  1. Caroline, I take your point (and thank you for explaining to me what RETAIL means in the real world, clearly I only exist in SL and therefore need such explanations) that it is possible to have customer service from a reseller. My experience is that resellers provide the same goods that I could buy from the creator, but with no added value whatsoever, and far less interest in providing prompt and helpful customer service. Plust, the stuff resellers tend to sell is outdated, compared to the stuf I like to buy. What would your USP* be as a reseller? Your suggestion that "the right place, the right time" would be a USP is weak at best. Assume I need a bikini, and am at the beach. I am in SL. I therefore have access to the Internet. I therefore have access to the MarketPlace and can buy ANYTHING I WANT wherever I am in-world. SL's handy like that. A personal dislike of mine is arriving at a beach and having to walk through miles of dreary generic malls all selling the same old stuff that's been around for years. If I want a bikini, I will find one that I like, put it on, and THEN go to a beach that isn't littered with stores. Clearly I am not your target market.** Building a business and writing about it is perfectly ethical. I have a nasty feeling though, that (based on your previous blog and forum posts) you will do a half-hearted job as a shopkeeper for a short time, write something ill-considered about it, and then spend 3 weeks posting the link to your blog on here at every opportunity. You're right. Your motivation*** is none of my concern. But I still won't be buying anything from you. *USP means Unique Selling Point, and is the special secret magic reason why someone would buy your goods over someone else's similar or identical goods. **Target market means the customer you are aiming at. ***Motivation means the reason you do something
  2. Just as an observation, I don't think I'd buy anything from your store(s). You've made it clear that you want to "sell" as an experiment, and that you'd be reselling stuff rather than making it yourself. That's two reasons right there to make me think I'll choose to spend my money somewhere else. Practical reason: If you only resell stuff, I'd prefer to buy it from the creator, as then I have the option of decent customer service if I ever have any problems. Ethical reason: If you're just doing it as an experiment for blog-fodder, why would I choose to give you my cash? Also, malls are fine, but in my experience almost always empty. When I shop, I look on MarketPlace first, then visit the in-world store. And I never buy from resellers.
  3. Whether it's allowed or not, I'd suggest that fishing for compliments in order to dish out LMs to your store is a bit, well, needy. If someone ASKS you about your outfit, fantastic, give them an LM, tell them you made it, offer to TP them to the store if they're keen, but what you're talking about sounds pretty irritating. If someone I'd never seen before asked me what I thought of their outfit, I'd probably be polite enough to say "It's fine," but I'd get annoyed if they saw that as my permission to be sent stuff I hadn't asked for.
  4. Not entirely sure I understand what you're asking, but the gist of it seems to be "I'm not keen on the first things I've found on the MP because I think they're too revealing. Does anyone find that sexy?" I suggest the answer to that is "Yes." If you aren't finding what you like on the MP, try searching in-world with the Adult filter turned off, using terms like Kawaii and do a bit of store-hopping. Good luck!
  5. If the seller is not appearing in the SL in-world search, it looks as though you might be out of luck. Not that it's much use to you now, but I'd always advise looking at an in-world store first, and if there isn't one, and the vendor is a new av, avoid buying from them. I may be being a little suspicious but there's no way I'd spend several thousand L$ on an item on the MP without being pretty confident the seller wasn't flaky. Sorry you had such a tiresome experience.
  6. You want someone to make you a virtual copy of a RL statue, using a photo of the RL statue as a pattern? That's not breaching copyright. Their statue - the virtual one - will be an entirely new and separate piece of art. The fact that It is based on a RL statue is not relevant, unless they use a copyrighted logo or something on It. It would be like me drawing a copy of a RL photograph. If I photographed It, and claimed It was the original, yes, breach of copyright. Drawing a picture using the photograph as a pattern, no. It's a new piece of art, a separate creation. If you send them copies of the book cover photo you mentioned, however, you may well be breaching copyright. I suggest you find a public domain photo of the statue online, or ask the SL statue creator to look at a copy of the book you have.
  7. Sorry to arrive to this conversation a little late, but just to clarify something: If the person in question is wearing a set of mesh breast implants, they don't need to wear an alpha, and are probably unlikely to be wearing any "normal" clothes underneath them. If the breasts fail to rezz, hey presto, they are topless (albeit with a flat or flattish chest) which could cause a problem in some areas. It's one reason why I prefer to avoid any G areas, and a lot of M ones.
  8. Hello - I'd suggest you also look at the Height Offset feature. Some ultra high-heeled platform shoes will sink into the ground, and what you need to do is make your av "float" above the ground when you wear them. This will mean that the sole of the shoe touches the floor, whilst the bottom of your av's foot is several inches off the ground - exactly as it would be in RL if you were wearing platform shoes. Do as has already been advised, stand on a posestand, adjust the shoes to fit your feet and legs, then adjust the Height Offset till the shoes are properly on the ground, and you can see all of the sole/platform. Remember to adjust the Height Offset back to 0 when you take the shoes off, or you'll be floating above the ground, though!
  9. I wrote a disseration for my degree. While I was an undergraduate, in fact. Maybe it's a terminology thing.
  10. Hello Rhonda, welcome to SL. A word of advice to add to all the good suggestions people have given so far: Please be very careful about accepting "free" skins, hair, shapes or whatever from people. I was given a whole pile of stuff when I was new, much of which turned out to be stolen (copybotted is the term used in-world) and it was removed from my inventory by the Linden Labs team. I was sent a message telling me that the content had been removed, and for some time I was worried that I had somehow stolen stuff without intending to! I'd suggest your best bet is to join groups where the store owners and content creators give out free stuff, and there have already been a ton of great suggestions for those. Enjoy your time in SL!
  11. There's also Pocket Multiverse which is available as an app for iPhones. Text only, but handy for staying in touch if you're away from your SL-friendly hardware. I'm such an addict.
  12. Hello - you could try Radegast, which is a handy text-based client. http://radegast.org/wp/ It seems to work pretty well, and without all the graphics I manage to run it on my old laptop, which no longer runs SL in the full version.
