private play area that only group members can access. While I don't mind buying the land and buildings etc., I don't want to get left paying the monthly land tier usage fees all alone for years on end as well. I realise that group members can chose to donate land tier to the group to reduce this bill, but if the donated land tier does not cover all the full monthly tier bill who pays the difference? Me alone as land owner (with the land deeded or given to the group in some way), or is it split between all group members with "pay-group-liabilities roles" equally? (I would also like to point out I will be very, very open about this - I do not want a situation where people join a group without knowing the implications and then end up getting billed unexpectedly!). Thanks in advance for any help and advice, Sonya.
  13. I think I agree with everything you have said Suella. I don't like it myself when you buy an outfit but can't modify the prim accessories to fit your own body shape. I myself am less likely to buy no-mod items becasue I know they will probably not fit me right. And thank you for pointing out it is better to set permisions on the rezzed object rather than from the inventory- that's the sort of thing you only normally find out hasn't worked when its too late.
  14. All good points Suella, I just want to get into good habits and ways of working from day one if I can - that is If I ever get to a standard where I would feel happy asking people to pay for stuff I had made I don't think copy botting is everywhere - most people are decent and don't want to steal. But I'm guessing if you accidentally left your items copy AND transfer it would appear in a freebie box sooner or later
  15. I am so tempted to give this the "Correct Answer" flag Sal. It would at the very least stop the copybotters breeding.
  16. Sonya laughs - tell me something I don't already know! I realise nothing you can do will eliminate all theft - that's why in real world retail you budget for security and shop lifting losses. Nothing you can do will stop all of the thefts, but you don't leave a shop unlocked and the alarm turned off when you close and go home on an evening. You do what you can to slow the thieves down and make life less easy for them. So seriously, some creators say it is better to make items copy/no mod/no transfer. And others say it is better to make its no copy/no mod/ transfer. Which setting will deter the copybotter for slightly longer, and why? Or does it really not make much differnce as long as your items can't be modified?
  17. I am just starting to build and create, so probably a little time off wanting to start selling my own stuff. But when I do, what steps should I be taking from day one to try to stop my work being copied or pirated?
  18. I was thinking more of rezzing shopping bags from my inventory to unpack them - you know how they never appear quite where you expected them to.
  19. I have never used Emerald - partly becasue I don't want to become reliant on something we have no guarantee will be around forever in SL. That said, its seems to solve a lot of common problems in SL, so maybe I should try it out.
  20. I've heard people talk about having a god-shell to make themselves impervious to attack - is that the same principle as the hollowed out cylinder? I can see how the cylinder would work, as no-one could click on you any more. It seems a shame to have to go to the hassle of rezing platforms in the sky (and wouldn't want to drop something off the edge - that would seem inconsiderate to the people below) but sounds like a workable solution. I suppose if someone really wanted to they could follow you and harrass you in the air, but its much more unlikely.
  21. Hello everybody, Normally I find most people in SL inteligent and friendly. But yesterday I went to a public sandbox to unpack some boxes that had too many prims to unpack at home, and some idiots thought it would be fun to ram me repeatedly with their flying car. They then moaned and complained when I right clicked on them to imobilise the vehicle so I could get on with quietly unpacking my boxes and sorting out my inventory. So I have been thinking maybe I should make a special outfit for when using public sandboxes. My idea is to incorportate some features that mean I can just ignore this type of behaviour. I don't want to have to even talk to them, as that seems to give them sort of gratification if they get to feel they are spoiling someone's day. Being able to put them on my block list and totally ignore them becasue they couldn't do anything to me is the best way of dealing with this sort of immature person. If I had wandered into the middle of a wargame sim and got shot that  would be my fault, but to be hasssled becasue I wanted to quietly use a  public Linden sandbox is unacceptable. Can anybody recommend anything like "anti-push" scripts, ways to make my avatar "phantom" or sheilds that mean I can't be shot or pushed. I don't want anything "offensive" as that is just sinking to their level, but passive defensive features, so ideally I don't even notice this type of person or behaviour in the future? Sonya.
  22. Thanks Linda, I think. You lost me with some of the technical speak Guess the thing to do now is unpack the box, plus it in, and see if it works. If I am never seen in SL again then you all know I am sat cursing my new computer somewhere. Sonya.
  23. Thankyou Veritable, The link to the drivers will be useful. Nice to know I should be OK - although I expect lag will still mean I walk through the occasional wall Sonya
  24. Thankyou Cinn, I have pretty much been the walking wounded in Sl for the last few months due to my computer struggling with the graphics, and it would have been annoying if the new computer wouldn't fix things. Sonya.
