This seems more like what you would say if you were a certain cretinous world leader to deflect and ‘punch back’: “Well, I may be silly, but you are covered in creepy hairy things!”

LOL. I really shouldn't say, because the tangential derail is so much funnier. :D

Scylla was saying that with each comment she became less attractive, devolving, if you will. This is an illustration showing the devolution of humans. See, the riffs are funnier.

Ah, sorry, I am kinda slow, lol. Funny. 😁

"Better" or "worse" are of course subjective judgements. For many of those who, to take a for instance, enjoy mostly the consumerist aspects of SL, and maybe most especially fashion and avatar customization, SL is unquestionably "better" now than it was in 2008, when I joined. Although I lament (mostly quietly) the way in which a lot of diversity in clothing seems to have been lost, there is absolutely no question that there is more really good looking clothing now -- even if it frequently is not to my personal taste. And Bento avatars are simply waaaaaaaay nicer looking than system ones. Speaking as a photographer, now, I can't imagine going back to the status quo in terms of avatar appearance ca. 2008.

YMMV, as they say. And it's a mixed bag. I do miss the heady days when SL seemed vastly more social and dynamic and creative than it does now, but there are other ways in which the platform has unquestionably improved. It depends upon what you are looking for. And, if one is willing to put the time and effort into it (and I don't necessarily have the time), it is still possible to be very creative here, if you wish.

Too bad we can't have the social environment from back then and the goddess-like avis we have now, but life seems to work according to the Law of Conservation of Good Stuff. Reminds me of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides now...~

I think that the forums do attract a different and mostly distinct kind of resident, but it's a group that cuts across a lot of different cultures within SL. When I first started using it, it was almost exclusively what I've called SLoldbies here. That changed a lot around 2010, I think, but it's true that the people here are generally better informed about, and more interested in SL than the average resident. (That could be extended to other platforms and forums too, including the old feeds, Flickr, FB, Discord, and the SL blogosphere). But if you look at individuals here, it's still an extremely diverse lot.

Sorry, I probably did not explain that very well. Yes, from what I have seen in the Forums, people who participate are very different in many, many ways (witness the contentiousness that arises in most threads, reminds me of the 'Tastes Great!"/"Less Filling!" beer commercials, lol), and fall into very different cohorts inworld. But I feel they are non-representative of (and this is what I was trying to avoid saying in the first place) the 'average' or 'general' or 'typical' resident. As I mentioned above, I have never run into anyone in SL who I see in the Forums, and have known anyone inworld who even mentioned them. Honestly, I did not even know the Forums existed until a few months ago, which probably says something about me, but also I think perhaps indicates that the Forum is not important at all to at least the variety of people I have met inworld over the last 12 years. I have known a few people who keep up with SL changes, mostly creators and land owners, but never heard anyone mention the Forums.

Just to show you how clueless I am, though, I also only recently discovered that Flickr was a big deal for SL photographers, or really that people even put a lot of time into taking SL photographs (or, 'snapshots,' as one person prefers ;) ).

    Hope this helps...

    Carol :)

Read up on the diffusion of innovations.

I like this model, it fits my relationship to SL better than anything I have seen so far in the thread. I came into SL in August of 2007, but definitely don't feel like an Oldie. I am always looking for something new and interesting, and at that time there were enough press on SL that I heard of it, and thought it was interesting. I had never been involved with anything like that before, and immediately loved it. However, although I care about other people, and love to help people, I don't much care about communities or organizations and really have done absolutely nothing to support or enrich SL beyond participating in the economy and donating to sims I like.

When I came in, I could buy anything I wanted (a big change in my SL experience was when I found you could use RL funds to buy Lindens, lol). I rarely made anything at all, and when I did it was something very, very simple, like a cube the size of my head to do proportioning of my avi. I have learned slightly more lately, but very slightly. To me, the real Oldies are the people who had to (I think) even make their avis, and certainly had to create a lot of what they used. I seem to recall someone telling me that people *had* to do a lot of scripting in the early years just to function (I had a partner who had been around almost from the beginning, and she told me a bit).

When I came in, a lot of other people were also hearing about SL, and it was a boom time for SL. I try to STFU about it these days, and have finally moved on, but SL was very, very different then, and for me, better. I would even the beautiful avis we can make now for the environment we had back then. But anyway, I see myself as being in the Early Majority, not as an Early Adopter. When I got here, a lot of other people were already here.

Wrt history, I guess I am a bad person, as I never really cared about the aspects of SL from before I came in, or those unrelated to my interests after I joined. I just focused on what I liked to do, and did not care about SL beyond that. Honestly, I still don't that much, other than I worry about SL dying off. For quite a long time, I didn't much care, as SL was mostly dead for me anyhow, but now I have found some things I enjoy, and would hate to see SL disappear.

One last thing, I wonder if the people in the Forum are a different sort than people who don't participate here? I only joined the Forum a few months ago, and only to find out about the whole Bellissaria mess. I don't know anyone in SL who uses the Forum, they just do stuff in SL. OTOH, many people in the Forum have been involved with some sort of forum as long as they have been in SL, and have more of a history with and interest in the broader aspects of SL. So I wonder if this is a very different cohort than most other SL residents fall into.

    Hi there,

I'm a 24-year old anthropology student at the University of Copenhagen doing an essay regarding people with disabilities in virtual worlds such as SL. More specifically, I'm interested in the opportunities that virtual worlds can provide for people with physical/mental disabilities, and what virtual platforms like SL can do to create better user-experiences for people with disabilities. If any of you are interested in the talking with me or chatting with me in this forum regarding the above mentioned or related topics, please do not hesitate to contact me on mayada_10@hotmail.com or wbc162@alumni.ku.dk.

    Best regards,
    Mayada

I know quite a few people in SL who have disabilities to various degrees and use SL to enable them to interact with other people and to have experiences they cannot have IRL. The disabilities range from deafness to limitations of physical mobility to emotional and psychological disabilities. I am not one of those people, so I cannot contribute directly to your project, but I can tell you there are a lot of people with disabilities to whom SL is vitally important. Unfortunately, the vast majority of SL residents do not use the Forum, including all the people I know who have disabilities. I think you might have to go inworld to find people, which (like finding anything else of interest in SL) will likely be low-yield and very time consuming. Sounds like you got a couple of good leads upthread, though.

I also know quite a few who live a life here they cannot IRL not related to disabilities, but more related to social acceptance of their expression of their true selves (or even just to explore a side of themselves without the heavy risks and consequences they would fave IRL) or a lack of a social network IRL. This is different from what you are asking about, but serves a very important outlet for a lot of people.

One last thing, it kind of blows my mind that any 24-year-old would have a hotmail account...

lol. Right. As soon as I have one, I will cease to care.  So many people in the thread who have last names can't possibly see the appeal for those of us who don't? hi larious

I have a last name, and I can see the appeal. :)

Really, my last name no longer fits me at all, and I would like a new one. I picked the one I have a very long time ago, and it worked with what I thought I wanted to be in SL (sorta fae), but I left that all behind long ago. What I would really love, and what isn't going to happen, is being able to pick a custom new last name. I even settle for being able to have a display name that is used everywhere except for my account, but that isn't happening either. So I guess I will see what new names are on offer, and how much it costs, and go from there.

I use it, when i need to login in a situation where i dont have access to my pc or laptop. Such as: Being at work, being on a train, being at a friends house, and so on.
To do what? Nearly everything im doing using my computer, such as: teleporting, chatting, watching profiles, accessing the iventory, attach and detach items, switching to 3D mode to walk or fly anywhere i want, interacting with inworld items by sitting or touching... Actually, there is not a lot one cant do, using Lumiya.

Of course its far from being pleasant using the phone to move my avatar in SL... But it works. And maybe better than you might think. In my early days my computer had less fps than my phone now, whats around 10-20 fps, depending on where you are.
What about accessing hompepages not optimized for mobile devices on your phone? Thats also awful, and its accepted nonetheless, because people just zoom in to hit buttons or links. Having a difficult way to access something is better than none at all.

Im with you. If i could, i would order a 5K USD computer, hooking it up to a 8K display to get the best out of SL. If i could... :)

Around 10 friends out of my friendlist, what has a head count of around 90, are using mobile clients, most of them Lumiya, or textviewers for those who use iOS. And thats just the ones who told me about. Thats not a really bad rate, i would say.

If you want a real hint, where a vast amount of money was and still is burned for only a few online users at all...
Ahhh, i wont name it, but its also developed by Linden Labs somehow, it was and still is a more or less a walking simulator, and sometimes standup comedians (who are not even known outside the US territory) perform their jokes on this platform.
    Great, isnt it?

I too know several people who use Lumiya on their phones for most of their SL experience. As you say, having a massive computer and monitor is best, but some of these people are disabled, and either cannot afford a nice computer, or cannot sit in front of one for extended periods, or both. Sure, they miss out on a lot, but these people are mostly in SL for the social interactions (for some of them, this is about all the social interaction they have), and having a phone client means a lot to them.

When I was a Host, and when I did a lot of communication for my clan, I used Lumiya a lot at work (I cannot even get onto the SL website on my work computer, much less inworld). Unfortunately, it seems Lumiya is no longer supported, and of course it is not available on iOS. This is totally different from the topic of making a mobile client that has nice graphics and is good enough to interest young people, but having something basic like Lumiya for Android and iOS doesn't seem like it would take that many resources, and it keeps a certain segment of SL residents engaged.

Oh, and funny you mention websites not having mobile versions: SL doesn't, and if I have to log into SL on my phone, it is a nightmare. That and the horrible Search engine inworld just blow my mind, considering LL is supposed to be a cutting-edge tech company, and is totally an online experience. ~

That popularity amongst those communities is why I mentioned it in this thread and having something as a separate yet linked instance to the main grid that is small enough for an on the go system/use. Without those demographics being showcased SL or a form of SL it hinders the growth of SL as the years go by due to it really only being the older generation that comes here. SL is more like a meme to the younger generations now thought of as a xxx game or something where weird people hang out which is not the stereotype SL needs if it wants to garner newer users. Not to mention the learning curve.

I also think a lot of people here forget that the teen grid existed in parallel with the main 'adult grid' and it would be interesting to wonder what the subscriber base of the teen grid would be if it was updated to a separate mobile experience rather than removed completely. It was a great way for teens to get into the SL mentality in an effort to 'graduate' to the main grid, however when that grid was removed articles in game or teen blogs etc. became more and more about the Adult nature of SL rather than how cool it is to play it as a teen.

That said, with the requirement of having to use a 3rd party program to mesh due to LL not updating their prim in world building system to mesh ( a mistake), the chances of any form of interest like it had for teens or newer generations is nil - that was its defining difference as a virtual world, building in it. It is also why a new SL should have been made years ago with a better engine as well as a more common script language. For example simple building controls can be made to work very efficiently on a mobile https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tdcp.threedc and by adding these for a mobile experience it would also improve the SL UI as well into a more user friendly one without a steep learning curve.

As far as other virtual worlds go, Avakin Life is the big one that has the most similarities to SL, most popular, etc. There are others however out there that offer a more niche or simpler virtual worlds (obviously none offering custom texture etc like SL) but still very popular. e.g. Club Cooee, Woozworld, IMVU (of course), Habbo etc.

It comes down to how one would define a virtual world I suppose as some seem to think SL is a virtual world and Habbo isn't even though the same principles of a virtual world are there just done differently.

Wow, not that I know anything about the technical difficulties or whether teens/young adults would even be interested in SL, but this seems like an awesome idea to me. The screen shot in the blog post @Vanity Fair linked to reminds me so much of SL, it looks like a way better version of Lumiya (which i found perfectly serviceable for a lot of things). But I guess the technical difficulties and of course it being dependent on LL make it pretty much impossible.

Linden Lab would switch out the names for a new list at random times. Sometimes the list would be up for months and months and you would have trouble finding the first name-last name combination you wanted. I distinctly remember that "Fair" was up for only a two-week period in early 2008, along with a bunch of other common-word last names like Church and House.

And sometimes you could get a different list of last names from 3rd party sites, as Selene has said. When SL had that official tie-in with CSI:New York, there was a separate list of last names available (like Delight and my personal fave, Cliffhanger). I named a number of alts using that particular portal: Happy Delight, Hearts Delight, Joy Delight...the Delight sisters 😉

I suspect that Linden Lab will make lots of money from reintroducing last names (which, of course, is the impetus for this announcement). There is a LOT of pent-up demand.

I will be very interested to see how it is managed. Past experience does not inspire confidence.

yes there was a really odd way of doing last names.  At any given time there were about 40 Last Names available in those days. But the select pick list would only show about 12 or so at one time like you say

to get a name from the others not shown we had to refresh the list. But when refreshed, it would choose 12 (or so) at random. So some names would appear on the refresh over and over and some would take ages of refreshes to appear. Was super frustrating when a last name we knew was available  would not show up for ages if at all on that session. Why on refresh it did the random thing, instead of showing the next 12 or so available I dunno. Was like Teehee Linden was in charge of making the last name picker in those days

a few times since a Boss Linden has referred to the significant issue of people abandoning account creation on that then last name picker page. Boss Linden should go and see Teehee Linden about that, and when they go: teeheeheehee!, then Boss Linden can stick a box on their head

and this time, go with making all available last names visible and selectable by the user

In the end, like you, I probably won't much care. The name I really want, which I have in my Display Name, will for sure not be an option (well, I guess I could submit it, but little chance of it getting picked, and honestly, I would think less of it if thousands of other people had it!).

I wish we could pick our own last name. Or, even if our Display Name was more than just that, a name displayed above your head. One of my many disappointments with LL, absolutely nothing uses that name, and of course you cannot pick your own user name on the Forum. If it weren't for losing all my stuff, I might just create a new account with Caerolle.Claudel as my name. At least the names I want would be in there. But nothing I have that is of any value is transfer, so there you go.~

  12. 7 minutes ago, Mollymews said:

i had to go back and read the blog post.  The five names is about the competition that is being run injunction with the release.  5 users, from amongst those who submit last names, will win a free last name

is true what you say tho. If Mews is not submitted and/or Linden don't choose it themselves then Mews will never be on the list.  I would only select Mews as a lastname, even were I able, if I could also have Molly as my firstname. Is this that I am not sure is going to be possible.  Hope so tho. As I am not sure that I would see any point in changing to Janet Mews for example

Ah, I thought there would only be those five names.

When I joined, I think I had only a dozen or so to choose from. At the time I did not know they changed the names after so long to another set (really, only found out recently...I thought it was by location or something at the time). Either way, there was not much selection.

  13. 2 minutes ago, Mollymews said:

i will wait and see how much it costs then decide if it will be worth it to me. I can't think of any name I would jump at changing to at the moment. If I could change from Mollymews Resident to Molly Mews then I would most likely, just because

am not sure this is going to be possible tho, as even if Mews was a selectable last name then from what Linden have said previously then I can't choose Molly as a first name for Mews as MollyMews is already being used by a existing user, who happens to be me.  I am hoping that Linden will find a way to make this possible. If not then oh! well, maybe one day somehow

The way I read the blog post (and I just skimmed it, honestly) is there will only be FIVE last names to choose from. Unless you or someone else submits Mews as a suggestion and it gets picked, that will not be an option.

  14. So, we will have an extra-expensive new Premium to get last names, with a link on the Home page saying 'Get your free Linden name change!'' So you sign up to Super-Premium to get a name change, then when you go to the page, you can't get one. Oh, wow, turns out they only have the system set up for 50 name changes, and 5000 people want them, which they never ever anticipated, so you either quit your job and spent 20 hours a day clicking 'New Name Page!' (until they block more than 10 tries a day), then just have to wait months or years while LL cranks out 10 new name spots a weeks. At least, that is how Bellissaria worked out me, and I don't expect much more from LL wrt name changes.

I have a possum, that visits me almost every night as I sit on my deck.  He (or she) has been coming for years between 10pm and midnight.  I choose to believe it is the same possum.  The last 3 weeks he (or she) has gotten a fallen apple from my orchard and crawled under the fence to sit about 10 feet away loudly smacking his (or her) lips as he (or she) makes rude eating noises blocking out all the forest I sounds I usually enjoy.  I had no idea possums were such loud eaters.  Coincidentally, I lost my indoor/outdoor kitty about 3 weeks ago.  I guess I have a new cat.

    😸

Aww, that is so sweet! 😊

A little tip, though, I don’t think you can train a possum to use a litter box. 😉

I've lived in eight of the fifty states. I've lived in two distinct locals each in five of those states. I went to three different high schools. The states range from east to west coasts and points in between. I live on the border of two states now and may have another state to add to that total within the next year. The moves were not due to being part of a military family.

Funny, I've never been west of the Mississippi, though I have been to Europe several times. And I've only lived in two states, and hate them both. At least the one I live in now is slightly better than the previous one.

  19. Sorry to be the downer here, but please keep in mind when even considering acting out on such fantasies that this other person does not exist to make your life complete. Sure, perhaps they are single and lonely and you would be just what they need (you seem like a sweet, sensitive person :) ), but remember they are their own unique human being, and completely differentiate from you at this point, however possible may you be their soulmate.

Of course, a person can build and live a whole life in their head around someone, and get a lot of pleasure and fulfillment from that, with no risk of the potential tragedies happening that others have proposed. I am not suggesting finding your happiness only in your head, but rather saying that crushes based on nothing but superficial interactions often fare better there. As others have said, meaningful relationships are built on actual shared experiences and interactions, getting to know and value and treasure the wonders that are a person you love.

    FWIW,

    Caerolle :)

Hey everyone! Thank you for the replies! I will definitely check out the other threads you guys shared.

Right now with my laptop I can barely do anything in SL. I can move around but it takes forever for stuff to load and its super laggy all the time. I am going to be buying my own SIM and will need a better laptop because I will be building a lot of stuff myself. So because getting my own SIM will be a lot of work for me, I need a better SL experience. I also need a laptop because right now in my home I have nowhere to put a desktop! I have to use my laptop on my bed. And yes it can be uncomfortable but it is a necessity at this time.

As for my budget I am setting my max limit to $3,000. I am saving now and it wont be until next year when I can get a new laptop. For now I am doing research.

Thank you all for your input! I will be thoroughly researching everything :)

Good luck with everything! I think you can get a system that will meet your needs very well for that kind of money! :)
