  1. In a park. With lots of trees. And bridges. And cats. Good neighbors, too. It's nice there.
  2. A classic: Pandora Wrigglesworth's Curio Obscura store. It's not just four walls and vendors, or one of the cookie-cutter classy stores you see out there. It's a unique steampunk experience. Search Places for "Curio Obscura: For the Strange and Wonderful" and check it out. Also, if you need cheering up, Happy Mood (HPMD) is a lush and gorgeous outdoor sim with lots of greenery and trails and other things.
  3. Over the past ten years, I've tinkered with my backstory a bit. I'm a sentient clockwork automation, created by Dr. Milton Mariner's Mechanical Manservants and Farm Machinery for The Great Exhibition of 1851. My creator cut his hand on my chassis as he wound me up, and I mistook the first word I heard as my name. He and his family died in a house fire. I was blamed for their deaths, and I fled. Since then, I've gotten into a few scrapes and had a few upgrades. Parkes, Edison, Tesla, Marie Curie, Oppenheimer, Turing, Whitby, Shockley, Hopper... all have had a hand in my evolution.
  4. Hi there. I'm R. Crap Mariner. (The R stands for Robot, but I do not follow Asimov's Three Laws.) I'm a writer and storyteller, and I've been podcasting microfiction for over a decade. http://oneadayuntilthedayidie.com/ Also, I've gotten into snapping photos of dance troupes in Second Life. https://www.flickr.com/isfullofcrap/ - I've set the right SpaceNavigator button as a shutter to make things easier.
  5. Looking for a small whale or a moddable whale that can be made very small. Planning to add it to my build's orrery along with a bowl of petunias to honor Douglas Adams. Checked MP, wasn't happy with what I saw in the search results.

  7. I've been told that I'm pretty far out there.
  8. Hi there, I'm looking for generic animated machinery to include in a build. Simple animated gear textures is ok, but sculpty or mesh gearworks or other machinery would be even better. Suggestions?
  9. ... but I don't own a harp. (Checks Marketplace)
  10. I'll have what the gentleman on the floor is having. -ls/cm
  11. I guess if nobody else will mention the 800LI elephant in the room, I will... Regarding Sunday's major failures, Gridstatus posted the usual warning: "Please refrain from rezzing no copy objects, making inworld L$ transactions or marketplace transactions and remember to save all builds." Twelve years, and these still happen. *sigh* Anybody have stats on the frequency and severity of these semi-outages? Why not have the viewer automatically poll Gridstatus before a user rezzes a no copy object and makes an inworld L$ transaction? Or pop up the warning in the viewer itself? Because if someone is going full-dive, they're not going to be checking Twitter or the Gridstatus blog. And if they've already logged in, they're not going to see a warning that only appears on the login screen Follow-up questions: - What is being done to design Sansar's architecture to avoid single points of failure or chronic back-end service failures that could affect user inventories and/or game currency? - How aggressively will Sansar warn active users when there are currently severe performance and stability issues? - Will Sansar's SLA take into account these user-impacting less-than-total outages, or continue to use SL's current SLA?
  12. If I understand correctly, the Sansar code will be significantly more closed to third-party development and forks than SL. Have you used a third-party SL viewer? Have you seen the innovations and user interface features that these developers add which users want? Have you asked your official viewer developers how much they rely on third-party code? Do you realize how this might hinder Sansar?
  13. How much development is going into API functions for Sansar, and what will external systems be able to poll and control? Will the API functions use XML or JSON?
  14. Hi, Ebbe. It's me. (When you're done snickering at the name, let me know. I'll just sit here quietly... and... okay, you're ready. Good.) So, a lot of SL Media types hyped up a huge announcement on their blogs, twitters, plurks, forum posts. And... and... A half-finished, pay-per-hour streaming mobile client? Seriously? Okay, okay. This one's not your fault. I know this mobile client has been in the works for a long time, and you joined up for the final five yards of this marathon of a project. Plus, those SL Media types will hype pretty much anything they get an early exclusive on. Tell em it'll be April next month, and they'll go all April-crazy. Anyway, with all that side, you can get some good out of this announcement. How? Go back to those particular posts by these SL Media types. You know, the ones who did the meet-and-greet, and got a preview of this mobile client thing. Or, do a Google search for people who were asking "What do you think the announcement will be?" Then, look at all the things people thought it would be. Or feared it would be. Make a list. Put some tick-marks next to the ones that keep coming up. And laugh at the cynical and sarcastic "Get everybody's hopes up, and then dash them" jokes if you need to take a break. (Man, some of those folks are funny. Damien, Max, and Codie always crack me up.) So, are you done with the list? Good. Treat that list like you wrote it on a brick made from solid gold. Because that's what your customers actually care about and want. Show that list to your... product managers? Product owners? Whatever you call them, that's what folks want. if you think folks is too colloquial a term, then let's call them customers. Or, in Agile Scrum (or it is Scrum Agile?), you can call them stakeholders. And the list is your backlog of user stories. Figure out which one of those are what folks need, and then prioritize them. I look forward to seeing what the next announcement will be. Hopefully, it's something from this list. /me salutes
  15. You know, you should properly attribute that quote. Unless you're worried that you'll threaten yourself with some kind of forums violation for it.
  16. The 300-Meter Spike of Edlantis Almost seven years ago, a group of friends collected up their pocket change and bought a private region (Edloe). (I drew the short straw and ended up as the estate owner.) There were a few issues with the payment system and credit card validation. Folks sat around on the would-be neighboring sim (Nowhereville), waiting for the billing issues to get fixed and the region to appear. A little music, a little partying... it's SL, so any opportunity for a party, right? When the region finally arrived on the grid, we hit the place like gangbusters and got to setting up the parcels, terraforming, and building. However, after a while, something went kinda weird with the terraforming, and a huge 300 meter spike appeared in the land. Nothing we did could lower this thing. So, we downloaded the file, handed it to our local PhotoShop expert, and then smoothed out the spike. When we uploaded the file, all the land dropped to 0 meters. The sim went totally Waterworld. Instead of everyone freaking out and pointing fingers and getting angry, we laughed at the mistake and called in for a rollback. While we waited for the rollback, we rezzed boats and floating beachballs and other watercraft and had fun with it. Yes, there's stuff that's broken. But if it's not a showstopper, the show will go on. Just in a different direction, that's all. It's about having fun together, and opportunities when you see it.
  17. Error on the side of caution... post it to your own site and link it from here.
  18. t’s that time of year when we celebrate the anniversary of Second Life – and this year, the tenth anniversary of the founding of Second Life, will be very special. This year we will have 20 sims for builds and stages and fun and freebies, and we invite you to be part of the festivities. The theme of the event will be: Looking Forward, Looking Back. Some key dates for your calendar: April 15 Volunteer/Performer, Exhibitor Applications open May 20 Volunteer/Performer, Exhibitor Applications close May 27 Sims open to builders June 16 Grand Opening June 23 Official Birthday day June 23 Final day of performances June 29 Sims close to the public July 1 All builds to be dismantled – sims go offline Many of your classic favourites will be back. There will be a cake. There will be a main stage, and other stage venues. There will be gifts to take away – which may well include a (non-Linden) souvenir bear. There will be an auditorium for talks and presentations. And finally, there will be a time capsule into which you can put your past year’s best creations. How can I be part of this? You can volunteer to create your own celebratory plot, as Exhibitors are invited to show off their community and its special nature to others. You might prefer to join the team of Hosts welcoming all the visitors and handing out gifts, helping find locations, mentoring any newcomers who might need extra help and making the party happen. Maybe you’d rather join the rock concert atmosphere and be a Stage Manager or you are a DJ or Live Performer and would like to share your talent from one of our stages. Or perhaps you want to share your passion and knowledge as a Presenter through a lecture or roundtable discussion in our Auditorium. Others of you might be interested in Security or Public Relations. We’re looking for your energetic participation in all of these roles. You are invited to sign up for one or more of these areas (yes, you can volunteer for everything if you like). Orientation and Training will be provided for many of the roles. Expect that some time will be required prior to the event for that purpose. How can I stay informed? Read the SL10B blog – there will be regular updates and information posted there! You can also follow us through various social media: Our Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/groups/SL10B/ Our Twitter stream – https://twitter.com/SL10B Our Flickr Group – http://www.flickr.com/groups/2187760@N21/ We also have an information group inworld – “The SLB Community” (without the “”) – it’s free to join so sign up inworld to hear announcements there before you hear them anywhere else. You can see more information about SL10B on the Designing Worlds TV show at 2pm SLT on Monday 25th March – watch it at: http://treet.tv/shows/designingworlds/episodes/sl10b-launch or http://youtu.be/POfi8sOZzvg (it will go live at 2pm SLT).
