  1. Do it by eye, basically. Zoom out the 3D view in Blender so the cylinder is roughly the size you think you'll see it at the most and adjust the number of verts until it looks right. Do bear in mind that smooth shading hides a LOT, so you'll be surprised how, in certain circumstances, you can get away with very, very low vert counts. I made my partner a necklace a while back. The number of verts that make up the extruded shape for the cord on it? 3.
  2. You may get some funkiness -- which Blender will warn about -- when unwrapping an object if it's scale has been messed with. You can fix this by going to Object > Apply > Rotation & Scale in object mode. This may also help fix the disparity between Blender and SL's versions of the mesh.
  3. Even if the license wrangling was completely ignored, you shouldn't import ANY Poser / DAZ content into Second Life. Why? Because it's meant for CGI and still image rendering, NOT a real-time environment like SL. Those models are very high poly and are completely unsuitable. Your import costs will be high, your land impact will be insane if you ever try to rez it on the ground and you will be a walking framerate disaster.
