  1. Steph, I'm working way below expected performance but there's so much you aren't telling us! "Is this correct?" - don't know, is it? So much depends on what you want it to do, and what it actually does, for a start ;-0 1. Does it compile? - ok, it's syntactically correct (no typing errors, in other words) 2. It sends a number called Link_Filter_5 is that 2002400? If not, it's never going to get to the llGetNotecardLine() function 3. If that is the case though the data is "hide_on" so, (without actually thinking it through) presumably, the script is looking for a notecard called "hide_on_config". Is it there? [sorry, I'm flaking out at this point and need to sleep]
  2. I am cold, wet and tired so this isn't as full an explanation as it should be but it should get you going until someone types something better: All the symptoms you report indicate that your internet connection can't handle SL. If you're using a wireless connection change to wired. You may also want/need to reboot your router. If all that fails then a clean install of the viewer may work, if it was ever working for you before.
  3. There are a whole set of land forums for parcel and sim sales. The one you want is http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Regions-for-Sale-Full-Regions/bd-p/RegionsforSaleFullRegions
  4. A cat box would be a box for a cat, and an entirely different thing to a box of cat-litter. In as much as our weather allows anyone to play in sand we would call such an area a 'sand-pit' but the name wouldn't particularly indicate play or, especially, making things. Just like yellow busses and taxis, heroic fire-fighters and post-boxes on poles they are references that just don't mean anything at all here. [Nealy all our busses are red, taxis black, fire-brigades on strike and letter boxes built into our houses]. Sorry, but in our prosaic way we just call somewhere people can practice a practice area and somewhere they can play a play area.
  5. Photons, by definition, move at the speed of light. Although gravity gets you down it's the bureaucracy and paperwork that takes them all that time to start the journey. Aircraft are much faster than sailing ships. One used to board one's ship by going to the docks and walking aboard. Now you have to go to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight check-in time (in the UK), which is itself about 30 minutes before expected departure. Bring passport, other ID, visas, etc. etc. I think you can see that the inevitable logic of this means the faster the form of travel the more officialdom will do to prevent you going anywhere ;-0
  6. For a while after LL gave up bothering to look after their own newbie areas, they got certain in-world groups to do the work for them for free (just like they use us to do their customer support). NCI, Caledon Oxbridge, The Shelter and others were, I think, offered as designated start locations.so no-one had to suffer the overrun LL areas. As with so many things though LL just found talking to customers, even ones doing their work for them, too much trouble. So they stopped, disolved the newbie-support structures and left the communities to get on as they had before and newbies to struggle as best they might. Ho hum.
  7. "Sandbox" just means a "box of sand" here in the UK. US Cultural references rarely travel well (like baseball)
  8. I don't want to change the platform at all. None of these require any development or testing. Unfortunately they need management :-( 1. LL providing customer support 2. LL taking action against griefers 3. LL taking action against IP theft 4. LL not committing IP theft 5. Torley (or SOMEONE) to talk to us every now and again!
  9. If you are "awesome at creating avatars" then the last thing you need in SL is a job - you can make thousands of L$ per day on your own.
  10. What is it that you actually want made? Shoes? Pretty easy. Mesh shoes? Fairly easy. Tap-dancing animations? Very hard. Explaining in more detail what you need may help.
  11. If your avatar is 'anime' then, presumably, you have a dirty great bit set of prims, or equivalent, covering/replacing your head. System hair, tattoos and anything else made for a standard human avatar therefore won't work or possibly even show at all. Which means that the only way practical wat you'll be able to get facial hair is by retexturing your head [only in SL!], unless the people who created the avatar offer an alternative.
  12. You will have noticed that across all the pages of your thread in the General Discussion forum no-one suggested you post here. That's because we're just residents like you and can't do any more than you can. Infohubs and 'welcome areas' have been notorious in SL for many years. LL don't seem to care so if you feel going to the same place and being constantly griefed then carry on ARing. Otherwise, as people in GD said - go somewhere else. Yes the griefers win.
  13. The technical reason for this is that the servers decide you wouldn't be able to see such small movements anyway so don't bother to send an update message to the viewer. I had the same problem with a smoothly-moving clock I made once - beyond a certain distance the hands would just appear to freeze because the updates weren't being communicated any more.
  14. A handy script to have around - that you can drop into the root prim of any linkset - is one which says the link-number and face that are clicked on. Using this you can check out your builds as they change. When complete it is easy to remove the script from the root prim. All you need is a touch_start() event and the functions http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlDetectedLinkNumber and http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlDetectedTouchFace
  15. /me drinks from the dishwasher - hey; I've just come back from the pub, it all tastes the same
  16. A fine example of why not to use mesh :-) That hat would be simple to make with prims in-world and some decent textures you can make in any graphics package (Photoshop or the free alternative GIMP are the most popular). Mesh - a 3d model - made outside SL can be great for reducing the Land Impact (LI) of an object but: It really only has an effect if there is lots of 3d detail that has to be reproduced You have to be good at reducing the 'poly(gon) count' that makes-up the model (which largely means using texturing instead) LI for attachments (worn objects) doesn't count against land so - to a certain extent - doesn't matter That hat is an ovoid with a couple of cut ovoids for the flaps, a sphere for the pompom and a few flexis for the tassles - simple (Alright, maybe another, sliced, cone for the 'brim' if you want it to stand proud) Total 10 prims or so.
  17. Note that Second Life (SL) is not a "game" where you carry out some predetermined actions to get some sort of "score". It's a virtual world where you do whatever you want to. As such a job is whatever someone else feels like paying you to do. Broadly, however, they fall into roughly four categories: Content creators: people with RL skills in creating computer content - anything from pictures, sound effects, animations, scripts (small programs that make SL things 'do something''), machinima (films), clothes, jewellery, etc., etc. Usually they make money by selling their stuff. Entertainers: DJs, musicians, singers, etc. stream their work into SL and work at clubs. They are supported by hosts, greeters, and others who 'run' the clubs. The sex industry: there's a lot of it about Roleplay: almost anything might be a 'job' in a roleplay group. There are schools that advertise for teachers, airports that want groundcrew, and almost anything else that people can dream up Also note that the pay for SL jobs is very, very low. In general a RL minimum-wage job will pay more. The good news is there isn't anything you have to pay for in SL, so money isn't needed much. There are good-quality items of all sorts available for free and you can make your own using all the tools without a fee.
  18. Yes? As pre-paid cards aren't supported, what is your question?
  19. The largest image you can import to SL is 1,024 x 1,024 pixels. The largest prim you can make (by normal means) is 64m cubed. That's a big picture! Unless you NEED a lot of detail it isn't the image size that counts - a 256 x 256 image is probably just as good and is a lot kinder to everyone that has to download and render it.
  20. Seriously - if your former landlord has absconded with your money then you do have a legal case. LL won't get involved in inter-resident disputes unless you make one; either by calling the police or your lawyer. In any of these situations you have to decide whether it is worth taking to RL courts or is just something you'll write-off to SL anarchy.
  21. "Other" "games". Well done, we now know exactly what you're looking for. Lots of people like IMVU - go there then! [You haven't read the comments in this thread - including other virtual worlds] ====> "asking linden lab's to fix..." YOU AREN'T: You're just making silly generalisations to other residents. We couldn't do anything about it even if your complaints made sense.
  22. Make sure you are using a very stable, wired internet connection. Wireless connections are the commonest cause of communication problems with SL, which is very demanding because of its environment, compared to online 'games'. Sim-crossings are a particular problem in SL, even at walking speed, as everything about an avatar or object, it's appearance, attachments, scripts, etc. has to be handed-off from one server to another. Therefore, also remove all unneccessary attachments and everything else (except system clothes) for the best experience. When I'm sailing - which is much slower - I use an 'outfit' that consists solely of a system wet-suit. Even my hair goes :-)
  23. If I take your house and give it to someone else - crediting your name - would that be ok? If I make loads of copies of the latest Hollywood blockbuster and give it away so people don't have to bother going to the cinema, do you think they'd mind - as long as I leave the credits on it? It's ALL about the terms of the licence you have to use material. For that you'll have to get permission from each creator and/or copyright holder of each item you wish to export and distribute.
  24. Lol - "play", "3d chat app", "doesn't support a pc" - you are a laugh. This might be more your speed: http://www.girlgames1.com/games/dress-up/
